Captains Log hooked me in so bad.
Back in the day I watched Star Trek through to the end of TNG and loved it. Then my interests went elsewhere. I love solo RPG’s so I bought Captains Log out of curiosity. I’m now hopelessly lost in a sea Star Trek stuff. I bought all the movies, I’ve watched Picard seasons 1&2. I’ve now hopped onto Voyager for season 1. I’ve bought a bunch of source books to flesh out my Captains Log stories plus the core rules to allow me to tweak the game if I want to. I can’t get enough. So yeah, Captains Log is a great gateway!
    Good video. Cheers!

That is such a great story! It's been so amazing to see Captain's Log widen the fanbase and players of STA. All of the social groups online have seen an influx of new members and the community is healthier than ever. It really is a wonderful gateway to bring people in to roleplaying, Star Trek Adventures and the entire Star Trek franchise itself. I never expected such a response.
Thanks for the comment and hope to see you around!

All thanks go to you and all your hard work, Michael. Captain's Log has captivated the hearts of more people than I would have ever imagined. You must be so proud to be the lead of such a keystone piece to the STA lineup. Well done, sir!

One issue for me is when i go to create a character and choose TNG it gives you Delta Quadrant races???
This never fits in my story so I usually choose TOS characters.

Are you talking about using the online character creator by B.C. Holmes? You can always go back to the previous page and click the random button again if it's giving you a species you don't want to use.
But if you're using the book and the TOS species listed in the table are the majority of what you'd want to get randomly, then there's nothing wrong with using that to roll up your character. Or you could just reroll if you get a species that doesn't fit your game in the TNG list. But, of course, you don't have to roll everything randomly; you're free to choose any species, ship, etc. that you want to have. The tables are there to just help keep things unexpected, but you can use them to whatever degree that works best for you.
Remember, the rules in Captain's Log are always flexible for you to craft the story that you want to tell. Don't feel that you are shackled to any result given to you.

@@thefinalfrontiersmen Yes! Thanks to your advice, I have realized I can always reroll or make up my own species! but sometimes my brain wants an easy way out 'to roll' .. I've also used 'random' on BC Holmes and I got Kazon, the book pg 94 I got Ocampa & Talaxian. I just knew these were from Voyager (not that I'm an expert on 'ST species' but i knew these) And I got 'Changeling which really wouldn't work at that moment'. But I like the randomness of rolling and it feels more like a game and more fun. But if I use the TOS tables I'm likely to get a character in my time period and quadrant.
Also I wish they had 'Federation Species' separate from Non Federation..for rolling NPCs. I'm so knew to this.
If you've read this far (haha), I hear about this book .. is it for playing Solo in general for any RPGs. I'm assuming it's filled with matrixes or something ? It's awkward being a beginner sometimes 🙃Can you play STA solo? I'm trying to learn RPGs to one day play with others and thinking after getting comfortable with Captain's Log maybe trying STA but i live rural and have no one that would want to play TTRPG.
So if i learn enough eventually to be GM perhaps I can star my own STA TTRPG!

@@librarian1701-D lol If all your rolls are coming up Delta Quadrant or Gamma Quadrant species, maybe that's the universe telling you to dive into those regions of space. ;)
Captain's Log is the solo version of STA so if you want to play alone, that's the book for you. (Though it's still possible to use Captain's Log to play group games as well). The core Star Trek Adventures books are designed for traditional play of a GM and players, not solo. STA and CL are very different beasts, though they share some similarities. Captain's Log is described more as a "journaling game" as you're basically writing an episode as it plays out. So if you want to eventually run a full Star Trek RPG session, you'll probably want to look into the main STA books. It might be easier for you since you say you don't have a lot of TTRPG experience.
And if you do go down that road, Star Trek Adventures 2nd Edition is slated to be released later this year. If you can wait a bit, you can jump in with the new book that is going to have more streamlined rules, a better organized book, and include a lot of the options that have grown over the past 8 years of the game all inside one tome. But, I do want to add the disclaimer: 2nd Edition will NOT make the current 1st edition books obsolete; they will go hand in hand. So anything you have already will still be easily used with 2nd edition.
Thanks again for your comments and for watching the videos. I appreciate it a lot.

How do these rules compare to the old FASA game? Is it possible to overlap the two in a solo campaign?

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen  7 месяцев назад +1

Thanks for the message. Unfortunately I’ve never played FASA so I can’t compare the two. I’m not sure how FASA works as a solo game but Captain’s Log is somewhat more of a journaling game where you allow the rolls on the random tables (matrixes) to inspire the storytelling for your adventure. I don’t imagine it would be hard to use these matrixes alongside any other RPG system as they are separate from the mechanics of the game.
