Home Improvement: Altering An Existing Kitchen Cabinet To Hold A Dishwasher

  • My wife had wanted a dishwasher for a long time. When the house was built, a hot water hookup and a separate electrical outlet for a dishwasher were added. For some reason, instead of adding a dishwasher under the counter, a kitchen cabinet was put in. After getting quite a few estimates, and doing some research, I decided to cut out the cabinet and install the dishwasher myself. I made a video of it. It took me two days from start to finish. If it hadn't been my first time, I probably could have done it a little bit faster. A lot of time was spent going back and forth to the hardware store. I saved at least a couple thousand dollars by doing this myself.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that can't find a contractor who will modify a cabinet to accommodate a dishwasher! Thank you for your share, doesn't look that complicated, so I'm ready to tackle it myself!

It wasn't all that complicated. It was the thought of potentially destroying the cabinet and the dishwasher not working out that kept me from attempting it, for quite a while. In the end, I wish I would have done it much sooner! I hope you have a nice new dishwasher installed in your kitchen soon.

Great work! We have the dishwasher from about 2 weeks now, and my fiance has been brushing it off. I'm doing it myself this weekend. Thanks for the video and wish me luck. lol

This is amazing work. It gives me the confidence to do this job. The difficult part of it is to cut the cabinet. Mine is a little better because the dishwasher location is not at the end of the counter top, so that i have good support from the two sides

We couldn't find someone who would make the cabinet for our dishwasher. We watched your video several times and then we did the work ourselves. The cabinet work we did turned out great. You showed every step, and each step you showed worked well. Thank you, as yours was the only video on RUclips that showed us what we needed to know to complete this project ourselves.

I am glad it worked for you! I am happy to have helped someone in a similar predicament. It took me a long time to get up the courage to attempt this because I was afraid of destroying the existing cabinet and not getting the dishwasher to function. It took awhile to proceed but it turned out to be really easy! Thanks for your kind comments.

There's an important story to be told on how dramatic the price difference of hiring someone vs doing it yourself is.

OK, I think I’ve got enough pointers from you. I can do it myself as well. Thank you for sharing this video.

Andrew do you think the 2x4 supports are really necessary. The cabinet width is only 27 inches and it has both the left right and rear sides of cabinet for support ? I may skip that part.

    • @andrewhikesandclimbs5470
      @andrewhikesandclimbs5470  2 месяца назад

I didn't want to take any chances, so I added the 2x4s. I believe the sides of my cabinets to be made out of only 3/8-inch plywood and I took out the bottom of the cabinet weakening the frame even more. With the added support, I am pretty sure I could stand on my countertop now. If you are confident that your cabinet will hold without it, you might as well skip the extra support. I hope you end up with a new dishwasher however you choose to do it.

I’ll secure mine at the bottom with some angle brackets I think. I asked only because I won’t have room for the 2x4’s. Maybe I can squeeze a 1x4 in tho.

@@davechampion3495 Another thing I took into consideration was that the cabinet I took apart was on the end, had it been located between two other cabinets I probably wouldn't have needed to worry about it being supported. Brackets or 1x4s would probably work. I uploaded this video because I thought it might really help someone in a similar situation. I didn't intend it to be a perfect template. I am sure everyone has a slightly different arrangement. Good luck on your project!

Great job I’m looking to do the exact same thing soon my cabinets are similar in style! Where did you pick up the wood to fill in the edges to bring the opening close to 24 inches?

Im doing this in my kitchen looks like i want to record the whole thing since my cabinet is 20 inch only so i need to extend the cabinet depth, add plumbing to my basement since im 7ft away from the sink pipeline then add outlet. Great video!

Sounds like a much more complex problem then I had to deal with. Good luck! I do think I remember seeing extended drain hoses and water supply lines for dishwashers, you may be able to get by without adding new plumbing.

@@andrewhikesandclimbs5470yep more complicated since the one close to my sink can allow 18inches but i prefer 24 inches, im not sure if its ok to connect to my food grinder. Since i need to drill the drain tube to basement ceiling area then connect upward to food grinder. It might not flow correctly but gravity. It old cabinet undersize no dishwasher since 1970

I got an oak 1x2" at Lowes and cut two pieces to the proper height with a chop saw. The opening was 27" wide and (1x2" ) are really 1.5 " wide. Have fun!
