SUBTITLES:
Steve lacy was born in Compton, a city that gave us legends like Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar, but Steve’s childhood in Compton didn’t take the same route as Kendrick and Dre speak on in their music. he was raised by his mother along with his 3 sisters. as his father passed away when he was only ten years old. for his protection, he wasn’t allowed outside much during his childhood and early teens. Steve’s mother didn’t want him to get involved with the wrong crowd and an important part of that was attending church on Sundays. It was at church that Steve first discovered his love for the guitar, But Steve didn’t have a guitar so he would emulate Jarius Mozee in guitar hero. ‘[Guitar Hero] is how I fell in love with the guitar,’ he says. ‘I didn’t think I’d be a renowned guitar player. I don’t think I’m that good. I’m not a guitar player’s guitar player.’ but then I realized I could create songs, and could find a distinct sound that I could call mine.
Steve became so good at the guitar that he was invited to play in the church band and soon he became the one playing the congregation out at the end of services. after seeing his passion for the guitar and hearing how he played Steve’s mother transferred him to Washington prep high school in the 10th grade because of the jazz band the school had for upper classmen
“Growing up, I knew Washington Prep had this jammin’ jazz band, but they said Steve can’t be in until 11th grade. I told them, ‘He’s special. You need to have him here.’ I found the teacher and told him, ‘Steve’s a natural.’ I was ready to tear him a new one if he said no, but when he said, ‘We’d love to have your son,’ I had to catch my breath.”
it was then that Steve would meet the people who would change the course of his life. in that band room at Washington prep Jameel Bruner the keyboard player for a band called the internet at the time was making beats on a laptop when Steve approached him fascinated by what he was doing
over the month’s Steve would watch and learn, seeing the production process first-hand. Then one day, Matt Martians, one of The Internet's founding members, needed a bass player. and this would be the first time Jameel invited Steve to the studio
Steve must have made a good first impression because he soon became a regular at internet studio sessions but he still hadn’t opened up to the members.
“I was really quiet, so I would kind of just do my part, just play,” “and Jameel was like, ‘Yeah, you’re the next recruit.’ Once I got recruited, I started opening up a bit more. We’re like family now.”
after seeing Jameel’s process for making beats Steve started making his own beats but on a one-income household and 5 mouths to feed his mother couldn’t afford to get him the equipment he needed. so he decided to work with what he had he got hold of an i pod and jailbroke it so he was able to work outside of apple’s restrictions. And with apps like bridge, i machine, iMPC, beat maker 2 and Garageband as well as an i rig cable to record his guitar. he made beats everywhere he would go. in line waiting for his food, between classes and even while driving. He'd build tracks

I had the privilege of performing with him in Boston during his tour this past fall, he’s one of my favorite artists and he’s one of the most inspiring people in the industry ❤
Hearing Kendrick say “Yo, put your number in my phone” must’ve been 🤯🤯🤯
So basically everything Steve touches turns to gold, mans is a genius
I fucking love Steve Lacy, I'm so glad he got me to listen to Fousheé too, which is also one of my favorites.
I'm also kind of the "go with the flow" person, who doesn't impose much and doesn't set any goals at all, so knowing that Steve decided to really put his energy into something and that made him stand out serves as an inspiration to me.
Steve, Tyler and Frank Ocean are my all time favorites and it's amazing that in one way or another they are connected.
Yeah, great video btw.
people saying, he just had one big tiktok song, us fans know this man will be here for a long time to come. not a one hit wonder.
real
it’s amazing to see someone like him win, i remember a lot of the events in this video bc i was there to really witness them from the outside yk, so it’s amazing to think there was a time where almost no one knew who steve was except for me and some friends and now everyone knows him and is a fan, it’s amazing, he also got me into producing on my phone and everything, truly an inspiration
love this guy his music give me life.

kind of a crazy parallel-- stevie wonder also was in a life changing car accident when he was 23, steve lacy was 22 with his. stevie wonder first release after that was fulfillingness last finale, which became his first number one billboard album. steve lacy's also had a milestone in that he got his first solo number one with bad habit.
