I recently heard this in a recital and the transition from atonality to an old Dowland madrigal left me breathless. Beautiful piece indeed, I wish I heard it sooner.
Thank you for posting this great performance of a truly great work, usually overshadowed by the 1976 string orchestra revision. Bashmet and Richter are perfect here and very spooky. With Shostakovich's very late viola sonata this Britten masterpiece are the two truly great viola works of the 20th century.
Thank you very much! Wonderful musicians, caring about the music and what the composer wrote and not just their own vanity, like unfortunately many of the actual players do
yeah, good musicians, but actually Bashmet doesn't care too much about the instructions. For example variation 4 should be allegro con moto, and in 2 and 3 a lot of pitches are just wrong

Do you remember who was the violist?

Don’t forget the wonderful contributions of Hindemith! Or the concertos of Walton, Schnittke and Bartok (which is sadly unfinished.)
yes indeed , it is a great work and a wonderful interpretation ! check also toru takemitsu "nostalghia".....
I recommand you to listen to the Elegy for Viola from Stravinsky! Incredible work as well

Something to imbue. ♡
Before looking at the description- I knew it had to be Mr Bashmet and Mr Richter!!!
nice
The amount of wrong notes Bashmet is playing is quite surprising
Very surprising, perhaps first edition had many mistakes
