White House is referring to a woman in the UK named Mary Whitehouse... who tried to censure everything counter-culture in the UK/England... the pearl-clutching prude religious-right kind of person... that's why they say 'Mary you're really a treat' ... it's not about the US White House, but that's obviously a super-common misunderstanding.

The meaning behind Animals :- Concept. Loosely based on George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, the album's lyrics describe various classes in society as different kinds of animals: the predatory dogs, the despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning” herd of sheep.

Mary Whitehouse headed "The viewers and listeners association" they constantly complained about media that they felt was outside their own moral compass. FWIW for many years I worked near the building on the album art, it is Battersea Power Station, London, beside the Thames. Famously the pig balloon did escape, and ran into some barbed wire. The power station is now a swanky shopping mall retaining the exterior. Comically Whitehouse campaigned successfully to get Alice Cooper's "Schools Out" banned from the BBC, he subsequently sent her a bunch of flowers for helping it to reach number 1.

When leaders can’t lead they push blame and that’s what these two clowns are doing and the media is in full force behind them. Great reaction Aileen the lyrics are purely political by Roger. In Pink Floyd's song "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" from their album Animals, the pigs represent the wealthy and powerful people at the top of society who manipulate the rest of society to remain in power. The song's three verses each address a different pig, with the first verse directed at the pigs who supervise the work that feeds their gluttony. The second verse criticizes the conservative government, particularly Margaret Thatcher, a British politician who is often considered Ronald Reagan's counterpart. The song also suggests that the pigs encourage society to be competitive and cut-throat. Love what you are doing keep up the phenomenal job.

Not Thatcher. Too early. Roger was writing this in 1976. Thatcher did not become PM in the Uk until 1979 and it was in the 1980s that she developed the difficult reputation that could retrospectively be applied to this verse. When the album was released in the UK in 1977 no one associated Margaret Thatcher with this verse. I remember.

Aileen, at this moment you are my second favourite reactor on RUclips. Don't ask that question! You picked up on most of the lyrics and their meaning quickly. One thing you did not understand was "Hey you, Whitehouse". It does not mean that house in Washington DC. Here in Britain, some years ago there was a woman who was, to say the least, very prim and proper. She wanted to control everything we did and said and only expected everyone to live a strangely clean life, just like hers. I am now quoting the line from the song: "You try to keep our feelings off the street...". She expected everyone to conform to her own super clean image. Thankfully, she's gone now. Most people scorned her, but she just thought her way of thinking was the only one. A very sad person... her name was Mary Whitehouse.

Mary Whitehouse used to go on national t.v ,usually chat shows, and have a moan about films that showed nudity ,bad language and violence, she was the moral compass of the 70's ,early 80's for us brits. I remember when vhs recorders first came out and everyone used to go to get films out for the weekend, from an early version of blockbusters, most of the top films were hard to get, so there was an influx of B movies which usually had a lot of soft porn and graphic violence in them. Good for us being teenagers but not good for Mary Whitehouse 😂

The pig blimp should have been shot down by a marksman who turned up the first day it was due to fly, over the famous London landmark Battersea Power Station. Just a photoshoot for the album cover, not a stage prop.
      But the pig didn't fly.
On the second day it did fly, and they got the photos. But the marksman didn't come back.
The pig blimp broke free and drifted off with the winds.
It was spotted by airline pilots at 20,000ft who reported it and were suspected of seeing things/flying under the influence.
Eventually the pig came down over Kent, south east of London.
The pig was made in Germany, so some wit said when it broke free and left London eastwards, that it was a 'homing pig' 😂
Thus the legend of Pink Floyd and flying pigs was born.
From that tour that year and on, they had flying pigs (blimps) at their shows.

She wasn't a leader of anything except a TV 'watchdog' that she set up. She was a 'moral' campaigner always complaining about TV being too sexual. She was also a very conservative Christian who felt that standards in the 1970s were degrading, particularly on TV. She didn't seem to like anything.

Animals is a concept album that focuses on the sociopolitical conditions of mid-1970s Britain, the album's lyrics describe various classes in society as different kinds of animals: the predatory dogs, the despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning” herd of sheep. The album is inspired by a book "Animal Farm" a satirical allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England 1945.
It tells the story of a group of anthropomorphic farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon, the farm ends up in a state far worse than before.
Whereas the novella focuses on Stalinism, the album is a critique of capitalism and differs again in that the sheep eventually rise up to overpower the dogs.

Hi Aileen 😊 An absolute masterpiece of a reaction to Pink Floyd's Pigs 😊👍 I've read all the comments and everyone has filled you in beautifully 😊👍 You laid the foundation, put up the framework and they help you finish the job and the story is complete 😊👍 All the way back with Comfortably Numb, you quickly learned how to approach Pink Floyd and grown to love them as much as we do. People need to listen to your playlist in order to understand you. They need to understand that you take each Pink Floyd song very analytically, philosophically and thoughtfully. You emphasize to people that they need to listen and allow the music to overcome you. Then and only then are you able to experience what the band made the music to be. To be whisked away into the universe that they have created. A couple very beautiful comments have suggested that after you listen to Pigs, Dogs and Sheep to re-listen to the album in its entirety, as you have said to. There are a pair of small songs as bookends call Pigs on the Wing. Part one is at the beginning of the album and part two is at the end of the album, where each is 1 minute and 24 seconds long. The album is 41 minutes and 40 seconds long. That will be completely up to you to react. All of the recommendations in the comments are fabulous and I look forward to your reactions to them. I wanted to let you know David Gilmour has a new album out and is releasing videos off the album and is touring. I will drop the links in Patreon. Have a great day you and Arya with much love 😊👍💪❤️

"The lyrics do not describe law enforcement but politics; an allusion to the porcine characters in George Orwell's novel (Animal Farm 1945). The pigs in Orwell's story put on the façade of benign leaders whilst exploiting the fears of the other farm animals (the proletariat) to settle personal scores and further their own interests."

The wind got up and it broke the lines and it went flying off causing no end of problems for Heathrow Airport as it was floating around the flight path. It was finally shot down over Kent. You should listen to Dogs from the same album, which was performed three years earlier as ‘You got to be crazy’ on the Deluxe Experience version of Wish You Were Here.

In all the times I’ve listened to this I’ve never noticed how great Roger’s bass intro is. Right before it kicks into the more obviously funky section, he hits a note, sustains it, then slowly slides the pitch down to the end of the bar and hits another note, repeats. He’s underrated as a bassist; Pink Floyd are so well known for their spaciness but no one talks about the grooves they put down, like in Pigs.

This was the first Pink Floyd album I bought the day it was released in 1977. I was 15 at the time. I bought the LP to play at home and the 8-track to play in my car. Little did I know until I listened to the 8-track, it had an extended version of Pigs (Three Different Ones) due to the continuous play format of 8-track tapes. It had a guitar solo by Snowy White (he often toured with the band) on it. You can find that extended version on RUclips for those that are interested.

Dont forget the 2 parts of 'Pigs on the Wing' that start and finish this album. They have lyrics worth a listen too, and its short and sweet. In the 80s i recorded both parts back to back on tape to jam along with on guitar. Its cool to sing both parts as one song.
Still meaning to learn the entire guitar parts for 'Dogs', but its a big project. Currently im working on 'Coming back to life' of the Division Bell album. Been 2 weeks and i have tge 1st solo down ok-ish, but 2 fast runs still trip me up. The Chords are beginner easy. Next week i start on the 2nd solo. Tgen the 3rd maybe around xmas. Such a musical masterpiece. 'Dogs' and 'The Blue' maybe in the next 2 years.
