  • Climbing skins require a bit of care. With these tips you can make your skins last at least 5 years. Learn about skin storage, skin repair, and installing skins. Protecting the glue on your skins is the key to prolonging their longevity. Keep them clean, and safe from debris when they are not on your skis. Before you apply them your skis, make sure you did a good wax scraping so the wax does not come off and contaminates the skin's glue. And always put them on when the ski is cold. Ideally, out them on at the trailhead and not at home.

    0:09 Installing Skins
Never put your skins on your skis when the skis are warm. The bond will be too strong and it will be difficult to remove the skin from the ski in the cold. Always put your skins onto a cold ski.
    2:07 Drying Skins.
When you get back from your laps, hang your skins to dry in a clean, dust free environment. Keep them away from a direct heat source, or else the glue will literally run off.
    3:15 Storing Skins.
You can use the skin saver for summer storage, but it is not mandatory. Fold them, glue to glue, put them in the storage bag and drop them in a big storage bin with your other touring gear.
    4:35 Repair Kit
Skins can break in the backcountry. Be prepared. Pack a spare ski strap, replacement hardware, installation tools, and duct tape! Everything goes into a little nylon bag and travels in your backpack.

Had my Völkl Nanuq skins for 9 or 10 years now and they're still just as good. Never done anything with them apart from always using mesh when they're not on the skis.

Storing skins sealed in a bag in a chest freezer over the summer can reduce glue oxidation significantly.

I have a few pairs of skin at various ages. One is old and always leaves a lot of residue on the skis. I've tried to revive the glue but nothing worked. I'm thinking about doing a DIY reglue job. I wonder if you could do a video about that. I'm going to use the BD gold label adhesive. Thanks!

i just glue them together with each other. then none of the glue is exposed. had a old pair that i kept folded for a bit too long, and that one seperated in the fold. so now i hang mine up by the tip hook

Can you still show how to use the skin saver, I got one with my G3. Do I just sandwich them and roll?

Question, IS THERE SUCH THING AS, "ADDING MORE GLUE TO THE SKINS "

    • @brianharder7714

Yes, Iron some newspaper on with a hot iron and slowly peel while hot, moving the iron down the skin as you go. This will remove a layer of contaminated and oxidized glue. Sometimes that is enough. You can also add a thin layer of fresh glue over that. Typically just do the first and last 20cm or so unless it's really bad.
