Hey, nice to get the call-out for the tip on using a mask to pull line art off a black and white layer! Glad it was helpful to you, and nice demo on the use of color holds to enhance the look of the art by making the line art's color match closer to the surrounding colors so it isn't so high-contrast all the time.
Thank you for sharing these tips! The one on separating line art from the background is just what I needed today. I was taking the line art I scanned into Clip Studio Paint to separate it from the background with their "convert brightness to transparency" option but now I can cut that step out! :)
My biggest gripe is losing quality on anything I do rotate or scale with the transform tool. I’ve never encountered this problem with any other app besides Procreate which was baffling for me.
I only found your videos yesterday Jay and thanks so much for your really clear teaching methods and certainly for these tips today. I loved the shadow class you did as well. It was like mixing real paints and I learned so much and have it saved to go back to again. I already knew some of these tips but many more were useful. I really had not noticed the difference in colours when picking from a reference photo and so often use references but more for actually looking at how things are composed or shaded etc. However, what I often do, is to import a complete palette from a photo I really like and use that, and I wonder if the same thing happens?? Overall though, this slight change in colour saturation is not an issue for me and I usually just bump up up the saturation if it is. I wish I could join your Patreon but I have to limit the monthly subscriptions unfortunately or I could be spending a fortune each month I just don't have. I am going to check out your site for the brush set you mentioned though. So thank you very much for sharing here on YT! Sally 🤗
Thanks Sally, no pressure to join the Patreon, just watching and commenting on my videos already helps support the channel, so I really appreciate it! I think if you import a palette it should work fine, this is just a weird bug that I thought was ironic given the purpose of the reference window. Thanks for watching :)
Hi I am pretty new to art and question I am about to ask might be something basic and simple but i would appreciate the answer non the less. What’s the difference between setting background colour (let’s say blue instead of white) and setting our first layer to different colour(again blue instead of white)? Thank you for your video and knowledge :)
There’s no difference, background will always be the bottom but there’s no stopping you creating a new layer above that and using it for your background. Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching :)
If you place the picture in the reference window and then also place it on your canvas then colour pick from the reference window, then colour pick again from the same spot on your canvas it’s much easier to see the saturation issue. I don’t understand why it desaturates in the reference window but I really wish they would fix that because it makes the reference window less effective and that really shouldn’t be an issue.
that’s a good way to test, didn’t think of that. Really is quite surprising, I wonder if it’s related to a color profile being baked into the jpeg I imported
@@jaywalkerpictures Yeah possibly, I don't understand why they haven't addressed it though. It's mainly frustrating because I'll often decide I want to make a second companion piece and would like to reference colour from my first piece but my second piece would turn out duller. I eventually imported the first piece on to the canvas and tested and could see the difference immediately. Now I just import the original piece and make a pallet out of it instead of using the reference window for colour. But since its a reference window it would be nice to also be able to reference colour. lol

Thanks for the tip! It def beats manually selecting and erasing the white parts of the image. I was surprised how well it worked.

Haha yep, that would be nice 🙄 I think they’ve been busy with Procreate Dreams so bug fixing has fallen on the priority list
@@jaywalkerpictures Hopefully with 5.4 coming our way in the future they have fixed it and given the OG product some love.
