  • Truman Capote spent much of his childhood in south Alabama, years before he turned into a literary icon and before he began collecting his swans. Laurence Leamer talks about Capote, his life, and his downfall.

I wish there were more interviews of Truman Capote or film of him. He was always so fascinating.

Undeniably there is a underlying poetic nature to Southern turn of phrase. I believe without his time in the South he would not have been the same caliber of wordsmith that he was.

I read the book The Kennedy Women, didn't realize it was the same author.

love your interviewing style and i’ve loved reading leamer’s books since i first read some of his magazine articles and his book about the underground press in the early seventies. i love the varied subjects he chooses as they’re always ones i am interested in knowing more about. i just ordered this new book about capote! can hardly wait til the amazon truck arrives! thanks for having mr leamer on your show!

I think her interviewing style is condescending to "The South". She kept digging for a less than complimentary comment about it.

In Cold Blood is one of the most beautiful books about a most terrible subject that I’ve ever read.

Truman backstabbed his friends. At least these women thought he was their friends but he used them…so sad.

A very interesting man, well done, love the story about Truman's ashes, but why would anyone want to keep someones ashes? They belong in a cemetery. 😢

Most of those women were high paid, high class courtesans serving the needs of poweful men. They had to pay the price to the lifestyle, they choose. Unfortunatelly their children, very often, treated as a byproduct of their relationship with those men and their lifestyle. What an useless and miserable life to lead!

Well, very interesting, etc, but Mr. Leamer is a bit late to the party. All of this has been known for years, vis à vis Vanity Fair, etc, and some of Mr. Leamer's information is inaccurate.

Could you expand on the inaccuracies you've identified please? I was thinking of reading this book but don't want to embark on a fool's errand if it is 'Emperor's new clothes'. Thanks!
