    I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

    Emma, thank you for sharing your experience at universities in the UK. It was quite interesting. In Japan, there are also a lot of arguments on the university ranking. I think most of the indices used for the evaluation rely on the visible outcomes like the number of publications, the scale of budget income, and so on. I personally believe the caring for the students in various senses should be the priority, even it is hard to evaluate by numerical indices. I am glad to hear your honest opinion. It was a really good reminder for me, as a lecturer in a university (I never recommend using Google in my class, though). By the way, your RP videos are quite helpful to set my Japanese-English tongue right. I'll keep watching.

    Emma, you can't imagine how much I understand you! I've studied English teaching in Argentina for free (yes! our universities are FREE) but that makes teacher treat students as if we were less than nothing... A student life can be amazing in some aspects but at the same time so miserable in others! It's a good but difficult experience.
    Your videos are inspiring, go on with your channel!

    Very good vlog Emma. Well done for achieving both degrees. I guess we all go through good and bad experiences at Uni, but it's a place to learn from people in general as well as form solid grounds for our career. I would like to listen to you speaking simple sentences in Spanish and Portuguese if you don't mind. Also, why Portuguese? I joined your channel very recently and learnt so much about pronunciation since. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks for your help and God bless you 🙌

      I have videos on my Instagram page from ages ago of me speaking Spanish and Portuguese. :) I started learning Portuguese simply because I liked the sound of the language. Also, each year I learn a brand new language! So for 2020 it’ll be something different! 😄 It just helps me understand my students more and get to know the problems that certain language speakers may have when learning English.

    Hello Emma, I've been watching your video carefully and I've found it extremely interesting! First of all congratulations for your videos, you 're a fantastic teacher, you know how to keep people's attention alive, your pronunciation is very clear and your style informal and pleasant. I know what it means to be a teacher as I used to be a teacher myself! And also I know what it means suffering from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo as I experienced it three times in these last five years…..We've got two things in common, haha! But I want to tell you my age, as I think I'm the oldest of your followers, I'm 71 and still motivated to improve my English! All the best and thank you!

    Life's made of experiences and going through these tough situations at the university allowed you to fathom better what makes people happy, not always is having a degree or a master's degree at your fingertips, but instead of that, fighting against all odds getting out of the mainstream to work on what makes you happy. I know before you start up on RUclips, it would be safer for you, having a backup plan just in case, and I think that's the right thing to be done. I do like Whenever you tell these stories because there's a lot of new structures of words to learn.

    Hi Emma ☺
    I ve just read and understood how to work the studies in UK. First you have the undergraduate that allows to get a bachelor's degree after 3 years, then you have the postgraduate to get a Master's degree after 1 and 2 years, finally if you are ready again😅you have the PhD degree after 3 years☺
    Therefore, studies are similar to France, we have actually the same degrees in French universities.
    It is quite a few different in the French engineer schools which are the most prestigious studies. The students get an engineer degree after 5 years either in sciences or business, finally if they want to continue they can also get a PhD degree in University after 3 years😅
    I hope I haven't been boring to you but I would wish to share about studies with you😉
    Thanks for your time ☺

    Hello Emma, when I was listening to you I remembered what happened to me when I was studying abroad in Poland two years ago it was really hard for me to live with some girls as roommates that do not respect other culture and they were trying to make fun of me just because I have a different opinion but what relieves it was the stuff in my University that were helpful and professors were wonderful except one tutor who hated my hijab but in general polish people were friendly and I really appreciate every single favor do to me of them.

      Yes, culture clashes definitely happen and it’s frustrating when they do! I feel for you. Some people are just so ignorant and intolerant towards other cultures and believe their culture is more superior and as a result believe that everything else is weird or wrong. It’s sad as these people leave university and end up being ignorant and arrogant adults. I’m glad you at least enjoyed the university! :)

      I had the same problem with a roommate from Montenegro during my Erasmus experience in Lithuania. At first, she was nice and we kind of got along but when the classes started, she changed her behavior. I was studying full time and she's got just some random classes afternoon. It was so unfair when I wanted to rest for the next day, she started to chat via Skype with her family very loud or left the lights on. Her friends would visit her every day, and stare at me watching what I had been doing. I almost was deprivated from any privacy. It was horrible. So when it became possible, I asked the admin to move in other empty room, anyway I was paying for it. Because of the upcoming winter holidays and thanks to teachers understanding, we finished earlier and passed all the exams in the beginning of December. Last two months I lived like a Queen in double room, just me) I enjoyed so much my vacation. I explored the city and had so much fun. This was the best time in my life ❤️. I regret just only thing, I couldn't extend my studies for one more semester. I was pity.

    A pattern I'm seeing in uni vlogs: big-name unis coming up short for student support, and smaller unis acing it. Cathedral Group unis seem highly praised when it comes to support: considering most of them started as teacher training colleges founded by churches, maybe good pastoral care was in their DNA from the start.

    Emma, is there this English saying that "A picture is worth a thousand words". If yes, then you could have just put a few pictures there and your dissertation is done. Just kidding. I can feel that you are very proud of your work. Thanks for sharing your university experience. Glad that you have chosen to be a RUclipsr. It is a loss to the university but a gain for all of us, your subscribers.

    Wow, just found your posts. On this subject, i had lecturers who were paid for nothing more than reading off a prompt , couldn't use the technology and hadn't prepared. Others were excellent . But ,yes, it's shocking how some are expecting to get in and out, and leave you to it......few are invested in what they do.

      From the linguistics department, they were the best.
      However, I found admin staff to be lazy and not care much for students. But I received that kind of treatment at Bristol University too.

    If you have any insight on these universities can you make a video on it

    Hi Emma, this was a really great and informative video. I'm starting university in September and am nervous about the whole socialising aspect - I would consider myself to be quite reserved and was just wondering whether this would pose as a notable hinderance in a university setting. I've decided to live at home and make the hour commute daily as I'm far more comfortable at home. Would be interesting to hear your opinion.

    Hi Emma, thank you for sharing your college life. It's interesting and inspiring. However, i feel a little bit down cause I have to spend 5 years (normally 4 years) to finish my bachelor degree. I am an English Literature student and I consider to get my master in the UK. Is it okay if I take TESOL for my postgraduate while I take literature in my undergraduate?
    You are so strong despite your complex problems. Bristol is so disappointing yet i consider to apply there. I'm lucky to watch your video. Million thanks Em.

    I totally agree about the overpriced rental of graduation gowns / hats. It's not worth the money at all but you have no choice as you have to wear it at the ceremony! University in general is ridiculously overpriced, I'm just glad that you only have to pay it back in small pieces if you earn above a certain amount after graduating.

    Hi Emma☺I have a question again. You had three years to get your master degree in UK? In France the master degree is a five-years diploma before the PhD degree which is a 8-year diploma. In UK the master degree is it a 3-year diploma and not a 5-year diploma ?
    Thanks for your time ☺

    Right now iam an university student. I had passion in my eyes and I really loved what I would study BUT everything crushed as soon as I got there , cause tutors don’t really explain anything , they ask ask ask and assume that we know everything, and lots of homework’s but they don’t really make any effort to teach us like really teach. The beginning of the video when u mentioned about that teacher that told u to use google , ohhh I relate so much, and I hate it. I only want to run away from there, I feel like it’s just a waste of time and money. I feel so disappointed😭😢😢😢

    What's the general perception in the UK of lower ranked universities? Such as YSJU?

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  3 года назад

      It depends on the course. For example, YSJ is fantastic for sports science, education, and linguistics (the linguistics department was the top of the list for student satisfaction when I was there). In general though, employers only really care about where your degree is from if you study subjects such as law, medicine, veterinary science, etc. (I say this very generally, as some employers may not care). I wouldn’t worry too much about it. YSJ is great and you’re going to have an amazing time there.

  • @tomfisher3643

    To people who went here(York St. John’s). Have you had good opportunities after finishing your degree? Also do you feel you have been chosen over someone else because you attended this university. Cheers

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  3 года назад

      Most people I know who went to uni have pretty decent jobs. It depends what you study. I went to Bristol uni and found that they made no effort to help with work and volunteering opportunities, but YSJ really pushed that and encouraged students to study abroad, do extra curricular activities, and volunteer. During my degree, if you didn’t study abroad, you were given a short unpaid work placement as part of one of your modules for some experience. If you study linguistics now you can also take the CELTA and become a qualified English as a foreign language teacher. The CELTA course on its own is about £1500 so if you want to teach, it’d definitely recommend it.
