    Resources for Captain's Log: try looking for deck plans for your starship. Look for unusual areas and consider what kinds of stories you can tell there. A security patrol finding a couple ensigns necking in an underutilized area could lead to questions about good order and discipline, which could be the prelude to a viral outbreak, or alien influence, or the start of a murder mystery when one is later found dead!

    My "captain" is a lieutenant commander, the skipper of a runabout (using the stats for an Archer-class, because in the lore that ship is an early runabout) operating from a Ross-class command carrier. That way I can keep the crew small, but still have access to major facilities.

    The last time my group played STA, we encountered a large cat like beast that the storyteller wrote as something like a Red XIII sentient beast but our party phasered first and asked questions later. Thus we had to deal with the horrors of man, which I know isnt what you were trying to present here, but man did it feel like something out of a Roddenberry thinly veiled social commentary episode to illustrate that humans are the true horror lol.

      That sounds like a thrilling time! I do like stories that deal with "horrors of man" but those are far more unsettling than the supernatural fun of a Halloween-focused scary story. Humans really are the true horror and showing that we could overcome that one day is one of the most enduring strengths of Star Trek.

    08:10 The compound you're referring to is Trellium-D, which the crew of the Vulcan cruiser _Seleya_ (and undoubtedly, that of the vessel _Vaankara_ after them) attempted using to protect their vessel from the various anomalies endemic to the Delphic Expanse: neural pathway degradation, caused by prolonged exposure to the compound, led to the Vulcans' otherwise ironclad emotional control gradually eroding over time, resulting in them becoming homicidal and violently insane. 12:40 Another good body horror (or, as it's sometimes called, 'visceral horror') example would be the *_Voyager_* episode "Threshold", in which Lt. (j.g.) Tom Paris, soon after making a Warp 10 filght in a modified shuttlecraft, undergoes millions of years of evolution in the span of a few hours, eventually mutating into a salamander-esque creature (in the midst thereof abducting Cpt. Janeway, having her undergo the same process, and find a remote planet where they eventually mate and have offspring). 17:00 In "Meld", Tuvok mind-melded with Lon Suder, not to control his violent impulses, but to understand why anyone would kill at all as he was clearly skeptical of Suder's response as to why he would kill crewman Darvin ("I didn't like the way he looked at me."); over the course of the episode, Tuvok becomed briefly addicted to Suder's lack of emotional restraint, culminating in those same violent impulses overwhelming him as he attempts to execute Suder via mind-meld. 22:00 The *_Lower Decks_* episode that introduces us to the Moopsy is titled "I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee" (a play on Harlan Ellison's Hugo-winning short story 'I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream') 30:00 Another good 'cosmic horror' monster might be the Crystalline Entity first introduced to us in the *_TNG_* episode "Datalore" (which also introduces us to Data's mentally unstable "brother" Lore). 32:10 The *_Voyager_* episode in question here is "Scientific Method" and the aliens are known as the Srivani; it is revealed in said episode that their experiments, which employ submolecular genetic tags, are conducted for biomedical research used exclusively to their own people's benefit, and they conduct themselves (and, by extension, their experiments) with an air of casual, superior arrogance on par with that of both the Cardassians and the Dominion, viewing their "test subjects" suffering minimal fatalities and/or deformities as being acceptable. 33:50 Another good psychological horror example would be the *_Voyager_* episode "Repression", in which Tuvok, during his time undercover as a member of Chakotay's Maquis cell, is turned into a 'sleeper agent' of sorts by Teero Anaydis, a fanatical Bajoran vedek who the Maquis refused to work with because of his unethical methods, which included mind control as a form of recruitment: when his programming is activated via a subliminal message keyed to Vulcan synaptic frequencies, he systematically attacks the Maquis crewmembers aboard _Voyager_ (including Lt. (j.g.) B'Elanna Torres and the aforementioned Cmdr. Chakotay) and passes the programming on to them, leading to a brief Maquis takeover of the ship.

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen Месяц назад

      @@starshiptempest I completely get that. It took me a very long time to feel like I had a complete grasp on the 1e rules due to the infrequency of playing and not exploring some aspects of the game (my group defuses every situation before combat happens). Those early episodes of ours are just a smattering of half remembered rules and temporary stand-ins until I can learn the actual mechanics. Now that I'm finally comfortable with 1e, I have to admit it's hard to transition over to 2e and start the process all over again. Not because of complexity but because I know my brain will automatically throw out the 1e version when a new mechanic pops up. But I loved what I saw in the streamlining of 2e so I am very eager to try them out RAW. So no matter the personal challenge, I'm going to switch over starting with our next episode sometime next month (I hope).

      @@thefinalfrontiersmen hey, as a fellow GM for STA, I have a 2e question for your opinion. Under the rules (p292), one can treat a Defeated character with First Aid to remove the Defeated status (though they are still Injured and need their injuries treated separately) OR ONE can treat the injury with Difficulty equal to that of the causative Severity for the attack that caused this injury. So, my question is, if you treated the Injury, what do you do about the Defeated status as it is inferred that they are managed as separate items/issues.

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen Месяц назад

      @@TheChillee Sorry my reply is so late. I have been exceptionally busy lately and can barely devote time to my online endeavors! As to your question, I was involved in a similar conversation just recently so I remembered I hadn't answered your comment yet so I hope this is still useful. Since "Defeated" and "Injuries" are handled differently, you would have to treat both to remove both of the statuses just as you inferred. So if you were only to treat the injury of the Defeated character, they would still remain with the Defeated status (unconscious). BUT -- and here's where the recent conversation comes into play -- a character Defeated by a Stun attack automatically recovers at the end of that scene (or thereabouts) because the Stun is only a temporary thing. This isn't explicitly pointed out in the 2e rulebook but it was very clearly stated in 1e. Plus it thematically makes sense based on the Star Trek universe that Stuns are only temporary. It's implied in the rules with the line, "cannot take actions for the rest of the scene" which suggests that they *can* take actions after the scene. Hence, the Defeated status goes away but, of course, any other injuries would still remain until treated. And if the injury was Deadly, then they would definitely need that First Aid by the end of the scene or the character dies. So in both cases, the Defeated status would only last for the duration of the scene. It's unfortunate that the 2e book did not make this as clear as 1e but it should be seen as "Rule As Intended" instead of "Rule As Written". Since STA is a narrative system, there's nothing stopping you from combining the effects of treating the injury AND removing the Defeated status with a single roll through various means built into the game or even house ruling. But mechanically, they are treated as two separate things. I hope that helped clear things up and I hope I didn't lose sight of what the question was through this long, rambling reply. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    @The Final Frontiersmen I just finished my initial read of the core rulebook and I'm still trying to conceptualize in my head how combat works. Any thoughts you have on that? I have a couple of ways I think it may work. It is also confusing to me, since the GM doesn't roll dice. It seems like it could all come to a roll or two on the player's behalf and then it is just described out by the player, I assume. It would be cool if you could use Clocks to represent enemies and you have to tick them down to win a combat, like in Blades in the Dark.

    Is this the complete game in one book, or is this effectively a player's guide with a GM book to follow? I have Captain's Log but I am thinking about getting this to add a bit more crunch to the game. What I find odd, though, is that it doesn't seem like there would be much challenge in terms of dice rolls. If you have a target number of 10, for example, rolling 2d20s means you have a roughly 75% chance of success. If your target is 14, you have a 91% chance. I know that the intent is to have Starfleet characters who are highly competent, but it seems like there is not much chance of failure ion many cases. (I am writing this near the start of the video, so if you answer these questions in the review I will find them eventually, but I can't watch the whole thing right now.)

      Thanks for the comment! The 2e core rulebook is everything you need to play, rules wise. All other books only supplement the content but this is the full game in one book. As far as the ease of passing, it’s true that it’s not nearly as hard to succeed as in most other games and it’s for the exact reason why you’ve guessed: Starfleet officers are competent across the board. However the challenge comes not so much from the tasks but overcoming the complications and twists that arise. The use of threat to throw unexpected dilemmas in the path causes a lot of fun brainstorming sessions on how to get by. Higher difficulty tasks will almost certainly require purchasing extra dice to succeed but it also increases the chance of complications arising. Yes, they have no problem using the deflector to close the subspace rift that will destroy the station but the feedback loop will destroy the ship. So now they must devise a way to overcome this obstacle, put it into place and then close the rift before it’s too late. The challenge comes from the situation with the potential risk of the die roll only making things more thrilling. It works splendidly and makes the game truly feel like Star Trek while still being challenging.

    Love the positivity of your videos. I’ve preordered the 2e rulebook and am so excited to GM this. I’m a relatively new GM so have only ever run prewritten stories, but the idea of being able to write and tell my own Star Trek stories sounds like so much fun (but maybe a little nerve wracking!)

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment! Writing Star Trek stories is a blast! And yes in the beginning it can definitely seem nerve wracking. But when you start to think of all the corners you can explore that the various TV series missed, and do it in your own way, it becomes such an exciting endeavor! Eventually the only problem you’ll have is there being not enough time to tell all of the stories you want to tell! Just have fun with it and take the good with the bad. If you haven’t already, I recommend reading the Gamemaster’s Guide for advice on running the game as well as reading the sections in various books (such as the Lower Decks sourcebook) about the ways to make your games feel like Star Trek. But the only other piece of advice I can share is that the enjoyment of the players (yourself included) is far more important than the story. So if everyone is having fun, the episode is going well no matter how far off the rails things may have gone. Good luck and have some great adventures!

    do you see a captains log 2e in sensor range? As a mainly solo player should i get 2e only or stick with captains log?

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen 2 месяца назад

      Michael and Jim have said a couple of times that there is no 2e coming for Captain’s Log as it is its own thing. If you’re mainly a solo player, sticking with CL will be the best bet since 2e is designed for groups like 1e. Of course there will be lots of things you could adapt or port over into CL (and vise versa) to fit your solo play style but the 2e core rules won’t natively support it. But just like in 1e, future sourcebooks can always be mined first content to apply to CL games.

    Thanks for this review and all of your content. I'm getting ready run a 2e campaign and while never having played 1e, I own all of the 1e content. What would you consider would you consider to be the easiest books to carry over to 2e to use?

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen 2 месяца назад

      I’d say that all the books are equally easy to carry over as the adjustments required are the same. Perhaps the only one with more complexity would be the Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign simple because it uses an entirely original mechanic for ships power. But you’d have to calculate the initial power based on 1e to use it. So it requires one additional step than other mechanics. Even so, that’s not much of a challenge to do and it’s only one part of the whole book. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

    Thanks for covering 2e, Bill. I'm a lifelong Trekker and gamer, but I really struggle with STA 1e. I found it greatly over written, unintuative, and difficult to engage with. I'm still underdecided whether I will invest in 2e.

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen 3 месяца назад

      I get that. The core mechanics of 1e were simple enough to understand but there were a few specific parts that I had to read three or four times before it made any sense to me. On top of that, the first edition book is now quite infamous with how much more difficult it made the process of learning the game. I think once most people got past the hurdle that the book's layout threw in our paths, the system was easy to run. But there are a fair number of people who never got over that hurdle and the simplicity of the game's design remains out of their reach. I will say that I think the 2e book is organized and explained far better than what we got in 1e, even with the much easier Klingon and Digest rule books. The flow charts for all of the major mechanics, as well as how to tell a story as a GM, are great references for running the game that remove the need for reading and rereading sections to remind yourself on the rules. Plus it trims a lot of the extra bits that made 1e a little clunky. So it might be worth it to give the 2e book a read if you can get your hands on it. Since the majority of the rules are unchanged from 1e, even a quick readthrough might clear up any of the sticking points from the first book and help you see the beauty of the system hidden underneath. But if you have a different Star Trek RPG system that works for you (FASA, LUG, Decipher, etc.), then there's no reason to force yourself into a system that you don't mesh with. You could always adapt the new stuff into the game that you prefer. In any case, I hope you are able to keep gaming with Trek in one form or another and I'd love to hear more about your experiences! Thanks for watching!

      You're absolutely right that this book (and the upcoming GM tool kit) will be a spectacular start for new players coming into STA. But I think the more important point you should imply from my summary is that if you're happy with 1st edition you absolutely don't need to get the 2e book. Since you're not a new player and, I assume, you're satisfied with the original rules, another core rulebook would be unnecessary. It will not be difficult at all to reverse engineer the character and starship differences from 2e back to 1e, so any new 2e products that come out will still be just as useful as the 1e sourcebooks have been. However, if you do want to switch over to the 2e rules set eventually but are put off by the cost of the physical books, the PDFs would be a far more affordable option. Particularly because you would likely only be interested in the changes to the system. The core book PDF is not available yet but it will be a cheaper option once it's out. Plus the PDFs frequently go on sale and Modiphius has had some wonderful PDF bundles on Humble Bundle over the years, so you might even get a large chunk of 2e books at an extreme discount if you can wait. In the end, whichever path you take is going to be the right one because either set of rules will work fine. As long as you're having fun, don't stress yourself out about not having the newest version immediately! Thanks for commenting!

    Outstanding summary and review. I still have my doubts about being without Challenge dice… but that’s do-able. In personal combat, how would a GM handle disintegration here? In 1e, it was easier… 2 injuries from a single attack qualified for me as GM… it seems less defined (even if a Trait was applied ? Suggestions?

    • @thefinalfrontiersmen
      @thefinalfrontiersmen 3 месяца назад

      Great question! I think it actually is less defined in 2e because it puts a larger emphasis on Traits and the narrative. For NPCs it's pretty straight forward. In general, Minor NPCs can't avoid injury so all it takes is a single hit and they're out, disintegrated if that would be the effect. Notable NPCs can avoid injury once per scene, provided they can pay the severity cost. Major NPCs can avoid as many injuries as they can afford to pay in Threat. But once either of them can't or chooses not to avoid injury, all it would take is a single hit and the narration that it disintegrates them. For PCs it definitely felt more ambiguous, likely to allow the heroes a chance to live another day. There doesn't seem to be any mechanical rule for death in addition to not receiving medical treatment by the end of a scene where they are Dying. But this would probably be where the Traits and narrative come into play. If you wanted to make the disruptor extra deadly you could create a "Set to Full Disintegration" trait on the weapon, stating that any hit would fully disintegrate the target. Or maybe make it cost 3 Threat instead of 1 for a normal Deadly attack (similar to a Photon Torpedo spread vs a single torpedo). So if the PC can't avoid the injury, you could bypass the whole "Dying" status and rule in the narrative that they are atomized by the hit. That way the attack causing the death would be an intentional consequence instead of the possibility of being killed in 1st edition due to a very unfortunate roll of Challenge Dice. Those are just my thoughts and that's just how I would go about it. However, I think the fundamental aim is to allow the heroes a chance to survive while still providing GMs with the tools and framework to build their own paths around it.
