Matt, I honestly think your in the top of the top talent for RUclips car reviews. You walk viewers through the car and driving experience in a way that really lets one picture what sitting in the car would actually feel like. Thanks for saving me some trips to the dealer to take a few out myself.
Focus ST is such a fun and practical car. Loving my '16 every day for almost a year. Also, for anyone curious, the basic infotainment center really is quite good despite how basic it looks. Bluetooth connectivity is significantly more reliable than 2018 optioned out Outbacks I've been in, and the backup camera is the best I've used for a car in this price range despite how small. No glare, and the rear bumper is visible in camera view.
The basic screen is super nice if all you do is use Bluetooth. I’ve got a 2010 Flex with Sync 1.1 in the 7” touchscreen, and the Bluetooth on it is horrible. It never wants to connect. I drove my aunt’s 2017 Fusion with the basic touchscreen and it connected and did everything I needed it to. The only thing I wanted was a map. What’s nice about the outfitted newer 17/18 models is that you can update the touchscreen to have CarPlay and Android Auto.
Just bought one of these, sight-unseen, brand new (10 miles) from the dealer (who delivered it to me with the paperwork!), and WOW, am I impressed. I was just looking for a urban putt-putter to run errands with, all at a reasonable price and this was a real shocker, after I made the decision on paper (and after many reviews of reviews on YT). It was delivered for right around $21,000 total and although it's the base ST1, it's all that I had anticipated it to be--and more. I haven't had a new Ford product for a few years (got interrupted by a family member's employee purchase discount for FCA stuff) and I've got to say that Ford is doing a much better job with quality--and quality control--than anything I've seen, owned and driven from FCA. I have to believe this is one of the better buys out there for what you get, and I am looking forward to a few good years of owning this guy. I have another primary vehicle (SUV AWD) so the ST will be the part-timer and not really needed to be used in the (Michigan) winters. Looking forward to having a reasonably good performer coupled with reasonably good gas mileage and reasonably good form and function for a GREAT price!
Hey Matt, Nice review first of all! As an ST owner myself I wanted to make a few points. The Recaros are only offered in the ST2 and ST3 packages, the ST1 seats are not Recaros. I think another point worth mentioning is that a fully optioned ST is going to be cheaper than its competitors that are equally optioned. Sure, it' doesn't have the AWD of the WRX or the refinement of the GTI but I think it's a hell of a value, especially in the ST2 trim. I was cross shopping a WRX, GTI, and the ST and went for the ST because of its value for the $$, and most of all the smiles it gives you every time you get in. It's a great car.
I'm hearing different things. Some people say they aren't Recaros but I look at the Recaro website and they say that they are Recaro seats (just not leather).
I just bought my 2017 st1 today and now I feel like I should’ve got a st2 or st3. But the price was perfect. 17k wasn’t to bad with less then 1000 miles on it.
I test drove an st1 and couldn't get over the small ass scree and the seats the cloth seats just kept rubbing against my arm and was very irritating so I had to get an st 3 with the upgraded rims and plus the a plan and 4500$ worth of incentives which was nice
Looking at these prices is wild to me.. I’m considering buying a 2017 focus st with 98k miles for 18k… there’s a 2013 focus st with 86k miles for 16k… shit is ridiculous lol how times have changed.
I got to review a 2015 ST that was modified to 253whp and 330tq and that turned no torque steer into torque steer on demand. But it pulled like crazy and it made all the right noises so no complaints there. It also had the ST3 package so practically full option. Very nice seats those Recaro's! The Fiesta ST seems like more of a driver orientated car, the Focus ST seems like a grand tourer in comparison. But I like power and a GT like ride... So that isn't much of an issue.
I test drove one just like this. Base Focus ST. Yes, it's cheaper inside than a GTI but it's pretty fun and you do notice that torque. I like the car a lot. Not as pure fun as the Fiesta ST I drove. But as an only car, the Focus is more comfortable and roomier. The base Focus ST are very good. The shifter was awesome too. Considering dealers are selling these near me for under $21K right now, a pretty good deal at that price.
you have to consider, when talking about the outdated infotainment base model screen, that this car starts around 22k, and upgrading to an ST2 is like 2k more. still plenty cheap to get that larger touch screen unit.
Greenest Dreamer It depends on the dealership and if they actually have the color you want. Also, idk if it's just Michigan but it seems like the ST3 are harder to find. Most dealerships just have the st1's. Which is whatever because you can just upgrade it at the dealership.
Hank Bobotek I was talking about base msrp price. Good luck tho getting it out the door for under 20k tho. And NO dealer will sell a ST3 2017 for under 20k.
Hank Bobotek That's still not what you will pay out the door. You still have fees / taxes / + destination & delivery which is 875.00 that you will have to pay. Don't get butt hurt when someone corrects you.
I got my ST1 for 18k here in OK, most of the ST3's are selling for 25-28k around here. Definitely more affordable overall than the Golf GTI and the WRX.
People who tell you what car to buy are jealous that they can't afford what you can so they think they could spend your own money better than you can. The 2016 Mustang GT is the car for you so congratulations on the new one with the black package.
The main reason why I bought a 2016 over 2013-2014 Ford Focus ST was because of the LED day time running lights, rear camera(the focus st needed it bad trust me) and the numbers on the gauges doesn't look like it came from pep boys or it was hand painted. Other than that, its a great sleeper for the fools who think its just a focus. Nice focus.... Yeah.... Wow it's has a 6 speed.... Yeah.... What's up with those gauges.... Don't worry about....Why don't you hop in 😈😈😈
I have a 2008 HHR SS, I think that would be a great addition to Matt's review collection. I live near him as well so it would be pretty easy to get it to him if it did ever happen.
I have a pretty long waitlist at the moment but feel free to email me at mattmaranmotoring@gmail.com or send a Facebook message to the page and we can try to set something up eventually!
It's a nice middle ground between the regular Focus and the RS. I'm just glad to see Ford going nuts with all these performance cars across their lineup.
Those contemplating an ST should NOT be turned off by the "aged" ST1 interior. It flat works, especially for us "mature drivers" who learned to drive in cars with 6 volt electrical systems. Clicky-buttons may be old school, but are easier - and safer - to use while in motion. As far as Nav, my Garmin Zumo is familiar, and can be moved from the ST to my Corvette to my motorcycle to my F-150 to my wife's Subie, and I don't have to re-learn it - and re-program it - every time. Also, as Matt says, the ST1 seats are way more comfy than the Recaros. After doing my research, I selected a 2018 ST1 in white (like the test car) as to me, all the farkles added by ST2 and ST3 add cost, complexity and weight that don't justify the expense or convenience. And, they don't make the car handle better or go faster, so if, like me, track days are in your car's future, go ST1.
I agree. At first I was thinking of getting at an ST2 where I could have gotten the navigation and 10 speaker. Then I read the forums stating that they still have to improve in their sound. The 6 speaker isn't all bad and like you said, the buttons are easier while moving. I enjoy it but I am going to keep it stock until the warranty is up and then might mod it a little.
Got a '17 Focus ST myself and I agree with everything you said about it. It truly is a fun car to drive. The gas mileage is terrible (16 mpg/city) but then it's so difficult keeping your right foot out of it. The torque is addictive and effortless. However, I do have a Rosch catback exhaust on it so I'm sure that effects the mileage. But I also have more torque as well and I feel (and hear) it! Just a great car overall.
Randall Collins what the hell? That's how much mpg the RS gets.. Are you flooring it every single time or what? Probably with all features on like AC etc. Or what
DogDaybreak umm, it does add more hp and torque but it's not much (4.5 and 7 respectively after Dyno testing). The thing that doesn't hardly add anything are cold air intakes. AND it adds a deep rumble unlike the electric weed whacker sound that cheap catbacks add on many Japanese cars.
Roger H it actually gets 18 in the city and 27 on the hwy. Sometimes I keep it in low gears around town just to hear the exhaust so yeah, unless I drive it like a Prius, my city mileage will be a bit on the low side.
@@housepianist Have a used 16 ST. Stock all the way around. Am getting 28 winter hwy, as much as 42 summer highway, but averaging summer at 34. 50K miles
Fair point that the base model is lacking compared to the competition's base models. However, I wish you could have done an ST2/3. Cleans up the interior a lot.
i just traded my 2015 civic si coupe for a 2016 focus st exactly like this (same color and everything) and i absolutely love it. I am like 6'2 / 6'3 and i feel so much more comfortable in the st than i did in my si. i loved my si but i just wanted something bigger. also, the st has ALOT more power and torque so it is a lot more fun to drive too. so happy with my decision!
Matt, the 2015+ GTIs 210hp/256tq that is advertised are to the wheel numbers. There's numerous reports online of the new GTIs posting 260ish hp/315ish tq at the crank.
Dustin Shawley It seems like that's the biggest gripe ST owners have about the GTI. They look at its rated power on paper and determine it's too slow. They don't research the fact that the GTI is rated to the wheels and not crank horsepower. Mod-for-mod the GTI has more potential than the ST.
Something tells me your numbers are off. 18.5 OTD, means you're paying about $17K before tax. No dealer is going to sell you a base ST or $8500 off sticker I'm guessing.
Thank you for this video I asked for an updated video for the newer model st. And you delivered keep up the great work my dude really enjoy watching your channel.
Thanks for the review Matt from many others and myself. Just wish you reviewed the ST3, dollar for dollar (at least in Canad) its comparable to the other brands you mentioned. Nevertheless, another great review.
Just an FYI, the clips that were shown of the MK7 GTI interior were actually of the MK7 Golf R. They're pretty much identical but I noticed the blue needles in the gauge cluster
Do you feel it would be disappointing going from a 2012 mustang GT to a 2017 ST? My mustang is a weekend car and my daily is an 08 Civic. I was thinking about trading in both for a better daily driver.
I like how so far GTI guys respect St's. I KNOW that the GTI is a little quicker to 60 then my ST but I really enjoy the mountain driving of the ST. I Haven't driven curvy roads with the GTI Though, I bet it's great.
I dont like the rims that much thinking of swapping it out with something aesthetically pleasing and light weight but will it mess up the overall performance? Aerodynamics?cooling?
My 2014 ST has 36000 miles on it and the clutch still grabs very early in the throw. I'm guessing it also has something to do with the pedal positioning
Love the look of the Focus Hatchbacks, just such a shame with the interior quality and layout. I get it, they aren't meant to be luxury vehicles and they want to keep the cost down, but it's still hard to imagine getting excited about the interior every time I sat in it.
To me a blanket rating of a car isn't all that helpful. I can rate how much I like it personally, but my opinion isn't the only one. I try to just give all the information along with my objective feedback of how things feel so that the person can then decide how it rates to them personally depending on what they like and are looking for in a car.
Lol @ Doug score. That would be epic if you Mike from AV and Doug Demuro did a colab video together. Did some sort of cross country road trip to meet fans. Keep up the good work Matt! When I finish building my 2016 ford fusion 2.0 Ecoboost it would be an honor for you to review it.
Ive never liked how flat all the grilles on the ford vehicle have been turning into. When i got the ecoboost the first thing i did was get the gt grille cause it just looks much better
The suspension changes and steering ratio really improve the car. Plus people wanted to see another review since the last one was done nearly 4 years ago in the wet on snow tires.
My 2017 drives much quicker if you hold down the traction button for about 8 seconds. It has much less torque steer (without the electronics second guessing and fighting itself) and it’s not held back by the brake on the inside wheel sucking up power etc. The traction control is superior in the wet however, where power is less beneficial than the grip of the outside wheel through breaking the inside slipping wheel. All of this is only relevant if you are using quality soft rubber like Michelin Pilot Sport or Cup, Pirelli P Zero tyres etc, otherwise you won’t get enough grip without the traction control helping. Don’t buy a car without the Recaro Seats, they are outstanding.
Yes, it's deliberate to help people with the switchover that forget or missed the announcement. I'll make a new intro after a little while once everyone is used to the new name for a bit.
I never notice the dated interior. I'm too busy driving the hell out of my ST. So Much Fun!
SnooperGnar till it blows up like my old one
Matt Henry "old one" I wonder why..
SnooperGnar Why compromise?? You can have a fun car with a great interior, a la Volkswagen GTI.
There aren't many Volkswagen dealers in our area so getting it serviced would be a hassle and it's more expensive.
SnooperGnar gti is so numb and boring to drive compared to the focus st
Test drove one of these today and fell in love with it immediately...and I'm a civic si fanboy

Been watching your videos since you were Subaru WRX fan. Keep up the good work.
I dont like the rims that much thinking of swapping it out with something aesthetically pleasing and light weight but will it mess up the overall performance? Aerodynamics?cooling?
"@brazzers_s550" Classy choice there, Blaze!
Matt i've wondered, why aren't you using suction mounts for your interior driving footage?
Like my ST a lot, but it seriously needs a good LSD if you plan to use anything close to full throttle in the first two or three gears.
VAspeed3 or you can use your foot
so what kind of car does matt drive now? not the mustang anymore right? i been out for awhile.
Matt's been hitting the gym but skipping leg day. Also, aren't those the base non-Recaro seats?
My 2014 ST has 36000 miles on it and the clutch still grabs very early in the throw. I'm guessing it also has something to do with the pedal positioning
Hey Matt, can you try to review a Hyundai Elantra sport?
I really want to review one, think I have a connection to make it happen hopefully.
Ford should do something about those stock wheels!
Love the look of the Focus Hatchbacks, just such a shame with the interior quality and layout. I get it, they aren't meant to be luxury vehicles and they want to keep the cost down, but it's still hard to imagine getting excited about the interior every time I sat in it.
Do you prefer divided climate control so driver and passenger get two different temps or this singular control like this focus ST?
Glad the awesome intro is back!
you should start giving these cars a rating.
@X V
Drug Score.
Fuck Doug and the Doug score.
Thank God Doug score is at the end cuz it sucks and just exit the video when it starts.
Hey matt i am looking forward 2 buy a ford focus 2005 is it right that you dont have this car on your channel because i want some proper review
Damn bro never thought you would make a mistake like that, those aren't the Recaros at all. The st1 comes with regular focus seats with the st logo.
They’re Recaros, just not branded on
I just can't get over that tiny little screen on the ST1 package. I have more interior options & an 8" screen on my 2013 Titanium Hatch.
The tiny screen is fine by me. I use the phone for navigation and you can see for the camera. I am trying to drive not look at a screen.
I know they're pretty much polar opposites but would you choose the Focus ST or 350/370z?
a review on the new 2017 Maxima would be good. Thinking about getting one and a review from you would really help.
I like the introduction music. Its very dynamic.
I have a pretty quick MK6 GTI 360hp/380tq if you would like to review it ;)
Please do a review of it's main competitor, the new 2017 Honda Civic Si. :))
JordynWithaWhy lmao sorry bro but the si gets shit on by the ST
Noble Six But they have same 0-60 times and better interiors with wider tires and stiffer suspension. Oh yea, and it's not a Ford. Reliability.
Planning to review the new Si later this month.
Matt Maran Motoring Ok, thank you Matt. :)
JordynWithaWhy obously you don't know shit about the ST lmao I own a 1992 Prelude si, that's a real Honda unlike the new si
Like the review. I honestly pefer no touch screen, would hate if it was standard
isn't this dude the subaruwrxfan?
Ive never liked how flat all the grilles on the ford vehicle have been turning into. When i got the ecoboost the first thing i did was get the gt grille cause it just looks much better
Please -Please review the 2017 Sonic RS Turbo. I am very interested in your opinion. I own one and wanted to know what you think.
Do a review on either a Sentra sr turbo or nismo
What's the Doug Score?
They should through the Elantra sport into comparison with interior design. It has by far a better infotainment system
is there that much really different from the 2013 ST reviewed a while back which would necessitate a new review?
The suspension changes and steering ratio really improve the car. Plus people wanted to see another review since the last one was done nearly 4 years ago in the wet on snow tires.
it's not the same without the recaro's in it! way better bolstering than those seats!
Great vid keep up the great work bro!
How does the suspension ride quality compare to a BRZ?
Nice review, I'd still take the Speed 3 over this though
No upgrade the motormount if you want traction in a focus st
Do these come with a loud blow off valve? One time one of these revved past me and I could hardly hear the engine but the blow off sound was LOUD
ImaDjentleman the ST Doesnt even have a BOV stock, it uses a BPV system. Most likely an aftermarket BOV
ImaDjentleman was probably a turbo smart bov
Matt Maran Motoring your previous channel name is still on your intro.
Yes, it's deliberate to help people with the switchover that forget or missed the announcement. I'll make a new intro after a little while once everyone is used to the new name for a bit.
Great review Matt!
Several years old? This mans is living in 2021
I actually like the 13-14's look more than these ones. Especially the tail lights
We're Waiting 4 U 2 review the 273 hp 310 pft 2.3 liter Turbo.. Ford Focus ST 2020 - 21
Why does it have the old ST wheels?
Soren Lausen that's exactly what I was thinking. My 2014 has those wheels...
Cant decide over an 08 civic si sedan or focus st.. Thoughts?
Jose Aguilar si more fun
