  • Did you know that manufacturers are still producing new darkroom equipment, including enlargers? Doug and I unboxed a brand new Kaiser Color Enlarger fresh off the assembly line. Check out what's in the box and what our conclusions were when we compared it to other widely available enlargers. (And don't miss the bloopers at the end.)

    Just looking at this unit and its design/features, I expect that it is made by Durst for Kaiser, which means very high quality. Durst left this industry years ago, but most of the parts of this unit look like they were taken out of a parts bin for later model Durst consumer enlargers. The odd aspect of this unit is price. In the US, its offered for a bit less than $3700, meaning that its not going to get sold here. In Europe, it seems to be around $2000 - $2700. I thought that seemed ridiculously high, until I checked the new prices of the few remaining enlargers available new today. IMO anyone looking to build a new darkroom with medium format enlarging would be far ahead by putting in the time to find older, used enlargers - far cheaper and better quality.

      No you are totally wrong. The Kaiser modular enlarger system was based on an own design line. The production is ongoing and they also upgraing the enlargers. The technical details of Kaiser and Durst Enlargers are totally differernt especially the Color head and diffusor designs.

    Could you please tell me what the density button on the left of the head is for (0-60). I have a VPM 7005 and I don't see a use for it. Thanks for your nice video, Kaiser is making great material.

      The density button gives you the possibility to increase the exposure time by 2 stops. Its an advantage for color prinitng and whne you need longer exposure times for example while dodging and burning.

    Is the build quality of head chassy plastic?

    • @silvergrainclassics
      @silvergrainclassics  3 года назад

      The head is made out of multiple materials, cast iron, pressed metal, there are also high qulity plastic parts as well as dichroic filters. The outer coating is very scratch resistant.

    Great, but i'm afraid of the cost. It should be terribly expensive.

      Well depends. The price as a future in investment is really ok.
