    Hey everyone, check out the description then leave a comment if you’d like! There’s a light build list in the video description and a couple links 🤙 Some of the clips have a bit of wind noise so I think I’ll get a wind reduction thing for some of the windier days, going forward.
    Cheers! 🫶🤩
    See you in the next video!

      Hope you like the video, will reply to the comments on Friday (NZT) as I’m off to sleep now 🥳 but enjoy!
      The aim was a fun commuter build, I think I’ll bump the chainring up to a 38t for more topspeed (after more testing) when I can get a blue Stridsland ring next time 😎🤌💙

    My 1991 SM500 is a delightful bike to ride! I upgraded it with a threadless stem, Surly Moloko bars, 26x2.1" Gravel Kings, and a Brooks saddle. It has become the bike I reach for, every time

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +1

      Awesome! That sounds like a great combo, are you liking the Moloko bars then? Haven’t tried them yet, but they look tempting! The Brooks/GravelKing combo is one of my favourite 🫶

    • @aleksleonardson6058
      @aleksleonardson6058 2 года назад +2

      @@toastyrides The Moloko bars are completely worth the investment! I wrapped the horns, a bit towards the grips, and towards the stem. I find that I spend most of my time in the horns. I think the 35° sweep feels more manageable than the 45° on the jones bar, or any alt bar for that matter. I'm keeping those till I die

    I'm just looking for inspiration, but seeing all these videos makes me realize how lucky I am to have bought a Killer V900 that is basically untouched, brand new, they swapped out the front fork for a Fatty ultra and then rode it twice, kept it in the attic. I'm going to be the first person to scratch it, thats crazy.
    Definitely going to buy an old beat up one to strip down and repaint, though. End result looks good dude! nice little wayback machine.

    I was super impressed with how you handled those TINY bearings! wow! I would have lost half of them. And you did it while wearing gloves! Great video, I enjoy watching people taking older machines and making them useful again. Thank you for sharing!
    I liked the riding footage too. I was impressed with the variety of non-automobile transport other people were using as well. Where I live 99.9% of people use automobiles and if the ride it's an exercise bike indoors.

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад

      They sucked 😂 I should have taken the gloves off, it definitely made it harder 😆
      Thank you for watching!
      Oh woah, that’s cool to hear. Lately more people have been using bikes, e-scooters and e-bikes 👍 it’s great to see as it feels more community-like, in a way, when you’re travelling slow around the city and outside. Great for mental health, too.

    Love it! Great timing, I just bought a 1986 Cannondale this week. The attention to detail for hiding the welds back in the day was impressive. It has damaged U-brakes, so my V-brake spares box can't help unfortunately.

      Thanks! I love the Kyote bar, very comfy bar 👍 yeah I think it could use cutting down a smidge to better fit in some places haha. But it seems to be ok so far, just have to be a bit cautious of them.
      I did actually smack the handlebar on a rubbish bin after I stopped filming, but it was rubbish day and bins were all over the path 🥴 I prepared for it and moved my hands inwards, so the barend took the force of it haha

    Nice! I worked on this same frame as a courier for years! Hey, get rid of the pepperoni death trap fork though, those were recalled because alloy forks are sketchy as hell and always fail. The headtube is 1 1/4, so you can easily put a 1 1/8 threadless headset and fork with a problem solvers adaptor. 🤙

    Just one quick thing, make sure that fork has a cro-mo steer tube. when the 1-1/4 pepperoni forks came out as standard in 1992 on models M700 and above, the forks came with aluminum steer tubes which had failures and were recalled. I am guessing that's why the fork paint color doesn't match.

    • @toastyrides

      Yeah that sounds about right! I don’t think James got the fork with this frame but I can’t remember and don’t know the full story, but it’s a cro-mo steerer on this one.

      @toastyrides  2 года назад

      @@jamesdarge yeah it’s a steel steerer tube, triple checked haha 👍 I guess it’s a replacement fork, which is cool 😎 Ooh and a quick Google shows it would’ve even had a bit of light blue at the dropouts, which I didn’t know! 🤌 if I find a similar colour then I may paint it 👍 or I could get it matched..

    Interesting find, I have the same similar Cannondale frame and fork with a Gary Fisher stem, I intended to send this to your counterpart in Australia Gary that works on old mountain bikes, but the shipping costs are unreal it would have been cheaper to fly there with it it's just so crazy, I still have the frame forks and stem not sure how it ever get it to Gary

    sick build! i am planning to build a retro commuter bike the same set up like yours. but instead of 8 speed, i'll use 11-42t 9 speed casstte. the problem is that i don't know if the cheap friction shifter i bought in ali express will work.

    • @toastyrides

      Hey! So my list of 59cm toptube bikes seem to run a seattube about 53-56cm (21-22inches).
      It varies, though! My Bridgestone is a bit less than that in the seattube but has a 59cm toptube
      Hope this helps!

      @@toastyrides Thank you, 21 inches seems too big for me, I have 182cm height. Usually I like the bicycles with a close reach, I compared the reach from my modern to this classic bike, and the modern one has -10cm which is quite a lot.

    Why would you "usually use cantilevers" - to stay true to the time the bike came from? V-brakes break much better, which makes them the more reasonable choice IMO if you intend to use the bike. Great vid!

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +2

      Oh I don’t really care much for period correctness on most of my bikes haha.
      Well setup cantilevers (Compressionless housing, koolstop pads and the correct straddle cable length etc) are more than strong enough. I can skid fully loaded and I weigh over 100kg(excluding the bike and load weight). A friend uses them on a tandem and he likes them on that, too.
      Cantis have a nicer progressive lever feel than v-brakes, in my opinion. V’s have a nice initial bite, but some of the longer arms of v’s flex when pulled hard.
      So it’s my preference, even though you may think v’s are better-my opinion differs and that’s allgood 🤙
      Thanks heaps, glad you liked the video! 🥳

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +1

      And as for the “if you intend to use the bike” remark, on average my most used commute bike is my Hardrock/Stumpjumper build (which has cantis) 😯
