You're Thinking about Climate Change WRONG!

- With so much talk about climate change, it's easy to fall into unhelpful - and unhealthy - thinking about the crisis. But a lot of the ideas we come across can be misleading at best, and hold us back from doing what matters. So I'm here to help get your thinking straight!

happy end of 2021, you wonderful CliMates! so happy to have this community, and can't wait to see what we build in 2022.
@@magiccloud3074 I'm so happy to hear it - thank you.
@@magiccloud3074 it's definitely a topic I'd like to look into more - think it's very hyped and really valuable, but I'd love to look at the limits of what it can achieve too.
But scientists and engineers will fix it and there nothing humanity can do to stop them. Not that that will stop them from trying.
"it's never too late to make a difference" love it. keep putting out that positive message in the face of despair. - Enspair - Give Hope!
I think the space between despair and hope is action. I know there is a problem and I am hopeful that we can fix it - so the only logical thing to do from there is to try.
my thoughts exactly, Katrina. both emotions can lead to inaction (perhaps why both are promoted so much!), but the vast grey area between is where real progress is made
"Hope is only equal to our courage".
Adam, I’ve been with you for… gosh… years ? Your videos are such a treat every time, funny and so impactful at the same time. Thank you for keeping hope alive ! It is so precious to keep up optimism and actions going. Many thanks 🙏
Who's thinking wrong?
Since COp26, I learned that the Arctic is warming 4 times faster, that global terrestrial photosynthesis is in rapid decline expected to drop by 50% withing 2 to 3 decades.
And, "the all-important Thwaites Glacier ice shelf in Antarctica may be as little as three years away from collapse, threatening to release a river of ice that would drastically raise sea levels."
I also learned that capturing CO2 from the atmosphere will draw out the CO2 in the oceans since it's a sort of pressure equilibrium state.
Oh, and because the difference of temperature between the warming troposphere and the cooling stratosphere accelerates the convection process partly responsible for the increase in more extreme storms, but I've known that for a while as it's very basic physics no one ever mentions.
Yes, I left a like :)
Happy New Year, Adam and thanks for your videos!
I don't remember when or via which route I first happened upon your channel - sometime way back when for sure!
well I'm glad you tracked it down!
Nicely balanced, Adam. Glad you skewered that activist meme that it's 100 or so evil corporations who are to blame by mentioning that the billions of ordinary people who purchase their products must bear their fair share of the responsibility too! :)
I *do* think it's a useful stat. it's just using it to claim that somehow individuals (or small companies, or whatever) are powerless... is not helpful..
@@ClimateAdam I think what some extremist movers and shakers are using it for is more 'sinister' than that. I think it's a politically manipulative meme, not a scientific one, as it is a half-truth with words seemingly chosen to mislead. They kind of insinuate that all these big corporations are creating the vast majority of emissions, thus trying to engender a belief in their targetted followers that it's only the big corporations that are responsible and that even if the 'powerless billions' are aware that they are creating emissions directly, this highly misleading stat makes them assume they must be so small that they're almost irrelevant. The meme tends to 'immunise' the people against accepting that their Scope 2 and 3 emissions are very significant, or indeed anything to do with their purchasing decisions and lifestyles. I don't think it's an innocent or useful 'stat' - I think it's a crafted piece of propaganda designed to sway the public's minds - probably towards 'smashing capitalism'.
Did none of y'all even notice that's my face at 6.59?? I really wasted half an hour in Photoshop for nothing?!
CliMate from India! I found your channel few months ago. Since then, I realised that I'm not a exception to get inspired by your insightful explanations which is impactful indeed!
I loved this video! We need some love and support and sharing of ideas aside from facts and serious talks about this messy situation…
I am here since about a year. I really like the way you approach the topic and I have watched most of your videos so far. Thank u !
Love from Barcelona 💕
CliMates love it! I share your videos with about 150 college students a semester. You articulate the issues so well.
woah - that's so lovely of you!
"Despair is the mark of the privileged."
SCA-ji's words never hold truer for me than now.
Does it feel as though it's too late?
Climate activists, at least the ones who build and run high-profile organizations, have always believed that the make-or-break part of saving the world is building and running effective organizations which, in order to be effective, have to do fundraising well and generate a sense of urgency. The unfortunate implication is that the climate activists who matter have never shown any sign of actually caring about the climate, only about building organizations and appealing to sentiment -- because in their minds, it's the same thing.
The noticeable result is that every year's rhetoric looks the same: 'This is the moment of truth. If we act now, we can just barely keep warming to X.X degrees by 20XX. But it's (all caps) urgent (/all caps), three exclamations points. We have to act (font-size equals really-big) now (/ font-size).' The numbers aren't what matters, so they can change every year or two. What matters is 'urgent' and 'now'.
But that means it's always too late, by the previous decade's rhetoric; and we always have years to spare, by the the rhetoric of a decade later. By any analysis not directed at fundraising and organization-building but at, well, analysis, we've known since the 1980s that we were going to put enough carbon into the air to have multi-trillion-dollar repercussions, under any plausible scenario for how public policy might respond. We've always known that taking some of that carbon out would be heinously expensive compared to not putting it in, but a wonderful bargain compared to leaving it there and just suffering the consequences. In other words, we've known for over three decades that net zero isn't a meaningful endpoint. We've known that we're going to need _large net negative_. But it's always been heresy to say that, because "we should emit less in the first place" and "we're going to have to take some out" don't fit on the same bumper sticker.
I make a video to discuss exactly this: ruclips.net/video/RoQRkmRjz38/видео.html
After watching a whole bunch of your videos, I think probably this is the best-presented I've seen so far. This is probably precisely because it doesn't do too much. No fancy fx, just a clear message, delivered cogently.
Hi Adam I enjoy your channel. It is so important. I am living and working in Cambodia since several years working with farmers and climate change here really makes farmers struggle and it is not a future question for them
Perfect video. Just read my local newspaper editorials today and felt utter dispair seeing how many people turn climate change into a political issue (USA left vs. right), or even more dispiriting are the people commenting that climate change can't be stopped by humans because God controls everything. (Bible versus included... Ugh.)
I can't believe I just discovered your channel! You manage to communicate climate related things without making me want to roll over and cry. 😁
well, that's one of the best compliments I've had in a while!
can't remember when I started watching you on youtube. I only recently started watching any youtube material, aside from links people sent me (I prefer to read my information). But, I was following you for quite a while on Twitter, which is why I tracked you down when I decided to check what youtube had to offer.
I always wonder how many people make it over from the bird app to here..!
Ever since i was a kid the idea of CC has been taught as something we need to fight. And yet it easily feels like little to nothing is ever being done.
I just changed my major from film to Ecology. Im so over waiting for the systems to come online. Individual action only feels like it reaches so far.
that's great to hear you're pursuing something you're passionate about - and I hope it makes you feel more empowered. we need as many people on this team as possible.
Found your channel about 6 months ago. Really great videos, and you make all the science easy to understand, with a balanced view for us muggles.
ah thanks so much Vincent - and glad you tracked me down!
Excellent summary of the conflicting ball of emotions coalesced and driven by climate change.
thanks Tom... it really is so fiddly untangling all these feelings
Adam wanted to know how long we've been watching his channel. This is my first watch. RUclips recommend it, so I clicked. But I am not a CO2 alarmist, quite the opposite. RUclips must have altered its algorithm again, damn. Anyway, my first impression : Is that guy Gotye's younger brother (song Someone That I Used To Know)? My unasked for advice in times of manufactured Co(2) and Co(Vid) alarmism : I know it's a convenient point of focus outside of yourself, and psychologically satisfying to project one's anxiety thereupon. Meanwhile the world slips into a paradigm of world governance where the common person increasingly becomes a slave to the whims of an unelected global technocracy that is squeezing the balls of traditional nationhood, local governance and accountability. Nations are more and more indebted to global corporations that are more and more enriched. If you think these corporations have set human and environmental good before their financial bottom line and urge to dominate, think again. Thanks for reading.
Hello and welcome to the channel! Just so you can put my information in context: I am sadly unrelated to Gotye; I am a doctor in Atmospheric physics from Oxford.
@@ClimateAdam Thank you! You have to admit, with your looks and the pithy, staccato music in the background, Gotye and his song were bound to come to mind.
A moment of Zen : the approach of winter reminds us that we are still in an Ice Age, albeit in a relatively short and warm interval called an interglacial.
Wish I could upvote this more than once. Thanks for making these videos. This one resonated a lot with me. Also, the pandemic always took a backseat in my mind among the things I worry about, but then again I'm an introvert, so I may be in minority on that subject.
aw thank you Distant Mind. for me, I think about climate change in parallel with the pandemic... two things that make the world harder for those who already struggle the most. and, yeah, I think introverted and extroverted people have had very different responses... not going to lie, I've found moments very tough, and I've been lucky to be in a place where heavy isolation has rarely been necessary.
Your also a minority for not wanting to cause as much climate change as possible.
Thanks. I've been listening over a year.
Any plans on uploading to Nubula?
I have been here since you popped up in Kurtis's channel.
nah no plans so far... what would you say the advantages are..?
@@ClimateAdam, I don't know much from the creator side. Maybe more control? No idea.
But for me personally (and for several others) it's about supporting creators directly than through a mega corp in between. It also helps that there is no recommendation engine in Nebula which can zap me in mindlessly for hours and am avoiding the advertising model entirely.
i watched a vid the otherday (power of ten?) the conclusion being that with a magnitude of ten, an individual can reach/influence the entire human population by the actions they take.
That the ideal cross over between action and influence was to work in groups and communities between village n city-sized and locally.
If u havent already, join ur local eco-group, pin a poster in ur window (as well as being politically engaged to get the ball rolling faster)
Action that is tangible that you can see the direct effect of is one of the best ways i know to deal with hopelessness and powerlessness
absolutely - I think it's so easy to feel our actions alone make no difference, but we forget that our actions don't stand alone, they snowball and potentially - maybe - reach the kind of tipping point we need to get a handle on this crisis...
This video was really helpful, thank you! I’ve only found this channel a few months ago but I’m happy to be here 😊
I'm happy you're here too, Kathryn! welcome!
@@ClimateAdam thank you!!
6:45 lol that was hilarious. It is a great way to describe the problem we are having here xD
wanna see it acted out??
ruclips.net/video/RoQRkmRjz38/видео.html
I have only recently begun watching these. You are very good and a lot of fun . . . thanks.
thanks so much - welcome to the channel!
I love ur videos it make me feel hope, sometimes. Greetings from Argentina ✨💕
that's really wonderful to hear, lujan. I hope you keep getting lots out of the channel for a long time to come!
Started watching this year. Really enjoy your videos
thanks so much Steel! I really enjoy your flag.
I have been watching the videos for about several days! But I'm so thankful that there are people like you!!💜💜
thanks so much - really glad you value the channel!
Remember to push for changes but don't blame yourself. "the top 1% wealthiest individuals emit about 110 tons of carbon emissions per year, but more significantly, the top 0.01% emit a shocking 2,530 tonnes and the top 0.1% emit about 467 tonnes." The ultra rich have significantly more power to make a change but choose to get private jets and yachts and be wasteful. We need systemic changes that create a more green just world.
I started watching a few days ago when I needed this the most. Thank you.
Ah I'm so glad to hear you found the channel at an important time. Welcome, Darren!
Your intro hit me so hard lol. All and nothing to say. YUUUP
normally you can't shut me up, so it's been a weird time..!
People like you give me hope.
i've probably been watching your videos for half a year now? great videos adam
ah thanks so much Athena - and thanks for watching!
i only discovered you last week n subbed from watching ur first vid n checking out the titles in ur previous vids. i like ur style of presentation and the content you bring.
It constantly surprises me why there's been no focus on adapting our current cars, like the catalytic converter in my childhood which enabled lead petrol cars to burn unleaded petrol. Seems a waste of time and minerals to replace an entire car every time in 20-odd years, instead of adapting the ones we have to at least hybrid status, here and now. Solutions that are out of the price range of 90% in wealthy countries are going to take too long imo
Think I started watching you after your video with Zentouro, about 2 years ago :)
In a way scientists and engineers have solved climate change... those solutions just aren't carried out enough.
Great video!
my first ever collab! was so happy and touched that she reached out. we've been discussing a sequel for some time, but have struggled to pin down what we'd chat about.
Same thing, I think I discovered you with this one. At the time of my awakening, where I was subscribed to lots of climate channels at once. I have been watching all your videos since then. Thanks a lot for what you do
Been watching your videos for about two years. Just getting my thermal underwear layers on so I need little or no heating today.
Keep it bro👏. from india with love💖
thanks Thiyanesh! from germany with love 😻
I needed this. Thanks!
I have been watching your videos since late 2019.
yay - happy two year birthday, in that case!
Great work Been watching about 1.5 years keep it up
omg I'm so deep in climate that I saw the number "1.5" and immediately started stressing about degrees of global warming
You just got a subscriber. I'm scared, and some days it's debilitating. But I've cut down on meat, I have a job that's only a ten minute drive from where I'm staying, and I should look into donating blood more. I might not be able to get to the big rallies, but it's something...
that's great Jordan - it's important we do what we can, but don't beat ourselves up for what we can't... this is a systematic problem after all, not our fault as individuals. that said, there are lots of ways to raise your voice beyond rallies, whether that's speaking with elected officials, or even bringing climate change into more conversations with those around you. it is scary, but we're making progress, and each step in the right direction saves lives.
Thank you Adam.
thanks for watching, Renata!
Would we even know if it was too late to do anything? Can a society be deluding itself?
what all the science points to is that the more we emit the hotter the world gets and the worse the consequences. it's never too late to stop this process.
ruclips.net/video/RoQRkmRjz38/видео.html
Omg Adam great video!
Dr Adam, I love your videos! And it honestly makes my lil heart swell seing someone I look up to use the same pronouns as I do
thanks so much, Silver - that means a huge amount ❤️
2014, but only subscribed recently
woah - good to have an OG CliMate here!
I have been watching you since Our Changing Climate mentioned you
ah great - glad you found your way over from Charlie!
You’re awesome dude.
you too, CD!
Thoughts on the view that 1.5 degrees is locked in?
my thoughts have evolved slightly in the past few months (especially with the latest IPCC report), but this still captures most of my thinking:
ruclips.net/video/RoQRkmRjz38/видео.html
We're already over 1.5 c. The original baseline was 1770, then as it approached 1.5c the ippc changed it to 1870. There isn't anyway out of this. It's already baked in.
The response is the same either way - we have to keep working at reducing emissions.
@@tommclean7410 I'm all for it. Good luck convincing 8 billion people to live in mud shacks, not traveling any farther than they can walk, and to stop making babies. It would be the only way to preserve any part of humanity on a finite planet.
Like most things in the world that has been shown time and time again over the ages....slow is fast.
Love ur vids!
thank yooou Cypress!
A lot of people care but there's a lot to do.
so well put! and I think it's all too easy for us to forget the beginning of that sentence...
Alarmism: Haven't you heard Al Gore?: we will fucking solve the problem: in fact we have already! No need to lose sleep.
🤯
🍍
First! :)
Yeah cause that's real. 🙈🙉🙊
LOL
2014 (;
woah - amazing to have so many CliMate OGs still around (other than just my parents, of course)
What lives are being saved?
I felt that the fight against climate change suffered a major setback when Greta Thunberg came out in support of the dismantling of a wind farm in Norway.
Haha well get ready for more progress. Starting next year I will pledge to single handedly take out 200Gt of carbon emmisions out of the atmosphere. You ask how and when will I achieve this goal? I say thats rude don't you trust me? I WILL DELIVER I PROMISE, BTW NEXT YEAR I WILL BE BACK WITH EVEN BIGGER PLANS!
What we need is a massive drop in population.
You really don’t want that in a timescale of less than a hundred years
@@kevoreilly6557 Something that we as a species can survive. A birth lottery. 1 million births per year. The natural death rate would stay the same at approx. 50 million per year. Do the math and you can accurately predict when we'll bring the population down to 1 mil.
