- One of the best 40 mile hikes in the USA. Maybe the best. The Timberline Trail just outside of Portland, Oregon did not disappoint. The trail is roughly 40 miles long around Mt Hood. We did the hike in 2 days and 1 night and I was blown away with just how beautiful the hike was. In this video its day 1 and we hike roughly 19 miles from the Timberline Lodge to our campsite in a meadow close to Elk Cove.

The Timberline is one of my all time favorites. The burnt area is spectacular in fall, when the white trees contrast with the red and gold foliage. Glad to see I’m not the only person that remarks OMG! How beautiful! every 50 feet ;)
That was my first backpacking trip as a teen over 40 years ago, in my 60's now. Been hiking and camping ever since. I'm just now getting back into backpacking. I can't wait to do this one again!
Anyone hiking clockwise, when heading up the long ridge (in this video) directly toward the mountain, near the top, after a couple of shortish switchbacks, look for an unmarked trail to your right; It's the unofficial connecting section of the McNeil 'loop'. It gets a bit steep and a tad technical but you can make it up with moderate packs. You end up at McNeil shelter and can sit on some rocks perched high above the Muddy Fork which you crossed earlier. The view to your left up at the mountain and directly across to Yocum Ridge is my favorite spot on the mountain loop. Complete the McNeil loop on the official trail through some gorgeous subalpine terrain. Descend a bit and then back on the Timberline trail.
I did this solo as the first of my multi night backpack trips...incredible experience I will never forget. I'm so glad you go to as well.
Thanks for showcasing one of the great Northwest hikes!!! We love it here
Its so beautiful!
Glad you made it out here, Will. Timberline Trail is one of my favorites - have done it several times now. The trail was officially closed for about 20 years starting in 1996 because a section of trail was washed out in a flood and no funds were allocated to restoring it. So glad they got it fixed up a couple of years ago. Ramona Falls is one of my favorite spots anywhere.
Love your videos. Booked hiking destinations and buying Zpacks gear
due to you being so inspiring and positive.
Welcome to Oregon. Glad you three could make it to hike such a great trail. Have followed you (Will) on RUclips a lot.
I have hiked much of the trails around Mt. Hood. I also have the duplex and Arc Haul. Plus many other items from Zpacks.
It sounds like you guys were happy with the hike. Thanks for coming to Oregon.
It was a beautiful trail indeed! So much variety for just a 40 mile trail. Hard to beat! We hope you are loving the gear. Happy Hiking! ✌️
Cool video , beautiful and enjoying the waterfalls.
The waterfalls were amazing!
The forest and lushness is so beautiful..oregon blows me away every time i see an awesome video like this..good stuff dude
I'm an hour away from there, i'm about to check out that trail! It looks beautiful! I need to start getting ready for the AT next year :)
Will Red Beard, Can't wait for the second segment. I didn't think you could trump the Utah hike, but I it might just be possible. Your videos are lovely. Thanks
Thanks! I’m gonna hopefully get the second video finished up today.
What a spectacular hike! Added to my list. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure! It’s a great one 👍
I do all my hiking in New
England. I am impressed with the well groomed trails, almost like a dirt road, that's rare in rocky New England.
its really old
My stomping grounds. Love it up there!
Looks like a good one to add to the list.
Great video as always. Looking forward to seeing how your day 2 went!
Just loving the views. That shot of Mt Hood and the tent set up needs to be forwarded to the marketing dept. That shot will sell baby sell! Beg my pard for that outburst.
looks like some awesome hiking, and those views are amazing.
I live near Salem. Nothing but field burning, ff fire smoke and dust from plowing and zero rain. I'd love to hike this someday.
wow, awesome scenery !
Hi from Holland, awesome footage thanks for sharing
Damn Will, that place is spectacular! I'mma have to get out there soon and walk that trail! Lookin' forward to the rest of the series.
Glad you took me up on the paradise loop rec. Awesome footage!
Emmanuel Vincent thanks again for the recommendation! It was definitely worth the side trip just like you said. 🙌
@@RedBeard0924 you're welcome dude!
Man thanks for the views looks like a nice Trail.. 20 miles a day and that trail is pretty good.... I think I would have made it a 3 Day 2 night hike... nice to have a lot of water
Hey Redbeard, you still working with zPacks? Love your videos!
👍🏻
not bad
That’s a meadow you’re camping in
What time of year did you guys do this in?
What month did you do this
Are mountain bikes allowed on this trail??
No mountain bikes allowed. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they did have mountain bike specific trails somewhere in the area.
Just curious why you are wearing your hood in a number of shots but talking about the heat? Testing?
That’s a good question. The shirt I’m wearing is actually designed for warm weather and sun protection. It’s lightweight, extremely breathable and wicks sweat away. A hood doesn’t necessarily mean cold weather clothing now a days. ✌️
👍👍😀
Did that smoke smell like weed?
