Definitely hyped up for this. Wonder boy was actually pretty fun. Loved the hand drawn art style and the retro switching mechanic of it. So this is pretty much the same.
I know this game is technically a spiritual successor to Wonder Boy, but I'm surprised to see what appear to be the exact same enemies from the Dragon's Curse remake that came out on Switch earlier. Specifically, the cloud wearing sunglasses and the flower with fangs. I would have thought that stuff wouldn't be able to appear in this game, considering the makers weren't allowed to call the game Wonder Boy. Then again, the copyright situation with Wonder Boy has always been bizarre. Hudson Soft got the rights to the original Wonder Boy gameplay, but not the title, characters, or story. And so Adventure Island was born. And then every Wonder Boy game from then on was nothing like the first. I think this will turn out to be a better game that the Dragon's Curse remake though. Dragon's Curse is about as good as it could possibly be on the Switch, but you can feel how old it is when you play it. It was quite short and the mechanics don't seem very fleshed out. It was good for its time, no doubt, but when a game like Hollow Knight can be had for $15, it's hard to justify paying $20 for such a short and relatively simple game. And the price doubles if you want a physical copy. I rented it and did enjoy it, but I'm very glad I didn't spend the money to buy it. Again, it's not the developers' fault. It's a fresh coat of paint on an old game. There's only so much they could do. But yeah, this has the potential to be worth the cost. Sometimes I balk at the idea of spending more than $20 on a 2D game, but if it's fun, it's fun. I sometimes play games just because it's something to do rather than because I'm really enjoying it, and that makes me wonder why I started playing games in the first place. But something about certain types of games really gets me invested. A friend of mine was trying to get me to play OverWatch tonight, but I decided to play more of The Messenger instead. I guess I just prefer the old style of games. The only thing that was wrong with those old games was that they could often be too obtuse (if the game were more open) or brutally difficult. And they were often quite short too. Not that you'd know that, because they were designed to keep you from finishing them. In any case, I love that we're living in a renaissance of old school gameplay with modern conveniences. That said, I'm torn on the pixel art aesthetic. I realize that some developers use it as a crutch, or even a gimmick, but I can't fault developers for wanting to go with a graphic style that lets them reduce the load on the artists by choosing such a style. Making super detailed HD sprites with fluid animation is incredibly time consuming, so if a game can come out faster and less expensive because it went with a pixel art style rather than trying to look like a cartoon, I'm okay with that. It's not nostalgia pandering if the game was made that way for a practical reason. Looking forward to seeing how other people respond to this game once it's out. $40 still seems really steep, but I've paid that for DS games that didn't look nearly as nice or have as big of a world.
I didn't know about this series until I got a PC Engine in 2009 or so. Confusing naming conventions aside I instantly fell in love with it. The exploration definitely doesn't go as far as as most MetroidVania-style games but that made it approachable for a newcomer to the genre and it makes the games easier to pick up casually. The audio and visual styles of the series definitely gives it a charm that can do a lot of heavy lifting for people used to deeper exploration and more challenging combat.
On one hand hearing how this runs and what it looks like is phenomenal and super exciting. On the other hand it reminds me what games have to look like to run at 60 frames on the switch and for that matter to run consistently it 720p without having to have adaptive resolution. I really want to love the switch but I know I'm going to have to wait for 2.0 aka the revision before that really happens.

I can't wait for this. I have been wanting this since I finished the Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap remaster. I couldn't believe how much I loved that game(The great art helped). It had some archaic game design in places but in some ways it was better then a lot of modern games. I actually liked it much better then Shovel Knight(Which I still think is a great game but just not for me so please don't hate me). I wouldn't necessarily recommend Wonder Boy to everyone. Like I said, it has some archaic game design along with a very steep difficulty jump near the beginning. Monster Boy however looks to modernize on what Wonder Boy was so should be good for people who love platformers. These previews are looking good!
Apart from the animals the game is basically Wonderboy 3 The Dragons Trap because some of those underwater enemies are the same. The pig with the eye patch exactly like the shop keeper but you can use him as a character, frogboy is lizard man
I'm definitely picking it up. Those Wonder Boy remakes are really doing a fantastic job and poking at my nostalgia as someone who played the originals on Master System to boot. Played Wonder Boy: the Dragons Trap (Remake / Remaster of wonderboy 3) a bunch when it came out on Switch and with this being a somewhat remake of Wonderboy 2 I've been looking forward to this. Also interesting that they did what Dragons Trap did and remixed the music of the original games, so a lot of the tunes playing in the background of your vid there sounded like tunes that were playing in Dragons Trap, just remixed / redone differently.
One good thing I can say is that every time I've felt stuck it turns out I just missed something obvious. I do find the ring menu helpful but annoying, in the sense that if I hold down the shoulder button for some time, I expect the ring menu to confirm my selection when I release the button, not have to tap it a second time. Also, several segments in the Volcano rely in performing transformations quickly.

I am currently playing this game of Xbox One, This game has been well worth the wait ever since it's announcement trailer. This is a true successor to the series and way better than Dotemu's Wonderboy 3 remake. The visuals are beautiful, and every new location, especially those that are in well lit areas, are stunning and you can tell so much time went into each drawing, each animation. The soundtrack features a variety of remixed tracks from previous wonderboy games, so you will recognise quite a few and see how well they've been done. Currently I am 50% through the map and can say there are plenty of puzzles to solve, areas to explore, as well as quests to do and collectibles add to the challenge also. The game is challenging but is not unforgiving, so why you may die at certain spots a few times, with a bit of thought, these challenges can be overcome and you can progress. Save points which act as checkpoints aren't to far between either. Honestly, if you're a fan of the series and love a good platformer this Is the best one to come out in years. I hope that FDG and Game Atelier will work on other sequels in this style to other Sega Games, just like Dotemu is currently with Streets of Rage 4.
I love this game and all of the wonder boy games on the master system. It is really such a fun game and it's so hard to put down. I picked it up first day and felt like it was a hidden gem because it came out with smash brothers. I did pick up both games that week. For my money monster boy spends more time being played. I am on my third replay. This game is better than most triple A titles. I would have paid more for this game. I live in Canada and paid $55 after taxes. Today my copy is worth $95. Some selling it for $120 or more. People on here complaining they have to pay $40. They took their time to develop an amazing game full of charm. Runs smoothly and no bugs from day one. Fantastic art and music. Great puzzles too. A must buy game with lots of nostalgia.

Honestly, there are few individuals on the scene that I feel make good "news" content. And he's one if them. But that is just my opinion. What has he lied about? And what dumb things does he say that warrants the effort of disliking a video? I'm asking honestly. Because honestly, I don't understand the concept of watching content of a person you dislike.
Just bought this on Stadia of all places. On sale and I had a $10 coupon code as a new member (free trial) for a total cost of $2.11 with tax. Not a bad deal! And you can play anything you bought on Stadia even after your subscription ends.
I will definitely buy this game in the future. Looks very promising! Hand drawn animations are my weakness and I'd like more studios to take the traditional route. (For example: Indivisible)
I agree about switching characters. At the very least if they would just not make the screen go dark on that menu and just make it a little pop up. or you hold that button to bring up the menu, but if you tap it, it's Cycles
I think that if they just had the transformation ring appear around your character in-environment instead of cutting away to the menu screen it would be an improvement.
I think The Messenger, Celeste and Hollow Knight are hard to beat for best of 2018, especially since those games are half the price. My hunch is that this game will go on sale like Dragon's Trap not long after release.
A game in which the main character transforms into different animals to gain access to different abilities. Watch out Shantae. Monster Boy wants your lunch money. I might check this out this December during the holidays
The game looks great~ The problem is that I've spent a lot already with the Holidays and Smash is coming a few days after. It would just get shelved for that.
The launch version of both the ps4 and switch copies come with a color manual and some stickers if you think the price is high. Looks better than Wonder Boy for me though.

at the beginning i played without the skillwheel...but if you had completed the game...you knew that it is almost impossible to complete the game without the wheel. in some later parts you have to do several midair char-changes...you cant perform in realtime with bumper-switch. maybe some koreans who played the game for the 3th+ time can...
to be clear, i would call myself a hardcore-gamer...but for a first or normal run through you HAVE to use the wheel, i got to the point that the wheel felt much more natural with increasing difficulty. no flame mate, but you criticize something about the game...that would perhaps block 70% of casual gamers in completing the game. we are talking about parts in which you have to press bumper-R 2 times, press Y, bumper-L 2 times, press Y again and A for the closing jump....all that input in under 1 second. sure its possible...but not for the average person! using the wheel deletes all the downtimes between bumpertimes, you can take as much time for your charackterpick and take your time about what to do next...

Is this part of the Wonder boy series?
Is this related to wonder boy?
The lion looks like Lion-o from thunder cats
snaaaaaaarf
nah he looks muuuch better
Absolutely right
Uploaded for 9 minutes and no dislikes. Trolls must be asleep.
The Missing Link Spoke too soon
enjoi0555 😂 These Trolls I swear. They must be subbed just to dislike.
The Missing Link They aren’t trolls, he just keeps saying dumb shit wether that be in the video they are disliking or in the past, he’s a liar too so he deserves every bit of hate and dislike
Brandon x22 Opinions are opinions. I think he's pretty fair and balanced most of the time.
And unlike most other youtubers, he has admitted when he was wrong in the past and apologized for it to making stand alone videos for it.
Brandon x22 - I do wish he’d stop yapping and just get on with the gameplay. But what does he lie about?
Just bought this on Stadia of all places. On sale and I had a $10 coupon code as a new member (free trial) for a total cost of $2.11 with tax. Not a bad deal! And you can play anything you bought on Stadia even after your subscription ends.
I LOVE this game! Thank you so much for covering it in depth!
Does this game have new game plus or any end game content by chance?
I will definitely buy this game in the future. Looks very promising!
Hand drawn animations are my weakness and I'd like more studios to take the traditional route. (For example: Indivisible)
I agree about switching characters. At the very least if they would just not make the screen go dark on that menu and just make it a little pop up. or you hold that button to bring up the menu, but if you tap it, it's Cycles
Brawlhala needs an Adventure mode like this
Looks like it plays a lot like maplestory how does it feel
I think that if they just had the transformation ring appear around your character in-environment instead of cutting away to the menu screen it would be an improvement.
I think The Messenger, Celeste and Hollow Knight are hard to beat for best of 2018, especially since those games are half the price. My hunch is that this game will go on sale like Dragon's Trap not long after release.
A game in which the main character transforms into different animals to gain access to different abilities.
Watch out Shantae.
Monster Boy wants your lunch money.
I might check this out this December during the holidays
This game looks really cool I'm a big fan of the Wonder boy/ Monster World series :)
this is basically Wonderboy all over again, which is great, because I really liked wonderboy.
The game looks great~ The problem is that I've spent a lot already with the Holidays and Smash is coming a few days after. It would just get shelved for that.
should I get this or tropical freeze
The game intro has such an 80s vibe to it. Really going to enjoy a game like this soon. Smash and Tales will be in the way but yeah I'm considering.
The launch version of both the ps4 and switch copies come with a color manual and some stickers if you think the price is high. Looks better than Wonder Boy for me though.
I have been following this since it was announced because I am such a fan of the Wonderboy/Monster World series. You didn't mention it in the video but were you aware or a fan of the WB/MW series Spawn Wave?
So glad I preordered it! Can’t wait for next week! :)
You seem really happy and excited!
Looks amazing. Definitely picking this one up. Thanks spawn for bringing it to our attention.
The previous Wonder Boy game, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, was a remake of Wonder Boy 3 on the Sega Master System. That game has fantastic hand-drawn graphics. This Wonder Boy game isn't as pretty as Dragon's Trap IMO, but this game looks promising!
I can't wait to pick this up. Have been super excited for it for a while now.
Wasn't this released like a year ago? It looks really similar to another platformer, I can't remember the name.
Sooooo, I should buy this for $10 right now on sale is what you’re saying?
How does it compare to Shantae because it looks very similar?
Tyler Aldrich Shantae is better
Good news for PlayStation 4 and 5 future owners but today the developers announced this "The developer just announced this today "FDG Entertainment has announced that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will be coming to PlayStation 5.
On PlayStation 5, the game will be upgraded with native 4K support while also running at 120FPS using HDMI 2.1 for some super-slick platforming action.
FDG Entertainment will also confirmed they be offering the next-gen version of the game as a free upgrade for all players who have already purchased the title. With 2D games such as Monster Boy already looking great on current-gen hardware, it's good to know that there's room to upgrade further with 120FPS support, although you will need a TV or monitor that supports such high frame rates to see the results!"
isn't out yet!
Great lets play Jon(SW) and super cool tee man :-). The Monster Boy and Wonder Boy series of games are quality and the hand drawn style of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom looks amazing. The price seems a little on the high side but the game is looking a ton of fun and looks amazing aswell guys.
I cant wait for this game. I hope that if this game does really well, it will mark a return for Wonder Boy and we can expect to start getting more games.
It's clearly going to do very well especially on Switch. It's another high quality 2D Action-Platformer from some talented indie developers.
@@kevinramirez3134 Yeah this game is gonna rock. Its the 7th installment in the Wonder Boy/ Monster World series.
@@kevinramirez3134 If you arent familiar with the series it goes:
Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Monster World)
Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap
Wonder Boy Monster Lair (Monster World II)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (Monster World III)
Monster World IV (Wonder Boy VI)
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (Wonder Boy VII/Monster World V)
Its great seeing a new Monster World game after all this time. I'm speechless
I will definitely be picking this game up!! I didn’t know it existed!! I just bought a used copy of dragon quest builders for the switch at GameStop for $40!! I will be returning it now and grabbing this game instead
Looks good. I was concerned it would play like the previous Master System upgrade but this actually has good gameplay.
ugghhh!! ii still havent finished the messenger, hollow Knight, and Wonder boy. Looks like i have another game to purchase for my back log. Is there a Physical version for Switch?
Why is this game more expensive than the previous entry of this series? I'm still going to get because I think the game looks awesome but can someone explain. Is it the graphics?
john187a Um i think you can figure that out on your own...
john187a it’s a lot longer since it’s more metroidvania thn wonderboy. Lot more customization for each animal you can control.
Brand new entry to the series and made by a small company which put alot of time and passion in it.
at the beginning i played without the skillwheel...but if you had completed the game...you knew that it is almost impossible to complete the game without the wheel. in some later parts you have to do several midair char-changes...you cant perform in realtime with bumper-switch. maybe some koreans who played the game for the 3th+ time can...
to be clear, i would call myself a hardcore-gamer...but for a first or normal run through you HAVE to use the wheel, i got to the point that the wheel felt much more natural with increasing difficulty. no flame mate, but you criticize something about the game...that would perhaps block 70% of casual gamers in completing the game. we are talking about parts in which you have to press bumper-R 2 times, press Y, bumper-L 2 times, press Y again and A for the closing jump....all that input in under 1 second. sure its possible...but not for the average person! using the wheel deletes all the downtimes between bumpertimes, you can take as much time for your charackterpick and take your time about what to do next...
Currently 60% off on Nintendo eShop till 5/19
Sold on the visuals alone, thanks for showing me this!
I preordered today. I’m glad to hear it’s good.
monster boy and the cursed kingdom is it hard or easy?
Really enjoying this game, from the visuals to the game play love it. Can't wait for my physical copy with that sweet manual
Ooo, this looks great!
Is it original, or is it a remake, like the other monster boy game?
I'm on the fence about buying it. I was about to buy Wondery Boy since its $10 on switch rn...should I just wait for this?
It’s looks like u press ZL&ZR to switch characters without going to the menu.. nice review
Looks fun I might check it out..thanks!
Switch has become like... the new king of side-scrollers
I'm thinking about getting this over smash since I'm on a budget
Este juego es una Obra de arte en cuanto a diseño artístico y gráficamente es muy precioso y colorido y se ve muy divertida su jugabilidad, hay se demuestra todo el cariño que le pusieron sus desarrolladores al crear esta joya de juego.
Looks like one of the more recent Shantae games, at least the art style + transformations
Looks fantastic. Crazy attention to detail. Definite buy from me
I saw this on the eShop and didn't think it was interesting to me. But will check it out after I'm done getting my Super Smash Bros Ultimate coming soon on December 7th
I'm getting it now. Loved Dragon's Trap on Game Gear.
A 2d wario like this would be amazing
This has a real Shantae feel to it, I'm sold.
Looks fun. I'll most likely pick it up
i just bought wonder boy the dragons trap for switch it was on sale, I'm liking it so far. Hopefully when i beat the game i can get the new one on sale cuz it does look like fun thanx for the video.

Koopa Troopa Poopa 10% off for pre-order on the switch

It looks like shantia and the pirate curse or half genie, those games were great.
