I agree with you. I've been a lifelong geek for over 30 years. The problem as I see it is that the debate today lacks respect. We used to disagree about all kinds of things passionately, but we all understood at the end of the day we were fans of the same movie or TV show or video game. Now, there's no respect for one another and everyone's opinion is so malicious. Like you said, people will form an entire opinion about another person based on whether or not they like the story development of a TV show. It is insanity.
There's alot of toxic and simp fans out there including fake fans that just on what's popular and try force changes that go against lore to piss of the fans
The problem isnt fans. Its bad writing. Since the writers strike studios are terrified to call it out. I dont think its "fans" per se......just trolls being trolls.
How many writers' strikes have we seen in recent years? Is it really that bad? They haven't seemed capable of turning out even one really good movie in all that time.
Agree and disagree. George Lucas created the Prequels and many fans hated what he did and they bullied a lot of the actors. Say what you want about the prequels, I love them, but it's not always just the bad writing in my opinion.
All excellent points, Jay. Having so little invested in so many of the current franchises, I watch you without any axes to grind. I enjoy your videos for you, without feeling threatened by something you don’t care for. If only people could approach fandom with the wonder we all started with - that first comic, first movie, first game, etc. Thanks for sharing as always, Ms. Fett.😊
I think you're absolutely right, the internet is an overwhelming thing both good and bad. Politics should be kept out of games, movies etc and return to being proper escapism Great video as always, stay safe and stay beautiful!
It's almost a maxim that 'the personal is political'. it means we care about EVERYTHING and then that feeds into media. I think you need two contrary thoughts. Media is meaningful. It can explore deep things about the human condition. It allows you to simulate situations. It allows you to explore moral conundrums. It can normalize. If you watched 10 random films and all of them included ham-fisted narratives of girl bosses, that wouldn't be something to just shrug off. I don't want to be joyless. But there are some films that strike me as philosophically horrifying. A recent example was Furiosa. The film ends with making the titular character mythic through an act of protracted sadism. I was perplexed by what the audience was meant to feel. But escapism probably does require that you have an ability to switch off. If one of the (many) purposes of narrative is to engage in play, then being unable to switch off would impoverish you.
Your content is always entertaining. it can be overwhelming putting yourself out here for all to see and criticize but most of us tune in because its good, insightful and informative stuff. you're a class act. God Bless ya"
I do agree with you Jay, I beleive the toxicity is similar in a way to Road Rage. Often normal every day people can become raging hate filled maniacs because they were in their very own domain and someone did something like cut in front of them, or have a sticker they don’t like and suddenly It’s On!! I admire you for continuing to be yourself and doing this job despite the unacceptable and un called for Vitriol.
And the saddest reality about all of this is that it will never stop, if anything it’s going to get much worse to the point where regular and decent convos will be a thing of the past
It's never going to stop but with discussions like this that shine a light on it and put it into perspective it puts a kind of understanding on it that allows people that engage on it to reflect on it and people on the recieving end to not let it have a negative impact at least
The reason is polarity 🤷♂. Mainly due to left vs right fighting. And in my opinion, the reason this has become a big problem in recent years is because social media in general has allowed people to lock themselves in safe zones/echo chambers with like-minded people, and started attacking the other side, after a while, each group started to see the other as the "enemy". Eventually, when one group sees something that is considered rooted in the influence of the other group, then the first group will passionately attack it, as something that must be done to stop the other side's influence from growing. The simplest example of this is the conservative (right) fight against woke culture (left).
Glad to see your channel cover some of the more cerebral, big-picture ideas and how media affects us as a society and a species. What a time to be alive
I been telling my friends this for a while. If your life isn’t going anywhere you’re more likely to be disturbed or sensitive to silly things like disagreement in a hobby.
Good video! I heard a similar idea from a Christian pastor: "We weren't built for omniscience." We weren't meant to see everything going on in the world and hear everyone's thoughts at once. We literally can't handle it. We were meant to focus on our local community at most. The moral of the story is: politics ruins everything!
Not just "fans", look at climate nutters, the alphabet people, the reddit politicians, etc. All are crying out for religion and they make their "cause" their god.
I love your channel. I never hesitate to watch your content. Your thumb nails are always transparent. It intrigues me & I love hearing other people's opinions. I've always sought out both the positive & negative opinions of others. I don't care if other people hate what I love, but I always want to know why they hate it. Nobody keeps an open mind anymore. All people want to do is bully & fight in the safety of their parents' basement. They are just too afraid to fight & argue in person. Please don't ever let them win Snarky Jay. Just let all their hate & anger make you stronger!!! Sorry, this comment is so long, but it had to be stated. Keep it up the very entertaining videos.
Two reasons for this: first, they have pointless, empty lives if the most important thing in their world is a fictional movie character. And second, they know that they will never suffer any consequences for their bad online behavior, so they have no reason NOT to behave badly.
Its really weird seeing disagreements, whether over entertainment or politics, devolve into weird threats and not taking real world violence seriously. Its like social media broke people's brains so much that they don't view other people and the things that happen to them as real. Our brains aren't meant for all this.

The situation on what is happening in the video game industry is pretty crazy and there are so many of those DEI people trying to go against fans of games and just video games as a whole, its practically an online civil war in the gaming industry.
I think the anonymity point is a huge one. Many studies show that people are way more aggressive and rude when their identities are hidden. It’s not the only problem, of course, but it allows us to not see someone on the other side of an issue as a person, but just as an idea that needs to be destroyed. This was a really good video, Snarky. I think it’s something that those on both sides of the Marvel/StarWars/DC/etc arguments should keep in mind. One side doesn’t have to win a screaming match, just don’t engage with what you don’t like. Dollars will speak louder than tweets to these companies.
A dude I met at a hash bar studied AI at Stanford, and he explained to me that he looks at the internet as a gigantic algorithm where each person connected to it is a variable. Eventually, all variables reach convergence and the equation resolves itself. It is something that has stuck with me since. To that effect, I think off the internet as a dark forest full of predators and it is a new environment no human brain has ever dealt with before. It takes a few minutes for life to adapt to something and evolve...and so all of these people losing their minds is a result of information overload, or what we call brain rot.
As someone who's been in toxic fandoms, and brought out the toxic side of me, you're spot on. I've had to cut myself off from fandoms because I realized I was putting my identity into them.
Snarky Jay is a delightful blend of humor and insight! The witty commentary not only keeps viewers entertained but also brings a unique perspective to the content she critiques. Whether she’s making sharp observations or sharing funny anecdotes, she has a talent for turning the ordinary into something truly special. I'm never tired or bored listening to her reactions because I'm always learning something interesting.
I liked this video, and you're right, people shouldn't trash you or anyone else over fandom reviews and opinions. I prefer the other stuff, but you are insightful and interesting and that's why I come back. How about more jokes! :) I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!
The internet has brought us many things that are quite valuable. The dark side I'm afraid is that it allows for both anonymity and mob mentality at the same time. The mob mentality is part of us feeling like we're a part of a movement or other amorphous group. It gives us something to be tribal about., a sense of belonging during a time when we're increasingly isolated. At the same time, we are free to strike out with complete anonymity. We can say the most outrageous things and not be held to account for it. Sadly, far too many give into this temptation with mean, crude, or inappropriate comments. It is an outlet for pent up emotions and there no perceived cost to it. But I would say that there is a cost, and the cost is our soul. As insult and anger becomes more frequently expressed it becomes like a drug and people become addicted to it. This is what we are fighting sadly.
This is so true. It’s one thing to pissed off about what someone has said because eventually you’ll let it slide. But when you suddenly have thousands of anonymous others backing up your hate it just emboldens you to go further and hate more.
This video is spot on. Sadly ppl want to dictate other ppls opinions. They can’t help themselves they stand on a soap box of self righteousness . Keep killing it J
A very insightful video and I think you are right, we make sense of life through stories and are willing to die, or kill for the stories we use to existentially anchor ourselves, whether it’s a fandom, political or religious beliefs
Prior to smartphones, we lost access to the internet whenever we walked away from our desks, so in essence we were all forced to touch grass for more time during a day than we spent online. Cooling off time. Everything is immediate with our phones, there is no unsend button like in the olden days of email communication, or reading voice cues or facial expressions during conversations. The pandemic normalized non-personal interactions, social bubbles, and echo chambers. Combine these things with the points you made, and that’s a recipe for extreme toxicity. Everybody’s mom probably told them as a little kid, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” not so easy to do. It’s also important to keep in mind that two people with opposing views can both be right, or both be wrong, at the same time. Well, time to go outside and shake my fist at the clouds, I don’t want it to snow…
Well said Snarky! Hosts need to chill on all the hate, it's okay to not like or enjoy a property, and even to make fun of, but the constant complaining gets old. Another thing is the live chats... people need to stop being sheep in live chats! If a host says something you disagree with just say so, it doesn't have to be an argument or attack, but don't be so quick to believe everything one or more hosts/guests say. Have your own opinions!
'Don't hatewatch things you don't like' .... well the problem is people make that their job and thus fans of that product will flock to them to comment, which boosts views, engagement and the money they earn. Hatewatching is the biggest grift on this platform, if YT didn't pay them they wouldn't bother watching.
Real talk. Iv trained myself to not take it so hard when my fav I.P.'s fail me. But honestly I'm so trauma bonded to a certain animation series that if they re- boot it today I have no faith it will live up to the o.g. and it keeps me up at night lol!! 😅
Thanks to Snarky for her great observations. I especially agree with her ideas that lots of people interalize a show or character so much that a critique of it is taken as a personal attack, that the anonymity of hiding behind a keyboard emboldens bad behavior, and her idea of too much communication without😊 interconnectedness has resulted in bad behavior. Bluntly, I was born in 1963. It appears to me so many people born after the 1980s have fragile egos and little self worth. Before you blow me off w "OK, Boomer", watch the great movie "Dazed and Confused". It captured the past days of growing up. People were encouraged to grow up w a thick skin. We had parents who didn't hold our hand at every challenge, to learn our own way to adulthood, and being able to make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. Ultimately, the dumb jock that picked on me contributed to my being a stronger adult, able to navigate through the trials of life. Controversial, I know, but not any less the reality. And poliltics... As examples, Classic Trek, TNG and DS9 often delved into politics and social issues, but in an entertaining way that people could accept or ignore the message/lesson. Unlike the anvil used repeatedly in "Falcon and Winter Soldier" that often sacrificed escapist entertainment after a rough day at work by the viewer to instead worship lecturing viewers on our evils. Gee, why would I want to watch something like that? After that, why would I want to buy $50 in movie tickets and popcorn if I think I'm going to be lectured about society's mistakes, when I'm just looking to get away from life for 2 hours? 'Keep the nerd flag flying, Snarky Jay! And try to ignore the haters
Actually gave a very very good breakdown of the psychology between why ppl act crazy due to "we are all carrying something" and that we are too connected well done
Thanks Jay! You have some good points about the situation. One thing you did not mention is that some people do want more of what they got. They hope that the producers will turn things around the next season, or a sequel movie will make up for the current release. They are afraid the studio will give up if people do not support the latest version. Since you point out problems, they assume you are a threat. The reality is that allowing people to be disappointed will cause a lot more harm.
Sorry Jay, but I need to steal all your words from this one, because you nailed it so well and I don't have half of your articulation and you absolutely nailed it! You could turn this into a TED Talk. 👏👏
@snarky J You are so right and this topic is spot on. As humans, we used to respect each other's beliefs, opinions and politics. Social media and anonymmeans ppl can garbage and threats and get away with it. Way to expose ppl not jist on your platfirm Snarky J, but social media on the whole. I hope others see this and address on their llatforms as well and lets have meaningful conversations. PS: btw way Snarky J, you look absolutely *DIVINE IN BLACK!* I love it! You give female THE CROW nerdy vibes and am here for it all day!
@Snarky Jay This is a most enlightening and intellectual analysis, Snarky👍. I do feel that at the end of day, if creators listened to the fans, giving fans what they want and not subverting fan expectations, there wouldn't be as much of toxic fan problem.
Wow, a voice of reason in the void. Thank you for making sense. Politics has become a virus infecting everything and aiding in making fandom and more unnecessarily toxic. If only more people came to this realization
The problem is that people are making everything their identity instead of just interests. When people change from saying they like something to the ARE something, a 'fun' psychological phenomenon happens that makes any attacks or criticism on or about the thing feel like a personal attack.
A useful category is that of the 'guilty pleasure'. It means you can be a fan of a film and still allow it to have poor dialogue, some silly plot lines, or prurient interests. You can be a fan of a band and not be particularly proud of it. Some of the most heated backlash I've ever gotten was from Taylor Swift fans. They seemed to NEED her music to be exalted. Personally, I like The Cure. I mostly don't typically tell people that. If someone says the cure is goofy, it's not inaccurate.
I agree with you, I am open to conversation, we can like or not like a film or a series, that does not mean that we are a bad person or that we do not have the right to speaking out about it is unfortunate.
After a snarkyJay video i don't need to unload any frustrations anymore, i am fully unloaded after a snarkyJay video. Especially when she says things like manifest destiny.

Best video you've put up in a while. I've always appreciated how you've handled toxic fans and this is a seriously healthy, in depth and intelligent piece on it. People take this stuff way too seriously. A close friend of mine who I love and respect told me to watch Agatha and I just said "Yeah man I'll check it out" and I just never did. I obviously didn't think less of him for liking it. All this stuff is bullshit.... I like a show called Kite Man 😂 Keep up the great work. Your videos are gold ✌️🤙
I think that Dune&2 are the best sci-fi films in any universe... However, SJ, I don't hold it against you, cuz watching you rant&rave mysteriously calms me! Thans
As someone who is about to turn 51, I can vouch for the difference in interactions pre-internet versus post. There have always been shit-talkers, but they didn't have as wide of a platform- usually limited to ranting in the Letters to the Editor section of newspapers, weird late night shows on public television, and vociferous call-ins to late night radio programs- as they do now. That and the perception of anonymity removing culpability for their behaviour has been behind a rapid and vicious degeneration of discourse.
It is worse than ever. The credit goes to these idiot boxes all being connected. They provide anonymity which makes people bold. It's easy to be a jerk when there are no consequences other than a pretty girl with a mind sharing her thoughts. Nothing can be done about it until they realize that they wouldn't dare say the things they say to your face.
An intelligent point well made! No snark at all. . . sigh. . . I was a 25 year street cop so no one could affect me with a comment. On top of that, everything presented to me goes through a personal test. How does it directly effect me personally. I can go years without reacting to anything. . . .
You can't tell sometimes what is just click bait, hate bait, or even bot or so forth for engagement. Otherwise rest are just trying to be seen or heard I am sure.
Very well communicated. There's one pretty big aspect that I don't think you touched on very much. Its the toxic negativity that has been absolutely monetized on various platforms. I understand completely why you focused on the sides of the toxic fandoms you did; the toxic positivity, or need to defend something. I'm sure that's the brunt of what you get hit with. But, the point I'm trying to get to are all the content creators that become successful purely through relentless negativity. I think it goes back to creators like Cinema Sins, and yes, I understand they've sort of rebranded themselves as purely "satire." But content creators that devote hours and hours of repetitive negative content eventually creates a feedback loop that just creates more content in the similar style; bad faith criticisms based solely on tearing something down. Angry Joe can obviously be pretty relentlessly negative but those guys take the time to explain why something is bad in their eyes, and do it an entertaining way. You often bring personal insight and thoughtfulness into your criticisms. But others... not so much. It's just hate. And content creators are themselves part of the fandom. That relentless negativity evokes an equal response, one equally as devoid of logic and good faith; Toxic Positivity. When people throw reason and actual critical thought out the window, they become toxic negative or toxic positive.
I know fans can be Toxic, but i hope you dont decide to stop doing this because of internet trolls. You have been working with good people on the internet and have good opinions. Keep up the good work.

Well spoken. 👏
Nailed it. Great perspective. Well put.
Well said Snarky. You put it out there and I appreciate what you said.
GREAT video babe! 👏🏾👍🏾
Real talk. Iv trained myself to not take it so hard when my fav I.P.'s fail me. But honestly I'm so trauma bonded to a certain animation series that if they re- boot it today I have no faith it will live up to the o.g. and it keeps me up at night lol!! 😅
A great and important video essay. Thanks for making it and sharing it.
Stay awesome Jay , we love you
Snarky, you're wise beyond your years. I appreciate you and your opinion. It's a shame that so many won't understand this.
No toxic feelings here Jay. Sending you nothing but positive vibes and love today ❤.
My thoughts... Love you, Jay!
@snarky J
You are so right and this topic is spot on.
If if someone says for example, You're a loser for watching or not watching something, it's just words. That's the messiness of free speech. 😊
Hi Miss Snarky Jay, always like your videos, with that, this one was one of the best.
Why didn't she do her walk into camera entrance?
Unscripted video.
I don’t do walk-ins if it doesn’t feel natural. It’s not in EVERY video. If I can’t figure out a way to make it smooth, I choose to not do it.
This was VERY insightful. Thank you.
Hey Snarky, u broke it down & explained this dynamic very well ___ regarding the thoughts & opinions & disagreements
Well said. Keep doing what you do. Ignore the hate.
Extremely intelligently delivered and on point. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Be above it, Jay.❤
Thank you Jay for talking about this. Moral of the story: keep politics out of sports, games, movies, tv shows, comics, etc. It ruins everything.
I love your voice and the way you speak, you sound very smart and eloquent and I love your content.
I agree with you, I am open to conversation, we can like or not like a film or a series, that does not mean that we are a bad person or that we do not have the right to speaking out about it is unfortunate.
Hope you're ok :) stay positive 🌞
After a snarkyJay video i don't need to unload any frustrations anymore, i am fully unloaded after a snarkyJay video. Especially when she says things like manifest destiny.
Thank you, Snarky Jay. I hope you don't mind me sharing this.
People suck
yah people really make this stuff their whole personality. ive noticed its these newer kids im a 90s kid and this stuff is common sense haha but keep up the awesome takes
Thans
You are soooooo right about this. The Flash season 3 I hated so much, I never turned it on again, and The Flash was always my favorite DC character.
Interesting video. Well done.
Well said. I don't know whether it's possible to find that equilibrium in today's world.
Well said. Very well said
Very thoughtful video. The fact that it was unscripted is amazing.
