Rick Pitino's son Daniel died shortly before this game. It was a gutsy performance by he and the team through this tragedy.
Ironic that Pitino won his first regional final in Louisville at Freedom Hall.
It was beautiful watching Providence turn into the Cinderella of the 1987 NCAA tournament! I remember this entire game start to finish during my freshman year in HS! That day was a double victory for me seeing both Georgetown and the Tar Holes go down short of the FF!
I remember as kid being so sad gtown lost, I wanted them to re win the Big East again 1st Providence, then Syracuse, then seton hall.
Pitino coaching the pants off John Thompson. Thompson got sonned by Massimino, Pitino, almost by Pete Carril...always had a history of coming up short against superior tacticians.
He gave just as good as he got. Outstanding recruiter and coach.
