Might sound weird, but what I love most about this scene is how Roy was prepared to let Marty go without knowing the truth because he 'seemed so happy'. Even psychopaths are capable of being nice.
He could have easily said that a guard told him he really injured her neck. That’s what I thought he was gonna say. Then Marty ask around & none of the guards say they never mentioned anything.
Was he a psychopath, though? Was he? Abused, both mentally and physically, and both violently and sexually, fostered, etc. What would you do? How would you feel about it after? Psychopaths are born. Had this character been born into a "normal" (non-abusive, caring) home, would he still be this way? I doubt it.
@@NJFPV There are plenty of serial killers who had a completely normal upbringing. Ultimately they are unlucky to be born with the brain of a psychopath. Just like how a healthy person develops cancer in their 30s for example. We are all dealt a hand of cards in life. We didn’t pick our parents or how we were raised. The people we met and the genes we have. If an alligator killed 10 people we wouldn’t feel like it was responsible. It’s just how they are. I think it’s obvious that humans are exactly the same way but on a much more complicated level. Free will is a very powerful illusion that we feel we have. Decisions still have consequences but we aren’t in control of our actions. The same way you don’t feel in control of your heart beating right now is the same as the choices and thoughts being made by our brains.

No offense to Richard Gere , he was pretty good in this movie , but if I was him I would've tried to stop this movie from coming out. Norton steals the show from him and everyone else. Probably the best acting debut ever.
Damn you took those word's from my mouth. What Norton did in this movie is soo precious word's can't articulate. I had goosebumb's everytime he changed to Roy...and this scene is just like cherry to the top of the cake.
dude are you serious? he knew that he wasn't going to have the spot light of the movie, anyone would, just by reading the script. it was even better because of Norton. Its not like Richard's career ended because of that
tomhulcelover That's not the point. The point is Ed Norton was an unknown at this time. Whether or not Gere knew that his role wasnt as great as the Aaron/Roy role doesnt matter. Not many actors , especially actors making their on-screen debut could've delivered the performance that Norton did.
Being a cinephile, I 've watched thousands of movies in the last sixty years. There have only been five films for me that pulled off an exquisite twist finale. The Sixth Sense, Jean de Florette, Witness for the Prosecution, The Usual Suspects and this one. Just trying to wrap your head around, " There never was an Aaron, counselor, " is fantastic! What a wonderful first movie for Norton and such a juicy part!
I agree with them, it's one of those movies that it may even make it better kinda knowing what's gonna happen. Ed Norton has done a lot of movies like that. Fight Club comes to mind, as well.
Cannibal Teddy Yeah it was his first major movie, and he ended up getting nominated for an Academy Award, making him the first one to ever do that in a breakout role at the time IIRC. Don't quote me on that but I am pretty sure. He was definitely amazing in it.
The first time I watched this film and this scene came on, I was literally speechless. I just ended up staring blankly at the screen for a full five minutes and had to rewind the end of the film to register it. So unexpected.
I remember getting chills in the theater when I saw this scene. You could’ve heard a pin drop in the audience. When you are in the presence of genius-that’s what this actor is.
It doesn't say it in this clip, but to anyone who watched the movie. "act-like-a-man"? Jesus, I knew exactly what you wanted from me. It was like we were dancing, Marty!" I feel like there is a hidden message. Marty always wanted to dance with the blonde. Hinting that Roy and Marty both are just two separate evils. Not too far apart. I took about a minute coming up with that. I think there may be some message better explained if analyzed long enough.
008DREW lol..no it’s not..he just simply said that it was like they were dancing. Doing steps in command. And Marty wasn’t evil. He did wrong things because of his job and he regrets it. But irony is he still have to that because of his job. You can’t categorize it as evil. One of the ultimate messages of this movie was even if you try to do the right thing evil can still come up with an innocent face and fool you.
Me after the murder: "Oh, we're off to a good start." Me a quarter into the film: "I am so confused." Me at Twist 1: "OK that actually is both confusing and mysterious." Me at Twist 2: "OK that makes a LOT of sense." Me near the end: "OOOOOHHH THINGS ARE GETTING GOOOOOOOOD" Me at the VERY end: "..." *jaw falls off*
So there never was a Tyler? Jesus Christ, if that's what you think than I am disappointed in you. I don't mind telling you. There never was a Jack...(or Cornelius, Rupert, Travis, Narrator-- whatever). ;)
The role of Norton is a masterpiece! My fav movie due to this Aaron/Roy role! 👏👏👏 for Norton and Gere, too. Gere’s facial expression after Norton’s clapping - priceless, isn’t it?
He did not win an oscar... wtf you talking about lol , Cuba Gooding Jr won that year for Jerry Maguire, Norton was just nominated for it. Do some research before speak about shit like this.
We studied this in class. He's trying to pull of Multiple personality disorder, but more realistically he's got anti social personality disorder. It means he feels no remorse
It's an unexpected twist, but in hindsight it's so understandable. Right from the moment you meet Norton's character, you think he's innocent. Of course he turns out to be guilty.
If you think about it, it's kinda Vail's fault (Gere). When he first met Aaron, he said he didn't care if he was guilty or not, but he let himself care. He put everything on the line to protect Aaron, only to find out that it's because of his sympathy, he was played.
I found Edward Norton so damn hot and brilliant in Birdman that I had to go watch this movie. I see that his hotness is not a new thing. Oh la la. Poor Linda though.

my jaw dropped when i first saw this ending. i think i was 12 when i first saw it and it was the first really clever twist ending i had ever seen. stays with me to this day
One of the best reveals in cinematic history, absolutely. That and the Sixth Sense are probably one and two. The reveal is one of the great plot devices in movies. A reveal is different, of course than something like Darth Vader "revealing" he's Luke's father. A reveal changes the very nature of what the movie was thought to be. The version of "The Thing" released a few years ago is actually a reveal movie. People weren't watching a remake, or new version of the classic John Carpenter's, "The Thing." It wasn't until the very end of the movie that they realized they were actually watching a prequel that ended exactly where Carpernter's began.
@r33mote The Usual Suspects is a better example of a reveal than Se7en. The ending of Se7en is a great twist/surprise but, it isn't a reveal that makes you rethink/need to rewatch the entire movie over again. Psycho would be another classic reveal. A reveal is when you literally experience an entirely different movie after you've seen it through the first time.
People think Arron/Roy is a malicious psycho, but how would any of us feel after serial abuse and how would we react to the abuser? The guy has issues and is very clever, but a psychopath?
The biggest Oscar snub in history was probably when Malcolm McDowell didn't win best actor for Alex in A Clockwork Orange. He was pure evil. This one's up there also.
This scene was amazing from both sides. The looks on both their faces were so powerful. Even more powerful than the words to me ! When Aaron's true personality came out he terrified me!! just the look on his face and his demenour was enough to scare me it was so powerful ! You can literally see him become emotionless. Just amazing !!! And the look on richard's face is priceless! he's so devastated by this. And i also love the look on richard's face and his tone of voice when he goes back in the cell to confront Aaron/roy coz you can tell just by the look on his face that he already knows whats going on! From the minute he realised what Aaron said about her neck he knew exactly what was going on !
On purpose. Or, well, that's what I like to think, because in my opinion Aaron was way too smart to give himself away with such an utterly stupid slip of the tongue. I think he was so proud of fooling everyone and so frustrated that no one could approve the genius of his performance because no one knew it was a performance, he just had to tell somebody. And telling Marty was safe, because who the fuck would believe him if he tried to expose Aaron, right?
Three Actor's are at their peak in late 90s Edward Norton(Primal Fear, FightClub, American History X,Red Dragon ) Russell Crowe(LA Confidential, Insider,Gladiator, Beautiful Mind)and Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspect, 7,American Beauty, The Negotiator and A Time To Kill!
I love the look Norton gives when Gere first confronts him about the neck thing. He just sits there, mouth open, trying to come up with something to say. I love it, it is great!
I think most people don't understand the acting here. There is no psycho. Bully or victim. There is only a survivor. And he's not looking for pity. The way he talks to Marty shows his true character, confident, solid, empathetic yet absolutely heartless when it comes to his actions. That is what happens when you have to survive by yourself. He kept his pride and honor intact before everything else. Does that make him a good or bad person? Again, that is not the question. Simple minds need to make things black or white, right or left. Reality is different. Its both. Always. He is a good person. He is a bad person. He is righteous but also a criminal. I think this was also Gere's best acting, its an art to facilitate one's main character as a support. Because lets not kid ourselves here. Despite the screen time this was Norton's first main role.
You cannot top this bit of acting by Edward Norton totally awesome he played three or four different parts when you get down to it as he told Mari I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings bud!
There are so many ways to kill a person, and only the most vulgar methods involve violent, physical contact. Roy undermined everything Marty had thought he had become, he undermined Marty's most precious thing-his newfound sense of goodness, purpose, meaning. You can make a person's heart stop, you can crush their skull, but to shake their identity to the core? To make them face the world lost and no longer with a sense of self? That is the beauty of the darkness.
@@Србомбоница86 Sure there is, in fact it's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. You just refuse to see it, but it's always there smiling at you waiting for you to notice it. Edward Norton is officialy my favourite actor
he should have gotten an academy award for this scene alone!
I LOVE this scene!!! Edward Norton is a legend
Great film Edward Norton is so Good seen this twice wow what a ending to a film could t believe it the first time round
Very very underrated
Am I the only one who gets a Joker vibe from that slow clap? *chillzzz* Show-stopping stuff.
Yes me, Heath Ledger was probably inspired by this film :)
I thought the same thing!! XD
Edward norto n would make an amazing joker
totally
Ledger don't got nothing on Norton.
Might sound weird, but what I love most about this scene is how Roy was prepared to let Marty go without knowing the truth because he 'seemed so happy'.
Even psychopaths are capable of being nice.
Yep. Very interesting. So, I'm guessing he slipped up on purpose then?
He wouldn't want to have ruined his chances of getting out scott free.
The same way you don’t feel in control of your heart beating right now is the same as the choices and thoughts being made by our brains.

the way edward norton looks at Marty, bis facial expression, is so well done.
I'll never get the same chills ever again from watching the scene like I did the first time because the first time I saw this part my mouth was on the floor and I had goosebumps all over my body!!! BRILLIANT!
indeed!
Ed Norton is just simply incredible .
I literally can't stop watching this
Me neither lol
I have a hard time watching it for fear of ruining the whole move! This movie is epic!!!
Masterpiece.
Neil Tomlinson of course it's
This scene sends a chill down my spine!
there's no way you can think he isn't hot in this movie
Aaron-Roy (Edward Norton)
He's soooo hot in this movie! ;)
Ted Bundy was also Hot
Ted bunny was anything but hot
I liked your comment but I'm not gay
Primal Fear is an underrated movie. It is still thrilling and have an outstandig cast. I watch the movie twice a year an I am never be bored.
Edward Norton is one of the best actors of all time he's very talented
Primal fear, fight club, the illusionist, the score, American history x, rounders..... Just amazing
...Birdman
"..there never was an Aaron, counselor..." with that glance thru the bars, gives goosebumps
Not many actors , especially actors making their on-screen debut could've delivered the performance that Norton did.
irishwhip03 then i don't know why you made your original comment. this movie wasn't really supposed to be about richard's character
I don't think movies are about actors trying to out-act each other..
Most people dont like the movie but i love the ending to escape from LA
You should have not told there is a plot twist in the end man, I was looking forward to watch some of these movies😂😂
Disturbed. One of the Great performances I knew nothing about !! Now I do. He should be on Vilans list somewhere
Prigat9876 The Frida Khalo biopic, He was cast as Rockefeller
first fight club, now this!!!!! ed norton is slowly becoming my favorite actor.
Primal Fear(1996). Fight Club (1999)... you're late.
i was and i have my regrets
all good my bro! Two great movies and i'm glad you respect both. Just had to get the record straight... :)
Watch Red Dragon! Great movie, Edward N is the protagonist.
You should check out red dragon, and American history x. Please watch these if you like Ed Norton, I promise you won't regret it
Is it just me or do we actualy root for the criminal in this movie? XD
+darnact We always root for a charismatic psycho. Hannibal Lecter anybody?
Heath Ledger's Joker.
+darnact Well done, Friendo
+Cezariusz 88 Hannibal Lector wasn't a villain.
Amon-Ra Mo7ammud
He kills and eats people.
This scene was an early example of what a powerhouse of an actor Ed Norton is. He’s phenomenal in everything.
Check him out in THE SCORE.
I'm madly in love with Edward Norton
i've actualy wanted to see this movie fought it might be cool to check out a clip......
but i think i may have just ruined the movie for myself.
You did.
you did but it's still worth watching
I agree with them, it's one of those movies that it may even make it better kinda knowing what's gonna happen. Ed Norton has done a lot of movies like that. Fight Club comes to mind, as well.
Cannibal Teddy Yeah it was his first major movie, and he ended up getting nominated for an Academy Award, making him the first one to ever do that in a breakout role at the time IIRC. Don't quote me on that but I am pretty sure. He was definitely amazing in it.
Cannibal Teddy The courtroom scene and the interrogation scene are pretty memorable in my eyes.
Norton's acting is an amazing example of how different a person looks to others depending on how they present and carry themselves.
The first time I watched this film and this scene came on, I was literally speechless. I just ended up staring blankly at the screen for a full five minutes and had to rewind the end of the film to register it. So unexpected.
Edward Norton is brilliant!
Oh I often saw you in One OK Rock videos. Didn't expect to see you here! :D
...."There never was an Aaron"...most haunting line in that whole movie. Period.
This twist is a life changer for those who have soft hearts, this acting convinced me so hard that it broke my heart man..
It was like we were dancing, Marty!"
I feel like there is a hidden message. Marty always wanted to dance with the blonde.
Hinting that Roy and Marty both are just two separate evils. Not too far apart.
I took about a minute coming up with that. I think there may be some message better explained if analyzed long enough.
I know. I couldn't believe they didn't extend the clip to include that. It's my favourite line from the move.
A
008DREW lol..no it’s not..he just simply said that it was like they were dancing.
I watched the movie in French and it is so much more creepy in English. Edward Norton did an incredible job.
the original is always tops.
I just watched this during quarantine and it just blew my mind!
Im also watched this Masterpiece yesterday 😎😎😎
Me after the murder: "Oh, we're off to a good start."
Me a quarter into the film: "I am so confused."
Me at Twist 1: "OK that actually is both confusing and mysterious."
Me at Twist 2: "OK that makes a LOT of sense."
Me near the end: "OOOOOHHH THINGS ARE GETTING GOOOOOOOOD"
Me at the VERY end: "..."
*jaw falls off*
So there never was a Tyler?
Jesus Christ, if that's what you think than I am disappointed in you. I don't mind telling you.
There never was a Jack...(or Cornelius, Rupert, Travis, Narrator-- whatever).
;)
Chop Norris verbal kint ;)
Or Sebastian.
I love this comment hahaha.
The role of Norton is a masterpiece! My fav movie due to this Aaron/Roy role! 👏👏👏 for Norton and Gere, too.
Gere’s facial expression after Norton’s clapping - priceless, isn’t it?
"How do you know about her neck?"
"Oh, they told me."
"Oh, ok."
ed norton is one heck of an actor. Really brilliant in real life too
I've always thought that there were 2 possibilities.
1. The personality of Roy took over Aaron.
2. Aaron was a mask for Roy
AND HE DIDN'T WON THE OSCAR FOR THIS?? BULLSHIT!
he did. an oscar for best supporting actor. ..which was huge cuz it was only his debut film.
He did not win an oscar... wtf you talking about lol , Cuba Gooding Jr won that year for Jerry Maguire, Norton was just nominated for it. Do some research before speak about shit like this.
That and giving his 2nd Oscar to Begnini was a travesty
Love this kind of movies same goes to primal fear edward norton and richard Gere :) 👍👍
I love the way he says the line "good for you (stop for couple seconds ), Marty." So great! which impressed me more this is Ed's debut film.
"There never was an Aaron." Chilling.
We studied this in class. He's trying to pull of Multiple personality disorder, but more realistically he's got anti social personality disorder. It means he feels no remorse
More like a Psychopath
@@Tusc9969 That's what antisocial personality disorder means.
Sociopath more like
Such a brilliant film
It's an unexpected twist, but in hindsight it's so understandable. Right from the moment you meet Norton's character, you think he's innocent. Of course he turns out to be guilty.
If you think about it, it's kinda Vail's fault (Gere). When he first met Aaron, he said he didn't care if he was guilty or not, but he let himself care. He put everything on the line to protect Aaron, only to find out that it's because of his sympathy, he was played.
You are very correct. Marty should've handled this like he did with all the other cases and not let himself get emotionally involved.
I found Edward Norton so damn hot and brilliant in Birdman that I had to go watch this movie. I see that his hotness is not a new thing. Oh la la. Poor Linda though.
Empressoftheflames Haha, I watched Birdman Friday and Primal Fear today, Saturday. I actually forgot Norton was in this, I haven't seen the movie since I was like 14. Now I plan on spending the rest of the weekend watching more Norton work.
Just remembered, I loved him in Larry Flint vs. The People.
SilhouetteJudas I don't know, between this and Usual Suspects I feel like there is an established trope of using women as motivational scapegoats and killing them off just to make sure they can't refute your account.
You should see American Hystory X .. I dont know if Norton has some real problems always plays Psychos or Demented Interesting characters, but he sure chose his profession right! Hes Good
Empressoftheflames have you seen the score with ed Norton and Robert de niro?
Edward Norton should have won an Oscar for his performance in Primal Fear. What a great actor this man is... on so many levels.
my jaw dropped when i first saw this ending. i think i was 12 when i first saw it and it was the first really clever twist ending i had ever seen. stays with me to this day
Its always the quiet ones
Ed shines in every film, amazing actor.
Literal chills
this is what crushed my childhood dream of being a lawyer 😂
This movie and American History X are his best performances
Couldn't agree more
The Score he is stuttering again . Amazing performance as well
Really? That's a work of art? Not the fact that you played everyone? That wasn't a work of art?
I remember watching this with my mother. We went to the movies together on a regular basis. We were both just - whoa! Excellent movie. Miss my mom.
From the minute he realised what Aaron said about her neck he knew exactly what was going on !
ed norton is such a good actor - should be doing more movies.......loved this one.
Three Actor's are at their peak in late 90s
Edward Norton(Primal Fear, FightClub, American History X,Red Dragon )
Russell Crowe(LA Confidential, Insider,Gladiator, Beautiful Mind)and Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspect, 7,American Beauty, The Negotiator and A Time To Kill!
Edward Norton is brilliant here but I don't think Richard Gere get enough credit he just looks so broken by this reveal.
In my opinion, this is right up there with the Sixth Sense ending.
That wink at the end :-P
"There never was an Aaron, counselor." That line scared me the first time I heard it.
I think the real question here is who's more badass, Roy or Tyler Durden?
Tyler
Terrance Goldston That's a terribly unfair question to ask.
+Terrance Goldston Tyler
I'd have to say Roy/Marty, but I might need to watch Fight Club again just to make sure.
Roy would crucify Tyler.
I'd forgotten about this movie. Watched it a long time ago, and it's really, really good. Need to watch this again.
2024 - I just watched it again….
There is no beauty in darkness whatsoever
@@Србомбоница86 Sure there is, in fact it's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. You just refuse to see it, but it's always there smiling at you waiting for you to notice it. But you never will, because it scares you. You need not be afraid, because you already know what it looks like. You see it in the mirror when you gaze. You hear it while you dream. You feel it when you're alone. But you ignore it, because you're afraid of what looks back.
@@uzazil I understand you. people think they follow the light and is that what they try to believe but inside their soul there is a darkness. Everyday people act as a good person because of society but they are just evil and they will show when their is no one to judge. I don't say their are aren't good people but their are more evil disguised as good people. Evil and good do exist inside the flesh of humans
i'm sue-ing the acting industry for not giving Norton an award for this. Dam, this kid is amazing...
If you’re watching this clip without having watched the whole movie you have just robbed yourself of one of the most brilliant plot twists in the history of storytelling. I feel for you.
Gee, thanks. I definitely just did that, and now I feel silly!🙃
One of my favorite movies. A real gem.
is it wrong that i prefer roy.
no no it is not "roy" is so sexy and "aaron" is so freaking adorable
I guess I'm the only one that didn't like the final twist but Edward of course nailed it and deserves all the praise for this incredible performance🙌🏿Wow!
Now THAT is what I cal a plot twist. The serial killer personality or roy was the real person and the Aaron personality was the fake one.
Ed Norton is a natural.
The end really surprised me
Why this kid didn't win a Oscar is beyond me
