Is Audible Worth It?

  • I'm a long time subscriber to Audible, so today I tackle the question: is this ubiquitous audiobook subscription service worth the money? And if so, who is it for?
    **Try Audible: www.amazon.com/...
    **Try Kindle Unlimited: www.amazon.com/...
    One "con" I forgot mention (although it could also be considered a "pro"!) -- because many of the audiobooks I am most interested in owning are LESS than $15 for Audible members, I can't justify using the $15 credit on that book and therefore I end up spending more on audiobooks than I wanted to for that month (e.g. a $15 credit + another audio book for less than $15)

    I take advantage of the ebook/audiobook discount often. In fact, depending on the Kindle price, it is sometimes more cost effective to buy the ebook just to get the Audible discount. I recently finished listening to one that I bought as an ebook for 1.99 and the audiobook version was then discounted from 17.99 to 1.99.
    Amazon will also generate a list of those available discounts for you (referred to as audio companions) so if you have a giant ebook library, you can easily spot which titles it is worth it to pick up from Audible as well.
    I also save my monthly credit for a book that's much more expensive than 15.00 and pay out of pocket for books under 15.00 if I'm really interested in them.
    Just some tricks to maximize the value.

    I listen to a lot of audiobooks and am a long time subscriber to Audible. In the UK they offer a range of subscription plans and I go for the annual 24 credits for £109 plan. That combined with their "3 for 2", "2 for 1", "audiobooks for £3" and the "Daily Deal" offers mean that I have built up a huge audiobook library, which I need since I listen to about 70 a year. Now that there are the free podcasts and the three books per month you can listen to on Alexa for free, I think that Audible must be the best value for money of anything I buy.

    I love Audible, it's definitely my favourite place to get audiobooks. There's also a fantastic feature that not many people seem to be aware of that allows you to return an audiobook within 365 days of its purchase and get refunded (whether you've listened to it or not). I have been using this method to my great advantage, especially with romance. Though you'll probably have to google "how to return audiobook on Audible", because their hid that option pretty well...
    My favourite purchase so far has been the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes, narrated by Stephen Fry. 70 + hours of pure goodness and all for 9.99 euros!

      @@bookslikewhoa I use scribd, and I really like their audiobook offer. I use it for those audiobooks I'm not sure I want to spend a credit on just in case I don't like them, so if I do, I can actually buy them in audible (I like to re-read and re-listen a lot). The thing that bothers me is that they allow people to ilegally upload books in pdf format. I'm still deciding if I'll keep on using it after I noticed that.

    Audible made it possible for me to read more. With a full time job, and a little girl, I found it impossible to read. At night, I would open a book and fall asleep right away. Now, I read/ listen during my commute and any time I am in the car. Also, when I do laundry, clean the house, take a walk, etc... I love it!

    The types of audiobooks and genres I listen to are generally priced between $30 and $70 so yeah Audible credits are a great deal for for me. I also have a kinda small library and I re listen to books I enjoy all the time so owning them is really the way that most appeals to me I know that if for what ever reason I can't keep up with a subscription I have a bunch of books I can re listen to and I actually have about 5 books I haven't heard yet so I could even get a new experience if my subscription had to be dropped for a while

    I use Audible and you give a clear description of the service. Also, you can return the book if you don't like it. I don't use that option often but I have used it and have had a professional and easy experience doing so. I'm an author and I'm having one of my books narrated. I find it to be an alternate art form and adds a whole new level to the story. Being sight impaired it's a must for me. This was a great video.

    The other thing for people who are a bit iffy on giving Amazon money, is libro.fm which is the same price as Audible, but you can pick your local indie bookstore (or whichever indie bookstore you want to support) and they get the credit and part of the profit of the sale. Their titles are also DRM free for people who are concerned about that as well! I use them as well as Audible since Libro's catalog is a little smaller due to Audible having exclusive rights to some titles or publishers not wanting them to be offered DRM free.

    I can take a while to finish an audiobook because I mainly listen on my relatively short commute. Because of that, I generally get longer audiobooks through Audible and use my library for shorter books. I also have access to two library systems so I’ll put things I’m interested in (not just audiobooks) on hold with both systems. I check out the one that comes available first and then cancel the other hold. I’ve also found that Overdrive usually has the longest wait time, so I always check Cloud Library, RB Digital, and Hoopla to see if what I want is available on any of those platforms.

I do have a big library full of them from the two years I was a member, and I love re-listening to them. I also have quite a few that I still haven't listened to, so I think it's worth it. The fact that you will always have the audiobooks in your library is the best part of it.

I am not really interested in owning audiobooks, as I'm almost certain I'll won't listen to a book more than once... but my library selection is usually pretty limited, especially with new releases. I thought about Kindle Unlimited, but it's almost impossible to "break even" in terms of using what you're paying for- Audible definitely wins there. I guess I'm just hoping for some factor that will push me to subscribe to Audible haha. I am an Amazon Prime member, so I guess there are sometimes perks with that.

    I love audiobooks and owning my favourite ones, so Audible is a great fit for me. The first time I really fell in love with the audio format was on a two week beach holiday when there finally was an answer to the "how many books to pack and how to read comfortably while sunbathing" questions were no longer a problem for me. Audible also offers numerous titles that are difficult or even impossible to find elsewhere, especially as I'm Finnish and like to read in English.
    It's difficult to choose my all time fav. audiobook, but Daisy Jones and the six is quite high up there, I loved the full cast production!

    Great video! I'm new to audiobooks and I'm still trying to get used to listening to most genres without starting to daydream. I really like Audible's option to trade an audiobook if you're not into the story or narration but I know a lot of people take advantage of this by listening to the whole book and then trading it in for another one. I just discovered Hoopla, which I love because it's so much faster than anything on Overdrive, which I've now abandoned. As a side note, you mentioned your taste in nonfiction books. I hope you'll consider doing a video on your nonfiction interests. :)

      I have also seen people take advantage of Audible's return policy. It is supposed to be for purchases you are not happy with, and I have used it for that purpose. I worry that Audible will get tired of people taking advantage of them and remove it. They've already reduced it to a year, when it didn't use to have that limitation.

    Thank you for this. I'm in my trial period right now and was wondering what others thoughts are on Audible. One thing I found is that there are several books that say "Included" that I can add to my library at no cost. I'm interested in classics and most of these are in that genre so maybe newer books wouldn't be included but it certainly makes the $14.95 more reasonable. Also, I recently received an offer to sign up for one year for $120 which I'm considering. It's probably one of the many "sales" you mention and after a year I should have a good idea whether I want to continue or not.

    I used to really love audible and I still like it a lot, but ever since I started using Scribd I actually cancelled my audible subscription. It really did boil down to whether I cared about _owning_ my audiobooks. The answer to that was almost always no, with the exception of a few cases where I liked the book (and performance) so much that I didn't regret owning the audiobook, sometimes in addition to a physical copy. But since using Scribd I enjoy reading audiobooks that are shorter (because I don't feel pressured to get the most bang for my buck) and that are more on the commercial side, like romance and YA. I still sometimes use audible if it's a book that I want to read as audio and it isn't available on Scribd.

      SuperHappyNotMerry I agree that there are pros and cons. I like the version of kindle with the option of a reduced price audiobook (or free). And I have started doing this for any audiobooks that I want to own or that is only on Audible and then Scribd for those that I just want to borrow. I’ve listened to lots on Scribd but although they give more than one per month, they also aren’t reliable so you might have to wait for the following month. I did Becoming this way.

    • @SuperHappyNotMerry
      @SuperHappyNotMerry 5 лет назад +1

      @@hollyc4624 totally yeah there are pros and cons for sure. With Scribd it _has_ happened to me that audiobooks I had downloaded and had been planning to read were suddenly unavailable until a further date so that's something to keep in mind. And with audible I have also taken advantage of the reduced price of audiobooks if I already own the ebook. Plus, in the months when I use Kindle unlimited I try to take advantage of the audiobooks that are free with that as well. Both are great services but I don't use any consistently. I always pause Scribd if I'm using audible more, for example.

I wish the service would give a warning or something so that you at least had the option of which book to keep if you have more than one. I do like the option or encouragement on my side to take on the smaller books that I would choose against for the same reason of wanting my money's worth if I purchase the book.

    I love audio books and really enjoy my Audible (AU) subscription. Some books I like to buy can cost as much as AU$60 for a non-member e.g. memoirs/biographies, so having the subscription is really beneficial. We don't have the same deals as the US Audible but they have started to make some changes so it is more enticing. They also allow you to have six months credit but then you start to loose it. I've carried over up to 4 months but usually I always want something each month or even more frequently. I love how you can buy an ebook and get the audible really cheap e.g. I've gotten an ebook for free and then the audible for AU$3.50. I started borrowing audio books from my library before jumping into a subscription to make sure I would like listening to audio books. I find the majority of books I want to listen to my library doesn't have them but I often check out my library especially for a new author or to test a narrator as a narrator can either make or break a great book. Their website says "What you get. 1 audiobook and 2 Originals on us. 3 titles every month after you join." That doesn't say anything about a 'credit'. How I understand that is- You get to pick one audiobook of your choice a month, and pick two from their selection of the month (originals) for your subscription of $14.95/Month. How it is explained makes it seem like you get a $15 credit to put against any audiobook you want, and get two free from their Originals. So why would I subscribe when the subscription cost is the same as my supposed discount of 1 credit ($15)?

    I never buy an Audible book that cost less then my monthly fee with my subscription account. I also find that with the discount you receive as a memeber when you buy the ebook it well worth it. I love audio books when I am traveling., cleaning, crafting, just wanting to lay back and close my eyes. I listen to my audiobooks at bedtime a lot. What I don't like is that if I cancel my subscription and have credits available that I paid for I will lose them. So make sure you use your credits before you cancel. I also check and see if my library has the audio available before I buy it.

    I’m retired so I don’t have a commute which I think is prime audiobook time. I do read my Kindle when I’m waiting for appointments but all-in-all I prefer to read actual books. My question really is do you think audiobooks are worth considering? Can you really get into them like you do a regular book?

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  5 лет назад

      I definitely do, but I think it varies from person to person. Some people can't focus on audio as well as they can on physically reading- for me, I find I am fully immersed for non-fiction, mystery, and SFF books, but not for other genres.

    I love audiobooks! They're really helpful at my job because some days I have work that doesn't require a lot of brainpower, so audiobooks make the time more enjoyable. Audible works well for me because you can return audiobooks and get your credits back. I generally don't hang onto audiobooks if I don't like them so I'm glad I can try again with a new book

    I can't imagine paying for an Audible subscription when I have access to decent section through library apps. But then I have a hard time with audiobooks outside of a very narrow set of situations, so I probably wouldn't be the ideal target market regardless.
    I've never had an Audible subscription, but I've kept the app on my phone for several years. That's mostly for the rotating audiobooks that are (or used to be) available with Prime - after the last app update I can't find that section, but I don't know if they've done away with it completely or just hidden it.
    Still, they do enough regular freebies online and at literary events (I've come away with free credits from 3/5 of the last events I've been to where they've had a promotional table) that I still have fond feelings towards Audible in general.

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  5 лет назад

      Yeah they do have a lot of freebies out of there which is great! I also like that it integrates the audio from my iTunes library from years ago so it has all my audiobooks in one app which is handy :)

    I love audible. I get most of my audiobooks from overdrive but when they don’t have one I want I use audible. I like that the credits pile up because I don’t use them every month and some months I’ll want more than one. Con is I think you can only have 5 credits before they disappear.

    I love audible. Especially since you can return books if they weren’t the right fit. There’s a few books i started that i couldn’t finish, and returned them to get my credit back. I try the romance package every once in a while (when I’m able to listen to a lot), because it feels like Netflix -instant downloads to try. But the choices available aren’t enough to keep my interest for long, so i cancel that add on and try again later

    I have both an Audible and a Scribd subscription and love both of them. I use Audible to get Audible Exclusives mostly, I think they are of amazing quality :) I live in France and have no way to get audiobooks through my library unfortunately :/ I listen to a lot of audiobooks, first because I love this format, I'm someone who is very sensitive to sound but also because it gives me access to so many books in English that I don't have access to in my library in France.
    My favorite audiobooks so far are Skyward, Radio Silence, Daisy Jones and the Six, the Murderbot Diaries, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and The Poet X 😊

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  5 лет назад +1

      Great recommendations! And yes, I guess the English focus in the Audible catalog is both a pro and a con- but if you're looking for English audio, it is a great resource

      @@bookslikewhoa They also have a lot of audiobooks in other languages though, I'm thinking of listening to some in French actually because there a few authors who narrate their books (which I adore) :)

    I adore audible. She and I have been in an on/off relationship for several years now, but I find it's great for when I really want a title, but either my library doesn't have it or the wait is too long. I really like listening to much longer titles on audiobook in general, and it's nice to not feel pressured to have to return it in two weeks. Some books take me less than a day to finish, some take me a month. Also the mobile app is stupendous and doesn't freak out when I trade off devices. As much as I love libby and scribd, their apps are mildly busted at any given point in time lmao.

    • @bookslikewhoa

    So if you pay £7.99 is it only one book a month?

  • @danecobain
    @danecobain 5 лет назад +1

    I had a subscription for a few months but I ended up cancelling it because of money reasons. So many of the books that I listen to on audio are available for free from Librivox anyway because I only listen to audio for re-reads and I re-read my fair share of classics. If it was like Netflix and the subscription fee covered unlimited audio book streaming, I think it'd be worthwhile. Otherwise it just gets way too expensive way too quickly. When I buy books from charity shops for 49p, I can't justify spending £10+ per month for just one or two audio books. It's mad to me that the physical books are 10-20x cheaper than the audio.

    • @danecobain

      I've just thought of an example of this! Brian from Brian's Bookshelves is doing a Sherlock Holmes readalong in July with short stories from different books and I'm going to take part via audio. With Audible, I'd have to use six credits to get six different books (to be fair, I think you can get the complete Sherlock Holmes for one credit, but the point's the same). With Librivox, I'll just download the specific stories. So it's actually more convenient too!

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  5 лет назад +2

      Yeah, totally fair. I think it just varies from person to person in terms of the value, how picky you are about narrators, types of books you're trying to listen to, etc. It's mostly worth it for me, but it's definitely something I think of as being supplementary

    Audible with the romance package is especially worth it if you read a lot. I read an audio book a day since I hate listening at normal speed. I read at 2.5 speed and it gets me through my work day

    Audible is a scam in a very specific way. Never use your monthly credit to buy a book for less than your monthly subscription because that would be throwing money away. 1 credit a month for a digital copy of a thing is not a good package. It can be the same price for a physical copy. It can be less for a physical copy. When comparing to other subscription services, Spotify premium is all of the music you want for their monthly base price. Why can't audible be like that? Simple, Amazon would rather spend much of their profits on influencer marketing than pass that savings on to customers. If audible was so great they wouldn't need to shove it down everyone's throat.

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I realized after I posted I forgot to mention this aspect... my non-fiction picks tend to be more than $15, so it works well for me, but my mystery picks are often less than $15 so I indefinitely end up not picking those up :/

  • @mastersal4644

    My problem with Audible was that I ended up buying books on sale and then buying them in another format as well which I felt was a waste of money. I will basically want to read the book even when listening to it.
    Also …. sales on Amazon are just evil. (Good video though and useful).

    If I get Audible it’s going to be for the nonfiction. I’ve come to prefer listening to some types of nonfiction and Scribd and my library both have poor nonfiction selections. Right now I’m reading a physical copy of Lillian Faderman’s The Gay Revolution (which is amazing btw) and I’d MUCH rather be listening to the audiobook.
