Meitei Pung Cholom is a traditional dance form that originates from the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. It is one of the most exhilarating and vibrant components of the Manipuri classical dance repertoire. Pung Cholom is distinctive because it features the use of the Manipuri drum known as "Pung," and it is characterized by its lively and rhythmic movements.
Pung Cholom dance in this video includes acrobatic elements, with dancers executing spins, jumps, and other physically demanding movements.
The Meitei Pung Cholom dance requires considerable stamina and agility, and skilled performers often display impressive feats during the traditional dance performance. The Pung Cholom is a unique classical dance of Manipur. Pung Cholom has influenced the more elaborate Manipuri classical dance form known as Ras Lila. Pung Cholom dance may be performed by men or women and is usually a prelude to the Ras Lila.
Pung Cholom, with its energetic drumming and vibrant choreography, reflects the cultural richness and dynamism of Manipuri traditions. This was shot at the annual Hornbill festival held in Kisama Heritage Village near Khima in Nagaland.
