I had a Assimar acolyte who screwed up a recon mission and lost some fellow acolytes. He was banished for that and for being too CG and not NG. Then he discovered that during that last mission, he got Lycanthropy.
He was found by Blood Hunters who trained him to control it. Now he hunts those occultists who he failed to kill the first time.
      Take this if you want.

Not sure yet why he'd hold this grudge against his own guide or his overall backstory but plenty of story telling potential there.

Heather Martin I did a similar thing with a drow and a high elf who were adopted siblings and were a fighting duo in an arena thingy. The drow, my character, was a shadow sorcerer/mastermind rogue, and the high elf was, if memory serves, an arcane archer fighter. The characters weren’t as stereotypical as you’d think, as my character was raised like a normal elf minus the superiority complex, and the high elf was raised by an orc clan, and thus worshipped Gruumsh, which was kinda weird for an elf, but still fun. I’ve always enjoyed playing characters with another complimentary character, and this is one of my favorite pairs.

People dont stop talking about them ANYWHERE. They're very flavorful and, more than that, are highly synergistic with many classes in the game. Any class their ability scores dont directly support, their racial powers offer useful options for various classes. Self healing is never unwanted, and every form comes with a level based damage bonus, that IS magical.
Flight is nearly always useful, and the major detractors of it say "well your wings get in the way and are an obvious target" and the aasimar get around that by having flight on-demand that goes away. No one knows just by looking at you that you can fly, so it's a surprise.
Their AoE fear save is charisma based, which isn't a common save to have, and offers a useful CC ability to any class. This can mean your battle master fighter gets access to fear, or your conquest paladin gets to optimize their fear benefits.
And scourge deals AoE damage to everyone and anything around you, no save. It's not as synergistic as fallen/conquest paladin but it's no less useful. Again, stick it on a fighter or monk or paladin and your melee attacker becomes more threatening - stick it on a crowd controller and they suddenly get a passive ouch field.

100% here for giving aasimar similar status to tieflings, as well as giving them non-angel celestial heritage. My aasimar character is descended from couatl so she has feathers where tieflings have horns to set her out from the crowd. My DM and I play up her angelic guide (a couatl) and her hexblade patron as her conflicting shoulder angel and devil (inspired by kronk in the emperor's new groove). She only made the warlock pact to piss off her guide and her noble family, but we enjoy using her patrons to pull her in different directions. I especially enjoy having her scream "you're not my real patron!" at her guide.

Aasimar Rogue would definitely excel in the social pillar of play, and if they went Protector, they'd have the mobility options necessary to be an incredible thief. "So, how did someone manage to scale a 60-foot tower with greased walls and unlock the window at the top?"
I'd imagine they'd be your typical "Thief with a Heart of Gold" character, both only targeting those that deserve it and helping people with the resources they acquire. Alternatively, they could be the biggest jerk of all, and just use their inborn good reputation to get away with some truly heinous crimes, because there's no way the Aasimar could possibly rob that orphanage.

I had an idea for a character who was basically raised by the church as a child of prophecy. A messiah. Thing is, when he got old enough to understand what they wanted from him, he started freaking out! He didn't have any great wisdom to impart! He had to watch every word unless he wanted to start a schism! So he snapped under the pressure and ran away. He became a rogue partially out of necessity, partly because years of being spoiled by the Church had gotten him used to getting what he wants when he wants it.

Kids, older people, good hard working folks would just stare at her, completely dumb founded and totally unaware that they were doing it and would forget that she specifically was there but would remember seeing a divinity of some kind. I always imagined Aasimar's being like this. If the Aasimar is good aligned they some what mesmerize lesser people of similar alignment and innocence. But if they are evil then evil people, and people with guilt issues are mesmerized.

We changed my language option from celestial to primodial as well. My character has whispy body tattoos on her back and arms which shimmer whenever I use elemental magic, and actually lift from her body and become wings when I cast radiant soul. I love her. 😍

Idea: Fallen Aasimar Warlock with an Archfey patron. They're fallen because they literally fell into the feywild, and their deva guardian didn't abandon them as is stated to happen in Volo's. . . they just lost track of them for a really long time. The passage of time works quite differently in the feywild after all.

For me, Teifling is "touched by evil", and Aasimar, "touched by good" (or "born of"). So Aasimar could just as easily be Chaotic, as Lawful. For for example I played a CN Aasimar Hexblade, who tried hard through a long campaign to "not become evil". That was fun - his back-story was simply that he was descended from the (CG) Arch-Fey.

Playing an Aasimar who doesn't know what he is has been a blast and I always wanted him to have a redemption arch but the story has lead him to recently come back to Port after all his party save for one died and he's pretty much starting a holy war on Omu now and is willing to sacrifice anything to stop the death curse. He was actually a minor villain (who was an actual tiefling) from the last campaign with the same group who, upon being slain, was resurrected to fix what he did in his previous life. He himself has no memory of his actions in his past life but anyone who knew him or at least knew what he looked like as a villain would recognize him.

We had a Fallen Aasimar Oathbreaker Paladin be the BBG for one of our campaigns. The amount of auras you can stack up is a bit crazy. Their once flaming holy sword had been corrupted so it dripped narcotic poison that turned to gas when it fell from the blade, and a proper demon weapon in her off-hand. Several blessings from arch devils, giving her some special stuff like "Infernal Sunder" on her basic attacks, and a legendary action to fly pretty much on demand.
Really wish I was the playing the Aasimar in our party, cause she was having a fun time with the character dynamic going on.

Yeah this is all wonderful advice! My Aasimar is a fallen and a warlock of Nehkbet the forgotten goddess of plagues vultures and protection. He became a fallen through the murder of fellow kin in an argument gone horribly wrong. He plays himself off as a human follower of the Raven Queen to hide his divine and necrotic aura. He is embittered by his experience but has that instinctive itch to help others due to his heritage. He took the deal in the first place to be able to soar the sky again as that was everything to him, and he is constantly running away from his past. If the Aasimar village in the mountains said they’d take him back, he’d fight to his last breath out of spite alone.

Nice, I made a Fallen Aasimar Warlock who is the son of a female Solar and Human male Cleric. My character's mom is one of the of those psycho church types who forces religion on her children. He's eventually disowned for refusing to live the lifestyle his mother wants for him and is living on the streets until he meets a beautiful girl who turns out to be a Succubus and seduces him to the dark side. She introduces him to her family and the Devils welcome him with open arms and spoil him. He eventually regrets his decision and decides he wants to undo the pact and redeem himself. The Aasimar stats really helped augment both of my important stats for spellcasting, fighting and especially with social I am level 7 with plus 10 in performance and persuasion its awesome. How he fights is slightly unhinged and raw but he likes to sing celestial songs and poems to the villagers and their children after helping to save them from the machinations of demons and devils. Tries to bring people closer to the light by doing good deeds and by exposing them to divine beauty found in song, poetry, storytelling. Bringing good vibes to people.

I am playing an Aasimar Protector College of Swords Bard , he is a sarcastic drunk trying to escape fulfilling his what he sees as his pre-ordained destiny. He is resentful for the fact that his fate appears already predetermined and takes every opportunity he can to try and circumvent his destiny, but no matter how hard he tries to go against his fate he somehow ends up fulfilling his destiny. Often ends up doing such daring acts of heroics as leaping into the front line to stand over fallen comrades and the like (which i portray as part of his destiny he was meant to fulfill).
As of yet i have not actually reviled to the rest of the group that he is an Aasimar, I am waiting for some desperate point in the game when he will have to use his abilities to save a fellow party member.

A Protector Aasimar of Thoth can have +1 Int Tiefling style. A Fallen Aasimar tied to an assassin background can take +1 Dex rather than Str in my books. This is typically the case where since so many UA Tieflings exist I would allow variant aasimar provided the player can produce a convincing backstory and character concept. Happy New Year!

13:30 What's this? A Fighter proficient in SOCIAL combat?! (aggressive negotiations ensue)
I like having Aasimar as part of a 'spectrum' of plane-touched people in a setting. In the one I played in for a couple of years, the world had places where the boundaries between planes were thin, resulting in the people who lived in those places spontaneously generating individuals 'touched' by the adjoining plane. Elves were particularly malleable (hence all the different sub-types of elves), with humans giving rise to Tieflings, Genasi and Aasimar. I forget if my DM had plane-touched for the Fey and Shadowfel, but those wouldn't be hard to make.
It really lowers the social stigma of being a tiefling if you're just from that town with the hot springs (a byproduct of being close to an infernal plane).

When he was young, he was killed by cultists along with the rest of his village, but he was resurrected by some adventurers, one of whom, a Paladin of the Raven Queen, went mad in the process. @@fhuber7507 "You retain any benefits of any features of your class, race, or other source and can use them if the new form is physically capable of doing so." That seems to suggest you could do it.
In addition, you keep your mental stats and saving throw and skill proficiencies, and you can concentrate on spells. You also can't use any legendary or lair actions if whatever you've turned into would normally have them. Which would suggest that the statement that "all attributes go by the wild shape creature" is what experts refer to as bullshit.
As for the wild shaped form's ability to manifest wings, the wings of an Aasimar aren't a bodypart like those of a bird, they're a magical ability as an inborn trait of their planetouched soul and thus physical capability has nothing to do with it. Volo's Guide to Monsters describes them as "luminous, incorporeal wings". And it's not a spell so you're good on the no casting part as well.

    My favourite race.
I made an Aasimar Paladin. Grew up amongst humans and got along with everyone, everyone liked him.
Finds out he's an Aasimar. Realises people liked him not because of who he was but because he was radiant/ divinely touched/ beautiful/ whatever. Realised that the dreams he had weren't his own and that he may have only become a paladin through brainwashing from an entity on another plane.
This manifests itself as trust issues and identity issues. He doesn't know who he really is and if anyone truly likes him for who he is.
To compound this, he is a gentle soul but the deva connected to him is a fierce, crusading and brutal one who encourages him to hunt down evil and slaughter it, which isn't his style at all. He's a scourge Aasimar though, so occasionally he let's the hatred of the deva take over and that's what the power represents, though he hates it.
Unfortunately... I haven't had a chance to play him yet lol. Really want to, love the idea of Aasimars.

Talk of prophecies got me thinking of how prophecies made me think of how most of the time in Fantasy stories, and quite a few games (I'm sure you can think of a few), that execute the whole prophecy system poorly, the prophecy is either clunkily handled, used as a brute force method to advance the story in a way that doesn't quite feel right, has ham/heavy handed administration, etc.
One story that I think handled the whole prophecy system pretty well was the Ring of Five by Eric Van Lustbader. The story is actually pretty interesting, being a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, but never in a way that makes things feel unnatural. The reason why I think Lustanbar handled the whole prophecy system pretty well was because for most of the book we just kept hearing one line from the prophecy over the majority of the book and then didn't hear the full prophecy until the story had progressed a considerable distance.
