Jacobaea vulgaris is a species of flowering plant of the aster family.
Common names include ragwort, common ragwort, stinking willie, tansy ragwort, benweed, St. James-wort, stinking nanny/ninny/willy, staggerwort, dog standard, cankerwort, stammerwort.
It is usually a biennial, and sometimes a perennial herbaceous plant, reaching a height of 30 to 100 centimeters. In the first year, a rosette of leaves about 20 centimeters long is formed. The leaves are lyre-shaped, pinnate. The stem with inflorescences develops only in the second year. The yellow flower heads are approximately 15 to 25 millimeters in diameter. The seeds are crowned with bangs.
The plant is poisonous, which is due to the content of various poisonous alkaloids in it, which can lead to liver damage with subsequent damage to the central nervous system. The plant is dangerous for horses, cattle, and poultry.
