I recently purchased a huge coin collection from a family. Most of the coins we collected prior to 1980 and while a large portion were organized in Albums, thousands of coins were accumulated an stored in cigar boxes as loose coins. This video features 3 Dansco-style Albums (pre-1970) filled with different Liberty V Nickels and Buffalo Nickels.
A V Nickel refers to the Liberty Head nickel, a five-cent coin that was minted in the United States from 1883 to 1913. The coin features a design with a profile of Liberty on the obverse (front) side, often referred to as the "V" nickel due to the Roman numeral "V" representing the coin's face value of five cents. The reverse (back) side typically depicts a wreath and the denomination.
One interesting fact about the V Nickel is that the initial design lacked the word "CENT" on it, leading to some fraudulent practices where the coins were gold-plated and passed off as five-dollar gold pieces. In response to this, the design was later modified to include the word "CENT" below the Roman numeral "V."
You won't want to miss any of this series if you love coin roll hunting. I'm hunting through all of these old coins looking specifically for varieties and rarities in these albums. This is somewhat similar to coin roll hunting, looking for the special treasures or varieties, but better!
