- On this SPECIAL EDITION of The Movie Podcast, we welcome back Anna Sawai to delve into her new FX television series SHŌGUN. Following our discussion with Anna, we are also joined by Costume Designer Carlos Rosario, who shares insights into the intricate process of bringing the series to life through wardrobe. Set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war, the series is an original adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Shōgun premieres with two episodes on Disney+ in Canada and on Hulu, and FX in the United States February 27, 2024, followed by new episodes weekly. @disneyplus @hulu @FXNetworks

This is the first time I've watched your videos, and firstly I want to say that you guys are really good interviewers. You ask really good questions so that the responses you get gives us so much more information about your guests and what they do. I came to watch the interview with Anna but I'm really glad to have watched Carlos because it was so interesting to learn about the process that went behind doing the costumes (and getting the job in the first place). Thank you for your work - I'll definitely be watching more of your videos and subscribing!

Only few historical productions ever seem to be getting an authenticity to this degree and research as Shōgun seems to present !
From the fabrics, Kosode-patterns, use of Hakama to Kobakama… . The textures and specific textiles being very symmetrical aswell as consistently covering the pieces… .
Getting a bit of an insight in his thought-process so soon after airing the show is awesome !
Even more authentic than any Netflix docu-dramas.
Wow they mention the thorough research they went through for these series, and you can tell in the first 15 mins of the first episode. I wish more historical movies and tv shows did that.
She seems very fun. Shogun is amazing. I finished the book this week and I'm hooked on the show.... just a great job (and Mariko is such a great character).

From Japan to Vancouver? YES! Our Canadian gateway city to Asia! They would be right at home given
all the Asian culture in Vancouver. Mostly Chinese, but Japanese and Korean as well. I'm in Halifax on the
other side of Canada and I have met TWO Japanese ambassadors to Canada. I'm very happy I met Ambassador
Ishikawa. After the Fukushima earthquake, he was quoted in the press here as "having been moved to tears"
by the Canadian response. And I know what this coming Monday is too...
The one question we ALL are wondering is where will these costumes go after the show? Are they sold, are they going to a museum as a faithful reconstruction, will studio keep them and display at amusement parks or show runners got to keep something?
hope they extend to season 6 or season 8

I was fortunate to see 1980s NBC mini tv series and I see this new version. I have to say I like the 80s version better.
that's sad. I've not seen the first one, but the fact that you prefer that one to this implies this one is deficient in some way.
@@imisstoronto3121 It's nostalgia. I've watched the original in anticipation of the new show, and don't get me wrong, it's incredible for it's time. But the new one has the advantage of technology and so far, both the writing and acting have lived up to the hype

Did Anna grow up in the states? She has a perfect American accent.
Born in New Zealand but it seems also living in Hong Kong and the Philippines before moving to Japan at 10. I was thinking the same so looked it up. Definitely not a kiwi accent. My guess is she mostly went to international schools before 10 so she probably picked the accent up from them. Well that and tv. Not sure how long she was in Hong Kong for but I think they would have still been mostly speaking English in Hong Kong with a British accent 20 years ago. It’s probably different there now. I’ve even met Singaporeans who speak English with a an American accent but when I lived there 30 years ago Singaporeans had British inflections. English is the primary language there as well.
@@eddiel7635 Most likely International schools in Tokyo as you say.. Of which most have North Americans teachers or tho the IBO schools are tending to be a lot more devised these days.
This show is definitely going to win tons of Emmys after finishing watching all ten episodes. Absolutely phenomenal!

Born in New Zealand, but moved around a lot as a kid due to her father’s job. She’s seemingly lived in the US since college.
So happy we have so many nationalities so much diversity it’s a great Earth . Sad that many are lost in the idea of worldly unity .
"worldly unity' is often just fear of anything not like themselves.
I like how they don't use Portugese dialect and they speak in English instead of more subtitles.
It's great for us that only speak english. I do wonder how the Portuguese feel? 😆

@n857 it's fine, it makes sense to avoid a lot of language changes that would hurt the experience. If you think about the book it's exactly the same thing, it's mentioned they are speaking Latin or Portuguese but in the end, you are reading only in English with a few Japanese phrases here and there.
That is one gorgeous and sexy as hell woman right there. I love Japanese women. And I love Japanese films and TV series...many of those are so much damn better than anything in America from the past several years. I'm saving up to move to Japan one day. I love their culture.

I love Anna’s portrayal in Shogun. However the real Anna seems too self confident, very outspoken for Japanese lady and not really my taste. But for portrayal of Mariko she should be nominated for awards

As a Mariko myself, can we stop saying it wrong on purpose please? I know Anna can say my name correctly, but chooses not to. She is representing Shogun where it worked meticulously on the authenticity of Japan and the Japanese culture. There is no need to continue to pronounce Mariko incorrectly especially when she pronounced other Japanese names properly.
