I’m gonna say it. Bike owners in the Salt Lake City area are either incredibly generous with their old bike donations or they don’t have a clue what they’re giving up. Either way all of us viewers are scratching our heads about these crazy good finds.
Indeed, what a find! Looking at the general condition of the bike, you can tell this bike was barely ridden. Looking at the drivetrain, I doubt it made a 1.000 miles. I wouldn't be surprised if the brakepads were still originals... What a gem...
Brooks saddles and tape are terrible products and exist as a marketing ploy to exploit a brand identity. But they probably also sponsor the channel. For the rest of us, Selle Royal makes a far better touring saddle at a fraction of the price and just about anything is better than the awful Brooks tape.
Keep a steady eye on Craigslist. Often I find really good deals on bikes. Some are sold by Mother's , girlfriends, who just want it "out of the garage".
Gosh, I love those old Cannondales. Those welds are just beautiful. I have already done two builds of vintage Pennsylvania-built Cannondales. In fact, my 1993 H400, which is now a 1x10 flat bar gravel bike, goes out in a couple of hours once it warms up. $35? Geez. You understand that my constant build projects are YOUR FAULT, right? I learned a lot of this by watching you.
Nowadays aluminium bikes have so exposed welds almost as if it was meant to remind that you could not afford carbon. Cannondales no longer care about welds, but at least Rose still does.
Yep….my 20+ year old CAAD3 (Saeco colors) still looks great after many years of racing and training in all weather conditions and several crashes. And, while it’s no longer my “daily driver” (hasn’t been for a while) I still think it looks WAY better than any modern paint job!
It is worth re-packing the hub grease while doing this level of cleanup on a bike that has likely 20+ years old. The '99 Cannondale tandem I recently bought and rebuilt spun smoothly but was totally dry in the rear, and the grease in the front we well past its prime. It was worth the time to pop out the axles to clean and re-grease. I didn't have any free-hub oil, but now that I do I intend on cleaning and re-greasing the freehub before the summer riding season with my son. I also like to put a drop each of wet lube on the pivots of the derailleur and wipe off the excess after excercising them (easiest while already removed for cleaning).
That frame color is just outstanding. Looks really classy and retro with brown brooks saddle and bar tape. I think they must ship all the best used bikes in the states to your town or something. I could never get something that nice and cheap here in Jersey.

amazing find, nice build on the bar tape, I would finish on top towards the rider, as most people tend to twist down and thus with the direction of the tape
I bought a new Cannondale in the 90s to tour on and really loved it. I ended up selling it in Korea to an American soldier because I was moving to another country for work and wasn't sure how long I would be there. Out of all the bikes I have had, I still miss that bike for its comfort and fun I had touring on it.

I had a very similar bike - a t700 in a beautiful forest green. It also now has a copper-riveted brooks saddle, matching tape, a new cockpit with a quill adapter... Really similar! I took the old bar-end shifters and mounted them to the downtube because I hate bar-end shifters, i'm always hitting them with my knees. It was my grandpa's bike, too small for me but my old man rides it now. Such good looking and versatile bikes!
Thank you for this beautiful video. It keeps me calm. Watching before sleep in Ukraine. I hope some day I will get on my bike and just glide through the trails all over the country
I picked up a similar vintage T400 that was largely OEM aside from the hideous super plush anatomical saddle and dia compe brake levers. Only ridden it once but plan to head down a similar upgrade path with the saddle and bar setup and hopefully use it for the ‘24 STP ride.
I think I'd never find a bike like this in Germany for such little money, what a bargain! To give it further improvements I'd suggest to get rid of those cantilever brakes and add some Shimano direct mount race brakes. I just bought a really, really old German 'Staiger Trento' steel frame sports bike (bulit late 1960 to early 70th), which was advertised for 130 €. During my inspection I negotiated the price down to €80. It really needs a complete restauration, new paintwork and lots of new parts... Have fun with your stroke of luck!
I had a m2000 frame with pepperoni forks, force 40 brake set up. Dark blue with a silver flake and silver decals😍. Stiffest thing I’ve ever ridden haha but I loved it all the same. Really enjoyed this video👍
The paint on the old C'dales is beautiful and holds up well with time. My first real build was a polished chrome R something, I've never been able to define which model or year but building from scratch was a lot of fun. Thanks for the video.
Beautiful bike! I once had a Cannondale like this and made about 16.000 kilometers with it in Germany, Austria, Italy and Greece. Wonderful, great work!
Aw, man, it really chaps my hide how easy it seems for you to toss on derailleurs! haha. I can never get mine to work well without multiple attempts to adjust! Still, you inspire me. I found what I think is a '97 Cannondale M300 literally in the gutter and I'm going to attempt to fix 'er up. Looking forward to your next video!
Tip wrap the bars inwards ..your wrists flex inwards not outward when riding on the drops. For the flat. Wrists bend downward not forward wrapping your bars outwards can cause it to loosen over time and your cuts at the end go the other way
Not only are your builds fun but you recommend products I will probably use too. Restoring bikes has been harder than it looks on YT but rewarding none the less. Just maitenance and managing all the components was dizzying at first. But your vids are inspiration and I like the chill approach. Musical accompanyment is perfect.
I have an 80's SM cannondale 22 inch frame and the same colour as your Parktool stand. I hope to be able to get the old BB cups out as they are stripped.
Another great video, very relaxing to watch. I still have my Cannondale SM700, I bought it new in 1991, still ride it on and off road, I could never part with it despite owning much newer bikes. Apart from the frame the only original parts left are the front hub and handlebars, still has a 3x7 drivetrain.
Beautiful. Looked like it was used twice and left in the garage collecting dust for over 30 years Of course was then called a ‘touring bike’...now would be a ‘gravel bike’! Prob could fit 38-40 mm tyres. 3x7 drivechain flawless,no skipped changes,no messing with cable tension...replacement drivechain-cheap as chips! Blackburn low rider too.
Gorgeous. And the skill I really lack is setting up the gears and in this case the canti brakes - much harder than it looks. Hard to believe you only changed cables, and contact points. Great job.
I have a 95 F600, which had a similar parts spec, Acera X hubs, Alivio brakes, that CODA crankset. I ended up having to rebuild the hubs after not a lot of miles because the cones got pitted, and eventually I built a new set of wheels for it.
That frame looks like it was barely used. The wheels still had reflectors (why did you leave them on?) and the cassette had the pie pan. Upgrades I'd do: 1) Swap the canti brakes out for mini v-brakes 2) 2x10 or 3x9 drivetrain I bet it would be pretty cool if you did a follow up video where you restored the racks and bought some fenders and did a custom paint job on them then mounted them.
Well done. My only critique are the yellow wall tires. A nice pair of tanwalls would’ve looked infinitely better with the brown bartape and burgundy paint.
Where I’m from, you can’t even find old bike frames or parts for sale at all. I’ve asked every shop and always kept an eye out. The shops are great here but they are all new products
Only important thing missing is new tires. Should go Rene Herse 50mm. I'm running 43mm on my T800 but could go bigger (unless using fenders). Bar, saddle, good brakes and shifters already taken care of. Nothing like spending $300 to upgrade a $35 bike... Paint does look gorgeous.
Yes, a nice find. I too have found great deals. (Latest was Gary Fisher Marlin, my size, $25) But don't kid yourself. It takes a large investment in time to find them. For me though, it's ok. I love doing it.
Gorgeous. You did exactly what I would have done. Love the bar choice with the tape and saddle. I might have added new treads, 700x32 gumwall gravelkings would be nice.
Gravelkings because everyone is using Gravelkings? Nah, Schwalbe Marathon 420. Half the price, 4x the mileage, no flats, and about the same rolling resistance.
@@maxotterland I have gravel kings and really like them but I also have Schwalbe Billy bonkers on my klunker and I like those too, so I hear ya. I use what I like regardless of who’s doing it. Point I was trying to make was larger and a bit more aggressive treads might be nice.
(2023)The Cannondale I'm updating- to a modern rideable standard- is SO old, it has the train station logo ('88). It was the first bike ever to have a super thick down-tube, which became standard proportion for frame geometry. I'm lucky and proud to still have it, and to acknowledge its provenance and heritage. Called a "mountain" bike, but was equipped with no where near enough gears for mountain biking. Forgiven, considering its age, the very inception of MTB, albeit in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, no where near real mountains. Again, I'm so glad I never sold it.
Cool video and I love the color ! They used Imron paint. I obtained a H300 model in black a couple years ago that was in worse shape. It was sitting in a pile in the back room of a lbs. $30 took it home. With new tubes tires and chain I ride it but SRAM derailleur skips and shifts hard with well worn grip shift to boot . Got to switch to Shimano. Also the aluminum frame is a hard ride on my old bod and thinking a suspension fork might help.
A couple of questions to inform my own bike maintenance. 1) It looks like you didn't touch the wheel bearings. I would have thought that greasing them would have been in order if not replacing them altogether. Why? 2) I usually soak the parts in a degreaser then let them dry. For the parts that I cannot soak, like the inside of the bub, I use automotive break cleaner as it cleans well and dries completely in just a few minutes. Why do you use WD-40?
Nice job.... since it was only dusty, it would have been easier, yet just as effective, to leave it together and clean it all in place and only take apart things that needed to be re-greased on the inside!! I always check the wheels for true before finishing the job!!!
Wow that is so good!! I have ridden some great rail trails in the last couple of years and this bike would be absolutely perfect for them. I can see you riding the Erie Canal trail across upstate New York or the Great Allegheny Passage out of Pittsburg and crushing it. My friends and I are possibly riding the Katy trail in Missouri in October you are welcome to join us Brother. Keep up the good work.
I always loved Cannondale's "Classic" Paint and finish second only to Klein's. And I think if you ride them as intended they not bad bikes, I personally rode a modernised ST500 for years (and it still get daily use from my ex).

paint looks great for 20 yr old bike.
nice job with new bars..
Great find.... you obviously spend a lot of time keeping your eye out at the local shops.
That frame looks like it was barely used. The wheels still had reflectors (why did you leave them on?) and the cassette had the pie pan.
Upgrades I'd do:
1) Swap the canti brakes out for mini v-brakes
2) 2x10 or 3x9 drivetrain
I bet it would be pretty cool if you did a follow up video where you restored the racks and bought some fenders and did a custom paint job on them then mounted them.
Well done. My only critique are the yellow wall tires. A nice pair of tanwalls would’ve looked infinitely better with the brown bartape and burgundy paint.
Great choice of bars. The frame cleaned up great and I love the colour! Sweet build 👍👌😎
Amazing find. Only bikes I find now at goodwill is an old rusty huffy from Walmart and they want 75 dollars.
I’m baffled by how clean your hands are when working on the bike. The moment I touch anything I just get sticky grime
Wish I had a store with gems like that for 35 buck. Good job, as always.
That is a steal for $35! That frame looks amazing.
What a bargain and love the look with the bling. The bike deserves some supple tyres as it already looks like a comfy cruiser. Great stuff.
I would throw some Schwalbe Fat Franks on it.
I have some on my MTB/Road hybrid, theyre great
Very nice fine old shovel I like the brook saddle and tape and the way it turned out
This turned out so classy. Blend of colors make it look like a Gentlemans touring bike.
Wow, what a beautiful colour and bike. True classic.
Thanks for another great Sunday and coffee! $35 Cannondales… and your town is named Bountiful… I see.
I'm glad you saved that bike! Another great build!!
Yes, a nice find. I too have found great deals. (Latest was Gary Fisher Marlin, my size, $25) But don't kid yourself. It takes a large investment in time to find them. For me though, it's ok. I love doing it.
Great find its being in hiding in a garage for a few decades by the look of it not many of those around.
Gorgeous. You did exactly what I would have done. Love the bar choice with the tape and saddle. I might have added new treads, 700x32 gumwall gravelkings would be nice.
32s would be too skinny on that bike - you can go really big...
@@drewkallen I was thinking 38 originally but had no idea of the clearance. Current tires look like 28 to me? 🤷🏻♂️
@@drewkallen that bottom chainstay says 28 to me,sad because those cantis give extra room
That bike is a fantastic find at $35! Great build!
Oh man I love those old Cannondales! I still covet the R1000.
Wow. It's looking like a new bike now. Cheers from Philippines!🤙
I love the color im glad you kept it!!
Hi, could you please tell us what barends you have on the fatbike you're showing at 0:29-31?
$35!!! Where I live that bike is $350 all day on market place. What a score.
Awesome job! I bought an old Cannondale with a 2x7 set up and I’m working on refurbishing it. Love the thorough clean up!
Bike got what it deserved. Nice parts upgrade and an Oldshovel treatment 😊
This thing should well be worth more than triple is previous value now.
I always loved Cannondale's "Classic" Paint and finish second only to Klein's. And I think if you ride them as intended they not bad bikes, I personally rode a modernised ST500 for years (and it still get daily use from my ex).
Very nice build, I like the bar tape and seat combo. Your videos were a big inspiration for the T700 restoration on my channel, so thank you!
