To be American is sharing the value of what this country stand behind. You could be from any back ground, any religious group----- America is not just being "White ' or Black. American is broadly define . If you share the value of honesty, hard work, fairness, equality, respect,..etc then I would think you're an American. We are' free' and have inalienable rights under God
@@seanking1775 bish, shut up. Context is everything. I said doing so is a very American thing to do. Doesn’t mean others don’t do it but clearly we the People are comfortable criticizing our leaders. Bish. Don’t eff with me again.
The thing that are missing is the understanding of what America was founded on and the challenges we have overcome and become better. They would appreciate what they have if they understood the history that grew us to this point. It's easily taken for granted without context....
Citizenship is enough to be considered ‘American’ but not culturally American, while some may argue that America is a hodgepodge of different cultures, that isn’t entirely true. There are different cultures within America, but there also is a distinct American culture. American culture stresses Christian values whether it is secular or not, this isn’t at all a bad thing; I myself am an agnostic but I still consider my values to align with Christianity at heart as would most Americans given they introspect. One last thing I’d like to say is that one can become fully American when they choose to assimilate into our culture, citizenship is one thing but being a true American is another 🇺🇸
American is a nationality (born on U.S soil or born outside the U.S to U.S citizen parents). It’s also a culture, a way of life. (American Football, Basketball, Baseball, rock, bluegrass, country music, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, blue jeans, hamburgers, hot dogs, soul food, individualism, 2nd Amendment, etc.)
America is not an ethnic group nor a religion it is a code one of freedom, liberty, justice, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness once you follow these truths you are American.
Immigrants and their children will always have a mixed-identity and a phase of confusion. They cannot let go of their ancestors' culture but they need the culture of the country they immigrated to, to survive. it's difficult but you have to live with it.
What it means to be an American for me is the religion of freedom, nation of immigrants, and freedom of speech. The author from pedro Corazon states “We are nation of immigrants, coming from humble ….,” This evidence support my claim because a lot of people have been coming from different places for their education and for some important reason and have had a good starting life in America. American is a save and a better place for us to live. Here in America people help each others and protect them. We have got our freedom since 1776 and now we are allowed to go anywhere and do anything we want. America is our country now and we have rights to do anything. In America, they education is high and we learn better in here because we are working hard for ourselves and we never give up on anything until it isn’t succeed. The author also says from pedro Corazon “We are the nation of immigrants, from the original native Americans, crossing the land bridge from Asia,...” This evidence supports my claim because we have came from different countries to America for their children and for themselves. America is a place where we could live safely and happily and we are free in America. This is the place where we could live safe and protect our family or to have a better education. The author states from Von Hipp “We are Americans. We have freedom. We have it because we fought and died for it.” This means that we have tried hard and hard for it and sacrificed themselves to save our countries and that trait of American is working hard. If we don't’ work hard we’ll never ever be successful. Long ago, America was not free, but then in july 4 1776 everything changed the soldiers had fight for us and saved our country. The soldiers who fought for us were very brave and it could even cost their lives, but they didn’t cared about their lives sacrificed themselves for America because they did it for themselves, for their family and for us. Their reason for fighting was “FREEDOM,” they wanted freedom, they wanted to be free.. We have worked hard and never gave up for it and that made us successful for working as a team together to make it more successful and win. In America, we have faced a lot of challenges and some don’t really know how to solve, but some do knows how they can face and solve it right away and that’s because they are trying and not giving up. “ … Whether that’s kids working hard in school so they attend college, parents working two jobs so they can afford it, or people working towards that American Dream, or even just to become wealthy.” Pedro Corazon wrote it and that means that every person have a dream in America and working hard can take us through our jobs. Everybody have a lot of things to face through and every person want to success and get to their dreams or to make it true.people have came from different countries, different religions and different cultures, but we are all the Although, Some people may not agree to what i said and may have different idea, We have freedom in America and we are safe in here because of the soldiers who worked hard, but taking care is the first part of being safe. For being an American for me is the religion of freedom, nation of immigrants, and freedom of speech. Here in American, the police and other people helps us with any problems.
Do you love freedom? Deep down in your heart. Would you be willing to make sacrifices to keep those freedoms. Do feel that every that everyone has a right to their opinion even if the are wrong? Do you feel that people should be free to live their lives as they see fit to as long as they are doing no harm to anyone else. If yes you probably are an American .
AMERICAN is someone who lives on the continent(s) of AMERICA. The word AMERICA comes from the Italian cartographer's name, AMERIGO VESPUCCI, which is a Latin name, so it makes more sense to refer to Latin Americans as AMERICANS than U.S. citizens as AMERICANS but the U.S. are also on America the continent(s).
Well for me it means being an eligible member of a Federally Recognized Native American Tribe in the United States of America. For everyone in the whole world besides people like me, it means something else.
It’s funny, I was born and raised in the United States, so legally I’m an American, but being an American should (and is) obviously much more than that. However, I’m only first generation. I still very much identify with the country of my parents (Jamaica) because I have generations of lineage there than I do here in the US. I still have family members (both paternal and maternal) that still live in Jamaica. My ancestors worked and cultivated that land, shaped its culture, and actively fought for its independence from colonial rule under Britain. Unlike my peers, I can’t tell you a story of some great-great-great-great whoever fighting in the Revolutionary or Civil War. I know America is touted as the land of immigrants and they do make immense contributions to American society and its economy. However, all of the historical labor, sacrifice, and ingenuity that made this country into what it is today we weren’t directly apart of. The only figure in American history I can fully resonate with as a Jamaican-American (that isn’t really taught in schools) is Marcus Garvey who played an active role in the Black Power Movement. What it means to be American will differ depending on whom you ask, it doesn’t seem as if America has a unified culture.
America is a continent. Plus, an American is from the Continent of America. The USA🇺🇲 is on the Continent of America, that's the *only* reason we're Americans!
@@CaptainAmerica001 You’re not wrong, it’s just become a colloquial term. "I dissent, therefore, from this legalization of racism. Racial discrimination in any form and in any degree has no justifiable part whatever in our democratic way of life. It is unattractive in any setting, but it is utterly revolting among a free people who have embraced the principles set forth in the Constitution of the United States. *All residents of this nation are kin in some way by blood or culture to a foreign land. Yet they are primarily and necessarily a part of the new and distinct civilization of the United States. They must, accordingly, be treated at all times as the heirs of the American experiment* and as entitled to all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution." ~Justice William Francis Murphy
If you really are American, the only identity you will have is as an American, and you're native language will be English. You can't be Afghan and American (completely different cultures). You can be an Afghan who is an American Citizen however.
Jake Kaywell to be American you must be white European. There’s no in between. A European born in Japan isn’t Japanese. A Japanese born in England isn’t English. You cannot be a duel citizen and be American.
dude race and nationality are two completely different things, you can have two asian parents but be born in america with exposure to both cultures, and you can still be asian american
Asians will simultaneously say the hyphenated part of thier identity is important but cry when people ask what the hyphenated part of their identity is.
In the beginning having freedom from tyrannical government was what it meant to be American. Now there are ten thousand governments in America. Each having similar doctrine but none free from their own doctrine but bound and oppressed in their own systems. And those who choose to be free are outcast by those who belong to one of the many cults. A Ukrainian man told me that I wasn't American. Because choose to operate in any way that I see fit and that I had a mind of my own. But this behavior is a widespread phenomenon in the United States.
To keep this short...When I look at the flag I see it for what it stands for (freedom and prosperity for all). America is a work in progress and we all have a hand in the direction we progress to. To me, being American, mean fighting for your rights and the rights of others. Sometimes bad people slither into positions of power who try to take our rights away and we need to fight for those rights..if your not willing to fight for them then you don't deserve them....your American if you part of that cause..where you don't only think about yourself but what's good for everyone and the greater good. #yourawesome:)

Native to where exactly? Siberia? Or did you forget that North and South America used to be covered with ice and uninhabitable. It was only when the ice started to melt that those places became hospitiale and ancient humans ventured into. Soooooo again native to where I ask? Humankind predates all of the different "tribes" of people across North and South America. So they to came from someplace other than the ice melt.
@@jrthmc29 This is a dumb argument. If Amerindians aren't native to the Americas because they came from Siberia, then Europeans aren't native to Europe because they came from the Middle East and Africa. By this logic, no homo sapien is native anywhere except Botswana. To be native means to have evolved and tied yourself and your people to the land over hundreds of generations.
Your blood must date back *to a Federally Recognized Native American Tribe* , not just any old assimilated Indigenous blood from Latino colonies. (Dime a dozen)
Wrong . America is not Immigration or Immigrants. Immigrants arrived here from Parts where people used to be brainwashed thats why today people have to ask “What does it mean to be an American ?”
Masondria McCurry America was created by WHITE EUROPEANS for WHITE EUROPEANS. This is clearly stated in the first Naturalization act of 1790. It has been that way until the Hart Cellar Act of 1965. Before Europeans came it was open space. We created it out of nothing. So called native Americans migrated from Asia and Mongolia. So how does that make them the original Americans?
@@masondriamccurry5884 wrong American is an ethnicity. We have our own culture and traditions. Anybody around the world can distinguish out an American accent or even the way Americans dress.

Dward Oval, you realise that Latin America =/= American The term American has come to be used to describe people from the United States exclusively, while Latin America is a region not including Brazil. it is not considered to be ‘America’ but rather they are addressed by the names of the countries. Also I’d like to just clarify this for people who may not know, but ‘Latin’ is not really what you should call Latino/Latinas/Hispanics because they aren’t the only people who would be considered ‘Latin’ there’s several countries which are: Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Romania. These can also be considered Latin since they all speak a language derived from Vulgar Latin. I’d also like to note that Portuguese and Brazilian people are NOT Latino/Latina/Hispanic the correct term would be ‘Luso’
If you're from a Latino colony you're not considered as having come from the Indigenous population of the Americas, you are considered as having come from a Latino colony.
These people psychologically are not Americans. I am an American. I was born here, my family came here from England. My mothers side arrived on the Mayflower. My fathers came as an indentured servant building a nobleman's home in Virginia when it was a colony. I also have Pocahontas on my family tree. My culture and family history are intertwined and American. My ancestors fought in Dunmore's war, the revolutionary war, the civil war, WW1, WW2, Korea. I grew up 1960s and 70s learning traditions that are American. All of my friends and neighbors were also American. These people do not have this cultural anchor and in my opinion are never going to identify as Americans. It would be like me immigrating to Cuba or Somalia. I would always be the American that lives there. That's why America is a fractured mess with no identity. The country now has no unity of culture. Its a melting pot all just living here and taking advantage of the hard fought freedoms of my and other peoples ancestors died for. People who say it was meant to be this way are wrong. The founders didn't intend or even consider this future.
All Nations on Earth are defined by race and ethnicity. The 1828 Webster's Dictionary defined an American as descendants of Europeans born in America." Everyone else are not Americans because they are not part of the heritage racial and ethnic identity of this country. These people are citizens of the State. All Americans are citizens of the United States but not all citizens of the United States are Americans. The United States and America are two different things. One is a racial and ethnic identity; the other is a legal relationship.
You're confusing nationality with location. An American is born in the United States of America. Or has become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. if you were born in Brazil which is in South America you are not an American you're a Brazilian. Same applies to Hondurans they're born in Honduras. Peruvians that are born in Peru. your logic everyone born on Asia would be Asian in this is simply not the case. There's 50 sovereign Nations on the continent of Asia some of which are India, Russia China,Afghanistan,Iran,Iraq, Kuwait etc. Make sence now? People born in South or Central America are not Americans. However guess what people born in Guam as well as Puerto Rico they are American

American is to be part of the world... we are really a stone soup pot of PEOPLE... have come here from many places and some people were brought here for sinister reasons but have remained here therefore we are the entire world in all the Americas and we bring our diverse roots in cultures and we bring them together. We should celebrate our differences it's what makes each one of us unique and that's the best part of being in the America's because there are so many people from so many places here. There’s a difference being an American citizen, with a piece of paper stating your nationality as “USA” and being American in terms of being a Yank culturally; which is being of the founding stock of modern America and encompassing values and traditions as such. Forget about religion, it’s a separation of church and state for a reason....
@Percival Hans Indeed, and plainly Maryland and bits of Pennsylvania were a significant Catholic colony. Answering the OP, the reason for the supposed "separation of church and state" is the recognition of Christian diversity, preventing the establishment of a State church of the sorts in NW Europe, nothing more.
@@dreamcore The founding stock were descendants of Puritan and Quaker utopians. Religiosity has never truly died down in American society. In America there is no such thing as a minority. Any minority statuses should be abolished. To be American it is not an ethnicity, it's not belief, not a dream, it's much more than just the sum of its parts.
That's not true at all. America was created for White Europeans. That changed in 1965 under the guise of "skilled labor" and all we got were 30,000,000 Mexicans. You're fooling yourself if you believe America is better off. "The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, also known as the Hart-Celler Act, abolished an earlier quota system based on national origin and established a new immigration policy based on reuniting immigrant families and attracting skilled labor to the United States."
Barron Trump knows what's up. America was always for White Europeans of good moral standing. But we denigrated ourselves in the pursuit of profit. To be American is to have ancestors who fought in the war to create America, or at least helped settle the nation, or AT THE VERY LEAST comes from the same genetic and cultural stock as the founding Americans and fully takes on the American identity. Otherwise, you are just a LARPer. Same way an American would be LARPing if he said he was Chinese because he lived in China and the government gave him a piece of paper saying he's Chinese.

One last thing I’d like to say is that one can become fully American when they choose to assimilate into our culture, citizenship is one thing but being a true American is another 🇺🇸
>he fell for the melting pot meme
American is a nationality (born on U.S soil or born outside the U.S to U.S citizen parents).
It’s also a culture, a way of life. (American Football, Basketball, Baseball, rock, bluegrass, country music, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, blue jeans, hamburgers, hot dogs, soul food, individualism, 2nd Amendment, etc.)
Very simple!!!
Being an American means you're from the Continent of America 🌎.
Wonder who said America was just "White" lol 😂
I’m born and raised as an American so I call myself as an American!
Everybody have a lot of things to face through and every person want to success and get to their dreams or to make it true.people have came from different countries, different religions and different cultures, but we are all the
Although, Some people may not agree to what i said and may have different idea, We have freedom in America and we are safe in here because of the soldiers who worked hard, but taking care is the first part of being safe. For being an American for me is the religion of freedom, nation of immigrants, and freedom of speech. Here in American, the police and other people helps us with any problems.
i took it from my essay hahahahsah
Do you love freedom? Deep down in your heart. Would you be willing to make sacrifices to keep those freedoms. Do feel that every that everyone has a right to their opinion even if the are wrong? Do you feel that people should be free to live their lives as they see fit to as long as they are doing no harm to anyone else. If yes you probably are an American .
Bravo. Very well thought out. Very well said. From one American to another let me say thank you.
"American" means anything/anyone from the Continent of America.

In the beginning having freedom from tyrannical government was what it meant to be American. Now there are ten thousand governments in America. Sometimes bad people slither into positions of power who try to take our rights away and we need to fight for those rights..if your not willing to fight for them then you don't deserve them....your American if you part of that cause..where you don't only think about yourself but what's good for everyone and the greater good.

In America there is no such thing as a minority. Any minority statuses should be abolished. Everyone is just American, there is no Chinese-American, no African-American, no Mexican-American, etc. All the world's people are American. To be American it is not an ethnicity, it's not belief, not a dream, it's much more than just the sum of its parts.
Thomas Forster im african american
Am I a troll? White Eruopeans of good moral standing?. Right because mass genocide of an indigenous or any people is always an acceptable solution to ones "problems".
hi
America is a continent not a country
Racist talking point. 😂
Hyphens aren't important. That's the point of America.. You're here, work hard, follow the law and help your community. Welcome!

No I said my father was a u.s. soldier with a purple heart and he told me that you. Live and let live and you be nice to other Americans and you celebrate the 4th of July but then Americans teach me that your suppose to be a puppet to society your never suppose to have an opinion and that only other Americans can decide what is American behavior I thought your an American if you obey the constitution of America and if you were born sence when did other Americans get to decide what is American behavior
Americans will judge you
Just like everyone else everybody judges.
They judge in Europe too, they judge everywhere. There are people everywhere that don’t judge.
@@jamesdavid1185 Fortunately, Americans are explicit with their judgement. Europeans are often more subtle about it. lol
American is not a race
actually it is
You're right it's not a race, but it's an identity.
Robert Johnson yes, if you’re Indigenous, which you’re not with that European name......
You're right it is not a race it's a Nationality.
Actually it is, it just only applies to the Tribes.
What I think that people around the world should be welcomed to the United States of America!!!
@Ursus Americanus I'm meaning that Any kind of people from all over the world are welcomed and they would have rights for any race. All of the other people around the world are the same
As long as they do it legally and not cross the border illegally.
We don't need any more people. We're already full.
@@brandoncooney9047 While we objectively don't need any more people, we have plenty of physical space to house at least 10 times our current population. Just take a drive through the countryside to see what I mean. This land is sparsely populated outside of urban centers.
Well yes but they should respect who was here before them on multiple levels: Indigenous Tribes, Founding fathers, immigrants of eras past, and so on.
