I’m an 81 year old Irishman now living in Western Australia. In my early years I lived in an Apartment in the Old Jail. located on the Square in Roscommon Town. The shop on the right-hand corner of the Jail was a Saddlery, one of the best known in Ireland, and was owned by two brothers named Monaghan, John-Joe and Dick. It was a great rambling-hose at the week-ends.
Why show an English castle flying a Union Jack when speaking of Roscommon? Many castles here in Ireland to choose from for your video and they won’t be flying that flag, with the exception of our occupied counties perhaps. Bit of respect for the Irish heroes died to free us of it some of which you mentioned from 1798
@@stiofanmcareavey5300 Roscommon is the county town and the largest town in County Roscommon in Ireland. It is roughly in the centre of Ireland, near the meeting of the N60, N61 and N63 roads. I know Roscommon very well my mother's family's come from there the prison is now shops and they have a very grand church it was a Norman stronghold for centuries
The Angevins and their subjects invaded Ireland in 1169, their ancestors were Norman but Henry II most certainly wasn't a Norman. That would be like calling Boris Johnson a Victorian.
You just read the entire Wikipedia entry for Lady Betty, you've basically just stole someone else's research and presented it as your own. At least credit your source!
Great story! Another interesting story on the subject is the Hangman's diary, an account of Master Franz Schmidt. Hangmen were unclean and not allowed full privileges of citizenship and therefore shunned. The book speaks of his duties and also rules and laws of the time he was active. (1573 - 1617)
Unfortunately this whole video sounds like it was ripped from Lady Betty's Wikipedia page. I've noticed that a lot of these 'history' channels on here will take an obscure historical figure off Wikipedia, narrate their bio to pictures, and try to pass it off as original content. I've now gotten into the habit of checking to see if the channel in question has produced original content, and in this case it seems to have been taken almost verbatim from Betty's Wiki bio.
2:28 Not Roscommon Town. Not even Roscommon County, That's the Landmark Hotel in Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim. 3:59 again not Roscommon Town. That's Strokestown House in Strokestown, although it is in County Roscommon. I live in Roscommon and Lady Betty is a very well known figure. She used to be used similar to the Boogeyman. Kids would be threatened that if they didn't behave Lady Betty would come and get them. The old jail 8:20 is now a shopping center with apartments over. There is a restaurant on the first floor which runs to full length across the front. Part of this was originally the condemned cells and is said to be haunted. I used to work there and I personally never saw anything but my some of my colleagues say they definitely have.
I'm not disputing your comment but it's interesting that one side of the Shannon is in Leitrim and the other is in Roscommon is it not? My Aunt lived by the Shannon on the Roscommon side.

Apparantly, during the 1798 nrebellion in the midlands there was an executioner who used to hang people over his own sholder as he was a particularly large man. You think it's barbaric? Personally, I cheered when Ted Bundy got what he deserved. The law was merciful. Nothing like the hideous sufferings that evil beast had inflicted on his victims, one of whom was a 12 year old girl.
What would suggest for people such as Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacey? Perhaps bake them an apple pie, have them promise to never do it again and then release them……hopefully they could become your next door neighbor.
Yeah, wielding the axe was often a weak point with english executioners, they didn't get enough practice at it, and so often blundered, especially such who were habitual drunkards, or at least has resorted to the bottle to resolve their anxiety. Ketch is not at all exceptional in that regard. He's better known for his callousness and cruel attitude to his customers, especially those he hanged anyway,
