I didn't expect to enjoy this combo as much as I do! Do you think you could make such a wide lens work for your day to day shooting?
Out of all the f1.8 LUMIX primes, I definitely used the 18mm the most on the S9, it’s such a great combo for content creation.
Josh can you possibly do a 28-200 vs 24-105 now the we have the S9 & the S5 II ? Your prior video on the 24-105 has been really helpful, I’m in the market for a Dual Purpose lens for Travel and as a Candid Lens for Events.
Would be great to hear your take on this, your videos on the Sigma 16-28, Sigma 28-70 have been the absolute best. 🔥
The 18mm is the best S prime for sure, I still think they’re too big for this body. Slap on an s5ii and it feels great in the hand.
The 35mm f1.8 is the lightest of the set, and it feels pretty good on the camera with the grip. I agree, though; they need to make tiny pancake primes to match this camera.
It was insane that the compact Zoom wasn't ready in time. again further proving my point that this camera wasn't ready to be announced yet and the GH7 should have been what we saw in Japan
The weight is what saves it really, since all the 1.8 primes are pretty lightweight! Even if they made an F2/F2.8 version that was smaller, that would be ideal. 20mm F2.8 would be great
The 18mm is such a fire lens and I think it's a great match for the S9! I hope they release some tiny small form factor lenses as that might persuade me to pick up the S9 at some point.
I’m gonna try and tell Lumix to get you an S5iiX
You do realise Sigma makes compact lenses right
@@Silverwarhawk I have seen some, never used any
@@Silverwarhawk our definition of compact is not the same - the FF sigma contemporaries are bigger than the S primes lol
@@sloppysteaksThe 45, 50, 65, and 90 are not. They are heavier but not by much. But they are not bigger. The specs that show on Adorama show them being smaller. Especially the 45 2.8 and 90mm 2.8.
Top video mate. Think the new 18-40mm is going to killer for the same reasons as this too and make it even more versatile for most things
Can't wait for that lens to be released, that's going to power up the S9 I think!
I wonder how the Sigma 18-50 would actually scale with the S9.
Great video mate
Thank you! Appreciate you
Have you tried putting the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN on it?
I have! It works great, just a little bit big IMO
First 👀
The S9 made me pick up so many new lenses! Some vintage, others new… my favourite so far is the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 👌
M-mount f1.5?
@@GrainOnTheGo Yes! That’s the one 📸👊🏻
Oh sweet! I need to try that out!
interesting, any way i can reach out for more photos examples and what the setup looks like?
Imho a great lens would be the Canon 40mm F2.8. Even with the MC-21, you’d be looking at a very compact kit.
Great idea, didn't even think of adapting!
Aaah using the e-stabilisation and apsc crops to make one lens work for you... clever!
Crop modes are my friend! All about perspective🤣
that's similar to why my stick and leave it lens on my gh6 was the 9mm panaleica. this makes a lot of sense having the 18mm on the s9!
still a little front heavy but i guess that's a compromise 😅
You'd be surprised, it's very well balanced. The 1.8 Primes aren't heavy by any means, in fact they're lighter than some of the I-Series lenses, so I find the weight distro to be pretty good!
I think the Sigma L 45mm f2.8 should have been the default kit lens for the S9 - it is way more compact than any of the Panasonic primes, and has autofocus and an aperture dial. Low light shooting does not need really wide apertures anymore for FF, and you get plenty of shallow dof at f2.8 at this focal length, too.
It actually came free with pre-orders of the S5, so seems not an issue of using a Sigma lens on a Panasonic giveaway. The free 26mm f8 manual focus, fixed aperture lens with no filter threads, is absurd. And the 18mm f1.8 is really too big for the S9.
Yes, I am ignoring vlogging headshot videos.
I share these opinions 👌
I've got a whole video coming out on the I Series primes, including the 45mm F2.8 paired with the S9. I agree, I think they're amazing for this body :)
Oh at last someone who has brain. You will not have any discount on S9, if you buy it with a Sigma lens. You must buy a Panasonic lens. This 18mm however great it is, no way I'd buy it for the S9. Sigma 17mmf4 is the lens for the S9 when you need that crazy wide FoV.
Bro, love your Lumix content and it made my buy S52x. I was just hoping if you could make a video about future of Panasonic/Lumix as some sources are claiming that they might close the camera business and so many people have invested in the new line of S52 cameras. Hoping if you could make a video around this. Cheers!
Hey Josh, I've been wanting to buy a Hybrid FF Camera for a while now. I can currently buy the first S5 new for just under 1000€ (~850£). Would you recommend it to me, or do you think I should save up for the S5II? Thanks
Depends on your needs, the first S5 was already a beast at both photos and videos, if you don't need 6k or don't need to do long interviews, you're golden with a s5 (the autofocus while not being as reliable as the s5ii was still very good for a contrast based af). If you were considering the s5ii you could imagine yourself buying a more premium lens, because today the optics make all the difference, not so much the camera bodies
@@Robin.F96Thank you for the response, personally I don't "need" 6K, and I want a hybrid camera because I plan to expand my creativity (for example: right now I am stuck with 8 bit), but the picture image quality is also very important for me. Even though there a no huge changes, the S5II allows the handheld 96 MP mode, which I'd really appreciate. I prefere a bit more then 24 MP but I still want the hybrid compromise, the great 10 bit video quality and the great noise performance. Also the S5II is my absolute budget limit. Right now the price difference between the S5 (1000€) und S5II (1700€) is 700€ (it's discounted). I am also not ready to buy very expensive lenses, although I know that the lenses are prior. To sum it up, I just want to avoid switching to the S5II after 2 or 3 years due to dissatisfaction with the S5.
I love my Lumix 18mm 1.8. It's worth every penny. I'm considering the Sigma 17mm f4 as a travel lens but waiting to see the Lumix 18-40mm.
I was very interested in the S9, then the GH7 was released. I began to think what was it I wanted from my next video product. It is stabilized footage on the go. So a S10 like a stripped down GH7, I'd be happy with 1080 100fps to be honest for all the social media work I do ( all vertical ). with that s zoom from 20 to 40 at a minimum of F4 (full frame equivalent). I'd love that camera 😊 all in £1500 🔥
The GH7 poses a lot of really good questions I think. It's such a capable video camera, and If I was already invested deeply into M43 then it'd be an absolute no brainer!
@@JoshCameron Josh - is the stabilization on the S9 helpful for small movements around products etc, I do a lot of food and drink work on location.
I would put the Lumix 70-200 mm F2.8 S Pro Lens 9n it and call it a day.
Perfect combo, well balanced and pocketable!
The deal routes me to UK page, is this deal only for UK viewers?
Does the s5ii have the crop zoom function?
Crop Zoom has only been introduced to the S9 so far, but hoping it makes its way to the other FF cameras :)
great info. how about sigma 28-70 f2.8 ? or the new 18-40 kit lens plus 24 mm f1.8 for B roll
All would be great options!
Excellent images! Lumix needs to come out with a series of 2.8/3.5 primes that are about half the size of their 1.8’s like what Canon, Nikon, and Sony have proved. Hell, Sigma’s 17mm f4 might be the best autofocusing compact wide angle option for L-mount
Who knows what they have in mind, but I do totally agree. I think it would be great to see some more compact primes to go with the S9 :)
I use the 18mm F1.8 all the time on my S5II!
It's such a great lens!
Sigmas 17/4, 24/3.5 & 45/2.8 are more compact
I am pretty sure he knows.
Yeah but worse quality
@@harryvlogs7833why? Im considering to buy sigma i series..
I ordered the 24mm f3.5(used) in preparation for the arrival of my S9, but was disappointed with the AF on my S5ii, so much I returned it. I ordered the 45mm, hopefully it’s better, as I do believe they are ideal for the S9s user experience
The 90mm is also very compact!
Would love to see a video around Lumix S9 with the Sigma 28-70 2.8 lens and the Lumix 28-200 lens
The 28-200 is an amazing lens for this body, I was so close to choosing that one as my 'one and done', but I felt like the 18mm leant itself more towards the target user for this camera :)
@@JoshCameron That's fair. I haven't really used the 18 much, since I don't vlog. I use the S1 for my bread and butter work, but the S9 with a 28-200 would be my perfect travel setup (or 28-70 if i want to get some bokeh). Effectively 'upgrading' from current my travel setup - Fuji XT3 with 18-135 :)
That lens has been living on my camera and occasionally the 28-200mm
28-200 is such a good lens with the S9!
No mention of the new prime? The amazing F8? Still waiting for your video on it. The 24 sensor doesn’t allow for too much cropping outside of social media posts. I am preferring the small sigma lenses with my S series cameras but I am more photo centric
My video will come out, eventually🤣
no compact lens? only the 26mm f8?? sigma sleep or what?
1:04 "I was actually so surprise at how useful it is for that particular use case" yeah that's what they made the S9 for.
Word
I really thing one of Sigma i Series are better. The 35m or 45mm.
how about samyang lens ?
I haven't been in touch with Samyang yet, but It's exciting to see that they're now making L-Mount lenses :)
link doesnt seem to work. i go to the home page
Ah okay thanks for letting me know, I'll try to get that fixed asap!
as much as I love the s series of lenses they're kinda big for this body. I really want someone try to make it a leica q6 alternative with a similar lens and foot print. I think the $6000 Leica look is absolute bs, and I'd rather have a full frame point shoot with my own look.
I know you represent LUMIX. But that lens is way too expensive for that camera for what it can provide. If you need auto focus there is the significantly less expensive and more stylish Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN lens. The tiny 26mm manual focus lens should have such a deep range of focus you can set it and forget it if you are shooting close up selfie stuff or farther away street photography. If you are going to use a longer lens, make sure it can take advantage of that full frame sensor to achieve some bokeh, a fast 50mm or something like that. Maybe even something vintage with an adapter. The LUMIX 50mm f1.8 or 85mm 1.8 are both excellent too.
Those are not wide enoug. 18mm is perfect
Why would creatives want a FF camera to shoot videos for YT, Instagram, etc??? Total overkill when the maximum requirement for these apps is less than 2 MP. All they need is a GoPro or their mobile phone with all the "killer apps" that the S9 is claimed to have (Perhaps Panasonic should sell the software for iPhone and Android instead). The S9 has a 15 minute video shooting limit, for gawd's sake. Imagine a RUclipsr chatting away on a camera and it suddenly stops. Having to wait till it cools down and restart will be a killer for an influencer. A FF sensor has bad rolling shutter effect, so the best sensor is actually a M4/3 sensor for influencers. The S9 has no mechanical shutter, and that severely limits it's still photographic possibilities with artificial lighting.
Panasonic did not explain why there is no hot shoe for electronic flash, and this camera does not support electronic flash at all (correct me if I am wrong). The reason is simple -- no mechanical shutter therefore very limited electronic flash capability.
It is therefore a camera that is unsuitable for influencers and stills photography (too small for the huge FF lenses, no EVF, no mechanical shutter, etc). In conclusion, a still born camera. For diehard Panasonic fanboys, there is a positive. Wait for 6 months before buying and you can pick one up for less than half price!
