    Damn, Robyn! Crushed it on the fight scene break down! That was like a course on how to animate a fight scene. Absolutely loved it! 10/10! I only get 2 channels under my rock RobynO and Skitty Animates, so Arcane wasn't on my radar, but is now. I hope you had a great birthday! When you get time please do another break down like this, it was so helpful. I hope you and your family will have a safe and happy Holidays this week!

    I've seen a lot of reactors say the animation was well done and realistic, but you are the first one to actually break it down frame by frame and explain WHY. Thank your for that.
    Also: Totally missed the fact that they dirtied the lens in various scenes (rain, dust, etc.) further selling the idea that Arcane was 'filmed' like a live action movie.

    I was so impressed with the subtle facial emotional and body language expressions of the characters. That alone sucked me into caring for the characters.
    If they released three movies on Imax, I would now pay money to go see them.

  • @lockekappa500
    @lockekappa500 2 года назад +78

    I'm honestly blown away by how much storytelling goes on in these fight scenes, how much we LEARN about these characters through the mere act of seeing them duke it out. How in Ep 3 we see just how much Vi has immersed herself into being the badass that she ends up being, even in her young age. How despite putting his gloves down, that Vander is still the "Hound of the Underground" and that we see that he could still be the forceful leader that he used to be, but chooses not. Or in Ep 4, where we not only learn where Silco's goons are at, we're introduced to the fireflies, and Jinx's headspace/capabilities, ALL JUST IN A SINGLE FIGHT.
    I could go on and on, but no other show that I've ever seen has put this much thought into not only the choreography of its fight scenes, but the storytelling of them within the narrative. Masterpiece.

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  2 года назад +9

      You're so right ! The fight scenes are absolutely incredible, because you learn so much from them and they reflect the interpersonal relationships and tell us more of the story just by small details like facial expressions, body language, framing, lighting, etc. It's just amazing how they do it. I dont think I've ever seen anything where they portray so much information through fight scenes

    Robyn, this is your second video that I've seen. I was very taken with your previous video on how Powder/Jinx and Silco's relationship began, even to the point of having my husband, who introduced me to Arcane, watch it. I loved that video because Jinx and Silco are my favorite characters in the series, and you broke down how their relationship came to be visually extremely well. However, I also value this new video greatly, because it takes a broader view at how the whole series is constructed visually. Thanks for your excellent work!

    People seem to prefer the Ekko vs Jinx due to its sheer artistry but that Vi fight in Episode 3 is just phenomenal, for the reasons highlighted about the opening few moments to what happens after. You can literally see her tiring, her form gets looser as her strength is sapped from the exertion, just lifting the cestas becomes more and more of a challenge by itself, her breathing getting deeper as the fatigue sets in, the huge gasp as she lifts her hands. Its visual poetry.
    They've clearly thought about and designed every frame to tell the story of the fight and its all there on screen. It might not have the visual flair of Ekko vs Jinx but damn, its the best fight I've ever seen in animation and one of the best in any visual media.

      Season 2 will likely take between 2-3 years to make because they hired a project lead that has experience and a lot of connections with Hollywood/actors, etc, etc. They are also hiring a lot more animators right now for season 2. Arcane IS a masterpiece! I was playing League of Legends when it first came out and stayed part of that community for many years. For fans of the game, I was a Soraka main, and that's about it! My Fiancé was the one who taught me how to support him at bottom lane and it's one of the things that brought us close to each other and the rest of our friend group. Nothin' like sitting in a house the size of a garage, sitting on couches with tray tables and laptops in front of us, smoking cigarettes & loading in for a match while listening to whatever dubstep trap was most popular - "Turn Down for What?"
    The Story and Lore of League of Legends has always been GOLD & the team who worked on Arcane... They Did It. They captured what the players LOVED and FELT about the game. The complexity and diversity of the characters fighting for their lives among this strange universe... seriously, everything you described!
    Like you, I could go on and on and ON... so I won't, LOL

      It helps that with must have been great advice from someone who has actual fight experience advised in these fight scenes. Really great fight scenes with real body positions, reactions and focus in real situations make this brilliant. Robyn0 just pointed out these things (and did a great job of it if I must say).
      The thing that has stuck out to me is the real life aspects they get right in this show. The "mixed media" feel, especially the scribbles that appear on-screen whenever Powder/Jinx is stressed, is highly reminiscent of comic book artist Bill Sienkiewicz, who I think is really good at depicting madness. He would do really wild things like glue photocopies of earlier panels or even lace doilies to the boards that got sent off to the printer. Goodness knows what the poor printer had to do to turn those boards into 4-color prints.
    So much of this show looks like someone at Fortiche read Elektra: Assassin by Sienkiewicz, which is a good thing.

    Great video. A few remarks.
    - Yeah, every frame of the show is a work of art. I wanted to take a few snapshots of the show because I managed to find the show in 4k, and... I ended up taking, like, a hundred. ^^;
    - The budget was quite considerable, BUT compared to a Disney or Dreamworks or Sony feature film, it was pretty low. The head of character animation said in a interview that they had like four riggers.
    - There have been "some changes" in the character design : the understatement of the century. I didn't know anything about LoL before I watched Arcane, so I've discovered Violet and Jinx through the show, and when I see them in other videos... it's not THEM that I see. The expressiveness of the characters, their EYES, is one of the first things that impressed me. To me, what Fortiche has done is just sensational. In Jinx's eyes, you can "see" her tragedy. I don't see much in the other Jinxes' eyes.
    - Side note : you act all badass saying "motherfucker" less than ten seconds in, and then bleep it ! It doesn't many any sense ! :D

    The reason the characters in LOL have small waists, long legs and big arms and weapons is because of the camera angle and size of the characters on the screen. They need to create a strong silhouette for each character because they are so far away, it's just form follows function.

    These are all the kinds of things I've been preaching (though much more thoughtfully put together than I do) to my friends and colleagues that even if you have no investment in League's lore or characters (I didn't either), that this is literally a masterpiece that if you are in this industry, be it animation, rigging, texturing, concept, cinematography, etc, etc, etc, THIS. SHOULD. BE. ON. YOUR. RADAR. The story is as accessible as any fantasy story introducing you to an unfamiliar world, and quickly establishes believable grounded characters. The amount of visual storytelling instead of relying on exposition is fantastic. Fortiche nails every single aspect (soundtrack is mostly good...haha). There are scenes burned into my memory from the amount of times I've rewatched them, and every once in a while I frame-by-frame sections to appreciate the attention to detail, especially in the animations, and I just want to absorb all of it into my skillset. I really hope they bring home recognition that it truly deserves from the Annie Awards in Feb, because I know lots of people that still dismiss Arcane. I've even had colleagues comment they thought it was mocapped and it's left me speechless and wanting to punch things.

    i can see why people like it but i have many issues with the show:
    >Jayce is a prodigy wonder boy who becomes the overman only to get turned into a cowardly, reactionary and clueless idiot that gets ordered around by other people
    >Viktor was the best character of the show but his story often feels like its being on hold bcs its other peoples time to shine. his arc has a bad pacing in the 2nd half
    >the corruption of the council makes 0 sense. it is treated as something vr bad by Jayce and even Heimerdinger the good guy mini sage is on it
    >but then he just randomly calls it "being to comfortable in good times" and then gets voted out (is it corruption or just some harmless alliance building ?)
    >Jinx felt a little unbelievable at times with how her meltdown align perfectly with "situations that could be missunderstood"
    >the proto homo erotic stuff with Vi and Caitlyn felt very cowardly, they were to afraid to make them explicitly lesbian so they do this under the rug thing
    >the 2nd half of the show had barely any world building. it feels like its just 2-4 characters in a music video taking their turn
    >the underground is way to homogenious. why would they all follow some tavern owner ? and then just the other guy that replaces him ?
    >how does 1 guy even lead such a place ? he is just a tavern owner
    >the mother of Mel (the black councler) and their relationship feels like some extremely questionable meta narrative about certain aspects of the real world experience of black people
    >the kids at the Tree and their whole existence also undermines the undercity since it shows that even within reach of them a better life is so easily possible.
    >it is NEVER explicitly justified how the relationship of the upper city and the lower city came to be and why it exists. so the whole thing feels like a story telling prop
    there is so much more... but overall i can see why everyone likes it.
    it is a unique show where i really dislike so much of it but i can still recommend it for the visuals.
    edit: but one thing i will criticize about the visuals, how much they milk that Jayce/Viktor back-shot of muscular Adonis next to frail Wimp that is about to die. at first its very powerful but they inflate it by doing it so many times. just a little less indulgence would have had more impact.

      Ok soo, some of these are a bit weitd for criticism. It looks like you have a big problem with subtext, and if something isn't explicitly said you don't get it.
      >Jayce is a science protigy who was dropped into a political environment because of that, it was made really clear that the guy have no experiance or idea what's going on, and he handles thes tension between the two city accordingly.
      >Heimerdinger isn't corrupt, the whole sceene is abouth how nearly every councyl member has their own shit, and thrn there is him. Who is so disatached from reality that he diesn't even notice. This flaw of his is continually shown, and ultimatelly this is what gets him removed. He usn't corrupt, he is well meaning, but kinda lives in his own fantasy word and is unable to notice corruption and other problems around him.
      >Vander isn't just a bartender. He has a history as a leader, even as somebody who lead attsaks againts the upper city. And he isn't doing it alone, he is just one of the most prominent figure.
      >The relationship between the two city diesn't have to be explicitly justifyed. Especially when the important part of it was shown repetitevly. Lover city: working class part, where the mines with toxic gasses, and industrial plants with toxic wastes were. Upper class part didn't care, class divide strengthens. Some other divides like how the use of air wechicles and later hextech furter escslate this, as the upper city no longer uses the lower city dicks for trade, cutting them away even more. It's all there, we don't need an i fodumb abouth Piltower's ~300 year history and class strugle.

      >Viktor is in the same position as Jayce and his actions are way more sensible than his. it makes no sense. they need to explain to me why a science prodigy is making these decisions. i dont think they did a good job in portraying him as a character with integrity. Jayce does stupid or intelligent things depending on what they want to set up in relation to the character drama.
      >Vander: same thing. they have to show me more than just a small cutscene of 3 people at the start if they want me to take the setting of the undercity for more than just a prop.
      >i dont need exposition for 300 years of class struggle. i need justifications for the actions that the people do. if anything the Hextech should have improved the lives of the people in the undercity since it is in the interest of the uppercity that they dont revolt or do stupid shit. but such a crucial and reasonable development is put on hold by people telling Jayce platitudes about how he has to wait and make more inventions that he can present to other nations. it feels cheap and undermines the setting.

    10:44 What animated fights are you watching? I feel like the best fights are in animation. The animators are free to make motion feel snappy and emphasize impacts. Although, Arcane is definitely on another level since it oozes high budget. I often feel like the worst fights are in live-action since everything is hidden with jump cuts and awkward choreography that feels unnatural.

    • @bellac6311
      @bellac6311 2 года назад

      I feel like fighting in animation often falls down one or two faulty paths. Either 1) the animation is aimed for kids or teens, and so the fights have to be more focussed on defense, running away, and even when someone gets hurt they arent hurt in a way that would be realistic. Its toned down for its audience. Or, 2) They used mocap, which for me is as bad as fight scenes in live action film, because at the end of the day, its a person doing the movement and so it still feels slightly stiff and/or awkward.
      The reason the Arcan fight scenes stand out to me is because it does neither of the two previously mentioned things. Its gritty: teeth are knocked out, bones crunch, noses bleed, spit flies everywhere. Even more so, the women get roughed up. I feel like often in media when women fight they dont actually get hurt in a way that is gruesome. Like, Vi spitting out a tooth? That was the first time i'd seen a female character do that in a show/film. Seeing the characters that were fighting not fighting in a "pretty" way, or a "clean" way, made it feel so much more realistic.
      Also, none of Arcane is mocapped. In fact, there are some frames where the model is stretched slightly out of proportion in order to make the animation smoother and make the fight choreography not feel stiff, like it often does with live action or motion capture.
      Fight scenes are great when done right, and this is one of the few times ive really seen it done right. Maybe thats just me and the media ive watched, but idk
