I sensed a lump in Tom's throat & a tear in his eye when Dad was saying they will have to go, shows the passion, love & care Tom has for his animals.
I've recently discovered this channel. I'm literally watching every single episode with huge respect and total appreciation of what Tom and his Dad do.
One of the many reasons I love your videos Tom, you show everything, the ups and the downs! You show people it's not a fairy tale where you look after the cute animals, you take great pride and care in looking after everything to the best of your ability. Unfortunately things don't always work out but you've made the hard decision to cut your losses and move them on to the farm shop. It would be so easy to hide it and tell people you've sold them, I've got a lot of respect for you for showing the hard decisions!
People have to understand that you're a Farming community, yes it's hard when you name an animal and have bonded with them. Sometimes the hardest choice of letting go for the better.

When Ginger Warrior said "We've got 'em inside they're not going out again" that got me. I was already thinking to my self: well it's a farm the cows are either for milk or for beef, but man the suddenness was more than I expected.
It hit me too. Reality
That’s the instinct that kept him in food production and delivery over the years . 👍🏻
Lingering with a decision always makes it harder. Better to decide and move on. What other decision could he make that wouldn't eventually lead to the same conclusion? I feel for Tom and the Ging though; farming isn't easy. Especially if you care.
I can understand why they do it but what I don’t understand is why they name them. Once you name them it becomes personal.
I think that’s why it makes it harder.
This is a working farm not a petting zoo. I know all animal lovers, myself included, come here to enjoy watching the beasts as much as the people but it is what it is. Factor in the added expense of keeping these cattle and add to that the extra demands Highlands create, destructive and dangers to people and other livestock due to horns... They can't afford too many, as show animals.

nice one minute! Love your videos! EDIT: I volunteered on a farm in Scotland one vacation for no reason other than I enjoyed petting the sheep, and ended up really loving herding the sheep on the ATV. Your videos remind me of that and that's why I like them :D

At the end of the day you are a working farm not a pet farm so sending the ladies to the chopping block is probably the best option. And as the guy with the ginger mooooostache said it will be beautiful tinder heifer beef. 👌

I'm completely gutted, that was so hard to watch. What a huge disappointment after all your hard work and care. My heart broke when your dad said they wouldn't be going out again. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs so honestly.
Sounds like you are improving your herd by clearing out the infertile ones. It's always rough when you have to cull. It is part of the business your in. Thanks for sharing and look forward to your next video.

Thanks for showing this Tom. As someone who deeply appreciates the hard work farmers do, but knows very little about the practical aspects of it, this was good to see and learn about the realities of how we end up with quality food on our plates and the work farmers do to ensure that. We could all see the disappointment on your face when Andy said Toffee wasn't in calf and that reflects the man you are, because your disappointment was about more than just the lack of a future calf. It is reassuring knowing that the food we eat it is produced by people like you.
Tom share your pain but your Dad, as all Dads, are usually right new life is just around the corner.
It speaks to how well you care for your animals that you're quite disappointed about Flora and Toffee. That said, the Ginger man is right - you've got to make good business decisions, and it costs a bundle to keep a non-producing cow. Looking forward to seeing Minnie & Harriet's little Angus crosses.

Over two decades removed from my time on our family farm, I still remember some of our favorite milkers...and some not so favorites LOL!

If the highlands are going, can we get a butchering video? Not the graphic type but maybe show where they go and have your butcher explain the process that they will go through. I think it would be really educational and interesting to know what will happen to the cows once they go.
I think this is a good idea in general, but there were so few of the highlands that I'm sure there are many viewers like me that have become attached to them as individuals, I thought of them as more like pets that visitors to the shop would enjoy seeing. Even though I realize it is a farm and I eat beef, I'm already sad that they have to go. It can feel very personal - even down to knowing that these cuts of beef in the shop are Flora and these are Toffee. Some are named after the Royal Family. This might be a better video idea for some of the other cattle. It's also sad because they are probably fertile but Neptune might have been subfertile because of his foot.
@@SquidandCatAdventures I totally agree. Because of the following these cows obviously have on this channel, personally I would have one more attempt at getting them in calf, just in case it was a problem with Neptune. Last year they know it was a problem with the bull.
@@shishkebab5306 well you don't do that it makes you go broke if they don't breed they go rule 1 we raise beef cattle and if you keep inbred animals your wasting feed and limiting your ability to have a profit send them and hope for better next year because even if they breed they apparently have a defect and you dont want the genes past high fertility and high production means profit

Sad to hear about Flora and Toffee - however that is life, and honestly it is quite a fair end. They're costing money and they have to give back somehow.
Its because we gave them names thats why its sad. The beef cows nobody is bothered apart from vegetarians. Hope the baby calfs next year are not named.
You shouldn’t be giving them names n getting emotionally attached to an animal . It is a farm not a petting zoo 🤩😜😎

And I am sure they are slaughtered as humanely as possible. Knowing that does give some comfort.
You can hear the emotion in both Tom’s voice and the Ginger Warrior’s. Always a tough decision to make, but I think it was a good call.

@@TomPembertonFarmLife it’s often said in farming “you can kill animals with kindness” Flora and Toffee by your own admission is in really good condition, good grass and cake, whereas in their “normal” environment, they would be grazing rough pasture in the most harshest of climates with nowhere near the same level of care.
Over fat cows are the most difficult of all to get in calf.
Neptune despite his lameness issues was with them for over 12 months and got other herd mates in calf. He had 17 opportunities to get them in calf, so it’s highly unlikely he’s the issue.
I would really like to have seen a full blood profile analysis of Flora and Toffee at the time they were suppose to go in calf, to see what metabolic issues they were facing then, that prevented them from going in calf.

you can see why the big farms that hold their own bulls do a full health and foot check 3 months before they go in with the cows - its is a shame the girls are not all in calf but this is the 2nd time for the youngest 2 and so they have to go - Highland meat as a specialty item for Christmas maybe limited stock and people can pre order - I hope you are thinking about getting in 10-20 of the milk cows in that have been in with Neptune as if they are also only 50% breed you are going to need another bull and quickly
Maybe a bit early to write off Neptune just yet. These 2 heifers weere barren with the highland bull too..
So sorry to hear about Flora & especially Toffee, they will be missed.. but 50% is better than none & you are great people and did you best for them!

Thanks for sharing this harder topic, it is reality. Not easy but true.
Not to disagree with your plans, but Highlands do mature more slowly than other breeds and I think, being born in the spring of 2017, both Flora and Toffee are just now coming ready to breed. That they are not pregnant may be just that they need another month or two with Neptune. As they are just on the farm to attract attention, you don't need more than 4 to cycle through the shop pasture so yes, some have to go, either through the shop or sell them as open. And, since they are purebreds with a pedigree, they may be worth more on the hoof than wrapped in cellophane.
Just a thought, if Neptune had a bad foot, and he isn't on top form, maybe he only got the older two because they're experienced and are happy to stand still. Where as a the younger two, who have never been bred might not be so patient, especially an injured bull. Just a thought.
This is one of my favourite TP videos. Why? Because it highlights the bond and emotion good framers have with their animals. You could see instantly what a negative result on the PD meant to Tom P by the look on his face when he received the bad news. Hard decisions are made on the farm on a daily basis, if the farm doesn't at the least break even at best turn a profit a farm doesn't function. Farming is tough! Farmers are caring, nurturing and hard working people. They want nothing but the best for their animals, yet the harsh reality is it's a business, and The Ginger Guy with the Moustache has accepted this lesson a long time ago. I felt for you Tom when you didn't get the desired result. Chin up. The highs and lows of farming with livestock.

Literally stumbled upon your videos yesterday (your cows getting a brush for the first time) and I've been binge watching ever since! All your cows are just adorable but I do have to say that your highland cows (especially the babies) are especially cute!!!

As a meat eater and animal lover, I am glad and thankful this is a decision I’ll likely never face. Recently discovered your videos and there absolutely fab, been hooked on farming for a while now and so glad I stumbled across your page. Thank you for the great content and taking excellent care of your animals, watched the cow brush yesterday was in stitches at your excitement but honestly so good to see.
Totally understand the hesitation, but it is what it is about, they either produce calves or they produce meat. It is great you have the outlet for the meat. Respect for the loving and caring that goes into raising your animals.
Great news that 2 of the Highland are in calf, but also such a shame for you all 😢 to have to make the descision you have done.

When you said they have to go I thought you meant you was gonna sell them on. But it’s understandable, they’ve had their best life possible at the farm and you treat them all well, it’ll give you more room for upbringing the others when they calve

Our Hereford bull had a poisoned foot which made him that he can not walk from one side to other side of the shed which his about 15 m long
We have about 60 Herefords but we don’t specialize in them but more in horses
We couldn’t get a foot trimmer for 2 months because of COVID
All we could do is give him pain killers
He is about 7-8 years old and we pregnancy scanned all our cows and every single one was in calf 25! He is a very friendly bull and we are obviously lucky to have him

Sad news regarding Toffee and Flora, you could see that you were devastated, it showed in your eyes, but that's life, we all bond with animals and pets in our lives. Sad times though....

I know some people here will be shocked to learn what happens to unproductive farm livestock - it eventually becomes profitable deadstock. That's how it's always been. Remember the nursery rhyme, "This little piggy went to market"? It wasn't going to buy a new straw bonnet, it was going to meet a butcher with a hammer.
I'm not a vegan or an anti-meat activist - I'm an omnivore, so I'll eat meat and fish and poultry and veg, but only if I know how it's been sourced. I don't eat 'junk' meat or anything from big supermarkets because I know how their suppliers operate. It's a business, and I think animals deserve better than that. They're not plants, despite what many people would like to think.
I avoid 'mechanically recovered animal protein' and the sort of unrecognisable processed goo that gets used to make cheap meat products. No sentient creature deserves to be turned into pink slurry. If you're going to eat a cow, show it some respect: look it in the eye, kill it quickly, painlessly, and with compassion, and don't pretend that it grew on a tree. Remember what it was. It deserves no less.
But I'm skint, so what do I do? Well, I do without. For the last 12 years I've had an annual income of around £800 [yes, eight-hundred pounds], so I can't afford to eat meat at all. I'm driven by finance not ethics.
If I can't buy a proper, recognisable joint from a small, local abattoir that's happy to let individual customers see EXACTLY how they operate - including what happens on the killing floor to every animal that comes through their doors - I'll go without.
I don't want to have anything to do with huge commercial slaughterhouses where men do a dirty job as fast as possible for money and the animals are treated like potatoes. I've seen more than enough of what goes on. It's tragic, horrific, disgusting and obscene.
If it's profitable to cut up a completely unstunned cow to keep the production line moving, that's what they'll do. Hooks and chains and knives and saws and a supervisor who looks the other way. Time is money. Animals lose their lives, but people lose their humanity in places like that.
It happens. The only thing worse than it happening is for people to pretend that it doesn't.
So the nearest I get to meat these days is kidney beans, chick peas, and beef tomatoes. I buy sardines occasionally, but I've not had beef, pork, or lamb for ages, and the last chicken I had was one my dad killed in 1982.
You can make a really good cheap burger from tinned kidney beans, by the way. Break them up, add loads of fried onion, some tomato puree, sweet pepper, chilli, salt and pepper, mould it into a patty, then fry it and stick it in a bap. Mmmmm... Gorgeous and greasy, just like me. ;-)
I'd love some Highland meat but you're to far away. Are you able to get the horns/ skull back and cleaned. I'd think they would sell well as a mounted set of horns.

Feel your pain, we bought a young Sim bull this year and he got 2 in calf out of 8 😢thankfully we gave them a second chance with a limousin and 7 out of 8 are in calf.

Tom have you ever thought of a video on what happens after the milk leaves the parlour. You must have a bottling process and delivery system. see the milk trucks outside once in awhile. Do you pasturize some of it? Bummer about Flora and Toffee but you are operating as a business not a petty zoo. I think some viewers forget that. Really like how much you care for all the stock, no cattle prods etc. Would like to visit the shop but a bit far from BC Canada..
Did the two highlands actually ever go in heat and did you ever see the Bull jumping them so you know they were actually cycling? Sometimes you have to inject them to bring them into heat and AI/ Bull them.

As much as people like to think these are pets, they are not. Tom does a wonderful job of helping us understand this objectively in this video. Two will go, an two will be born soon. The world turns in one direction and we move forward towards a brighter future and reflect fondly on yesterdays.

Sorry to hear they aren’t in calf Tom! We all see how much hard work you put into the farm, was gutted for you. Your dad is right though, if they aren’t giving back to the farm they need to go. Would love to see a video of them being prepped for the store and some videos of how the store runs. Local produce is best!

At the end of the day, the cattle are there to either produce milk or beef. There well raised, grass fed beef and they'll provide some lovely cuts of meat. Would love to try some of your beef, but (esp. just now) Scotland to Blackpool's a bit far to !!
That is one of the sad part of farming with animals. If the cows or other animals can’t pay for themselves, then they have to go. Love your videos, since your farm reminds me of the dairy farm my family use to own.
This is why people should be willing to eat less meat and pay more for the meat they do eat. Education is the key rather than people thinking meat comes from chuffing plastic packets! That way farming can be less intensive and farmers them selves will get more money for what they produce and work bleedy hard for.
I wonder if there isn’t a market to buy your cows that you don’t want to keep- fir a farmer who wants to start his own good highland group? Just a thought...
They would need to be fertile for anyone to want them to start a group.
