    Thanks! I find it odd that passwords for users are not set up at the same time a user is created.

    Passwords in etc/shadow are encrypted? Why is it encrypted instead of hashed? The system could take your password attempt, hash it, and check if the hash is correct. That's what web servers do.

      Only way I would suggest is using something like NFS? Is this what you mean?
