@@ddtalks2821 yeah from my limited experience with chin ups, pull-ups and dragonflag holds, usually the thinner the bar, the easier it is to complete the motion. Don’t forget about the paddung im sure was beneath Tom the entire time. These guys fall they get to eat dirt; Tom falls he falls on a cushion like cloud.
exactly this. if you watch the scene carefully, Tom is pushing the pole into his shoulder and almost tucking it besides his neck on one side. That's bound to be a lot easier!! not to mention the duct tape being slippery.
This was IMO one of the most fascinating stunts from the movie. I can't believe they never really talk about it. Thanks so much for putting in the work.

A lot of it has to do with genetics obviously, but how something works for you doesn't necessarily mean it works the same for others.

What actually helps is cardio. Scientifically proven. Basically humans have 2 and a half kinds of sweat, you have hormonal sweat which is the smelly armpit, crotch and feet sweat, and cooling sweat which is the watery salty sweat like a pig kind. (Which… pigs don’t actually sweat, that’s why they wallow to keep cool.) Apocrine is the hormonal and oily kind, and if it smells bad, that’s because of bacteria… not you. It shouldn’t really smell like much of anything. Eccrine sweat is the cooling kind and is odorless, again it only smells if bacteria is involved. (The half I mentioned is stress sweating which is usually a blend of both but releases much more water with no salts and has oils from Apocrine sweat and beads up and looks like that stressful sickly sweat.) Okay, so essentially Eccrine sweat is meant to cool your body down through evaporation, it works by having your body send all of the hot blood to the skin surface, hence why you feel flushed and kinda miserable, and then creates sweat to evaporate the heat away. This is a healthy normal form of sweating. But for overweight or out of shape people, having high blood pressure causes the skin to flush and triggers the sweat response, this can also be triggered by eating hard to digest foods because it takes water and warm blood to digest food which raises the blood pressure a bit, hence meat sweats. So basically, you can now reverse engineer this… if blood pressure and certain neurological systems cause sweating, then you can reduce excessive sweating by building some cardio, cutting back on coffee and alcohol and especially cigarettes and focus on easier to digest foods. But, excessive sweating can also be signs of underlying conditions like heart problems or diabetes, so if you sweat excessively to an extreme, you might want to see a doctor. Otherwise… you might just run hot because of poor health and cardio. For instance, at a normal resting body temperature, if you touch something room temp like a window, does it immediately cause a steamy hand print? Does normal activity make your face and chest look red and flushed? If so, you definitely need more cardio and better diet. My roommate had this issue where he was always just burning hot, dripping sweat everywhere… it was nasty. When he quit smoking and started jogging it improved massively. Good luck, and just remember that sweating is normal and healthy and not to get self conscious about it, but if it seems genuinely abnormal just talk to a doctor about it. Stay healthy, be good peoples, and always strive to be better than yesterday!
The American chap literally shows himself doing it on the same type of pole as in the film then they choose a much thicker, rougher pole to use for the experiment. Ok.
The duct tape was the whole problem. You solved the splinter issue but created a much bigger problem. Climbing a slippery pole is challenging, maybe impossible if too slippery. AND you're doing this upside down!
I think the bare wood would have been even worse than the duck tape--still slippery, but with splinters and nails to boot. Perhaps wrapping the pole with grip foam would have been a better option.
I watched the part which Tom Cruise did in slow motion just to compare and analyze. I found that with the smaller pole: 1. he was able to pull his elbows closer to his hip, shoulders aligned closer with his hands. This gives him more stability, he was able to rest his right shoulder on the pole, which in turn allows him to bend his knees in further before shooting his legs up to get that momentum needed to go up. While you guys didn't have enough room to create that same momentum. 2. he didn't have to bend his head sideways like you guys did. Look at 9:24, you'll notice Jonathan had to bend his head to the left, and his hip is falling to the right. This of course makes it much harder. That's why as he goes up, he was also forced to move sideways. 3. also the pole Tom Cruise used was shorter Great job with the video.
In the movie, the pole is much thinner and metallic with better grip and it's shorter. And I think you guys can easily do this if the conditions were the same... Beautiful videos. I'd love to see more...

I know the movie isn't realistic, but I have to imagine this task becomes a good amount easier to accomplish when your life LITERALLY depends on you doing this like it does in the movie.
One thing I just noticed is the pole in the movie actually looks very similar to the one he tried the day before. So you guys actually did a much harder version of the same thing.
Similar feat to try. Climb out of being tied to a pole, but being tied to it with your own body, no ropes, ect. There is a well-known technique to wrap someone's legs around a pole, needs to be about 3-8" diameter, and they are locked in, taught in most military training I think, probably more common than this. I never heard of or seen anyone being able to CLIMB out of this. If the leg lock is lose enough you can yank your foot out. However, climbing out is extremely hard, it has maybe never been done.
Amazing strength! We do this in pole sport too! but on a much smaller pole so you can actually use your cup grip. And there’s a flip from a shoulder mount that’s pretty wicked, it’s called fonji!
I would use gaffer's tape on top of the duct tape, as gaffer's has more of a cloth-type surface. Then, as I attempt to go up backwards, the way you two did, I would have a heart attack, as I'm 60 and stopped doing these kinds of shenanigans decades ago!
Wonder what Tom would say? Great to watch, you made most of it look easy. It’s hard and dangerous, but you looked after each other. Closest I’ve ever come to anything like this was when I was training (I was the only female on the course) to become an arboriculturist. One of my most scariest moments was when had to climb a pine tree with a strap, and spikes/spurs on our boots. I was told if you fell, you could take the skin off your face (it had happened to another student a few years previous 😮), hence I hovered around until the guys had been first 😅. Once I’d finished (face still intact) I felt like like I was on cloud 9, I would imagine you guys feel the same during your endurances. 🎉

OMG doing this on a wooden pole was such a bad idea, even with the duct tape. OW! There's a reason they used a metal pole in the film. Also, your pole is almost twice the diameter and taller. Well done though guys!

5:10 Die Hard is pretty much the only major action movie where the main character loses his shoes, I'm wondering if it actually happens rather often in extreme situations. You guys are amazing!
4:47 unintentional comedy is the best comedy 🤣
Happy this video finally happened. Glad i recommended it to you.
these collabs are just absolute gold anton/jon.
This is dangerous af, one small mistake at the top and you both your shoulder are gone...
Hats off to these mad lads for doing this successfully.
Anton, is so unfairy you having only 88.7k subs, your content is so goddamn good
Thank you sir!!
In the circus we call it Chinese pole!
Only the pole is thinner. That telephone pole has to be more confortable but more tiring do to the thickness. It was a great video for sure! You guys are pretty strong!
If you had Magnus there, he'd have told you you need chalk!
WTF that was very very impressive and scary to see! You guys are the most athletic guys i saw in all youtube
Awww!🙂😊🤘
I know the movie isn't realistic, but I have to imagine this task becomes a good amount easier to accomplish when your life LITERALLY depends on you doing this like it does in the movie.
@Matrick true lol
Standing applause. well done!
First time watching your channel. I'm pretty impressed by this. Good job guys. Stoked to see what it next. *Subscribed*
First time I’ve ever see your guys video, totally badass. Keep it up
One thing I just noticed is the pole in the movie actually looks very similar to the one he tried the day before.
We use that technique to rest!😅 check out video in the description. We made video about that. 🤘🙂
I hated working with expanding foam. Even one little drop is a PITA to get rid of. lol. Respect to him for having the patience to peel that crap off.
Incredible work guys , Great video 👍🏻💯
Amazing strength! We do this in pole sport too! but on a much smaller pole so you can actually use your cup grip. And there’s a flip from a shoulder mount that’s pretty wicked, it’s called fonji!
Also tip for grip: football gloves have silicone interiors and they give you grip like superglue
Your work is commendable...... 🙏🙏
I would use gaffer's tape on top of the duct tape, as gaffer's has more of a cloth-type surface. Then, as I attempt to go up backwards, the way you two did, I would have a heart attack, as I'm 60 and stopped doing these kinds of shenanigans decades ago!
This was awesome to see. Never doubt Anton and Jon.
Looks incredible dangerous when he’s on top of the pole
I was thinking that same
Jon did it in a very clean way. Kudos buddy.
Glad to hear you keep your face 💪😅
You two are freaking strong! Amazing 🎉
This is one of these random skills I'd expect someone like Pete Whitaker to randomly be completely amazing at :D
hell yeah you know Pete is smashing this one
You guys are awesome for being able to do this. Just want to play devil's advocate and say reason you had difficulties was 1 1st time trying it 2 I think MI pole was skinnier 3 it was a life and death situation for him where as you guys are having fun.
construction foam? No wonder hes built like a house😂👌
Incredible as always Anton🤙🤙🤙
@2:13 I got Kip vibes from Napoleon dynamite lol, when they had the slap fight and kip started whining lol 😂
This guy: my shoulder, damn
Love that you're repping the Rúngne shirt. I found you through Magnus Meatball and can't wait til you can collab again.
That auto correct on Magnus' last name is amazing :)
@@fredrikhult2950 lol, it wasn't autocorrrect. Meatball is how Anton says it.
@@jpotter14 oh I didn't know. That's funny :)
I like the effort you put into your videos it makes them unique and genuine
In the movie, Tom Cruise also squeals “Help me, help!” And his captors rush to the rescue.
Haha just kidding, great work gentlemen. This was epic to watch.
Thank you🤘😅
To be fair, Tom's pole wasn't nearly as tall as this one...
So sick, can't believe you attempted it let alone nailed it! Be careful man.
"Less than 1% of people on earth will ever have to potentially use it" Take out the % from that statement, and you're just about on the money.
I think its more than 1 lol- but a hell of a lot less than 1% yeah! Maybe 1 in 50 million would ever have a chance to use that skill in their life if they had it.
Dude climbed upside-down on that pole like a pro. Sick
Your pole is much bigger than Toms 🤔🙄😳😁
😂😂😂
I see what you did there and you're probably right.
Nice T-shirt !
Jon’s successful attempt is amazing !
Locktite? :') Why not just use strongman tacky? At least that comes off with babyoil.
this was fun to watch, thanks!
Парни такие красавчики!, такие самодостаточные, просто кайфуют!!!)))))
Great vid guys, so impressive 👍😁
OMG doing this on a wooden pole was such a bad idea, even with the duct tape. OW! There's a reason they used a metal pole in the film. Also, your pole is almost twice the diameter and taller. Well done though guys!
love the videos, love u rocking that Rungne
absolutely f*ing incredible gentlemen. Outstanding.
Thank You 🤘😊
these guys have the best friendship
"You won, you have blood." 😂 Just Anton things
Классний челендж, шикарне виконання хлопці👏
How unbelievably comically entertaining would it have been had they used exactly what’s required for Tom Cruise to have gotten out like this in the film🤣
im a carpenter and when that adhesive gets on you it takes weeks to wear off, you pretty much have to grow new skin. some serious dedication putting it on you intentionally!
Mab I'm so worried, try to put some cushion foam man, that gives me goosebumps
I love these videos. Keep em coming!
I admit Tom Cruise does many stunts, however consider that at times "movie magic" (editing) may be employed to create a seamless look to certain stunts. 😉
Tom really did the stunt with zero cgi nor stuntmen for this stunt.
@@The_Kirk_Lazarus Damn, really? Is that said anywhere or something, as while I'm not calling you a liar, this is a feat and a half.
@@qwormuli77 The man is driven to the point of obsession in performing his own stunts. He had to change insurance companies because one of them wouldn't insure him if he did a certain stunt in one of the MI films. He loves to learn and challenge himself in everything he does.
This is seriously so impressive.
It would take much longer, but maybe wrap the pole in athletic tape or hockey grip tape instead? Or some sort of paint/gaffer tape.
Duct tape is so slick on the outside.
great vid, congrats on escaping!!
