    Some photos and outdated sketchup file can be found at dropbox link below. It’s outdated sketchup because the split-top was a last minute change and some of the dimensions might be different.

    Mounting the top issues:
    Mounting the top with just dowels is the way Will Myers has his moravian workbench. For some reason, this did not work for me. I was having issues with the holdfasts where they would actually lift the top slightly when engaging the holdfast. I tried this dowel method twice by plugging the holes and trying again. It still didnt work so then I tried dominos as they are beefier than the dowels but the holdfast still kept lifting the top. I then resorted to using some ductile threaded plates and machine bolts to mount the top and now all works well. In the end, I’m actually happy with the metal fasteners since they allow me to easily lift one end of the bench to slide it away from the wall when more space is needed.

    That bench is just stunning. The Moravian design is beautiful in itself, but your wood choices, with the contrasting colors, makes yours exceptionally beautiful. Nice job. I hope you do more woodworking videos. If the rest of your work is as nice as your bench, it will be a great channel to watch.

    I built a bench when I started 4+ years ago with a douglas fir top. I've flipped the top once and fiddled with vices & bench stops. This looks like exactly what I want: replaceable top,angled leg vice, blacksmith bench stop. And narrower than my current bench. Thanks for sharing it so I could see it!

      @zer013  2 года назад

      Thank you! I’m very happy with the bench. I would make it 24” wide if i would do it again. The 21” width now is fine but I think the extra 3” width would have been a better decision.

    • @TomBuskey
      @TomBuskey 2 года назад

      @@zer013 Mine is close to 24" now. I have a board down the middle. It's pushed against the wall. The back part is covered w/ tools, etc and I just work on the front. I recently made a dutch tool chest and have that on the back part. So for me, my next will be narrower (16-18" ?) and maybe with a tool tray or hang the DTC on the wall w/ an easier reach.

    I especially love the leg vice because it opens up so much space for the bottom shelf. I tried to angle the vice on my moravian bench, but couldn't make it work (I was using a vice screw and a guide bar with pin holes, didn't have a pin-less chain vice like yours). I guess will give the vice another go.

    Thank you for sharing your twist on this. I made the Will Myers version and love it, including the tray. I admit I haven't tried living without the tray. I have been looking at the underside and thinking of what you did but would likely add a bank of drawers or two. The downside is it makes the portability of the design not possible. Of course I have yet to move it from my shop, so it is me stressing about nothing. Love the bench!

    • @zer013
      @zer013  Год назад

      Thank you for watching and commenting. There are some options for drawers to keep with portability aspect. I really love this one. I would do it differently myself and just have some low profile drawers so you can still utilize a shelf and have room for holdfasts. But the cleat design to just rest on the stretchers is genius.
      lakeerietoolworks.wordpress.com/2018/07/02/enjoy-this-moravian-workbench-rocky-mountain-beauty-july-2018/
      And then there is the other option that I went with. There is a lot of space underneath the stretchers so I just made some drawers to slide underneath.

    Moravian is not German😐I am from Moravia which is placed between Czechia and Slovakia. Moravia has proud and long history. Great Moravia was the first state (founded around 830AD) in Central Europe spanning Czechia, Slovakia, todays Hungary, parts of Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Austria, Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia. Now Moravia is part of Czech republic, but that's another story.
    How Moravians came to Germany:
    In 1722 Moravians, members of the very first organised protestant church in the world, Unitas Fratrum (Unity of Bretherns), fled religious persecution and settled in Saxony (Germany), where they founded Herrnhut.
    Unitas Fratrum was founded in 1457AD, before Lutherans, Kalvinists, Anglian church etc.
    From Herrnhut Moravians went as missionaries into many countries including America. Moravians were known in Germany for handicraft production and that was how they supported themselves in America as well. Hence Moravian workbench in todays US.
    And yes, we do have Moravian benches in Moravia 😉.
    And I just built one of them here in UK. Few hundred years from now and Englishmen will claim, that Moravians are Brits, because of my bench 😆😆

    Very nice build! The moravian (hey this is German as I am 😃) and the Nickolson were both on my short list last year. I decided for the latter in the knockdown version after reading Chris Schwarz book. I'm really happy with it, but since building a bench is so much fun I might build a Moravian soon, too 😂
    The only problem is that all of the hardware parts you showed including the wooden screw are very hard to get in Germany...

      @zer013  3 года назад +1

      I was leaning towards a nicholson workbench myself after reading Chris Schwarz’s blue workbench book. I stumbled upon Will Myers video of the moravian workbench and was immediately drawn to the angled legs and tusk tenons. You can use any vise hardware that’s available to you on your moravian. Thanks for watching!

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 3 года назад

      I saw a RUclipsr make a wooden screw. You need a plastic container to encase wood and oil (cant remember the type). The wood spends days in it absorbing the oil making the wood soft and carvable without breaking appart. The other equipment is something you can turn all the way down the wood that carves the plane. I think it was in a King workshops video. A lot of work but it is possible.

    • @doedeldidoedelda
      @doedeldidoedelda 3 года назад

      @@gm2407 I did something similar when building a Moxon vice screw recently (see fotos here: www.dictum-handwerksgalerie.de/mit-moxxon-haelt-es-besser/).
      This is a 1 1/2" version made of maple stock. It works reasonably well and was not too hard to get right (with a set of cutters from Dictum for about 60€). The problem is the threads slope, around 6.5 tpi, which is too fine for a workbench really. The Lake Erie sets are much coarser and better quality I think.

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 3 года назад +1

      @@doedeldidoedelda Well at least the option is there if the equipment is sourceable. But I would certainly think making the screw would be the hardest part of the job due to risk of damage to the whole piece of wood or the risk of finding a knot whilst carving.

    OutSTANDING! I love the hybridization of the Moravian with the Roubo, and you NAILED the balance, there!
    That is to say: you did a superb job of keeping the strengths of each while ditching some of their... call it "less-amazing elements."
    The problem with the Roubo is it relies both on too many hard 90's and the (somewhat fiddly, in some cases) precision joinery of big, heavy, expensive blocks of timber, meaning you're doubly screwed if you cut something a bit too wide.
    My beef if the Moravian really boils down to its relative lack of mass and (personal preference, here, albeit) the fact I hate sawdust tra- err, "tool trays".
    Admittedly, I can take or leave leg vices, though I absolutely acknowledge the structural significance in this case, and, let's face it: that was a sexy-ass implementation you didn't there. It sure as hell ain't gonna HURT nothing, and again... that's a HOT example of it!
    Well done, man!

    Definitely one of the nicest Moravian benches I’ve seen on the Internet. Stunning!
    What dimensions did you use for the legs (looks like 3 1/2 x 5...?) and long stretchers?

      @zer013  3 года назад +1

      thanks! yeah, i increased the size of the legs since i was going with the larger diameter of the wooden screw versus a metal one. the legs are 3 3/8” x 5”. i don’t recall the long stretchers offhand but those were made to the same specs as will’s plans. i think like 2 7/8” x 3 1/2”

    What's the point of building Moravian if you need big screws to assemble it?

    This is my favorite workbench on RUclips for all the same reasons others have listed in the comments. I live in a condo and want a workbench just like this, only smaller.
    I'm new to woodworking and don't have knowledge of wood variety. I do know that pine is considered soft and lightweight, but easily scratches/dents. What was your rationale for choosing pine? Also, if I were to forego soft wood, what combination of hard woods would you recommend?
    Lastly, is there anything you would add/delete after working with the bench over time?

      Thank you for the generous compliment. First thing I would recommend is to head over to Lost Art Press’s website and download “The Anarchist’s Workbench”. It’s free to download. See Chapter 3 “For the Love of Yellow Wood”. My workbench is heavily influenced by Christopher Schwarz even though it’s not his design. I followed his instructions on the use of construction lumber.
      Things I would change:
      - Increase width to 24” wide
      - Increase the length to 7’
      - Eliminate the deadman so my dog holes could be closer to the edge
      - Use a solid piece of wood for the “gap stop” (I don’t like the tool holes in actual use)

      I wrote a thread about my workbench on Rex Krueger’s forum. You can check that out if you want.

    Hey Chris, I hope you see this. Question: what is the purpose of the slots in the center board between your two halves of the top?

    • @zer013
      @zer013  Год назад +1

      It’s supposed to be a place to hold tools. Some people love it, but I hate it. It doesn’t do a good job at holding narrow tools like chisels vertically and it’s just more places for chips and shavings to fall on tbe shelf. It’s one of the things I would change if I built it again - it would just be a solid center piece.

      Thank you. I wouldn’t say it’s my own design. I just mixed some existing designs popularized by Will Myers, Chris Schwarz, and Benchcrafted. They’re the ones who get the credit.

    where you guys come with that name , I'M from Moravia, doing cabinetry since 80' got my grandfather tools, and i never see such contraption there ? It looks cool, craftsmanship is spectacular don't make me wrong we just don't do those slanted legs, wierd vise on side or that wagon vise and split top benches here

      The name comes from a Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th century. There is a workbench from that era currently stored in a museum in Old Salem, NC. That workbench was copied by Will Myers and mine is loosely based on the copied version.

    I really like some of your changes to the original design. You said, "I was having issues with the holdfasts where they would actually lift the top slightly when engaging the holdfast." Was that because the holdfast was in a hole in one of your half-tops while attempting to apply clamping pressure on the other?

    This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!
