This ending legit surpassed Jonathan VS Tanjiro and Magneto VS Tetsuo in terms of being sad. I also love how Spongebob casually explains that he's a sea sponge while getting punched.

I feel like they were planning to include Spongebob in a serious death battle since he is so popular, but they realized that he is so OP due to cartoon BS, so they decided to pick the opponent that would make things as hilarious as possible. They succeeded.
So they pit him against the weakest member of the Justice League. I mean, I hate DC, but jeez guys.
The thing with Tom Kenny's Spongebob voice is that Nickelodeon actually owns the rights to it (yes a literal voice). If Death Battle wanted to use Tom Kenny, they'd either have to ask permission or credit him under an alias, both of which could end up being very expensive.
Considering TK isn't just known for doing SpongeBob but a crap ton of other voices as well, yeah it would've been pricy.

14:42 In Nicktoons Unite, Timmy legitimately thought Spongebob was a giant block of cheese when he first met him, so yeah, the weirdness of having him alongside these human characters was not lost on them. The gameplay was honestly a little clunky, especially regarding more complicated mechanics like Danny overshadowing enemies, but it was a fun little beat 'em up for what it was. I remember it having pretty good attention to detail too, like Jimmy inventing moisturizer spray to keep Spongebob from drying out on land, giving everyone gum that let's them breathe in Bikini Bottom (which is actually a thing he had in the show), and him thinking Cosmo and Wanda were computer programs from their crossover specials. I also think at least all the main heroes and villains had their actual VAs reprise their roles, which is nice.

@@multiverse_media2023 i loved these games from tak 2 the staff of dreams, to escape from volcano island. almost makes me wish videogames did not go main stream just so we can have those game genres be more common, because for some reason mainstream can't fathom collectithons and 3d platformers adventure games that are not mario. or better yet games that are hard like dark souls should have a "easy mode" (god i hate the mainstream sometimes). (also sorry if i sound heated in this comment).

After that, it just dragged on for so long and milked hard despite it's creator not wanting to continue the show any longer (which he wanted it to end after the movie but Greedalodean couldn't bear to see that so they did the exact opposite of his wishes).

Fun fact! Spongebob is canonically a god. Spesifically roman god of fry cooks. Im not even joking. In an episode i cant remember neptune (roman god of the sea, king of the sea in spongebob) crowned him the roman god of fry cooks and offered him a spot in atlantis as his personal chef. Spongebob refused, but neptune never _revoked_ his godhood. Spongebob himself never gave it up or handed it down to someone either so that means, canonically, in present day, spongebob is his universe's roman god of fry cooks. When you put it that way his OP abilities make a bit more sense.

Spongebob giving Aquaman the Number 1 gravestone implies Spongebob believed that Superfriends Aquaman is the best Aquaman of them all. "He was number one!"
Despite how much of a joke SF Aquaman was, the final clash was absolutely one of the most badass things of the season. Aquaman pulling all the water and sea life of the Earth's oceans to unleash a last minute desperation attack against SpongeBob. It was fruitless but, I don't think even Comic Aquaman has done something like that. They obviously beefed him up to give him a minor fighting chance but, you have to admit, SF Aquaman went out like a badass.
Honestly SF Aquaman should have fought the Deep!
@@roxtechs That matchup would have been 100% one sided for Aquaman. Yeah, he might be lame in context here but, The Boys characters still don't have amazing feats in comparison to other universes. In universe, they're pretty good but, outside of it, they're lame. Just look at the Seven Battle Royale episode. They killed the Deep off fast because he just doesn't have a whole lot
I think this was basically to give Whiz and Boomstick a break, basically have an episode where the research can be less extensive and they can just have fun with screenwriting
They have an episode like this every season. I call the Joke battles. Examples being Macho Man and Kool Aid Man, Goomba vs Koopa and Deadpool vs Pinkie Pie.

I love how overpowered characters from more "cartoony"/episodic cartoons are when you actually think about or take their abilities seriously.
I mean, they generally share a powerset of super regeneration, absurd strength and speed, teleportation, ignoring the rules of reality in the interest of visual gags, and reality bending, breaking, or in spongebobs case, deleting, yeah it stands to reason nothing short of another cartoon character could defeat them. Even pinkie fucking pie could beat most of dc on her own by way of just ignoring their attacks until they tire themselves out to death or borrowing old discord's magic for a bit to turn them into cupcakes or something.
The more I think about it, SpongeBob is the only one who truly respected this version of Aquaman the most in the end.

As someone who has watched your Death Battle reactions through both sides of the emotional spectrum you've shown us... it feels nice seeing you enjoy a death battle again like this.
Tbh, this is what I wanted to see from y'all: Just experiencing a battle for the work and passion that was put into it. Genuinely, I've replayed your specific reaction multiple times because your laughs and commentary feel like it adds a lot to the video itself. I doubt it'll continue due to the nature of the episode, but I hope that at the very least, it gets you excited for how great DB has become.
This fight was definitely just done for fun and not meant to be taken seriously, Death Battle can have a little bit of fun sometimes, not everything has to be serious. Just sit back relax and watch a beloved cartoon character beat up another cartoon character. There’s usually always a joke match for every season of DB

Yes. It's a joke episode... But one of the key jokes is that SpongeBob, despite what anyone else thinks, is legitimately so much more powerful than Aquaman that a fight between them would be a hilarious stomp. Just because something is a 'joke battle's doesn't make the results illegitimate.
Popeye vs Saitama is quite obviously a joke battle. Anyone with a grade school reading comprehension beyond kindie garten can see that. However, one of the principle jokes of that episode is that, no joke, Popeye really does stomp Saitama so hard he could hit Saitama and turn him and his creator, One, into respectable members of society.

I think that Kestin (LucariosKlaw) did an absolutely awesome job voicing Aquaman. His best work was voicing in the Minecraft Roleplays from one of his close friends Jess Bravura (Aphmau).

This may be the greatest "Joke" Death Battles I have ever seen. I am a huge Spongebob fanm I adored the first 3 seasons and the movie. Lost track of the show ever since besides seeing how watered down and soulless it has become, which is a real bummer. But I still get chuckles watching the first seasons all this time later ;) All the references they threw in and perfectly portrayed were just golden

Unfortunately a lot of them get clowned on for how lopsided they are or the contestants being from famously hated series like MLP. I love those ones though, they make it so interesting to see different iterations of similar characters and how they work. Flash vs Quicksilver was a bit lame though XD. Flash is just broken af :P

Death battle usually has one joke battle a season. Like Deadpool vs Pinkie Pie or Smokey vs Mcgruff. Spongebob vs 60s Aquaman is this season's joke fight.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. MODERN SPONGEBOB IS GOOD. Steven Hillenburg came back after season 9, as well as other established writers like Kaz (who worked Camp Lazlo and Phineas and Ferb). It’s more slapstick-based, but the jokes are there. It’s still solid. Season 10’s Mimic Madness was actually pretty funny and it showed off Tom Kenny’s range. If you want proof Modern Spongebob is good, start with that.

Calling a Death Battle "pointless" is rather harsh. As they have described their process for picking matchups, they collect ideas of characters with similar themes, niches, etc. that would make comparing them in a fight make sense. Then they do a bit of research to make sure that holds up. Then they decide to go along with the matchup. Then they go into more extensive research.
By the time they have sufficient information on how the characters would fare in a fight, they've already sank a lot of time and effort into the chosen characters. And even if a match is clearly lopsided by the end of their research, they are usually still past the point where they actually WANT to showcase the characters and make an interesting fight with them.
And even knowing sufficient information about the characters would make the outcome clear, not everyone who is interested in these matchups know enough about both characters to make that call themselves, nor does that stop people from still wanting to see the fight even knowing who would win anyway.

This was the hardest I laughed at a death battle since hercule vs Dan. I didn’t expect transition with the real mouth moving, and wiz and boomstick trashing Aquaman and wiz losing his mind over spongebob’s feats was great.

It’s funny how in the beginning you mentioned Popeye with SpongeBob, because Tom Kenny voiced Popeye in the leaked footage of the new Popeye movie from Sony.
But the studio shelved it and they released “The Emoji Movie” instead.

They only broke out the toon force to match with other OP characters (One Punch Man and Dead). This is the only time they did it as a joking squash match.

I can defintly confirm that it's kind of based in the spongebob universe. Bikini bottom itself was inspired by a real life testing ground called bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands. It's been subjected to cold war-era nuclear weapons during the time.

I feel like this one was easy to calculate because the next one might be challenging. If not, bloody.
So... I think there's a reason why we haven't really gotten a toon force vs toon force episode. Unless one character's toon force is more consistently shown than the other's, the results would always basically be a tie. And DB has shown that they very, very rarely want fights to end in a tie. I mean, this show is supposed to determine which character would win "once and for all". This is why they often use composites and try to show characters at their absolute best. It leaves as little room for debate as possible (to bad people will still debate the Hell outta almost any matchup. Like, their research ain't perfect, by no means do not get me wrong, but even if it were perfect, people would still debate the results and we all know it lol ) If a fight ends in a tie, well, that still leaves plenty of room for debate as they were unable to determine a full on winner or loser.
Take y'alls example of Popeye vs Spongebob. Certainly, the matchup would be fairer than Popeye vs one punch man and especially fairer than Spongebob vs Super friends aquaman, but both characters have consistently shown the ability to survive being wiped away from existence and can mess with their animators. Pretty sure the matchup would end in a tie as neither could permanently end their opponent. Instead, they chose matchups that had a concise winner and loser that was easy to understand. One was a joke fight, the other was a way to finally give Saitama, who is himself a parody that likely comes with his own vs matchup problems, a real fight for him to enjoy.
Who knows. Maybe I'm wrong and we'll get a full on toon force matchup one day that has a clear winner and loser.

They probably COULD'VE gone with the comics' Aquaman, "Justice League" Aquaman, or even the film version. It still probably would've been one-sided due to SpongeBob's OP abilities, but not to the hilarious degree that we see here.
I believe they did actually think that they'd find some crazy toon force stuff for Aquaman when they started researching and planning the episode, but later realized he just didn't have any, but I may be misremembering. Either way, it's a joke battle now
I think they genuinely expected this to be close when they decided to do this episode, in much the same way Wiz and Boomstick were talking at the start. Noting how weak and pathetic SpongeBob can be at times and how DC characters are usually powerhouses but it quickly became clear the dynamic was very different in reality.
