Many thanks for the video - it gave me the courage to not junk my PS-48. I had left it under the bed for years. The problem on mine was a bit more mystifying - the auto return functioned, but the motor wouldn't spin up the platter at start. The strobe also didn't light, so I suspected the microswitches had failed (at 5:35 - mine has two, stacked). After an hour of chin-scratching and OK ohmmeter readings I realised that the small swivel cam/lever on the main activation arm (at 7:25) had seized in place - it wouldn't let the microswitches operate. A bit of light oil, working it back and forward and suddenly everything worked! It takes watching someone else doing a fix to realise these units are fixable! Best wishes from London UK.
Greetings. I just fixed a friends same Hitachi PS-48 - same problem. I look like a genius!! Thanks for the great video and explanation . Much appreciated.
Great video! I recently serviced a ps 58 which is basically the full auto version of this deck. Had to be recapped and the pots where so oxidised I needed to replace them. Works like a charm again now though.
Interesting that you usually find the rca plugs the be the cause of a bad right or left channel. In my experience it's usualy caused by a fracture in the cable right where the cable leaves the turntable due to bending. Do you usually take some measurements before replacing the rca plugs?
I check for continuity first. Then check the headshell leads, the tonearm leads, then from the rca cable attachment board to the plugs. I have had failures at the strain relief area as well, but mostly the plugs.
You can just open the micro switch. There are little clips on the side that keep it in place which you can displace. Makes cleaning a lot easier. Usually it isn't needed but some are really dirty.
Great channel...subscribed. Purchased a PS-48 and traded in my Rega 2....love the look and sound!!! Has been working perfectly for 8 months...just recently the auto return is not working and I have to manually pick up the tone arm.....certainly not a deal breaker but was wondering if this is something I can fix myself? Checked eBay on parts and their is a bunch....do you know the part description? If it was too technical could probably order the part and find someone to replace. I would like to replace because I love this TT so much. Thanks and keep up the great work 👍
What chemical spray did you use to clean the micro switches? I have a PS48 doing the exact same thing as that one. I'm hoping it's just a dirty switch as well.
@@TurntableGuy I ordered the chemical spray you used and did the very same thing to my ps48 and it is working perfectly now. Thank you very much for sharing the video.
@@TurntableGuy by the way the hinges are a little on the weak side, can you recommend where I might be able to get a new set or how I can possibly repair the existing hinges?

Cool
Thank you so much for your instructive video, it has helped me a lot.
when working on any deck you should always remove the headshell and counterweight
And also put something down so the lid doesn't get scuff marks

I'm starting to find more and more tables with corroded leads on the electrolytic caps. So far, contact cleaner is all I've needed on pots.
Turntable Guy...excelent video...many thks for share....very important....happy new year 2022....greating from Guayaquil - Ecuador
TG sorry for my bad inglish...

A little too much work when you have to move equipment out as quick as possible.
@@TurntableGuy I guess.... Takes like 2 minutes max though. Might even take less time considering it won't be as much of a hassle to find an opening.

it could just be an adjustment. The service and owners manuals are available for download at vinylengine.com

Any electronic contact cleaner will work. Caig Deoxit D5, MG Chemicals Nutrol, etc.
@@TurntableGuy thank you for the information. I'll pick some up and try that.
