Thanks for an intriguing case. I had heard of Elizabeth Barton but didn't realise that she came from a humble background. When I think about it I should have known, because a young woman from the middle or upper classes would likely have been prevented by family from doing things that were so certain to bring destruction on herself, but she seems to have been an unprotected girl, subject to epileptic episodes, imagining herself to be divinely inspired. I think the most frightening of all times in which to live must be times when religious beliefs are changing. For devout Christians their beliefs were (and I suppose are) the most important thing in their lives, with eternal salvation the prize. At the Reformation there must have been painful uncertainty about what to believe, the old faith or the new. What's more, some Catholics must have feared that if the Pope excommunicated the King the land would be cursed. It's easy to see how Elizabeth felt she should speak out. I wonder why Elizabeth recanted at the end. Was she afraid of an even worse death if she didn't? Or - which seems likely from the touching speech about others - did being subject to the legal process cause her to lose her belief in herself as inspired?
I have heard it theorised (and I think it possible) that she was a fraud but was frightened of eternal damnation if she did not recant. I think it is possible that she also suffered from mental illness. Not understanding illnesses such as epilepsy at the time, people would have both been in awe and terrified of her seizures, which they perceived to be a sign of divination or worse. I am not sure what drove her, but she played with fire. She knew what she was doing was highly dangerous and that she was being monitored by the authorities. She was told to desist from the public proclamations, but she did not heed the warnings.
Too late. History already has They are but only footnotes in history None will remember their names Only the people who killed them They achieved immortality
Heavy VIII was probably the worst ever monarch. The numbers who were executed were probably far more than official estimates. He was a bloody thirsty tyrant who executed friends, foes and acquaintances at the merest whim. When he died, the treasury coffers were almost empty after a series of expensive and futile wars. His paranoid suspicion of individuals as well as the church and monastic institutions, led him to land grab on a huge scale. His belief in the absolute right that monarchs could do anything they liked resulted in him committing national vandalism on a massive scale by deliberately destroying many magnificent, medieval religious works of art - together with the organised desecration and destruction of churches and monasteries. His unbridled and relentless quest to have a male heir, led him to fatally undermine the once religious unity of the country and leave it in religious turmoil.
The Catholic Church killed alot more people then Henry did yes he's a tyrant but the church had no right to tell anyone how to live think about it they have billions of dollars in art while people starve ,christ turned over the money lender's stalls yet the church has it's own bank

It is because the Lord gives them prophecy in order to try to convert evil but powerful leaders. They have been many Catholic Saints, such as many of the early disciples, whom the Lord had revealed would be murdered for their faith. Still, even knowing the outcome if they continued, they chose marred them rather than stop, preaching the gospel.
It’s too bad we only have the historical record of those in power .. or the winners… it would be interesting to hear her own full story. Clearly she was used.

This is so typical of the monarchy and absolute power. Just because a monarch has a divine right to rule they can act without impunity. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Thank you for posting this. Your videos are really engaging even if your delivery is somewhat on the nasal side. I guess history is colourful enough without historians becoming personalities themselves.

The ONLY good thing to come from him was a great Queen (Elizabeth I). His first child, Mary was an absolute horror and unfortunately a son who only lasted 5 minutes.

I find it really strange how so many British documentaries portray him as some kind of hero king who did so much for the nation.

Heavy VIII is a great rap name.
It was actually down to Henry that he was unable to produce a male heir. The man, not the woman, determines sex :D😂.😅 😅
I just read about her in Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. Just tragic. Tudor England was fascinating, and Henry VIII was such a tyrant.
Tragic, yet she was incredibly foolish to keep making those public proclamations when she was repeatedly warned to stop doing so.
can you bring a serious of catholic nuns and priest who were executed during 16th century ?
It's funny that so few who claim to predict the future truthfully, ever manage to predict their own sad ends.

Epilepsy? I wonder about schizophrenia.
How did she write a book if she could not read or write ?
Perhaps she wrote the way many other have in the past. Others did the penmanship while those who told the tale got the credit.
It is quite simple. People who could not write themselves merely dictated what they wanted to say to a scribe, who then wrote down the words.
