I love that Tom took the effort to pronounce the Japanese names as accurately as he could. Anna gave very thoughtful answers. A very good banter between these two.
You can really tell when the actor does their homework in these interviews - it makes such a difference. Tom did an incredible job with the research for Shogun which brought out even more incredible answers and insight from Anna.
Tom is so patient talking about Loki. Like he's genuinely always willing to discuss it in such depth even after so many years/so many people asking about it. It's so nice to see compared to other actors who act as if that role is so beyond them, or be like 'did I star in that movie?'
Her character IS the hidden heart of the show. It's just one of the most powerful performances on TV. The chemistry here is so good I kinda wish to see them together in a project.
Just when I didn't think I could love Tom Hiddleston any more than I already do, he blows me away in this interview. The way he holds space for Anna Sawai when she gets emotional is simply beautiful, deeply kind and loving. And Anna Sawai, what an incredible soul she is. I've only learned of her recently, she is now on my very visible radar. They're both so generous with each other with their questions, responses, etc.
Thank you, Anna, for helping to bring an authentic Japanese story to audiences across America. As a Japanese woman, I spent my entire life looking for representation and seeking authenticity in representation of our culture. For so so long, Japanese characters have been lumped in with “Asian” characters-played by Chinese actors or Korean actors, voiced by white actors-and it has been so widely accepted as normal and okay. When “Crazy Rich Asians” first came out, everyone was asking me if I was proud of having my culture represented…I can’t explain how devastating it is to continue to find yourself and your identity folded into a giant umbrella of “Asian.” We have never had something that is authentic not only to our culture but to our people. ❤ I hope that you continue to find opportunities to play roles that bring you joy and recognition, and I hope that this is the start of media and Hollywood becoming more aware of cultural differences and placing importance on actual representation.
Good point about crazy rich Asians. Asia is 15 times the size of the US and there are so many different types of cultures and subcultures. Did not represent me at all
I say this without exaggeration but this might be the best paring I’ve seen because both are hard workers but also passionate. Loki and Mariko are incredible characters that were made from the hard work of two incredible actors. I look at these two as leaders as well and so I appreciate that. Also, yes I have bias towards Anna because I might be in love with her lol. So beautiful!🙏🏻
The plot would be good vs bad. Movie progress…it gets intense, morally, fighting for the sake of their own people, and then boom!!!! Another evil appearance threatens both of them and they join forces to defeat their new foe. Both falls for each other in the end and creates unity between the two! Sounds like a good movie to me.
Yes!! It was an absolute masterclass in bringing the audience through Prince Hal's youthful mischief and tension with his father to the gravitas of his Henry V. I loved that series so, so much!
A piece of my heart fill with so much love and tears when Anna Sawai asked - "Do you feel like you still carry a little bit of him(Loki) ? Tom - Always ! From all the fans of Marvel we Salute you LOKI !
The thing I absolutely love about Tom Hiddleston is that he elevates the comic book movie material, he’s an actor that 100% respects the character and the material, there’s no sense of snobbery, it’s just an authentic performance I have heard MCU actors sort of talk about their movies and their characters almost like it’s a dirty secret or sort of like a certain degree of embarrassment like they don’t really take it too seriously, as if “it’s just a silly movie and I get paid well for it” but when you listen to Tom talk about Loki, he really paints a three dimensional character and talks with a great deal of respect, appreciation and seriousness for his work with the character
Tom Hiddleston is one of the most eloquent speakers I've ever seen, and Anna was very honest and open with her answers and emotions, she is an incredible actor. This was definitely one of my favourite Actors on Actors
This is the best Actors on Actors I’ve ever seen. The deep feelings, and consideration they had for their characters and how that impacted them was so profound. You can feel how much these characters meant to them, and as a fan to see how much they love these characters as much as we do warms my heart.
Hands down the best actor on actor episode for me. They're both so respectful and curious about each other's process and every answer or an inquiry comes so eloquently. Both having calm measured cadence on the way they talk was so soothing to the ears. Love them ❤
Free will. Purpose. Sacrifice. Mr. Hiddleston and Ms. Sawai both exist in such a calm and deep space. Two extraordinarily sensitive artists. ❤ otsukaresama deshita
I'm Japanese and Tom absolutely nailed it by saying "Otsukare sama deshita"! It sounds so natural and perfect. What a couple of genuine, generous, honest and sweet people! They have such good chemistry!!
37:08 Tom: "and it was amazing to drive into the sunrise with all of it in the rear view" Anna: (full-on listening and experiencing the emotion of the moment, exhales with feeling) "That itself is a movie." And the RUclips equivalent of an academy award for this pairing goes to... I really didn't know I needed these two in my life until they appeared this morning, wow. Such a kindred spirit of eloquent generosity in each, I was as fully invested in this conversation as you can tell each of these actors was in each other's careers and each other. Now strand them on an island in South Pacific and do a period piece where they are exploring each other's rich backstories. Make him not even entertain the idea of a romance because of the age difference, until she finally wears him down in the end. Yes I'm mostly kidding but in all seriousness, it would be a shame not to immortalize this beautiful improvisational chemistry beyond just this one encounter. Get the right people involved around these two, make it happen and take my money already. 😎
I want to see them perform together. Their chemistry of care and patience is captivating and sweet. Something complex with light and fun moments. This was beautiful.
Tom Hiddleston is another of the great British talent pool, an artistic genius with original harism, a distinctive way of being on stage and the extraordinary aura of mystery that accompanies him, making him an excellent impersonator of everything he touches.
Tom hiddleston such a humble gentleman who make everyone feel more appreciated and loved.. his presence speaks volume, he just connect with people and live in the moment which is just so beautiful and admirable
I'm glad she called out, "The Night Manager". I firmly believe that's one of his best roles. That series is absolutely amazing. Also, Hugh Laurie is absolutely *terrifying* in that series. Those two were brilliant in that series.
She is truely extraordinary. Didn't have the same background or career as Tom or many other actors did, but still manage to deliver such rich and deep performance.
As long as Loki could be intended as a minor character respect to big and famous one played in theatre he really loves him. He has been with and within him for 15 years, he gave him worldwide fame and glory but Tom payed him back giving him a deep and truthfulness and humanity
I love this interview! Never would have thought of these two actors sitting and having meaningful conversations with each other. I love that Tom gives Anna the space to be vulnerable even when she was crying. You could feel him giving her the safe space to express herself. He doesn’t judge, doesn’t try to control the situation, nor try to get her to stop crying but sits quietly taking in and waiting for her when she’s ready to talk. Mad respect for Tom here! ❤
Well, he has admitted, he was surrounded by two sisters that were full of praise and a wonderful mother. His father worked a lot and put him through school, so Tom could have the best education. He was raised to know how to treat women and was in a loving home. We all deserve such a wonderful childhood environment. He's an example of that.
The love and respect both Anna and Tom have for their own craft, and for each other's work, is art in and of itself. Two kind and generous human beings. What a stunning conversation. What a pleasure to watch and listen to. I am in awe.
Anna Sawai was so right to pick up on Tom Hiddleston's affecting performance in The Night Manager. I say the word "affecting" here because I genuinely feel Tom's presence on camera comes through his facial expressions which were bloody hard to detect in The Night Manager playing a spy and all these different lives...this same sentiment has translated beautifully into his theatrical work...Coriolanus and Betrayal (with the unmistakeably characteristic Pinter pauses) stand out - he really is a master of portraying a character's internal world through these subtleties and it's been an absolute joy to discover this in his work.
I love him and I enjoy The Night Manager immensely but I don't understand how he won a Golden Globe for Pine. He also said that it's one of his most creatively fulfilling projects and I'm like really?? What am I missing here?
Another insanely good pairing that goes above and beyond what anyone can expect or imagine. I'm sure they must be sick of hearing this by now but the person or team who came up with the pairings is a prime example of someone who loves and is really good at their job.
It’s AMAZING that Tom himself came up with Loki’s final line as an intentional callback 👀 and seeing Anna get emotional at the mere mention of the Japanese audience’s reaction was so touching. 🥹 These 2 are absolute GOATs 🐐
I know she has had to deal with a restrictive culture, but it has formed such a beautiful, humble, intelligent, and warm-hearted young lady. She’s such a gem. I hope her career continues to be fruitful and amazing.
I could listen to this interview as white noises to sleep peacefully. Both of their voices and accents are lifting of the weight of stress off my chest 🫠
Anna is incredibly gracious and respectful. You can tell she basically memorized and watched his entire filmography for this. Yes, she's pretty new to the scene and giving propers is a generally good thing to do but it didn't feel staged in the conversation. It's like it actually enriched what she already knew and visa versa.
She is the sort of beauty that you can't help just look at in awe. And she seems lovely too. Whoever she chooses for a partner will be a very lucky man.
I'm so happy with how Loki ended. As much as I'm going to miss the character, the story came full circle nicely. I wonder whether Tom picks up another multi-year character after this. I imagine he'd want to stretch those acting chops more now that he has the time. Anna Sawai is so adorable and bubbly. It's such a departure from the subtle and heavy emotions she hit perfectly as Mariko. I look forward to seeing more from her.
Nicely??? The finale was a piece of sh*t 💩 Made only for replace Loki with Woki (or Enchantress)!!! Sadly, but Nerdotic Daily was right, MCU is change to M-SHEU 😢
Not a romcom. The age gap is messy and also East Asian girls are too often fetishised with white men. There’s dozens of other types of stories they could do together. Or she could play his daughter.
This has been one of the best actors on actors interview I’ve witnessed. Such honesty and vulnerability by both Tom & Anna. The respect and generosity they gave each other drove the conversation to something authentic and beautiful. Bravo, Variety! More of this kind of content, please. Watching these kind of artists is so refreshing.
That was a very good Actors on Actors episode. Really enjoyed that. I think with both of them being very softly spoken but also very thoughtful in their words, you really could feel the care and love for the roles they played. That would have been a very cool episode to sit in on.
This is what a complete, articulate thought sounds like. Not a "like" after every other word. This was music to the ears, very emjoyable to listen to. Both amazing, deep actors. Love her minimal beauty and grace. Love both their respectfulness and gentleness towards each other. Well done pairing.
Such a lovely insight between these two actors and their characters. Thank you to the person who decided to pair them together. Both of them are so eloquent, it was lovely seeing them talk.
Sooooooooo when are we getting a movie with the two of them?. Not necessarily in anything romantic, just something we can watch and appreciate their acting because they are 🔥🔥🔥
Honestly, this has been one of the best pairings i've recently seen. Tom is really understanding and respectful, and the way he pronounces the japanese just shows how considerate he is. Anna is great, having watched both Monarch and Shogun. One of the best actresses that's starting to do more stuff nowadays.
Anna is so calm, sweet, talented and wise whenever she speaks. ❤😊 This might be a hot take, but I honestly would love her to be a part of an MCU role in the future.
Honestly I don't want her to be in it, MCU is in a predicament where they cannot get rid of the stint of the original cast! Idk it's just my opinion tho.
@@mysteriousoverpoweredbaldg9284 I don’t think that should stop her or anyone in wanting to be cast in a future MCU role. As for who I want her to play as, it’s Psylocke.
the most calm, attractive voices speaking sync wisdom. I never thaught that i could love the process of doing something to the point of shaping one's belief as the process of LOKI and SHOGUN in this video. thank you actors.
I got really surprised when Tom repeated that Japanese phrase so smoothly with perfect pronunciation even after he heard that for the first time. Pls say more, I'll teach you as a native speaker, call me Tom.
I see Tom & I click. I highly reccomend watching Tom in Coriolanus. it's remarkable. also I loved Loki as well. so much I wrote a paper on in my Psychology class. it's my proudest moment & I wish Tom the best in all his endeavors. and as for this lovely actress (Anna Sawai) I'm going to look her up. she's very elegant and I also love J-pop lol. anyway thank you Variety ❤️🙏✨
I love Anna so damn much. Her character and commitment are unparalleled. Can't wait to see her acceptance speeches!! More of her in everything, please!!
Tom's so gracious. He continually shifts the focus back to her, and to her story. He's aware of how he's going to be perceived and he deftly shifts focus away from his experience. Even when quoting Elliot, he says "it goes something like" before he quotes it perfectly. He knows that whole poem back to front, but he downplays that in how he speaks so as not to appear to be a braggart or intimidating. Some of that is just being a very particular kind of Brit - the kind who's a Cambridge graduate and who has impeccable manners, but it's also because he's innately kind and humble. I've never seen a single interview where he's anything other than that.
Thanks to Variety for this interview with 2 actors I adore. I really liked Tom's gentlman side, and how emotional he is when he talks about Loki. But Anna talking about the reaction of young Japanese girls to Mariko was so moving. I also learnt a few things. And I really liked when they talked about Hiroyuki Sanada. But it was all interesting, and you can see how they go from one role to another. I much preferred Shogun to Loki, but Loki was very good.
She is radiant, shining beauty every time i see her. ✨ The entire time i would see anna sawai in a film or show i kept saying to myself why does she look so familiar? Well she clarified it here. I loved ninja assassin and when she said she was in it I had to pause and be mind blown cuz that was where i knew her from lol
This was such an intellectually riveting and healing interview. It was such a pleasure to listen to two professional, fabulous actors have such a soulful and respectful conversation with each other. My soul is healed.
She is unfathomably gorgeous goodness gracious
I can’t even stand it lol like wtf 😵💫
she so pretty AHHHH
Yeah like holy sht. Haven’t had a celebrity crush like this since I first saw Charlize Theron
She's the hottest actress in Hollywood. Both figuratively and literally..
the first thought I had when I looked at her in this video "omigosh she looks like a princess" like she looks so elegant and beautiful😍
I love that Tom took the effort to pronounce the Japanese names as accurately as he could. Anna gave very thoughtful answers. A very good banter between these two.
And him nailing that last phrase of "otsukaresama deshita". Amazing.
Yeah he always does this! A very thoughtful person when relating to others.
You can really tell when the actor does their homework in these interviews - it makes such a difference. Tom did an incredible job with the research for Shogun which brought out even more incredible answers and insight from Anna.

That was a very good Actors on Actors episode. Really enjoyed that. I think with both of them being very softly spoken but also very thoughtful in their words, you really could feel the care and love for the roles they played. That would have been a very cool episode to sit in on.
This is two artists talking about art
Thank you for your service, Captain Obvious. 🎖️
This is the best segment of ACTORS ON ACTORS.
The beautiful thing about their conversation is that no question is insignificant. Anna and Tom gave thoughtful answers every time.
That little chuckle at 24:46
so cute
Tom has such emotion when he speaks about the end of Loki's story, so invested in his roles, I love him.
I was an extra on both Shogun and Momarch, Anna is stunnning in person.
10 seconds in and I’m already tearing up listening to Anna’s words. These actors have given us characters that are so special
I love how both of them are so invested in each others work! They're both amazing actors!
These two have so much similar artistic energy and probably the most comfortable voice and tone for an interview to listen to.
Frankly, I want to see her in more *anything*. She’s a fantastic actress and Shogun is a testament to that.
the most calm, attractive voices speaking sync wisdom. I never thaught that i could love the process of doing something to the point of shaping one's belief as the process of LOKI and SHOGUN in this video. thank you actors.
Tom is such a great example how to listen CAREFULLY ❤❤❤ these sweet manners melted my heart
I really hope Anna gets more amazing roles and opportunities in her career, I enjoyed her in Monarch but was blown away by her in Shogun.
I got really surprised when Tom repeated that Japanese phrase so smoothly with perfect pronunciation even after he heard that for the first time. Pls say more, I'll teach you as a native speaker, call me Tom.
One of the perks of being an actor
It is very obvious that she loves film. Studies it deeply and just gives it her all. Such a real actress.
Congratulations Anna for her Emmy win this week. Great acting
The best tv show ever. I was touched and amazed by the perfect mix of cultures clashing, expressing experiences in another language. Just wow.
I love Anna so damn much. Her character and commitment are unparalleled. Can't wait to see her acceptance speeches!! More of her in everything, please!!
I could listen to them talking to each other all day, their voices and manners and thoughtful answers etc...! What a great interview to each other!!
Bliss...
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
I love them both so much. Their work is overwhelming.
She’s so beautiful and smart and talented. He’s such a gentleman.
They are both so engaging and intriguing.
The one thing I loved about Tom is he's always well informed. Even in Marvel, he knows all the answers
I could watch an entire mini series length of this interview. So thoughtful, humble, insightful, and professionalism.
This was such an intellectually riveting and healing interview. It was such a pleasure to listen to two professional, fabulous actors have such a soulful and respectful conversation with each other. My soul is healed.
Good lord Anna is so damn gorgeous!! Whoever paired them up in this video should get a raise!!
