I am 72 now and Bob Dylan has been a companion for a lifetime and this is one of my favorite songs. It is a great gift that you make it possible to listen to this early version, it makes it a little bit easier to come through these heavy times. Greetings from Germany: May you stay forever if not young so at least healthy!
Years ago my son was in a rock group. They were looking for a name. I suggested "The Ghost of 'Lectricity." They all looked at me like I was nuts. I still think it would be a great rock group name.
I have loved Dylan for the first time I heard Like a Rolling Stone on the radio when I was in the 4th grade. Visions is the pinnacle of that obsession and it has never ceased. I dream about this song.
He had me at “ain’t it just like the night to play tricks when you’re tryin to be so quiet “ ? And the harmonica playing ..wow. I’m going through an early Dylan obsession. This is the encore !
What I love is that, unlike many artists and bands whose music will not stand the test of time (no shame in that), I fully hope and expect that 50, 100, even 200 years from now new generations will be discovering and enjoying Dylan’s genius (up there with Mozart, et al., if I may be so bold; I think the same likely will be true of The Beatles). I started getting into Dylan, and finally really listening to his immense catalogue, later in life than many (late 30s, early 40s). But I then made sure to expose my kids to Dylan, and-like the Beatles and much jazz-they took it and ran with it on their own, and now almost certainly know even more than me. And I’m sure they will pass it on to their children, and so on and so forth. (Thank God we were able to see him in concert for our first, and likely only, time this year, at age 80. Now that’s something that future generations won’t be able to experience.) So grandparents, play Dylan for your grandkids and talk about his lyrics and songs. Parents, do the same for your kids and nephews/nieces. Older brothers and sisters, pass it on to your siblings and cousins and friends. Keep the love and knowledge going for future generations. And a special thanks for the people keeping this amazing content on RUclips for everyone to enjoy and share together
Abby Wilson yeah these days noone laughs at any point of the song! how things change i don‘t know it‘s the same song after all, but it meant something else then!?
@@mario7frankielee It's because the song was brand new. The first time we hear something interesting, strange, arresting, or profound we laugh. It's a natural response.
When I was 14, this and the Beatles "happiness is a warm gun" informed me of another world. I started reading books. Opened my provincial mind like no other. Wonderful x
This song grabbed my heart the first time I heard it and never let go. When our daughter was born there was no hesitation as my wife and I looked at her, then each other, and no questions needed to be asked or answered. She was holding Johanna Marie.
I'v got the Ginsberg downloads but it is nice to have this individual Visions to enjoy all by itself ...enjoying the sound and the humour and laughs that must have pleased Bob that people were listening and appreciating his thoughts.
Great post , Swingin' . I think your amazin' channel had a debt with this first ''freeze out'' live performance because u have uploadin' a lot of recordings from this wonderful decade and specially another outtakes and live versions of Visions of Johanna (i love one that you overdubbed the vocals with live footage ) . Dylan say on Murder Most Foul ''Play something for the Birdman of Alcatraz'' (a 1962 Burt Lancaster film) the real prisioner who talked only with nightindales ...
Freeze out is good name as any, Alcatraz to the 9th power well glad his choice was a simple name for a complex song weaving simply in concept.🎷☕ Gee so young yet look how far he changed with the times but kept his golden heart. Wow your description gives some hope around all this sickness. Ta for your time and care can't wait for the history lesson. :)
Thank you Swingin Pig! It's always a highlight to hear from you😊! I love this song and i'm often thinking about the meaning of all these lines. Thanks for the description, because I didn't understand what Bob is saying. Stay safe and healthy!🐷🍀
I came to SF in 1969, after Woodstock, just turned 17, bought my first Dylan boot in Berkeley, the next day at Bizzarro Music it was titled the Albert Hall concert, but perhpas it was Manchester in May of 1966. Ginsberg was a regular at the Caffe Trieste, saw him there often, alog with Lauerence Ferlinghetti and Paul Kantner from the Airplane, who became a good friend and neighbor until he died. This is fantastic, not sure I ever heard it but seem to remember 'the nightingale's code', was it used in another song?
I'm glad this is out but i noticed that another concert that he played on this channel was copyright striked and no longer exists. Very sad about that since I was learning that version
Ever since you first uploaded the full concert, I still think the audience response to the Mona Lisa/Moustache verse is the most endearing audience reaction ever. In most of the 1966 live performances, no one can be heard laughing anymore once it became a popular album track. Same deal in Desolation Row with the hands in pants line. It got a big laugh in every early live version. I just love listening to people’s reactions of hearing these lines for the first time.
Yes, there were some funny images, but by the evocative final line, "And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain," it had become clear that "Everything stays down where it's wounded."
None of the audiences in any the 1966 shows would have heard Visions before their respective concerts. Blonde On Blonde wasn't released until August 1966, and all the shows were only up through May 1966.
If the audience found something funny they laughed. If they appreciated a particular line they politely applauded. The days before that obnoxious high pitched "WOOOO" sound wasn't yelled after every f****** line!

Thank you so much for uploading these, this is a treasure! Can someone tell me what Dylan is saying before the song? (I can’t hear and English is not my first language)
No. The electric set of the San Jose concert was. As I understand it, this tape was only shortly before the release of the cutting edge, so there wasn't enough time to put it all on there, I'm assuming. I've learned that Sony isn't great with archiving and labeling either, as the concert that was included in the boxset was labeled as Berkeley when it was actually San Jose. Moreover, they only released the second half of the concert when the entire concert exists. Very confusing, but there you go.
