    The ageing thing does look good but i just think there's nothing cooler than buying a brand new, perfect guitar - Playing it everyday and truly loving the guitar and watching it age naturally and individually to your playing style over the many many years of owning it. All the scratches and scrapes are badges that your guitar wears proudly, proof of a long life of being used. Or, ya know, just pay someone double the guitar's worth to have them pretend it looks old.

    • @GrowMasterGeneral
      @GrowMasterGeneral 3 года назад +8

      Unless you plan on waiting 40+ years for your guitar to have the natural aged look, then a relic'd guitar is the next best thing.
      A relic'd guitar is more than just some scrapes and dings. They actually looked aged (from the faded pickguard, to the fretboard wear, paint checking, etc). Whereas, I find that most people who let their guitar "age naturally" just purposefully abuse it to get that relic'd look. And it looks terrible, they don't look "aged", they look abused. I tend to take care of my guitars. My oldest guitar is a Fender I bought new almost 20 years ago. Still looks new and gets played every day.
      A vintage guitar doesn't look "aged" because it was abused and taken on tour... it looks "aged" because it is. That's the ONLY natural way to get a guitar with that look and feel. I don't know about you, but I don't want to wait 40-60 years to get that same look and feel.

    • @yz127
      @yz127 3 года назад +3

      I think it’s about the process itself. Because fender custom shop and Murphy lab never reveal their aging process, so we can’t really tell it is worth or not. Once I asked a punk friend in Japan help me bought a brand new MIJ tele. My friend asked me if he could use the guitar while kept it for me. Of course I said yes. I got the guitar after three months, that Tele looks like went through a custom shop aging process.. The metal hardware are all rusted, frets included. And it got few ugly dings(poly finish). I don’t know what happened to that guitar. Never asked.

    Murphy "worn" Gold Top £4600-£6100
    New/unworn Gold Top £2200
    Murphy worn-in premium, £2400-£3900 🤔
    Genuine offer to the Captain. I'm not far from Guildford. If your customers like the played-in and slightly scuffed up feel, but are aghast at the 2-4k premium, as a benevolent service to the guitar community I'm willing to play and wear-in selected new stock on your behalf for a significantly lower fee than £2-4k to provide those worn-in customers with a more cost effective route.
    I've developed a marketing tagline for this hand-played service...
    "Only a genuinely played-in Gibson is good enough"
    None of this simulated laboratory wear, this will be the real deal from genuine play.
    I'm willing to consider exclusivity clauses to offer my service only through Anderton's - I do like to support my local businesses.

      @PaulCooksStuff 3 года назад +3

      @@rodd1000 if customers are willing to buy them, I don't fault Anderton's or any retailer for stocking them. Most of the guitars in the shop are colours and shapes (and prices) that don't appeal to me. I'm all for more freedom of choice and there being something on the wall for everyone's taste. The retailers already carry the financial risk of tying up their capital and them still sitting on the shelf in five years time.

    • @ChrisEck13
      @ChrisEck13 3 года назад +3

      @@rodd1000 I couldn't disagree with you more. First of all, do you know that Gibson has guitars that sell brand new for 899-UK/999-US. How many other manufacturers are selling made in the USA guitars at that price? Not many. Certainly not Fender or PRS. Guitars cost money to manufacture. Gibson doesn't get the parts for their guitars for free and the workers don't make them for free. USA labor is expensive. Gibson's prices are directly related to the amount of time and labor that each guitar makes to be manufactured. Secondly these Murphy Lab guitars are basically Gibson's top of the line Custom shop guitars. Have you ever looked at the prices of other company's top of the line Custom shop guitars? Why don't you look at the prices of some of the boutique luthiers who build their guitars mostly by hand. Gibson does far more work by hand than a company like Fender. I'm not saying one is better than the other but obviously the guitar that costs more to make should have a higher price tag. And shame on you for trying to tell a company that they shouldn't be selling them. They have every right to sell any guitar that people want to buy and these Murphy Lab guitars have been incredibly popular. If you can't afford or don't want to spend the money on a guitar like this, then don't. No one is forcing you to buy one and it's not like there aren't a huge number of inexpensive guitars out there. Let people by what they want. Stop insulting the company, the dealer, and the customers.

I completely agree with the fact of Gibson just using this too make money.... but i do agree with if that’s what people wants and can afford then it’s amazing that they can purchase them!! To me it’s that everyone has a dream guitar they are always chasing and I’m so happy that brands are making amazing guitars!! @ChrisEck13 3 года назад +1

      @@rileyioacura The PRS S2 line is in the same ballpark but not cheaper and PRS uses foreign parts for the S2 line and just assembles them in the USA. Godin doesn't make any guitars in the USA, some are assembled in the USA but they're manufactured in Canada. Canadian labor is expensive too and im not saying that there arent USA made guitars that are cheaper but its very rare. The cheapest American made Fender is $200 more than the cheapest Gibson. These Murphy Lab guitars aren't just taking a Standard Les Paul and aging it. They are taking the best Custom shop guitars and using them, there's a big difference. Of course you're going to pay a premium to have anyone spend this much time meticulously aging a guitar. Sure it may not be worth it to some people but the fact is if you want people doing it that are the best, you have to pay them accordingly. Have you ever seen the prices at the top of Fender and PRS for their custom shops? People always only seem to give Gibson crap about their prices. A Standard Les Paul takes much more time, craftsmanship, and cost to manufacture than a Strat. Fender uses automated machines for nearly everything. Gibson is still is doing a significant part of the manufacturing process by hand. And Fender continues to increase their prices. I just don't get it. I never hear anyone ever complaining about the prices of any other guitars which can get into the same price range. It's just the cool thing to do to bash Gibson. PRS has a Strat with a bolt-on neck, no flamed top, no binding, none of the things that make Gibsons cost what they do, and they're $2500. People have been asking for these Murphy Lab guitars for a long time. And Gibson listened and did it and so many people just complain. Like they have some kind of need to go on the internet and put people's guitar choices down. I don't have the money for one of these guitars but if I did, it would really upset me when all these people all over the internet are putting down my choice for some kind of entertainment and they have no personal experience with the guitar. I don't have anything against Fender or PRS or anyone else. But even if I did, I'm not going go on the internet and talk crap for something to do. I can’t afford a Gibson or Prs or fender and I dream about owning one of each and I love to see people getting enjoyment out of them and it makes me want to strive for the opportunity to buy them even more but being ill and not being able to work for a long time in my late 20’s really gets to me and guitars and music are the only true thing that helps me feel better until I think about how I will never be able to own one but hey that doesn’t give me or anyone the right to put down someone’s love and passion and I feel horrible that is how it must of come across... I was only trying to say about USA guitars that are in the same price range and people don’t give them the attention either just because they aren’t super flamey or quilty and I understand that labour is expensive and it takes real craftsmanship to do what these people do but for people who can never afford one of those they just see it as a super expensive guitar that should be cheaper but I do honestly agree with you!! Beautiful opening jam. Seriously, Cap. You're improving by the bucket-load, and the joy you take from playing really shows.
    As for the guitars, I have to say they're tastefully done and really look the part. Personally, I'd rather age an instrument through normal wear and tear while using and owning it, knowing and becoming intimate with every scar, every wear spot, every nick, and every scratch. I simply cannot get into this pre-aging stuff any more than I can get into buying pre-distressed jeans or cars with fake patina.
    That said, I concede there's a market for this, and I won't begrudge anyone their place in this market. You do you. And if it gives you joy, maybe you can spread that joy by playing.

      50s wiring. You can do it to your guitar and it will sound close to this regarding the openness/airiness.

      I’ve a 2007 R8 that sounded a bit muffled, so I swapped the Burstbuckers for a PAF replica and it did sound better. Afterwards it came to me the info about the 50sW and I tried it. It was a revelation. Even the resonance point, which allow the guitars to be controllably microphonic, have improved.
      I now have my dream guitar, which I pitted against a real 1957 Goldtop and it left nothing to be had tonewise... It really helps to bring those upper-mids/treble sparkle to life.

    • @davidkieltyka9
      @davidkieltyka9 3 года назад

      A consequence of finally supplying the demand for genuine PAF clarity. Pickups made to the original specs plus pots that likely read in the 525K range if not higher (like many of the old Centralab pots used in the 1950s). The 50s wiring helps preserve treble when you roll down the volume pots too.

    Although I never questioned the manhood of those who enjoy reliced guitars I was dubious till I asked a friend working at the store I had been trading with since before I had a driver's license why anyone would pay the premium for a Road-worn Strat. He reached for his guitar which I had assumed was the real deal as I knew he had several vintage pieces he had collected during a career that included sideman time with national acts playing guitar, bass, or keys. The tactile sensation of holding that new guitar was truly that of caressing an old friend. I have gotten it ever since.

    I generally don't care for the whole relic'd guitar thing but there is something about the Murphy aged Les Pauls that just mesmerizes me in a way I can't explain. Absolutely beautiful looking and sounding guitars. I think some of these negative comment folks should hold and play one of these guitars. That's the only way they'll ever really understand.

    I have a VOS R58 lemon drop and I've always wanted it aged faster. The Heavily Aged one that Pete was playing is a dream to look at, but the tone of that dark burst that Lee is playing...oh my goodness. That opening jam was so good that I've played it now three times so far, and I ain't done yet - beautiful music. Lee and that guitar were made for each other and that's a portal to the higher power right there. Beautiful music, and some glorious note choices. He ain't called Captain for nothing. I think Koss was coming through on that one. Oh, and I found it on the page, and it's 9lb. That's not the lightest Les Paul. There is another discussion to be had here, because that blows usual preconceptions out of the water.

    The one thing about Gibson's aged guitars is you can usually tell the paint hasn't had the chance to set in to the wood. Wheras vintage sunbursts have that almost neon, holographic quality, where the paint has really settled into the maple, giving it a vibrance that only comes with age.
