At 12:00, I *immediately* said "that's what she said" 😄 And you're right, I don't have a girlfriend 🤷♀️ But seriously, thanks for the video! I have a project neck ('66 Kalamazoo KG-1) which will benefit from this knowledge.
Thanks for the education Matt and perfect timing. I’m about to install these SD91on a Strat style neck that already have 10mm holes drilled. I bought a set of 10mm conversion bushings thinking thats all I need. What you just demonstrated makes me wonder if my plan will work. I didn’t realize the hole should be stepped. Should I make 10mm dowel with a 1/4” hole to support the post at the base or can I rely on the bushing and tuner screws only? If my math is correct I’m going to need a 7/16” length dowel to fill the void. I think that just answered my question.Lol but would appreciated your confirmation. Thank you for any help and Happy Holidays to your family.
Stewmac sells "conversion bushings" that fit the fit the 10mm hole in the front. You will not have the tight fit of the 1/4 inch hole in the back but the tuner will fit properly. The only way to get the tighter fit is to plug and redrill
Trying to work with a camera is the bane of our existence. lol It looks easy until you have to do it yourself. I’d call that a piloted counter bore or spot facer. I use them for various tasks.
Unless you're a luthier, or have two dozen guitars that need reaming, don't waste the money. Stew is rich enough. $36! LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣 November 5th, I got a QWORK ⅛"-½" tapered reamer, for less than $6, delivered, from Amazon. (They're cheaper now.) It's a fine tool; very sharp, doesn't tear out, gouge, or stick. I used some blue painter's tape, as a gauge for depth, and four more pieces to cover the finish, to prevent tear out. (Didn't need the tape. Just a precaution.) Started from the top side, went half way, then did the same from the backside. Machine heads, fit perfectly. (Black, and gold D'Addario auto trims bought for me by a benefactor of the Veteran's Administration. TY! TY!) The ferrules needed only a thumb, to press them in. They're very solidly built tuners. The posts are solid. I then moved to the control cavity. I changed my painter's tape guide, taped the holes, in the body. A few twists later, I was finished. Within fifteen minutes I had both the peg holes, and pot holes reamed, for 4 Bourns imperial push/pulls. First time I've touched a guitar, in 45 years. I'm quite chuffed. Just waiting for a set of Probuckers, and a P94, for the middle. (Both with black bobbins, gold screws/slugs, and open gold covers.) Lilith (my "Chibson Black Beauty with a Chigsby") will be complete. (I already fit a roller nut & bridge.) Yes, I'm a Boomer. Yes, I'm cheap. I prefer frugal though. 😉
Good timing.....finishing a Les Paul Junior Double Cut build over the holidays and need to ream the existing holes to fit the bushing!!
@@mikeadams4605 that's a great coincidence brotherman
Thanks Matt. Work smarter , not harder
@@MichaelCummings-ry3pb thank you my friend
That looks a lot more accurate, neater job than the way I have done it with a tapered reamer.
@@GosselinCreative it's a pretty slick setup
Thanks Matt! Great video, merry Christmas to everyone in the shop. Best to you and yours!

Yes, these are great. I bought one early in my guitar-building journey. It makes the job so easy. Cheers!
Thanks. I don't think I've seen that tool before, but I'll definitely get one.
@@64_Commuter they come in lots of sizes too Mike so you can get the exact right one for the job
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights on guitar building.
Great tool. Center on center.
@@donaldfisher8556 it's so much easier than trying to drill from each side that's for sure
Most cool Matt! Wasn't aware of this Stew-Mac tool.
Thanks I like Detail vedios!!😮

You would probably be okay but if you wanted to try and fill them and redrill them that would be a cool thing too
This is a great reamer.

The bushing-drill aint to be used with Fender tunings, right!? Like GOTOH and Klueson… That being pressed into the wood with smal tolerenses..
@@fredde328 these come in lots of sizes and you can match them to the exact tuners you are going to use
What if you alreeds have aa 10.5 hole?
