  • When you receive a mental health diagnosis for the first time it feels like your world is crumbling, you have anxiety about what to do now!! As you let the diagnosis slowly absorb in your mind and body, just know that you have a lot of company in that new world, people you can talk to, professionals who can guide you, books to read and advocates in your home, family, friends and many employers now have programs to help.
You can do this. You are not alone. Your life is not over, only a new chapter is beginning.

I'm sure you helped a lot of people yesterday because of the panel discussion! I thought it was fantastic. Keep on advocating on this subject, you never know when or who your impacting through your work.

Thank you so much ! It was such a pleasure to be a part of a panel discussing mental health. Very thrilling in fact. I appreciate your encouragement. Advocating to lessen the sting of stigma is for sure my passion and I will continue as long as I can speak ! :)

I appreciate your courage talking openly about your experience. There is nothing to be ashamed of because this disease happens at the molecular level and the "inappropriate" behaviors that occur are out of your control. I think I read once that part of the explanation for these behaviors is that such a patient becomes less aware of what is socially acceptable and what is not socially acceptable behavior. I'm 31 years old now and relatively stable. I have had two bipolar episodes in my past and done the most inappropriate things: In the second one (when i decided not to take my medications) I shouted in public in my university in front of students; I drove my dad's car recklessly in streets full of traffic until the car wrecked and shut down; I walked in the middle of a street with the direction of the traffic at night until the police caught me, hand-cuffed me and was hospitalized for about a month until they made sure I adhere to my medication. That was a heavy experience and i learned how important the medications are. It is all a past memory though and I don't feel ashamed at all. People should become more educated about our situation and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Thank you for your courage and your RUclips content is among the best and most impactful out there.

You have certainly over come many things! I am very glad that you have a lifelong lesson about medications as you said. It is your road and your learning that will help others. I am proud of you doing so well after your episodes. We all have our bag of rocks to carry around. Thank you for sharing some of yours. Bless you in your journey and thank you for the very kind encouragement !

A good therapist can make all the difference. Good for you that you see them. Rejection from your family must have hurt you. Praying for healing every step you take.

I was properly diagnosed in the year 2000 with Bipolar Disorder. My Doctor thinks I had it since 15 so I experienced 22 years of not knowing. It was a relief to get the help I desperately needed. Thanks for.writing.
