- 2024 Range Rover Velar review by The Straight Pipes. The Land Rover Range Rover Velar HSE P400 is putting down 394 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque from a 3L Turbo Inline 6 cylinder with an electric supercharger and a 48v mild hybrid. At $102,545 CAD, would you take it over the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5?

They should’ve kept the second screen for the climate and drive mode controls.
Previous interior looks more premium
No buttons, no buy.
Buy a real Range Rover. They’ve got buttons.
not anymore...
I traded in my 2018 Velar for a 2023 RAV4 last year, and couldn’t be any happier. That Velar caused me way too many headaches.
My mum had a 2018 Velar new and it had issues within 3 hours of owning it. It went back and she moved to Lexus
Velar to RAV4 is downgrade right?
@@milannekuhh9818Sure. Still way happier with the RAV4.
@@milannekuhh9818 The RAV4 may be a downgrade in certain aspects such as the interior quality and overall styling, but you can't deny Toyotas reliability and ability to retain their value long term.

Bring back buttons!
And proper door handles!
At minimum I need a volume knob and physical climate controls
Ah! Couldn't think of a good way to express how much I miss knobs. Well done.
Or voice commands
At the very least give us those same dials in the higher end JLR products
That centre console with just the shifter looks very poverty. That one part turned me completely off the car.
I wonder if it's cheaper for them to design a minimal interior with only a screen
@@RayanMADAOand pass on the savings to the consumer right? Right?
The full size Range Rover has adopted a similar look, disappointing.
Hot take i really liked the duel screen Range Rover had. The climate and seat settings on the bottom screen was so cool.
The multi dials with the mjni screen in the dial that controlled air temp but you could press to control seat heat and cool were the best controls any car has ever had.
@@jeffreyjones3616 I absolutely agree and If I did buy a Range Rover I’d only buy a model with that
I'm SOOOO sick of auto makers ditching buttons! Who told them that car buyers/owners don't like them?????
Its the best cost cutting strategy in the automotive industry. Proudly led by Tesla.😂😂 In 2024 they even got rid of the steering wheel stalks in the name of "minimalist environment". What a joke.🤡
the velar is amazing, I own an evoque autobiography and sport autobiography v8 and couldn't be happier. thinking of getting the velar and replace it with the evoque. great video, I like how you get the point of this car and not bash it like other people who don't know a thing about it.
Just picked up a ‘24 Evoque from JLR London, loving it! Checked out the Velar in the show room and that might be the next one once this lease is up
"No buttons, no buy!"

It’s ballin until the car breaks down and you have to call for a tow truck on a 30 degree day lol. I won’t touch a Land Rover product if you pay me after my last car.
@@Ameer_30you can always count on Camry owners for that lol

@@Ameer_30because Rich can usually hand back their leases when it is over or even end their leases early by trading it in for another one
@@Ameer_30 you lost me at "leasing". of course owning a new car every 3 years wont give you problems. lets see that same car go 100k miles.
@@Ameer_30calling people poor but bragging your family leasing, also how would your family know about reliability leases has mileage and year limits
the original velar was great. had the first year with R-dynamic pack and it ripped. it came with a 6 (i think V but could be inline) and a real supercharger. plus it had dual screens… chefs kiss. i might get it after i’m done with the defender.
The Engine has not change. Edit, I mean the P400 has not changed.
I work for JLR, the earlier models have a 3.3l supercharged V6. It’s a great motor and was our best overall engine in terms of reliability and performance. Unfortunately once you finally get something good, then ofc they wanna get rid of it and now the new “charged” inline 6 replaced it. It’s ok but likes to drink coolant and is complex.

So MY23 & older are the ones to have. The center stack controls & second screen for modes is the best
Budget??? 😭
Couple of things: 1/ All other Range Rovers (Evoque, Sport and THE RR) have lost buttons and come only with screen, I was lucky to secure the MY23 RR Sport which still has buttons. 2/ The buttons on steering control still change as you go through other options in the driver display. Great video as always. Yeah no buttons is a deal breaker for many.
2023 rr sport scv8 forever!
Hey would it be possible to get a 0-100km times for each review? Great video's
That infotainment screen is a deal-breaker for me. Too distracting for me to touch the screen 2-4x, just to change the fan or temperature settings while I'm driving.
Great content
Why dont they tilt infotainments a few degrees towards the driver? My VW has that and I wont switch to another vehicle in a while

@@negahplz1156 that guy filmed about his Nissan armada… he doesn’t own a Range Rover lmao
That Rover is clean and classy.
Every since I got in accident and it was my fault cause I took my eyes off the road a brief second.. I don't mess with the radio. I don't mess with no functions or nothing when I'm driving cuz it only take a couple of seconds to get in a accident and I learned the hard way. Once I stop yes but when I driving my focus is 100% on the road.. learned my lesson..
My biggest issue with this cars interior is the lack of useable area in the centre there. That gear selector takes up so much room!
This is a vehicle that your trophy wife picks up the kids from private school in.
Nice but I’d rather a equivalent GLC or F-pace

🤣
When is that Sport SV review coming??
Check out Jaguar F-Pace SVR, which still has the 550HP supercharged V-8. I have one and much prefer to the higher priced Velar. Way more bang for buck and performance from the F-Pace SVR.
@@cruisersupsupport4502the F-Pace is a lot better than this thing they insist to call a Range Rover. But comparing it to a real Range Rover with this engine, the Jaguar is not on the level. Still a great car tho. Too much car for the price.
Do the Discovery, guys! Please! 😊
Talking about the physical buttons, you may notice that some Chinese brands like Zeekr do return them after clients' requests.
Music volume, climate controls, air suspension and drive modes are the buttons that I actually use. Let them be!
I have the 2022 version which has buttons thank god i was thinking about updating to a newer version but i guess not. yikes 😬
I don’t like the change of climate to the infotainment either, but FYI you can hold down the climate and swipe up and down to change the temperature faster and the same for drive mode.
Headed to Monaco to view all the exotic cars
I suggest/recommend the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, which still has the 550HP supercharged V-8 and way more soul. I have one and much prefer to the higher priced Velar. Way more bang for buck and performance from the F-Pace SVR. Comparable luxury.
What do you mean "higher priced Velar"? Velar starts at $61,500 with a nicely equipped one around $80k. The F-Pace SVR starts at $92k.
@@jeffs6090 when similarly equipped
Quite a great car. For me, it’s only a lose for not having the air suspension. But would probably choose the F-Pace over this wannabe-Range Rover.
The air suspension in the Velar sucks, it constantly fidgets from side to side on flat roads. If there are bumps is sways like a boat. @@ogearhead2426
@@cruisersupsupport4502for a couple of year models the Velar was offered with the super charged v8 5.0. It was a rocket. Shame they took it off the options.
Can I get the Velar with a velour interior.
The only people that benefit from Land Rover ownership are the mechanics.
I doubt the mechanics want to work on this unreliable garbage… maybe the service writers?
It's a rakette.
Well i usually share your JLR videos with my cousin who works for them, who is also married to a Torontonian but i might not share this one lol
Just waiting to hear the price is fun.
Surely they could've moved the gear selector to the steering wheel column..
How'd you comment 1 day ago on a 46 second old video...
@@hamzabinwaheedgood question.
Maybe they didn’t want to move it- and don’t call me Shirley.
@@hamzabinwaheed I subscribed to their OF 😉😉
Gear selector position aside, let's talk about this time travel thing.
I drove by a Range Rover broken down on the side of the road last week, and there was a second Range Rover pulled up behind it. I think that's the play, buy two so at least one is always working.
Funny that Jaguar dealerships sell Range Rovers, their motto was always:
"Buy two jags: one to drive and one for parts"
The entry level RR is Evoque. Not Velar
Imagine spending all that money just to be frustrated with a infotainment system that works like the worst tablet on the planet
Can you review the new Land Rover Discovery, you have never reviewed one
They probably hate that car because of its polarizing looks. That's why they never reviewed it.
I had one. It was flawless. 3rd row gets panned. Had plenty of adult sized room once you were in it though... just a little difficult to reach. 2020 Landmark edition was the sweet spot for options at a value.
I miss the box test
Range rover perfection
Not a lot of cosmetic changes because they were focusing on build quality! Right?
What about the sport SV? 🎉🎉
Only made it for two years. It's been gone 😢
$102,454 CAD?? LOL What's the saying?,....a fool and his money are soon parted? Just look at how these vehicles tank in resale. It's no wonder Land Rover dealer lots are piling up with vehicles
90% of people lease luxury brands unless it's an extremely sought after/ rare model from the get go that will guarenteed appreciate in value over time. Then all the crappy reliability issues will be the 2nd, 3rd, etc etc buyers issues to deal with when they buy the lease return 3 years later at 20% interest for 6 years with their tax return money.
I am an accountant in Connecticut. Wealthy people who earn over $1 million a year usually prefer to pay cash instead of leasing. They take pride in ownership. People who earn between $150,000 and $300,000 a year, which is not considered wealthy, are more likely to lease.
@jamesbarbato2192 yea which is why I said 90% of people. That $1mil + bracket are part of the remaining 10% of shoppers for these vehicles
You guys should do another challenge video series soon.
They might not do another one. They're currently on a trip right now.
I believe each spec on a Range Rover should have an asterisk with a footnote
394 Hp*
* when not broken down
Well, its time to do a fresh review on the RR Sport, RR and RR Evoque as they all have the same infotainment screen without any hard buttons as of 2024
Or we can just never drive any of them lol
@@TheStraightPipeswhat about the LR Discovery? I know you both hate that car because of its styling, but you should get your hands on one!
It’s possible it seems slower than 400hp because parts are already broken like 1.) cylinder misfiring, 2.) low engine coolant that you have to fill up every week, 3.) suspension fault, 4.) power steering leak, 5.) sorry need a new engine
I hear the power steering software glitched out and it’s a tow to the dealer
As much as I like physical buttons, i do feel like late 2010 was peak over-use of them. I drive a Tesla every day, and i used to think a volume knob would be nice, but i have it in the steering wheel. Also, I thought I'd want a temp knob, but i leave it on 72 F and never think twice about it. Laslty, my wifes kia has a drive mode knob and we never touch it
Land Rover. Vehicles for people who have more money than common sense. I'm sure owners of these cars have multiples in case this one is in the repair shop.
The real ones are great cars with no issues at all. Most of them, when problematic, are bad ownership caused.

I shouldnt want it but its soooo prettyyy
What happened the enthusiasm you both had during the 750s review? lol

An inline turbo 6, ok i get that. The mild hybrid, okay sure. But why the electric supercharger?

@@_dmfd especially when bringing it to the dealership after warranty. Jesus I can only imagine.
Its supposed to kick in immediately while the turbo is spooling up.
@@GentlemanJamesWin that's my point. With electric motors as part of the hybrid system there's no need for a supercharger. Electric motors don't need a spool up.

Please do Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord
The redesigned 2025 Camry just got released last month. That can wait for next year.
Horrifying upgrade just took out good things from previous version
Ballin, definitely not budget 😂
To think people complain about the Hyundai Tucson touchscreens which has everything readily available and is awesome. This setup actually does suck.
All those screens are a recipe for distracted driving. Layers upon layers of slow reacting touch screen menus for the simplest tasks. Unfortunately, that is the trend and it doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon.
And if it is "cost cutting", as many have posited, why do the prices keep going up...up...up? Grocery Rover? 🤣 It is a nice looking raised wagon though.
The only reason I feel that car manufacturers remove physical buttons is so they can add subscription models and make you pay to use features that's already in the car, like a Tesla.
They can do that with buttons too, as they can open a subscription screen. It's just to save money on building/engineering/making molds for buttons.
@@goncalo33not really. Most of the buttons still are “mechanic” - this being having a physical contact directly with the car’s module.
It look like it moves fast as hell..lol
Make Buttons Great Again!!!
ldk why luxury makes are starting to go full screen no buttons but it's pretty crappy imo & makes shopping for a modern luxury car pretty difficult. The idea is even starting to trickle its way down to commodity brands too. When I was cross shopping last year I ended up settling on an A4 AllRoad Prestige over an A6 AllRoad almost solely bc Audi has also switched to all screen no buttons but you can still buy the B9.5 A4 AllRoad new with its nice physical climate buttons which are nice high quality too. Also the A6 had no visible exhaust outlets, not even fake ones so that was a big factor too. Our N America Automotive rules & regulations usually suck pretty bad but I feel like the no buttons issue is something they should step in on bc at the end of the day manufactures are doing it to save cost on production & development but still charge more & more year over year & at the end of it it makes using our cars not only more irritating but dangerous too.
It's insane to me that a car can cost that much and not have sun visors that slide
How did it not break down while shooting the video,Lol

Those tires are Dragon Ball Super thin.
You'd be impressed how well it rides still with the air suspension. Rover knows how to make a vehicle suspension work phenomenally instead of relying on the sidewalls to mask it.

The lack of hard buttons and the vast expanses of wasted space are nonsensical. Good job, JLR, at making your vehicle less appealing and dangerous to use!
Well least it looks good I guess lol
You can buy a Trackhawk for the same money, and it's arguably a more luxurious car in every aspect. Don't see the value in this one, you're just buying the brand name without getting the pedigree.
Or an Escalade V
You can actually get one a good amount cheaper since they haven't been in production for a few years, but then you're buying a used Jeep that has guarented been rung out daily since the day it left the lot, that also already had a good amount of reliability & quality issues & was already pretty outdated from the day it was new.
