I've customized street bike tail lights with a similar effect. By taping off the design I wanted (on the inside of the tail light lense, and painting it (on the inside only) with flat black paint. You keep the smooth shiny red surface on the exterior of the lenses, but get the design you want illuminated. I.E., I made two circles, side by side on a rectangle light, instead of a rectangle it illuminated as two red circles. I think I did a series of horizontal lines on a square lense once, kind of a strobe effect. Taping can be meticulous sometimes on tail lights because of the diamond shaped texture on the inside but it's not hard. I think I pushed down some tiny areas with a toothpick and got clean sharp lines on finished product. Some are just smooth, with no diamond texture. So those are easy to tape off on the inside, and produce fine lines when painted.

I always thought the major area Honda lacks is in the style department and this proves it. A world of difference due to lighting and this ultra technical lighting actually compliments the design queue of the Civic. Well done on the design! Honda engines, design and reliability are Fantastic but due to lacking style, other Trendy manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, MG, European brands etc getting more recognition and increasing market share.
