What an interesting concept for a song! The story of Icarus has always been a lesson of hubris - but that of overambition. In this song Starset almost flips that on its head and calls out Icarus for not being ambitious enough. It's like Icarus wanted to escape the Earth but never committed fully to the mission. It fits well into the whole theme of the Horizons album: Wanting to move forward, but constantly getting in our own way, both as individuals and as a species.
The “lalalala” for some reason makes me think it is Icarus singing. It is distorted and faded, Almost like a faint memory of his confidence that he felt before he met his undoing.
personally whenever reading about Icarus's story, i feel both angry and sad for Icarus. in a sense this song reminds me of the relationship we have with ourselves as humans. we have dreams, thoughts and ideals about the world but then insecurities like Icarus did. Icarus was made for skies but called his bluff, these lyrics make me think that Icarus himself was aware of the potential he had but scared of facing all the consequences or realizing the hardships he has to go through so then blaming the world for tying him to the ground. the song indeed is open to interpretations (many of them actually) but Icarus sometimes feels like "a manifest of facing yourself" to me. such an art!
Yes, Unbecoming and Icarus are a perfect combination, I love how so many of your songs can be thematically matched up together, even between different albums!
@Selin Naz Sur I'm not sure but Back to the Earth also sounds like a future reference to the Icarus haha (There is a space probe burning as it enters the atmosphere and there is also the sun in the corner?)😅
Thematically, this sounds more like a response to TRIALS than anything. Where TRIALS was more optimistic about the future, believing that the things we go through strengthen us, ICARUS tells the story of someone who failed, but refuses accountability. Really interesting, if that was the way it was intended.
Personally reminds me of someone who used relationships to pull herself out of her depression, but her toxicity and her lack of self care destroyed said relationships and flung her further down

This song matches and balances the two feelings so emotively. That feeling of confidence and elation, rising high. And that feeling of endless failure and falling. And it’s beautiful. I always loved the tale because it was a story about how overconfidence and ambition ruin people and ultimately killed icarus but I love this one but this interprets it in a way no one has thought of before, his hubris wasnt his ambition or overconfidence it was his lack there of.
