- Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Drake are often referred to as the big 3 but somewhere along the lines Cole and Kendrick would end up firing shots at each other on wax. These two started off as good friends having several songs together even teasing a collaboration project, so today we look into the complete history of J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar's friendship and beef.

I don't even think there was a Kendrick vs Cole beef.
For sure it’s always been competition
I don’t either. And if there was..it was J. Cole mimicking sentiments from Drake in 7 Minute Drill about how he doesn’t get attention unless he’s dissing or that Mr. Morale flopped. If i’m Kendrick i’m thinking “Cole you know better than to take any kinda cues from Drake of all people”..that’s the only thing i could see causing some type of tension
@@newnamesameperson397 not a complete beef but there was definitely tension there
@@acemccannis302 No disrespect, but I’m pretty sure 7 Minute Drill dropped well-before Push Ups. I don’t think either of them really took cues from the other either way. But it couldn’t have been Cole aping Drake.
There is. It's competition but Kendrick obviously has a goal and its cultural.
Kendrick saying "Did Cole foul, I don't know why You still pretending" in the song _Not Like Us,_ is NOT a "shot at Cole."
Thank you because dude definitely misread the assignment 😊
I blame the fans for constantly encouraging a _Kendrick and Cole battle_ for their own personal enjoyment.
Meanwhile, there are many of us who would much rather have a *collaborative album* with the two MC's instead having them going at each other.
After 47 minutes of this documentary, I'm still confused if the Kendrick and J.Cole album ever existed. 😵💫
From what it seems jcole was the only one hyping the collab album on the radio waves when in actuality there was only 7 songs they did together which ended up on other projects such as forbidden fruit and the one with dj Khalid
It was but then the diddy thing happened and control dropped

No he not but that's just my opinion respectfully. When I think of goats I think of people like ice cube, DMX, pac, eminem, outkast. Truly timeless artist had a message, changed the game one way or another, timeless hits, lyricism ect...... not saying Cole don't check some of those boxes, he's a great lyricist but there are allot of coles nothing truly different about him that hasn't already been done, again not dissing him just my personal opinion.

Kendrick told Jermaine, "Don't come to school, tomorrow." 😅
😂😂😂😂 facts.. he told him “when you see me walking up, just walk the other way so it doesn’t look like you set him up”
Nah, pretty sure Q told him that. That’s what I heard at least. Q said “Kenny ain’t fucking around this time”. They’ve all been shooting competitive subliminals forever but this time shit obviously got personal and Cole didn’t wanna go there.
Or to wear a red shirt. 😅
I think Kendrick winning the Pulitzer price rubbed Cole the wrong way. I think he thought he would reach those milestones before Drake or Kendrick.. that’s why when Kendrick was away- Cole went feature crazy.. but Kendrick returned and snatched the crown back! So I could see how he got pressured into releasing Might delete later-
that control verse really fucked up the game but it’s kinda funny dot was already trying to take Cole spot before he even met him lol
?? They had met by the time control came out . Remember Cole produced “Hiipower” which released 2011
I never took the “falloff bar” from count me out to be a Cole diss. That song is literally a breakthrough in therapy and him coming to accept himself, faults, mistakes and all. I think he was saying that he is his own worst enemy hence the “nobody but the mirror looking for the falloff” Meaning he can’t blame anyone else for his shortcomings etc.
It takes a mature grown-ass man to realize that rap beefs are not just entertainment but tend to get personal. Not everyone can actually comprehend what Cole did and it's okay.
As a person who is a fan of both Cole and Kdot, Im pretty sure it was friendly competition between those to untill Cole understood that Kendrick was aimining for Drake and decided it wasnt the time for that. I dont know why people acted like Kendrick went after Cole similar to Drake lol. Both respect eachother and understood that the competition had to be put on pause to take out the bigger problem. Its a smart move from Cole.
No it’s not.
Since when has QUITTING ever been ok? You can lose and still get respect. Quitting has never been ok….. sports, rap, life. Wtf
Cole backing out of the beef is looked at as weak, but I honestly thought it was really mature. He admitted he only fell victim to the pressure of those around him over a diss that wasn’t even directed at him really. People forget, they’ve been friends for years, and a lapse in judgement may not have changed that. Those who were mad at Cole, really were just mad he didn’t back up the trash that YOU were talking for him.
Those 2 days everybody called TPAB trash was hilarious. Cause a day later everybody was quiet😂😂.
from a rap standpoint, it's weak, but personally, it was really mature if him. he did sacrifice his abilities to say he's the greatest tho

Hot take: I think what Dot did could be the best thing for Cole. Really was tough love. As an underappreciated artist, Cole used his feature run to set himself apart from Dot and Drake bc his albums weren't holding up to his counterparts in the court of public opinion; it put him in the convo, but never at the top, always #2. His feature run filled a void, he sacrificed conceptual pieces for traditional bars/lyrical exhibitions that was still artistic and dope, however, requires a high volume to sustain, and can be more entertaining than impactful if without artistic intent. Not saying Dot will deserve credit, but I think recent events may inspire Cole to revert to 'Concept' in The Fall Off, where it won't be just another lyrical exercise, but a deep dive into Cole's fundamental thesis: Choosing Yourself even if it means being underappreciated.
(Also, I use underappreciated loosely. Cole being in consistent convo of the big 3 is solidified, he's just often put at 2 even though his feature run was changing that narrative).
Good point
Well said. He’s been spending a lot of time trying to prove he rap really really well but it would be safe to say looking back, people have more jcole favorite features than jcole favorite songs. His highest highs of reference by mainstream fans is “Johnny P Caddy” always first .
Perfectly said
You missed the Benjamin line on euphoria
Talk about it
Drake doesn't deserve to be on the top 3 list..these are true authentic rap geniuses..
I'm so glad you pointed out all the cole sneak disses bc I noticed them too. every time I tell ppl that a cole line is a kendrick diss, they'll respond with deep denial because of cole's whole kumbaya image. you can tell cole gained a lot of confidence during kendrick's lengthy absence and he felt the #1 spot was finally his for the taking, so he sent many many shots during his feature run. first person shooter in particular is riddled with disses that I caught on first listen so it annoys me bad when ppl keep asking "what was in that song to make kendrick mad?"
Facts. Nigga essentially said Kendrick name while putting himself and drake competing for number 1.
bro j cole didint sub k dot at all in first person shooter lol
him saying steppers and him saying him and drake spider man meme is out of context k dot was supposed to be on that song
@@nateengida3814 he definitely did and that's okay. this is the denial I was talking about tbh bc rappers diss each other on the same song all the time, it's a way of competitively saying I'm the best. ppl think cole mentioning the big 3 was props but it was actually him telling kendrick i'm above you now ("not the two, not the three, im the U-N-O" "we the big 3 like we started a league but right now I feel like muhammed ali"). you can believe what u want but the steppers line is a very obvious kendrick diss, it is not out of context at all

@@cnp215I think Schoolboy Q did and the only reason I'm saying this I think was because of Kendricks black air forces/party just died track. It seems calculated that he was tired of the type of rap music in the mainstream that's been coming out and really the best way he saw to maybe change that direction was take down the person most responsible for it. And that's Drake. Cole doesn't really fit the same style as Drake if anything he's more similar to/the type of rap that Kendrick approves of and wants to be the mainstream. So I think Schoolboy Q knew from Kendrick that this was his end goal so advised Cole to back out
Nothing happened. There saved you time
Never forget April 7th
Sme important that’s not mentioned is that 14 fhd had the message of Cole snatching the crown and destroying it, basically saying it don’t matter who the no one is and that them people should just enjoy all the artists. He even repeats and and explains that in the sequel prologue song in the end: sorry for snatching crown but I had to do it to show there won’t be noncore kings
They never really had beef honestly and I think Cole back our because TDE told Cole naw it’s personal between him and Drake
Nah he said he had been losing sleep prior to being pulled aside, which happened the same night he apologized
It's a pity they had a fall out. Looking at the videos with them when they were younger and how they talked about each other, it's clear they vibed really well together and respected each other. But the industry is so competitive and media and fans always pitted them against each other, it made it impossible to work on the project together. All in all, hip-hop lost a great project because those leaked and a few released songs JCole and Kendrick did together were gold and I wish we got to hear more.
I feel like Cole always felt some type of way about people comparing him to Kendrick and putting him above Cole, so when Kendrick went silent after Damn, Cole thought it's a chance to climb higher and sent some subliminals here and there. Kendrick let it slide because it was still competitive and he's the same way. However, after Cole started not only collab with Drake all the time but involve Kendrick's name in the conversation when Kendrick didn't want anything to do with Drake, that's when Kedrick decided to step in. I don't think it was ever anything personal between them.
There is no beef, this is a stretch.
7 minute drill wasn't removed days later. He made the nasty move to wait until first week numbers concluded.
I feel like they never even had any animosity towards each other, Kendrick’s problem was obviously all about drake, and Cole felt compelled to respond to Kendrick after like that
Apologize in a Rap Battle makes people calling you soft and got you embarrassing
I respect j Cole for that since he s like friends with both or has a relationship and coming how messy the battle became for Drake and kendrick him engaging in all that stuff when he s nit feeling makes You not sound confident which 7 min drill in the example he deleted IT cause he doesn t even felt IT :)but at the same time that whole goat talk no one f with me attitude îs done
I feel like the king of New York line cause pac is born in New York and raised in Compton later on(idk what age he moved there) so it went both ways towards like pac could be the king of New York too but it’s biggy
One minor detail missed, Kendrick used J.Cole Adlib in his pop out concert for his Alright performance basically indicating that the apology is accepted so I think the collab project might happen 😅
Did we really need a break down on this. J cole spat for 3 years straight talking about how he the best then ran away. The end. 20 second video
When it comes to real rap beef analysts (there are only a hand full on RUclips)
Drake won the beef with Family Matters, Taylor made Freestyle, Buried alive Interlude....
Unfortunately in the battle against the industry and toxic social media he lost.
Kendrick lost the beef due to being a complete hypocrite and a liar unfortunately...
J.Cole Lost his credibility in ever being on the top 3 debate ever again.
Drake trying to put them all on the same record was him trying to control the narrative and to basically have Dot agree they are on his level and Dot truly does not believe that. 😂
Honestly, if I am J Cole, I would cut both Kendrick and Drake out and do my own thing. It is too bad, but neither one of them showed any respect after this whole thing went down.
I think the conversation they had after Control dropped, both artist realized it’s for the good of the culture. They threw shots out of respect. Nothing too crazy in comparison to the flames Kendrick had for Drake.
He told Cole back out because it was personal with drake j Cole was not scared
Lmao... if that helps u sleep at night

Kendrick did Cole a favor his issue was with Drake. Though most of the damage Cole did was to himself. If he would’ve just stood his ground and not got into the beef anyway he would’ve been good. Because what he did look like he was in his feelings more so than it was about battling. I respect him for apologizing but I feel like he should’ve stood his ground by not getting in it the first place if he didn’t have the time to battle.
