Coming from a current ST owner. If your car is stock you don't have to run premium fuel it runs fine on 87 and the manual states the same. You will gain a few HP if you run premium when stock. I had a 2016 ST1 and now I have a 2018 ST3 and I love the car. I love the interior too. Not to many cars with a manual come with heated leather seats and steering wheel, ambient lighting, moving HID headlights, a great Nav system with a moonroof and great handling. I removed the seat bolsters on the passenger for my wife otherwise she refused to ride in the car long distance. After 2 years I removed them on my seat too. I replaced the plastic bolster with memory foam to fill in the space and they still feel bolstered just not so hard as we take the car on long summer trips. I did install the Ford performance tune (which you do have to run 93) and love the engine. The Ford performance tune really smooths out the engine and give you 360 lbs of torque. I don't have any strange idle issues at start up or full throttle acceleration issues that you mentioned or backfire issues running the stock exhaust but I have read on the ST forums that some people have had cold start misfire issues on earlier model years. I also run the intake from the RS. I do have a catch can installed and I clean the intake valves every 10,000 miles with the CRC direct injection intake cleaner. Thanks again for another great video. Also this guy found some nice wheels: ruclips.net/video/rzbbDLKPFN8/видео.html
I bought mine new in 2013 and owned it for 9 years, going 93,000 on it. VERY reliable and tons of fun. One of the best cars I've ever owned. I only modified 1 thing...a BOV. That's it..unmolested,
We rented one on Turo and were so impressed. The ST is so much fun. Then we rented a Type R and it was incredibly boring in comparison. We found a 2018 ST and it’s the best thing ever.
A couple things to note. 93/91 is not required from the factory. It will run 87 on an OEM tune. Oil changes cost about $35 max. Not $70. Not sure what kind of unicorn jiz this guy is putting in here but M1 works just fine and usually on sale at wally world for about $24 for 5qt. Filter is about $5.

I've owned my 2016 focus st1 all but two years...I have no complaints as far as how the engine runs/idles and sounds...I do have exhaust, cpe intake, boomba bov and cobb tune...never had a issue! I do now u can buy spacers to reposition the pedals! And ya I wish they had power seats!
I bought an ST1 for just south of 18k new. First mod I did was swap to a Steeda clutch spring; made a huge difference. Only issue I've had is the headliner, which is about to get a 2nd warranty claim.
I had a 2015 Focus ST2 (same color), I brought it in 2015, brand new. I kept it for about 6.5 years/93K miles. I did not modify a single thing on it, cause I liked it the way it was. It is recommended to use, which I did, 91 or higher octane fuel (not required). I traded in for another vehicle in 2022 and got $15K in trade-in value (because it was a clean, fully stock vehicle)
I just got a 15 ST last month for my first real car! Went from a nissan pathfinder to this thing and i can’t stop driving it. Cant wait to have mine as modded as yours someday
Hey. Live in Massachusetts. Great video. I have the ST2 2017 which I’ve had for 2 years now. I also hate the seating position however after what seems like a constant daily war of adjusting the wheel and seat I’ve finally found that having the pitch of the seat almost at 90 degrees helped a lot. Not all the way straight obviously but almost. It seemed to help with everything else. The clutch pedal feeling you’re talking about went away and the I finally feel like it’s good now. I’m 5’11 have the seat all the way down and the wheel almost all the way down. I also had the seat modified at one point by an upholstery shop for $200 where they flattened it out a little. Made a huge difference but I ended up taking it out as I missed the old Recaro seat feel. Pros and cons for sure! More good than bad. My next car though I’ll Consider seating position above all else lol! I have the Ford performance short shifter kit, steeds clutch spring, Ford tune, and Ford performance exhaust. They transformed the car especially the tune. Woke the car up!
I have a 2018 I bought new. Never had 93 octane in it and I get 34 mpg with a/c, cruise on trips. City where I live 28 mpg. If you going to autocross, maybe 93 to get full hp. Only mod I've done was catback exhaust when new and leather interior I do not have that plastic creeking sound, but I'm not pushing on the plastic parts. As far as oil changes, I could not find anything in owners manual, but i remember 10,000 miles, I change sooner than that and I use Motocraft semi syntic. Same issue with other rims, not much variety.
I have a 2015 front on a 2013. It’s not without challenges that I’ve found after buying it that way, but it’s pretty cool and I get a lot of people asking about it.

Hi Ben. Another great video. You were saying about the look of the rear of your car. May I suggest maybe getting an rs mk3 spoiler, and perhaps a rear valance made by maxton design . Also if you are getting wheels take a look at the new Japanese racing lightweight wheels. You can get the exact fittment size that you need in them. They come in black, matt bronze and gunmetal and are reasonably priced.
Awesome video Ben I'm glad you're happy with your Focus. This is my first car! You can say I'm a total noob cause I am. I just bought a rebuilt 2017 ST2 with only 17k miles for only $19k which includes tax! I assume that's a pretty good deal. (rebuilt title means I pay $83 for full coverage) The previous owner in California installed some mods such as: Cobb Short Shifter Plate A high flow catalytic idk the brand Flow master straight pipe A dinky depo racing cold air intake with green filter (better than stock tho) CPE solid motor mount Symposer delete Rear Wiper delete (for some reason idk I would never do that) And slammed ISC coilovers that didn't come with the spanner wrenches, the ride is way too rough. Some mods I wanna put in: Mishimoto oil catch can is a total requirement The classic rally armor mudflaps add an extra 5 HP :) Either CPE or Mishimoto Intercooler Wildwood big brakes CPE hot side and exhaust side charge pipes with preferably the HKS bov A Garret turbo idk which one yet. All these mods I found using EdgeAutosport / CJPony parts, with a little directional help from Cameron Alford's RUclips channel I just wanna know what I should do with these coilovers man. I need someone to tell me where ISC stands in the coilover market and if I should have them refurbished or get a different brand. I don't care about camber adjustment, I just want to be able to adjust the damping and the ride height for both front and rear wheels. What's the difference between the basic ISC and the N1 lineup, It looks like I have the OEM ford springs on the rear wheels.
Damn bro nice purchase! Love the mods, and idk man I think mudflaps add more like 10hp. Idk what to tell you on the coilovers tho bc I’m a noob myself😂
I have experience of both Bilstein B14 and KW v3 coilovers on a MK3.5 FoST and MK8 FiSt respectively. Not quite an 'apples to apples' comparison but what I can say is you get what you pay for. KW's are a bit smoother (less jiggly) over most surfaces and speeds though not totally smooth. Both ride better than the standard Ford suspension and indeed with SFS and lowering springs (but you would expect that!) Bilsteins are not far behind the KW's IMHO and are a bit cheaper where I am (UK) I have no experience with your current brand of coilovers so not sure where they sit compared to these two German brands but like I say you get what you pay for. Get the best you can afford.
I think that over the progressive generations of Focus, each one has had the styling of the previous one diluted down and sofened. The current Focus, to me, looks like a generic 5-door hatchback, with the rear lamps being just a melted blob of the previous generation's rear pillar lamps. The Mk1 Focus is by far, IMO, the most distinctive and most attractive.
My 2014 ST does not need 93 octane, and it never has misfired once in 102,000 miles. Does your throw a code when it does that? Owners manual says 93 only yields 11hp over regular 87 and no torque difference. I see no reason to run 93 unless I'm tracking.
7 years, 185k miles on mine. Had to replace a battery (after 5 years) which is normal. And I had to change out some front suspension parts but that was most likely due to terrible roads in my area full of monster potholes. She does eat tires but I don't rotate either so take that with a grain of salt. Edit: 2014 built Nov 13.
@@ValenNitto not yet, hopefully I don't have a problem with it. I'm trying to fool with as little as possible, I'd like to keep her another year or two. If I can get 250k out of her I'll be happy.
@JC No, South Texas. And it's not the entire city, just 1 small quarter mile of road that the city refuses to redo. They patch it, but won't tear it up and replace it. It's a 2 lane road with no shoulder and really deep ditches on both sides. I need to take a different route when I get new wheels. I'm currently on my 3rd set of wheels and I'm running a full size spare now 😔. I'm currently at 215k miles. My AC fan is dying, but it's still running strong!
No you’re right, you can use whatever fuel but it’s definitely best for the car to run the best gas, also I had that locked in my brain because I’m tuned, so that’s my bad😂
Yes but if you clearly read the buttom it says Also Premium fuel with an octain of 93 or higher will provide Improved performance and is recommended for severe duty or high performance usage. So basacly the 87 octain or lower than 93 is just for normal driving 😆
ST2- Sony upgraded sound system, sync touch screen (w/o nav) partial leather Recaro’s (non heated) and wheel package (with red calipers, I think you can get the wheels on any package) and the HID headlights, duel temperature control, and electronic moon roof/sun roof
Mine also came with an optional engine block warmer, but I think that’s a regional thing. The ST3 I test drove was a California car and didn’t have one.
Nice and fun beater, on my 3rd winter season in Chicago. Just running on B14 Bilstein coilover kit and symposer delete. Plan on doing modifications soon
Had my 2017 ST-3 for 6 months now been following this guy for a few months now trying to get a clue as to where to start with my mods, any ideas would be appreciated
You don't seem to have the ST3 shifter and hand brake. Did you replace them? Was thinking about upgrading my st2 to an st3 carbon fiber shift knob since my stock knob is worn after 100k miles but if the ST3 ones are wearing out that fast I might go third party. Also the car doesn't absolutely need to run 93 (although that changes if you retune). It's recommended and the car only gets maximum power out of 93 but the car sniffs out the octane level and will adjust timing accordingly. You just get slightly less power.
I have an '18 ST & I don't love it.... It's fine however the best MPG I see is around 23-24 & the front wheel drive sucks. Of course I love the RS but not the prices on them.
That idle misfire thing, you might need to check it out, mine has never done that in the 3 years i’ve owned it, and it’s been on full bolt ons for quite a while, but then i did replace the ign coils to msd coils.
It’s not really a misfire, it’s just more of a puff noise once every other minute. 100% normal and you have to get up to the exhaust to hear it and I’m straight piped so if I was on stock exhaust you wouldn’t be able to hear it.
Wow less than 30 dollars for a tankful? I know this is a bit of an old video but still. Fuel is so cheap in the USA here in the uk it currently costs me £85 to fill up my 1.6 standard focus. When I got it a year or so ago it cost about 60£ to fill.
Sigh. Mine runs perfect. Plenty of wheels. I run 1552 integrales and just did brembo upgrade. Stratified stage 3. Mountune exhaust among other mountune things
LOL, you're the first one that's actually said the thing about the rear of the car being super boring. I have thought the same thing since I bought mine. But the front, so aggressively wonderful!
I wouldn't call that "great" gas mileage but you don't buy a performance car for gas mileage either. My SE, with manual, gets 32 - 34mpg during the winter, and 34 - 36mpg during the summer, both in mixed driving.
"ONLY $153 per month for insurance?" I have a Focus SE and mine is $46 a month, full coverage. I would expect to pay more for an ST, but NOTHING like $153 per month.
I’m 20 years old, so it’s gonna be expensive for a while. I have friends who pay double that for normal cars because of where they live. I would guess you’re both over 30? If not then I need to be on your guy’s plan😂
@@BenLovrien I'm 25 in Cincinnati, but yeah I also have a friend who is the same age but he pays over double due to a past driving record. When I was on my parents insurance driving a 2004 Chevy Malibu I paid like $160/month but when I got my own insurance when i got the ST, it dropped substantially even with full coverage. I don't think that this is the case for everyone but it worked out for me. Bundling insurance with other things like renters or home or other cars can help save money.
Man I hope that happens for me soon, I have a clean record with no accidents or tickets and I’ve been driving since I was 16 but it’s still so expensive😭
@@BenLovrien - Yes, at 20 you have a double wammy. People your age get charged high rates (did when I was that age too), and also you are a guy, and that's another penalty. You are considered more likely to participate in "spirited driving" which can cause accidents. When you hit 28 your rates will start to drop. I am both an old fart and have a good driving record. Also, my Focus is a 2012 model, but still in nearly new condition. Because of it's age I get another break. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off to avoid another car payment.
WoW. 27 dollar for A tank? I live in the netherlands. For A tank you pay more than 85 euro, that,s about more than a 100 dollar!! I drive the Ford Focus mk4.
I wish, mine definitely did not. Vin on insurance showed everything, even my engine, trans, trim level specs. Was even listed as a “sports line” or “sports car”.
Octane booster is useless shite. The manual says you can run 87 octane, that's what I did for the entire first year of owning the car. I just got a tune so I'm running 91 right now, but you absolutely do not need 93 or even 91 or 89.
@@BenLovrien For sure, it can't hurt to run 91 or 93 all the time, but if it's not available to you and you're just wanting to run a stock Focus ST I don't think you're risking anything running 87 if you take care of other maintenance.
$30k brand new is a damn good deal for a turbo sports car. You're crazy if you think youre gonna get the whole business for $30k. You try to buy a Lexus sports car you'll spend over $45k brand new
I got 2015 focus st with 67k miles, the maintenance i did was just the battery. My battery warning light came on, it was due to the AGS wire was corroded and strip. It’s a common problem for focus st. So don’t think its the alternator or the battery problem.
@@BenLovrien the only complaint i have is the bluetooth sync sometimes disconnects, and i had to rarely pull the fuse and put it back to reboot. Also the AC does not seems to blow as cold as other car brands. I wonder if we have the same complain. 😅
The biggest problem is it's a FORD. I've owned 3 and nothing but problems. I have a ST that broke down in front of my house. Been here for two months. Owner and friends have been out 3 times and can't get it going. Time to tow it out of here. I'm sick of looking at it.

Flow master straight pipe
A dinky depo racing cold air intake with green filter (better than stock tho)
CPE solid motor mount
Symposer delete
Rear Wiper delete (for some reason idk I would never do that)
And slammed ISC coilovers that didn't come with the spanner wrenches, the ride is way too rough.
Some mods I wanna put in:
Mishimoto oil catch can is a total requirement
The classic rally armor mudflaps add an extra 5 HP :)
Either CPE or Mishimoto Intercooler
Wildwood big brakes
CPE hot side and exhaust side charge pipes with preferably the HKS bov
A Garret turbo idk which one yet.
All these mods I found using EdgeAutosport / CJPony parts, with a little directional help from Cameron Alford's RUclips channel
I just wanna know what I should do with these coilovers man.
LOL I just saw your video posted August 3 that you're moving to Arizona. Yea Cameron is cool. I live in SLC so not too far away
Both ride better than the standard Ford suspension and indeed with SFS and lowering springs (but you would expect that!) Bilsteins are not far behind the KW's IMHO and are a bit cheaper where I am (UK)
I have no experience with your current brand of coilovers so not sure where they sit compared to these two German brands but like I say you get what you pay for. Get the best you can afford.
Far too late to comment, sorry 😂, I have St3 66 plate in DIB just like this, even the same white badge in lays, love it
26-27 dollars to fill the tank 😮 , here in England it would cost around 108 dollars to fill it , we get ripped of so bad here 🤦♂️
Just picked up a 2017 kona blue focus st.
I pay 148.00 mo full coverage.
I live in Chicago,IL.
Every manual is super easy to learn on lmao I learned in a turbo diesel fox wit me.
One thing that bothers me on the my ST is the windshield wipers... at high speed they suck. Great Walk around video of the car though!
Does anyone know how to reprogram the keyfob on a manual 😢 send help 😅 changed my car battery and now the keyfob isn’t working
My 2014 ST does not need 93 octane, and it never has misfired once in 102,000 miles. Does your throw a code when it does that?
Owners manual says 93 only yields 11hp over regular 87 and no torque difference. I see no reason to run 93 unless I'm tracking.
when you said coming before a mustang i felt tht had a 2v now i copped my first one
Wow! Is it still on the same motor??
Have you had any problems with the clutch position switch? I changed it now it has an error which nobody can figure out.
@@ValenNitto not yet, hopefully I don't have a problem with it. I'm trying to fool with as little as possible, I'd like to keep her another year or two. If I can get 250k out of her I'll be happy.
You must live near Baltimore. Hands down the worst roads I’ve ever driven on.
At 2:00 you say it requires 93 octane, the ST manual says 87 is minimum requirement. Stock tune. 🙃
No you’re right, you can use whatever fuel but it’s definitely best for the car to run the best gas, also I had that locked in my brain because I’m tuned, so that’s my bad😂
@@BenLovrien Haha ok. Good video 👍
Yes but if you clearly read the buttom it says Also Premium fuel with an octain of 93 or higher will provide Improved performance and is recommended for severe duty or high performance usage. So basacly the 87 octain or lower than 93 is just for normal driving 😆
You need to tint the windows it will make it look 1000 times better
I have the same color as you and my plan for wheels are 18in chameleon rota grids
Sweeet! Good choice
You can use any fuel with the focus st? Says right on cap. I solely use 93 because it’s better and runs better but you can if you wanted to run 87
Hi.The base car is it the 2.0L ecoboost 250Hp ?
93 is not required. It is recommended. 87 works just fine
I actually really like the back of the car
Not having the Rs wing is definately killing the vibe.. I have one and I love it but it does still have a weird shape in the rear could be better
My dad and me made fun of the dealer as my dad was with Ford for like 15 years and me and him got a hell of a deal on it
No heated seats/wheel in the ST2 ( I have an ST2)
ST2- Sony upgraded sound system, sync touch screen (w/o nav) partial leather Recaro’s (non heated) and wheel package (with red calipers, I think you can get the wheels on any package) and the HID headlights, duel temperature control, and electronic moon roof/sun roof
Mine also came with an optional engine block warmer, but I think that’s a regional thing. The ST3 I test drove was a California car and didn’t have one.
Nice this is also my first turbocharged car :)
This was my first turbocharged car too!
@@jessebudelman Yep. No cars sold in Cali have engine block warmers due to the mostly mild climate.
Nice and fun beater, on my 3rd winter season in Chicago. Just running on B14 Bilstein coilover kit and symposer delete. Plan on doing modifications soon
It’s been 1 year, today since I bought mine.
Had my 2017 ST-3 for 6 months now been following this guy for a few months now trying to get a clue as to where to start with my mods, any ideas would be appreciated
I’ve got a couple videos that could help you get a few ideas!
Every 3500 miles, oil change?
You don't seem to have the ST3 shifter and hand brake. Did you replace them? Was thinking about upgrading my st2 to an st3 carbon fiber shift knob since my stock knob is worn after 100k miles but if the ST3 ones are wearing out that fast I might go third party.
Also the car doesn't absolutely need to run 93 (although that changes if you retune). It's recommended and the car only gets maximum power out of 93 but the car sniffs out the octane level and will adjust timing accordingly. You just get slightly less power.
15’ ST3’s didn’t have any of the Carbon options unfortunately
I have an '18 ST & I don't love it.... It's fine however the best MPG I see is around 23-24 & the front wheel drive sucks. Of course I love the RS but not the prices on them.
you hate it so much that its you profil pic hahaha gtfo lol
It’d be cooler if they just slapped on the LSD right out of the factory and didn’t wait until the euro 2019 focus ST release
Idk what you talkin about with the wheels. I’m running 255/35R19 +42 offset on my 2014 ST3 stock camber
looking to get a stock one soon , anyone have any issues with the transmission? ive read they can have issues
Never had that issue either.
Bummed to hear a golf bag won’t fit just bought one being delivered in a couple days they even fit in my z3 trunk lol
I just lie them across the back seat or put one seat down! Not too bad but yeah a bit disappointed considering it’s a hatch.
Let me give you guys my quick 4 year update on an st.. nothings broken and the car still hauls ass
Pretty much haha. They’re much better cars than people think especially when you take care of them.
Wow less than 30 dollars for a tankful? I know this is a bit of an old video but still. Fuel is so cheap in the USA here in the uk it currently costs me £85 to fill up my 1.6 standard focus. When I got it a year or so ago it cost about 60£ to fill.
Yeah back then I was paying 1.97 a gallon for 93😭
Sigh. Mine runs perfect. Plenty of wheels. I run 1552 integrales and just did brembo upgrade. Stratified stage 3. Mountune exhaust among other mountune things
How do u make that white thing show in ur grill?
What's your wheel spacers size
How many miles were on the car when you bought it? Sounds like a great price with the ST3 package.
43k when I bought it, it’s got 58k on it now after a year and a half of owning it. Dealer didn’t know what they had and it was 1 owner.
Yeah especially a dealer, great find.
16k wow I’m looking in to one this coming up year no less then 23k
This car made me good profit selling it. Got very lucky.
What colour is this? I have deep impact blue but that looks rs blue? Is that a custom paint or wrap?
With the newer looking ST’s it only came on the 2015’s, but it’s also on the older non face lifted ST’s too. I think it’s called performance blue.
Performance Blue
3.5k mile oil change ? Seems a little excessive , that synthetic is not going to break down in that window 😮
LOL, you're the first one that's actually said the thing about the rear of the car being super boring. I have thought the same thing since I bought mine. But the front, so aggressively wonderful!
There fabulous cars 👌
I will be looking to get one of these in a few months. Would you recommend the car?
Great video btw!
Suspension mods yes? Wheel spacers too?
Yes for both!
@@BenLovrien what size spacers?
I have about a two inch drop. 15 or 20mm?
I’m on 25mm spacers with a 1.5 inch drop
@@BenLovrien good shit. Maybe ill do 20mm then... im im north nj. You in CT? Could use a mechanic/parts installer
I’m from CT but moved to SC a year ago
Being short makes the clutch feel really awkward, and my st isnt an eco boost but yea cold stars be wildin
I’ll blame it on my short legs then😂 I’m almost 5’11 but it does feel like I’m pushing down
1:55 cries in 2022
I feel the same way in my st with the seating position. I always catch myself lowering or heightening myself in the seat too much
I wouldn't call that "great" gas mileage but you don't buy a performance car for gas mileage either.
There are a number of factors that could go into insurance costs. I have had a Focus ST for almost 3 years now. Issurance cost for me is $54 a month.
Nice automobile 🚙
fun fact, the ST shows up as a regular ford focus sedan on insurance.
I wish, mine definitely did not. Vin on insurance showed everything, even my engine, trans, trim level specs. Was even listed as a “sports line” or “sports car”.
How is a Mustang not sporty? Rally is more my style for sure. But calling a Mustang not sporty (excluding Mustang II's, some 90's models)?
It was a 2003, kind of a boat lol. Still a fun car though
Very lucky to get this car for that price how many miles on it
I got one in July 2018 st3 31k miles for 18.5 before taxes
Had 41k on it when I got it. Had it for 2 years now and it’s at 59k miles, love the car.
You have a lot of dislikes. Why buy and own one.? It’s a focus st, not a bmw, sti, or evo smh
Ayyyyyy
😎
365 days later aaaaaaand my engine blew up🤣🤣
Dang I can only get 91. I do put some octane booster ever tank or 2
Octane booster is useless shite. The manual says you can run 87 octane, that's what I did for the entire first year of owning the car. I just got a tune so I'm running 91 right now, but you absolutely do not need 93 or even 91 or 89.
Eh, I mean it’s cheap insurance to just run 91 or 93 all the time. These motors are sensitive and need good care, but you can run 87 in them for sure.
@@BenLovrien For sure, it can't hurt to run 91 or 93 all the time, but if it's not available to you and you're just wanting to run a stock Focus ST I don't think you're risking anything running 87 if you take care of other maintenance.
i’ve got a ford fiesta
$30k brand new is a damn good deal for a turbo sports car. You're crazy if you think youre gonna get the whole business for $30k. You try to buy a Lexus sports car you'll spend over $45k brand new
I got 2015 focus st with 67k miles, the maintenance i did was just the battery. My battery warning light came on, it was due to the AGS wire was corroded and strip. It’s a common problem for focus st. So don’t think its the alternator or the battery problem.
Same! Ended up killing my battery🥲 can’t believe that’s a common problem
@@BenLovrien the only complaint i have is the bluetooth sync sometimes disconnects, and i had to rarely pull the fuse and put it back to reboot. Also the AC does not seems to blow as cold as other car brands. I wonder if we have the same complain. 😅
Glad your still happy but I don't understand why anyone would get an ST which wasn't the tangerine scream
The biggest problem is it's a FORD.
I've owned 3 and nothing but problems.
I have a ST that broke down in front of my house. Been here for two months. Owner and friends have been out 3 times and can't get it going. Time to tow it out of here. I'm sick of looking at it.
