This movie brought back so many childhood memories. I am so damn grateful that the people who made this film actually cared about this franchise. pure fun and love
My favorite part was hands down the GameCube ringtone on Luigi’s phone. So perfectly placed, and it just goes with all the other subtle nods throughout the entire movie that show how much time they put into every part of this whole film.
So I knew there were a lot of easter eggs but my gosh, I maybe noticed 10% of all of these. The people who made this movie did the Mario universe well. A lot of love and attention was paid and I love to see it. Thank you illumination!
this movie was a dream for mario/nintendo fans like myself. it was full of nostalgia. the soundtrack was mesmerizing to me, hearing all the songs from the games, even in the background from some scenes! it was beautiful. the cast was perfect and didn’t disappoint. the story was fun, lighthearted, yet serious when it needed to be. it was a true delight to watch on the big screen (even wearing a mario cap!!) loved this breakdown of the details and easter eggs found in the movie. i hope that there is a possibility of sequels and to even introduce more of our beloved characters in the franchise 🩵
*MISSED DETAIL* At family dinner, Luigi goes for the salad first, but it's taken away from him. In a traditional Italian dinner, the salad comes after the main course.
You missed the funny nod at the tanooki suit being called a bear suit by Luigi. back in the 90's everyone used to always mistakenly call the raccoon suit a bear suit because it looked more like a bear in the earlier games(even though it was meant to be a raccoon). When Mario sees luigi again after rescuing him in the film, luigi pulls on the ears and says "Mario, why are you dressed like a bear?"
That's not what makes it work though, it's reinserting the cart into the console that gives the pins on the game another chance to align properly with the connector. You can get the same effect by wiggling the game side to side a little while it's pressed down and then hitting the reset button. Cleaning the game pins with a q-tip and isopropyl is what actually fixes most of the problems though!
@@SuperEd86 I believe sometimes it took more tries, not to align the pins, but to make contact and scrape oxidation off of the pins in order to make a strong connection. Cleaning the pins with iso cleans off the oxidation of the metal connectors as well.
We took our 2 kids (6 years and 3 yrs) to a kid-friendly cinema (with beanbags chairs and a slide!) to watch this...but I swear, I laughed and cheered harder than any kid in the cinema. I loved this movie!
I dont understand why critics exist in 2023. I've never once in my life cared about whether or not someone else liked a movie and used it to base my own opinion of the movie.
I'm 42 & haven't played a Super Mario game since the original. My son is 6 & has dang near every Mario game in existance for his Switch. We BOTH loved this movie. We've been singing "Peaches" since we walked out the theater.😂 What I enjoyed most was the mix of settings. My son had to explain most of them to me, but it was cool seeing how excited he was to see the different places.
I really felt like a kid watching this movie, had a smile on my face from ear to ear throughout the whole movie. I think I enjoyed it more than my son, and he loved it.
There was SO MUCH that I missed, thank you for this breakdown! Also, I'd argue that Super Mario Bros. 2 was the first game where Princess Peach could float (the sprites make it hard to tell if she's using her dress to do so, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that's how she's able to float)
Maaaan! When you see all the actual little details pointed out, just goes to show you how thoughtful Nintendo & Illumination were and how much love and time they put into this! So much respect! The sequel is probably going to make over $1 Billion!
Came here to say that was the most obvious Easter egg to me for the rainbow road scene - I can’t recall if they had to turn left off the course like in N64 but I was waiting for that to happen in the movie!!!
To add to the Captain Toad theory: For those who didn’t notice, the music that plays when Mario first encounters Toad is the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker theme!
18:46 if you watched this scene very closely you can see that there is a sad lone Bob omb sitting next to some koopas and once he sees King Bob Omb he gets excited and sits up to see him. It’s so wholesome
1 thing you missed Anna. When Mario's alarm at the end of the movie goes off, they start playing Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. This song appeared at the start of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which also starred Chris Pratt. I believe King Bob-omb and King Boo were also accompanied by Petey Piranha Plant and a giant Sledge Brother at the wedding. All of these have been bosses on Mario Party.
I really hope they build up to a smash bros movie in the future! I think that would be awesome after seeing how cool the DK v Mario scene was in this movie.
I love everything about this movie, the details, the cast, the animation, literally everything! It's made so incredibly well and is way better than I expected.
Another detail that people might've missed is that Mario and Luigi's father's character design in the movie is based on Talon from Zelda, which was inspired from Mario himself.
Wow I knew the movie had a lot of game references but I didn’t know it was this much. The directors really did their homework for this movie. Perfection
It helps that Shigeru Miyamoto was one of the producers of the film, and there was a TON of people from Nintendo helping to create the movie, including Koji Kondo which explains how so many different songs made it in the movie.
Something you could also infer about the Level 1-2 Easter egg: That’s the level with the secret warp room at the end of it. You have to break some of the bricks at the top of the level, jump on top of them, and then run past the proper level exit pipe to reach the pipes that will take you to worlds 2, 3 or 4. Similarly, the Bros break through a brick wall to reach the room with the magical green pipe, which then warps them to the Magical Nintendo world.
The way the protagonists put mini bowser in a glass jar could be a double reference to the endings of Super Mario Galaxy 2, where Bowser became tiny, and Super Mario 3D World, where Bowser was trapped in a jar.
One detail that I think a lot of people have missed was when Luigi and Bowser meet. One of the many Bowser statures in his throne room or whatever resembles a pose he does on one of his amiibos. Not sure if it's his smash one or classic one but the positions are accurate
I feel like it's inevitable, after the success of this one. Now that it's been proven that it IS, in fact, possible to do a video game adaptation that satisfies longtime fans and is still entertaining to the average moviegoer. Tone would be an issue, though. This movie was super meta and self-referential (which was great for fans), but I don't think a Zelda movie would be able to pull that off without seeming too pander-y. It could still have some meta humor, but the tone overall would have to take itself a bit more seriously, I think.
Hey friends, I'm a bit late to the party, but I just have to say this is why I love these videos! There's so much more than I even realized. My absolute favorite part about the movie is Mario's motivation. The entire time, the only thing he wanted was to save his brother. Even after he met Peach he never got distracted from his goal. He's stubborn and determined and Ijust completely love what they did with this movie. I also love how there's something for everyone who's played the games before.
I need a Super Mario World sequel with Yoshi and The Koopalings and Bowser Jr. I want a Donkey Kong movie bringing in the entire DK Crew and The Kremlings. I want a Luigis Mansion movie and Boos to be introduced proper. King Boo was in this Mario movie, but only for a scene. I want Kirby. I want Samus. I want Star Fox. I want Link and Zelda. I want "not live action" Pokemon in the same style as the Mario movie, maybe even following the video games more and the "Ash Anime" less. I. Want. The. Nintendoverse!!! Smash Bros movie, here we come!!!
I remember during the final battle of the movie having the biggest grin on my face, seeing Mario and Luigi tear through Bowser's minions before putting the smackdown on the Koopa King! Especially loved the last three moves they pulled off! 1: The classic spin throw from Mario 64 2: Mario's Forward Aerial attack from Smash 3: A neat little non-Mario reference, the two perform a double diving kick, which as a Kamen Rider fan I could easily recognize as the classic Double Rider Kick!
I brought my son to see this movie and it was a very nostalgic ride. Seeing the original NES, all the characters, and the excitement of my son (who hasn’t played a Mario game yet. He’s 5 and I couldn’t get a switch) made my entire year. I’ve been seeing ppl upset about the movie or even mad about them maybe creating a little series of sequels. It’s a fun movie. That’s what Nintendo stands for. Fun
Idk if it's just me, but when the Mario Bros. were helping their first client, that apartment REALLY reminded me of Hellen Gravely's suite from Luigi's Mansion 3
Man, I JUST walked out the theater and this drops. Stoked to watch! I definitely saw the “help me jumpman” sticker in the pizza place at the end, that was my favorite Easter egg that I spotted naturally
My husband and I took our son to see it and we all loved it. 😅 it was fun and didn't take it self seriously. Idk why the critics were expecting some deep level plot from a children movie 😂
I may not be a super Mario fan, but watching i was still able to catch so many details and references and it made the movie so much more amazing to me that it truly tops any recent Disney releases for me
Love to hear that they added so many call backs it's hard to list them in one video ! Illumination really did it right ! And I hope they continue to put the love and care they did in this movie in the future installments

Best movie I've seen in awhile, me and my son loved it.. was sooo funny and I loved how many Easter eggs they was from old classic games to the new ones... Can't wait for the sequel and the spin offs
This is the breakdown I've been waiting for! Well done! Is the gold gorilla in the sport coat the one who helps you solve a level when you fail too many times in DKC Returns? I would like to see Luigi's Mansion, Galaxy, and Donkey Kong Country in sequels.
LOVED this movie. All the throwback references. One you guys missed, when mario jumps the rainbow road with his Kart is a reference to an infamous shortcut for mario kart on the nintendo 64.
I loved this movie but I have a serious question. Where was Kamek in the last battle? He was seen holding the superstar with his wand but after the bowser fight hes just- gone? Can you see him at some point disapearing?
I had the largest smile on my face when DK got his fire powers. I thought this was one of the coolest parts of the movie and so far no one has mentioned it😢
They knew exactly what movie they were making and embraced it. I loved it, this film was a lot of fun, only wish they would've had at least more minutes on it but other than that, it was so so fun
There’s a couple other things that I could see. The first was that the dog from the luxury house may of been a descendant of the dog from the movie up. The second being that the depressed blue thing may have been a character from the movie soul as in the end it plays the saxophone
I was laughing, tearing up and smiling this entire film. Absolutely THE movie it needed to be. Gone are the Marvel films: time for some videogame movie goodness
Wow! Great job on this video and finding so many Easter eggs. This movie has been so nostalgic and on point. I love it! Can’t wait for the second movie.
FUN FACT: The sewer scene and majority of the introduction is based on an episode of the super Mario super show, where they save Brooklyn in the exact same way.
This was the first movie I took my 5 year old daughter to and her and I loved it! At this point in time, who really cares what critics say? They're almost always wrong
I had the dumbest smile on my face the entire runtime. They knew exactly what movie they were making and embraced it. I loved it.
Same! This movie made me so happy!

For sure. I also noticed about 10% of the Easter eggs. Excellent film and tribute to this beloved franchise
I liked how in the rainbow road scene, Mario drives off the edge and lands on the road beneath, like the shortcut in Mario Kart 64
I love that they included references to all their Mario games for the people who grew up with Mario. We need a sequel

Another reference in Rainbow Road was the jump from one part to another, which I think you could only do in the N64 version of it!
I CAUGHT THAT ONE!!
Yup !!
While I’m certain that they were referencing the infamous 64 shortcut, you can also jump between the split paths on mariokart 8’s rainbow road
And actually he gets to do that jump thanks to the boost he got from the drift
