I thought this was a joke. But today I tried to make a doctor's appointment and they give me one for NOVEMBER!!! (it's August.)

Hmm, have I just slipped through the cracks of the German Arzttermin bureaucracy as a clueless foreigner? When I was studying for a semester in Hamburg, I got tonsillitis and was seen immediately by a doctor with my student insurance.
I literally just walked in into UKE with my insurance papers and although I had some communication issues (the nurse staff barely spoke English, I barely spoke German, and my sore throat could barely make any noise), it was more or less a pretty efficient experience.
I paid no copay, all my prescription meds cost a grand total of 5 euros, and to this day, is my go-to glowing review of the German healthcare system whenever healthcare or Germany is brought up.
You just watched a terrible attempt of being funny on a stereotype that Germans have about their healthcare system. ;-)
+June Nam it very much depends on where you are and where you go June Nam. Obviously you are always been treated in an urgent case, especially at hospitals. The German health care System is generally very good. But if you are looking for appointments with special doctors, especially in big cities it can be sometimes very tricky. I am suffering from a serious disease now and I needed to see an eye doctor in Berlin. It was impossible to find any appointment within even a month. I ended up getting an appointment through friends only, at a place that is an hour away from my home. I am thankful I had those friends cause otherwise it would have been quite depressing to call at even more places and being denied. It was a very new experience to me cause if you do not live in any of those big cities and are not looking for a certain specialist you wouldn't even ever encounter such problems - and I personally haven't had such issues before I moved to Berlin and became sick. So it depends :)
But Tobias is right, here we intended to exaggerate a bit too and the scene would have been just too short If everything would have perfectly worked out right at the beginning 😂

@Cari Du kannst deine Krankenkasse benachrichtigen, wenn du keinen Termin innerhalb von 4 Wochen kriegst, soweit ich weiß. Vielleicht bietet deine Krankenkasse einen Terminservice an. Manche Kassen haben das.

I heard such a story recently for German healthcare service: A woman is pregnant and wants to give birth in a better hospital, asks for an appointment, and the answer is: "All places are full until the next year, you have to make an appointment 2 years before giving birth."

was ist die Versicherungskarte? und woher kann ich sie bekommen? wenn jemand sehr krank ist und es keinen Termin gibt, was passiert? Soll er auf freien Termin warten obwohl er sehr krank ist und nicht warten kann?! was macht der Patient in diesem Fall, bitte?
Die Versichertenkarte ist eine Plastikkarte (so groß wie eine Kreditkarte) auf der deine Versichertendaten gespeichert sind. Du bekommst sie von deiner Krankenkasse. Wer krank ist, geht zu seinem Hausarzt und bekommt dort in der Regel am gleichen oder nächsten Tag einen Termin. Für Akut- und Notfälle gibt es die Notfallambulanz an Krankenhäusern oder man ruft 112.

I didn't understand one thing. Say, I have a public health insurance and need immediate medical attention. But what if I don't get an appointment in a day or two and instead after 4 weeks?
By the time I get the appointment I might have recovered already.

Doctors appointment in germnay is a big joke.
Sind wirklich die Kassenpatienten anderes als Privaten in Deutschland behandelt? Oder war das nur Spaß?
*Werden Kassenpatienten wirklich anders als Privatpatienten in Deutschland behandelt?
Ja und nein. Kassenpatienten erhalten die medizinisch notwendige Behandlung, die sie brauchen. Jeglicher Luxus (z.B. Einzelzimmer, Chefarztbehandlung) und medizinisch nicht notwendige Behandlungen (z.B. Muskelimplantate) werden von gesetzlichen Krankenkassen nicht übernommen. Das sind Leistungen, die man selbst zahlen muss. Da private Krankenkassen oft auch mehr Leistungen bezahlen als gesetzliche Krankenkassen, kann man als Arzt oder Krankenhaus mehr Geld mit Privatpatienten verdienen, weshalb sie bei Terminen bevorzugt werden.
In der Regel bekommst du bei einem Hausarzt (Allgemeinmediziner) entweder am gleichen oder nächsten Tag einen Termin. Bei einem Facharzt (z.B. Radiologe, Urologe etc.) ist das oft etwas anders, da dort keine Notfall- oder Akutpatienten behandelt werden. Deswegen arbeiten diese Praxen mit Terminen.
