With another day in T&T ahead of me, I set out bright and early for a Trini food tour at 7 a.m.!
Doubles are the ultimate Trinidadian street food. They consist of a fried flatbread called bara, which they top with chana and chutneys. They can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

My friend David and I would be going on a doubles tour of Maraval, just 20 minutes outside of the capital, Port of Spain.
We started at Captain’s Doubles, a food truck in the area. I loved their spot. They fry the bara up fresh, and they also make aloo pies and cheese pies, which they also stuff with chana.
The bara is actually dry and crispy around the edges because they fry it at a super high temperature very quickly.
These doubles were a little spicy and sweet, and the bara was light, a little doughy, and a little crispy. And it’s not too filling! It was phenomenal.
Then, I ordered an aloo pie. You can specify how browned and crispy you want it. Ours were perfectly golden brown!
I loved the mozzarella cheese inside. It was so gooey and pungent, and also sweet and spicy! It would have cost us 6 TTD/$0.88 USD each for the doubles and 8 TTD/$1.18 USD for each pie, but Captain gave them to us on the house!
Next, we drove one minute to Adam’s Bakery to get some coffee. There are lots of coffee shops in Trinidad. They have a bakery and a supermarket, where they sell lots of Middle Eastern and Indian dishes.
I ordered an espresso and David had a cappuccino. We met the barista Matthew and the owner, Adam. Adam’s has been open since 1992!
My double espresso was really tasty and a little bitter. It was exactly what I needed to wake me up! Then, we went to Nick’s Cafe and met up with Jason.
There, they made hops bread, which is a bread bun sandwich filled with chana, cheese, coleslaw, peppers, chicken, and other fillings. There was a huge line going out the door!
The chana and cheese is the traditional version. It was huge! I loved how loaded it was with the chicken, coleslaw, and chow mein.
There were some bones in there, so be careful. But it’s so good, with tons of different textures.
Jason had the traditional chana and cheese one. It was like a chana slider, and the cheese was nice and thick! I also liked the pepper and fluffy hops bread.
We also got one with liver and gizzards! It was my favorite one. I loved that they’re all really inexpensive!
Jason also got a stewed chicken hops, which was amazing, and I chased it with some icy grapefruit juice. It was so cold, sour, and fresh!
Next, we headed to A&J Premium Ice Cream, where they sell 117 unique ice creams including charcoal, ginger-turmeric, pepper, scorpion pepper, pepper-chocolate, pineapple chow, and more!
I wanted a spicy one. I sampled a spicy pineapple chow ice cream that hit me later, and a hot and delicious pepper mango that I loved. It was so pungent and balanced and creeps up on you!
The spicy darkie was dark chocolate with pepper, but not as spicy as the others. Next was the scorpion pepper ice cream, which was nice and milky and had a spice that crept up on me and hit me in the throat!
The ginger-turmeric was very gingery and really amazing. Then, they built me a cone with three unique flavors: the Voldemort, the Unicorn, and the Blue Moon.
It was a the Blue Moon was creamy and butter, and I loved the cotton candy flavors of the multi-colored unicorn. The Voldemort was a delicious coffee!

About Me:
My name is David Hoffmann. Since starting David’s Been Here in 2008, I have traveled to over 1,300 destinations in 88 countries to experience and document unique cultures on my RUclips channel, travel blog, and social media.
I highlight culture and historical sites, but my passion is food! I love to experience and showcase the different flavors each destination has to offer, from casual street food to gourmet restaurant dining.
Where have you been?
P.S. Thank you for watching my videos and subscribing!
I have never seen anyone do a complete food tour in Trinidad like this. Im gearing up to hit all the spots you did. Thanks for this incredible series.
There are many Trini vloggers…
I think he is talking about international vloggers not local. Its good david is showing the world there is Indain in Trinidad and Tobago since they did not know and thougt it was an all african country. Such a shame
@@elenaamal8632 I’m from Trinidad and didn’t know all these places. To be fair I moved to Canada in 97, so everytime I’ve been back I pretty much go to the same places but next time will be different for sure
I hope you try some of our Creole food because Trinidad is very multicultural we don't only have Indian cuisine.
Awful place why so much racism multicultural but don’t unite them well very well divided
@Javon Watkins And you seem to be happy by spreading racist values.
Jealous bc of food lol
@@joslippy2716 your attitude is exactly why racism still exists in T&T ! You want to throw it under the rug, because you're ashamed of it, instead of calling it out and demanding an end to it.
when you pretend it ain't so and hide it, you are enabling it and allowing it to fester and continue.
Allyuh sad oui
I am enjoying this Trini series! There's so much more to Trini food culture!
I just bought my ticket to Trinidad. This series sealed the deal for me. Thank you David!
@@FBA-2023 so sorry you can't do the same. Maybe next year!
When will you be there? I leave in 10 days 😂
Make sure you go South, to San Fernando too. If you have time and want to chill, hop a quick flight , or a boat ride for at least a day in Tobago.
Make sure you visit the 'Cross' in San Fernando. The food choices there is awesome!
I hope you had a good time
I give credit to David for "breaking" Trinidad out of all of the big youtubers. No one has been there yet and it shocks me considering they have the #1 best cuisine on earth in my opinion as an Asian American.
I would go vegetarian/vegan for Trini/Guyanese food if I had to. I wouldn't do so for straight up Indian food lol.
i have to give him props to for giving trinidad a chance and visiting watching these videos does make me feel hungry
I totally agree with you
I totally agree with you
@@superiorgundam Indian veg is pretty damn good but Trini veg is easily the best in the world. I can eat a million doubles and it's 100% veg. Doesn't even seem like it because the spices they use and fluffy bara is so delicious and filling. When you think of veg, you think of salad, which makes sense that most people wouldn't want to become vegetarian, but if they had Trini food, that would quickly change their mind.
Everytime I log in to RUclips I see David in Trinidad 🇹🇹 eating a doubles. Smh.. he is really turning into a doubles monster. I love it!! Thanks for visiting my beautiful country.
What an amazing country and wonderful people.
Watching tour vlog brought so many old.memories , at my time in 1998 the best dabbles were at the Piarco Airport .
And I used to drive all the way from Diago Martin.
I miss T&T may you stay as beautiful as you and your people are.
Love ❤️ from Pakistan 🇵🇰
David you're officially a Trini to the bone. One love ❤ 🇹🇹.
Thank you very much again David....it was really a pleasure meeting with you. You are so full of enthusiasm with what you do.
Thank you for showcasing our doubles and I'm really happy you enjoyed it. I know Trinidad 🇹🇹 is one country you will double back ( no pun intended) after completing the world. We are looking for 2mil subscribers b4 2023.
Thank you David for coming to Trinidad and Tobago to try our cuisine. Also thanks for showing us stuff we still haven't tried. That pepper ice cream looks fantastic. I will definitely visit A&J
Thank you so much! Appreciate you 🔥🔥🔥
Lots of channa......
@@paulinemuthena6545 I could live off channa. My husband is Trini. He cooks many of the vegetarian and pescatarian friendly foods from home. I okay everything if I can have channa! Well, I also love the roti shells.
Great show 😍 - the world is watching 😍 - come on folks it’s disheartening to see some of the comments - be happy your beautiful country is being showcased by such a successful RUclipsr
Their hate can never tear me down. I film my day and break it up into different videos. So much more to come, don’t worry about haters.. I have hater blockers on 😂😂😂
Since watching this series all they are taking him to eat for breakfast is doubles. We eat other things for breakfast such as saltfish bujol, someked herring , all the different chokas etc . 🤷
Agreed...
Thats what the guy loves and wants to eat incase u didn't recognize or heard it in the videos
I agree with you , You see those episodes when he goes to Tobago. He did try those. But he loves himself doubles he been saying it on his live stream etc.
@@purnimamaharaj4889 U can only love what you're exposed to. was he exposed to a variety of things? No...
@@reeneljoseph Tobago cook different to Trinidad. He didn't need to go Tobago to be introduced to a variety. I don't eat much in Tobago.....Theres so much more than doubles in Trinidad, and I eat doubles weekly.
Wow the stewed chicken hops bread looks AMAZING OMG I WANT ONE SOOOOO BADLY!!!!I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS YOU GIVE SOOO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT EVERYWHERE YOU GO AND ABOUT THE CULTURE AND THE PLACES IN GENERAL !!!I LEARN SOOO MUCH FROM YOUR VIDEOS AND THERE VERY ENTERTAINING!!!!YOU ARE VERY HUMBLE AND I SO LOOK FORWARD TO EACH NEW VIDEO !!!!!👍👍👍🥰😍🤩❤💙💕

Oh WOW
Judy 32 years? Na man, you need ah ticket-- l go back in 10 days and I can't wait.
So glad to see you're enjoying what Trinidad and Tobago has to offer...and there are lots more!
Please tell me since he is up Maraval he took a trip up Paramin by Uncle Clyde for wild meat, breadfruit oil down with salted pork, stewed chicken & macaroni pie, callaloo, fish brof, boil n fry cassava with saltfish and smoked herring, steam fish, etc. Enjoying the series but too much of the same food starts to get predictable.
@@stillirise7813 Uncle Clyde is a Raw dawg. Love his pot bake.
David as a Trini I can say your videos are super entertaining and not only highlights our local Trinidad and Tobago food or cuisine but also the places and friendly nature of the local people of the Caribbean. ☺❤
This man went to more places than me! And I live here 🤦🏾♂️
David you like doubles so much like a real Trini, aloo pies look tasty, like how David said you got it on the van and not the house. Glad you got to experience a variety of foods and the pepper Ice-cream . Another awesome video. Another awesome video keeps getting better. Thanks keep enjoying.

I am enjoying all of the trini videos and I know there are still more to come especially on his visit to Tobago but i hope we see him try trini soup, corn soup, fish broth for a change. 5 doubles stops is enough.
Yip he did try fish broth not sure about corn soup thoo , it was a massive pot of fish broth look so good when I saw it on his timeline.🤤

Doubles is probably the best street food I've ever had.
Out country is a beautiful place to visit for sure ! Nice food and great people 💕💕
Y'all making my belly boil🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤..proud Trini Here
I get the doubles and eating all over , tasting how other people do it is truly a much needed experience but one of the first things they should have given you is a good peleau with Cole slaw or/and avocado , macaroni pie and callaloo( pelau is a 1 pot meal I do not mean it all together ) . Macaroni pie is a way better version of baked Mac and cheese and is getting lots of international attention and was featured as a must have Thanksgiving dish . Callaloo is made with dasheen bush, ochro, pumpkin in coconut milk with seasonings . Pelau and how I love it is greasy and moist some like it dry , some love it sappy but you needed to try it since it is a staple of our island . We normally get some burnt to the bottom and call it bun bun and some people rather eat last to get most of it to eat cause it is amazing . Pelau is rice, pigeon peas and meat basically but people can put pumpkin or carrots . 1 meat or multiple as well. Even though you are highlighting a number 1 must have dish and even eaten every day if you left here without eating those 3 dishes you missed out on on meals that you won't ever forget and wish for on a Sunday
Perfectly stated🤗
🇹🇹 loving these videos...wild Meat ,salt fish, SADA Roti ,bake , breakfast shed 🇹🇹👍curry crab n dumplings so much more ...
Too much bread 🍞 in trini cuisine look good still
Next time please visit the San Antonio Estate in Gran Couva Trinidad to taste their fine flavour chocolate.

I love the moruga scorpion peppers 🔥
Nick's Cafe opposite my primary school. Good memories.
All I need to see is the streets, hear the accent, see a chow down on roti or doubles, and I want to go home. I was born in the states to an American father, and a Trinidadian mother, but we were in Trinidad every year. I was there as a toddler for six months too. I feel a certain way there, that can’t be duplicated anywhere. It’s now been three years, and I’m jonesing.
Awesome video.....👍🏿🇹🇹
David gonna leave Trinidad with a pot belly 😂
17:49 hope David had a chance to try some good Callaloo
Captains doubles really looks tasty. I must to visit that spot!

Doubles are a way of life in Trini.
Hol up, you went to Trinidad! Ayye!! 🇹🇹
The reactions to the scorpion pepper ice cream.........🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bara with chana looks so yummy 😋 David, How do you stay thin eating such delicious food all the time? 😀
Has to be intermittent fasting, on one of the videos he mentioned breaking his fast with fruit. It's the only way I stay thin also, because I love to eat.
First time I heard about spicy ice cream
trini for life
I like cheese and butter in my hops, never had channa😊
Bring me back to the Land of the Humming Bird and sweet fah so street sweet food.
I cant stop laughing at reactions in the ice cream shop.
Nick”s is the best!!! Plz try
I like the food and people
Being Trinidadian I'm just so so proud 👏
It's great to see how the Trinidad Indian Trinidad food has made its mark in the world. But as a 72 year Female Trinidadian. What has happen to those delicious dishes our parents prepared for us. Pelion peas and rice with stew chicken, beef,or,pork. And what about bread fruit oil down.
And what about the best soups. And what about our delicious gi.nger beer and sorrel. How about the old fashion tasty coco drink hot or cold. With fragrant spices. Those were true Trinidad food. And don't forget callow. Don't throw the true festive food away. We are a mixture of people and foods.
His channel is Indian based .. If you go through his videos , he visits other places and often eats the Indian food there .. I don’t think he did it on purpose.. his channel is mostly Indian followers so that’s probably why
STFU Trinidad and Tobago every creed and race.
The coffee looks interesting
